Is anyone else interested in seeing this game in MSE?

The (horribly neglected) official website is at http://lotrtcg.fanhq.com/

Just wondering if there's any interest.

I could probably whip something together for you. It will take me a little while to make all of the frames and do the coding, maybe a week or two. If you could figure out what font is used for the various parts it would be a big help, I'm not very good at identifying different fonts.

Card title looks like MatrixBoldSmallCaps. So does card type.
Game text might be in Plantin, but I'm not sure. The flavor text is definitely something else, though.
All site numbers and card costs appear to be in the same font, but I can't identify it...

Sorry but unfortunately it seems that I over estimated my skills with cleaning up the frames a bit. I don't think that I'm going to be able to do that after all. If you can find or make some blank frames I can still do all of the template coding for you though.

A funny thing happened to me just now; I was checking on my request at FKiH's shop over at the mtgsalvation forums, and noticed FPM asking if the LotR frames were done yet. I added a post asking if FKiH had LotR frames, and if so, hinting that I'd like to have them. I'm waiting for a reply now; if I hear anything, I'll hand them over to you Mystic_Hobo.

The font list, according to FirePenguinMaster:

Centaur MT Swash Capitals
URW Garamond T Medium
URW Garamond T Bold
Garamond Nr2 SB-Medium

So, um, I'm not quite comftorable asking this, but, anyone, erm, "recognize" these?

Also, if anyone is any good at finding duplicates to the fonts, images of them can be found here: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showpost.php?p=1993748&postcount=243

if anyone can motivate FKih to finish, he's already done a little bit under half of the template blanking for me and they look, as would be expected, incredible. i'm nowhere near that level of skill, so i don't feel like i could finish the project myself, but i would very much like to see it completed.

It's been a long time since FKiH has seen anything through to fruition - let alone share anything he has. I'm still waiting for him to release his PSD for the Space template he created(it's amazing), as well as his horizontal planeswalkers, his second Magic template, and some other random ones.
I don't know what his deal is, he started off sharing some great things with everyone (the blank MTG backgrounds, his Vanguard template, even a custom MTG template.) Since he got "really good", he has shared very little of what he creates.
He's good, great even, but it's hard to have faith in somebody that apparently prefers flaunting his skill with template design to sharing those templates he creates.
Don't mistake what I'm saying, I'm not trying to flame him, I'm just voicing my opinion that you'd have very little luck motivating him.

I also hate to roast on FKiH, but I totally agree with artfreakwiu. Its like FKiH's threads are just a string of teaser images that never come to fruition. Vaporware, if you're into video games.

Before he posted, I was going to suggest that if you're willing to share what you've got FPM, maybe when time permits artfreakwiu (CBG) and/or Buttock1234 would be willing to have a look at it, and might finish it. They've both done some pretty amazing things around here in the past.

Good job on the template for LOTR, but there area few bugs that I came across while testing the template:

The "verb" template does not properly position the image that one wishes to put on the card.

There are no Hobbit, Uruk-hai, Nazgul, Moria, Orc, or Sauron templates.

All templates have a bug that when you select "Dunland" or "Gondor" or "Gollum", etc, the name "Dunland" or "gondor", etc, appears in black over the symbol in the top right corner.

The verbs cannot modify strength, vitality, resistance, etc.

It is not possible to denote "uniqueness" with a dot before the title, nor is it posible to say "Event [dot] Shadow" or "Event [dot] Skirmish" or "Condition [dot] Support Area" for example.

Is missing the correct fonts, and should have a font size changer(but this is the Set Editor's problem, not the template's).

All in all, this template is a great start, and I would very much like to see these bugs fixed in order to submit the LOTR into the MSE editor. Hopefully this will revive interest in LOTR and eventually even create a community in which the members will vote on tournament legality of cards and in order to use any card you have created, it must first be submitted to the board for voting into the game, and we won't need decipher to make cards for us; we'll make 'em ourselves. Thanx a lot for getting this far!

To the image problem: It seems to me that every template has a different sized or positioned image. Not to mention the weird little boarders I don't know how to do properly.
"There are no Hobbit, Uruk-hai, Nazgul, Moria, Orc, or Sauron templates.": No kidding.
Culture name: I don't know how to easily fix this.
You may notice that the strength and vitality icons are hardcoded into the templates. Talk to FKiH.
There is no uniqueness dot in font used.

I was rather hoping when I posted this that people with more experience would come along and help me make it better.

Well, in Magic all that is necessary is to left click to chose the type of card. I suggest that the culture issue be removed by integrating the culture symbol into the .png and not using it as a menu. They way to select a card would be to simply left click on the card and pick from the menu. this will take away the annoying text of the culture, because the .png's themselves don't have it.

Actually, all I've done is download, apply necessary changes to function in 0.3.6, and put in some icons for the game and style menus. I've also assigned it a unique position hint in my system. That's it.

Really, before the code is even touched, the frames need work. We should really honor FPM's contribution, and make some attempt to finish the images before building a template. Afterall, he's helping us and has done so before (magic-new-token frames are from him, as are magic-old and magic-old-split); we should help him now.

So, I think I can get some stuff done with the images we have. Lifting icons and all that should be fairly easy. But what about the frames that we don't have? Anyone have scans or anything? Some place to start?

Also, after we have all the frames and save a copy for handing to FPM, they need to shrink. A whole lot. They're just too big for MSE to handle now; every new frame has a load pause.

If you could scan them at a large size like 5x or 600dpi or something, that would be great. We also don't have a "Ring" frame, if that means anything to you, even though the template has an option for one. It might be that FPM has the rest of them, too.

I can get scans of the cards for you, but it'll be several days before I can get the cards themselves. I have them in storage in SC and I'm in TN at the moment. If anyone else has them before I can get them, go for it.

As for the templates needed, there is no Hobbit culture (it's Shire), there's no Nazgul culture either (it's Wraith). The One Ring frame is actually two types, the common and the rare versions. The common always has the same background, while the rare varies in background and both are full-card pictures. I have most of the rares except for the ones from the Hunters and Ages End sets. If you want scans of the ones I have, I can do that for you.

On the left of and noun card, there are stats. the third one is the minion's site number (in the case of evil/shadow cards) and either resistance or a Signet (in the case of a companion, or a "good" noun). it would be nice to have a pull down menu and being able to type text there to indicate how much resistance.

As for the base images for every culture, what would be nice is the removal of all the text from the example images I posted, and then removal of the image inside the card, in order to leave a blank slate (removal of signets would be nice too).

Odd - I think Shadows breathed new life into a game destined to die once the third film was released and the hype died.

But I'm happy to help out with scans and blanking too. A happy smile

I think this means you need the following scans: The Orc, Uruk-hai, and Evil Men cultures, the new Site template, and, I believe, the template for Follower cards. I don't have any follower cards but the only change is the twilight 'stone' thing is gold. That's it.

I'll try to get the scans to you soon.

Also - the One Ring never had a template background thing. It's just one big picture with text over the top. A happy smile

Fri, 2008-06-06 22:48

Great! I also think that Shadows strengthened the game, but I can see where one could make the argument that it killed the game. The new mechanics added in Shadows made a game that was already very complex nearly impossible to understand.

Sat, 2008-06-07 22:11
Bass

See... I think it made it simpler... I think one of the reasons it supposedly 'killed' the game is because it sacrificed flavour for better mechanics (ringbearers other than Frodo, site paths that can end at the Shire, etc).

Sun, 2008-06-08 00:33
rujudan

as you said anyone could be ring bearer now, whereas before ti was crystal clear that is was Frodo. I still don't understand how this ring bearer thing works. All i know is that if its frodo or sam, then you're good.

Mon, 2008-06-09 00:55
Bogardan Mage

That was Reflections, not Shadows, which introduced alternate ringbearers. I think any ire against Shadows and sets beyond is somewhat akin to some Magic players' dislike of the 8th Edition templates.

At the moment, I'd be happy with a full pre-Shadows set or a full post-Shadows set (as long as it's a full set, we can work with that A happy smile). FKiH doesn't have to do anything, yet he's doing this much and that's good. Then again, this is MSE and we ideally want all possible templates regardless of anyone's personal opinions of them.

Once again, though, this is early days yet and we'll take what we can get.

just to be clear, my beef was not with the new mechanics perse. it was that they totally killed the flavor by almost completely scrapping the current shadow cultures in preference for the new "streamlined" ones. if all i wanted to do was throw orcs at someone, i can do that in any game. i wanted to play LotR so i could use orcs from Mordor, with the Great Red Eye governing their moves. that is cool.

also, the quality of the work done, if the online scans are any indication, went way down. if you look at the later ones the text is thinner and feels less substantial and it just doesn't feel solid. plus the anthologies lost the hand calligrapher for the Tengwar cards and the font they used just did not cut it for me.

finally, probably the thing that bugged me the least but still made me kinda iffy about buying more cards, they overhauled the sitepath AGAIN. and now it doesn't make chronological or topographical sense. the game mechanics, in my eyes, were always really secondary to being able to play a game based on The Lord of the Rings. the game i bought for that first Christmas when FotR came out was a good, solid game. it didn't really need changing. decipher likes to meddle though and eventually killed its own product by changing too many things and losing the old-school players who already had all the cards they wanted.

that said, i'm really looking forward to seeing this template made available because my playgroup and i would really love to write in some of the characters that that didn't make it in. plus we're kinda tossing back and forth the idea of bringing in First Age characters (Fëanor anyone?) into the game.

if i can help at all, i'd be happy to. i just don't have cards to scan for the sets after 10

Yeah - I understand that. The Sauron template was just so cool. BUT - I understand why they did what they did. There simply isn't enough footage of Moria to warrant an entire culture. But then - the same could be said for Dwarves. I think they should've just put Dunlendings into Raiders and Moria into Sauron and kept the templates. 4 Shadow cultures is good (for drafting and what not). Plus - they could've absorbed Dwarves into Gandalf's culture. But I agree - the streamlining of shadow cultures was a bit arbitrary.

I have to say - I disagree. I think the new site path was terrific. I also never understood the idea that it didn't fit 'flavour'. Playing the Cave Troll of Moria at Caradhras never made sense either. A wide-open site path just made the site path EXCITING. Something it never was before. It was always so unbelievably predictable. I think though, they could've easily solved the flavour problem by giving the sites a region number instead of a site number. A site with "Region 2" can be site 4, 5, or 6. I think there was so much good in an open site path, especially the way the region twilight worked and how site 3 and 6 were always sanctuaries.

See - LotR was BOUND to falter once Return of the King hit the cinemas. Without the merchandising hype machine to keep it going, interest would falter. And Shadows' new site path rules was a terrific idea (as was reducing the shadow cultures to a smaller, core number - though they, for no reason, redid Isengard as Uruk-hai which made no sense) that kept me interested. I don't think the game died because of the new shadows mechanics - I think it died because the set designs had very little depth to them (the hunter mechanic was crap - I had a much better idea for hunter; it was a free peoples equivalent of fierce) and because Decipher can't market their games. They expect players to do all the work for them, like if word of mouth is good enough, they'll never have to advertise. I remember, at the time of The Two Towers, you could pick up ANYTHING LotR related in my local HMV. Anything. AND you could get Magic and Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh CCGS. But LotR wasn't there. Neither was Star Trek. Even though the booster boxes would be sat next to the new and shiny dvd box sets. Decipher's customer service and prize support was atrocious, with prizes becoming "Decipher Dollars" so you could buy more Decipher product - and then they never shipped it out. I came second at a tournmaent of a dozen players once, and my prize was a foil uncommon. I came second at a Magic tournament, and I got half a dozen boosters.

Whether Shadows was a good or poor improvement on the game is sadly mired by how atrocious Decipher was at managing it. And you can tell they've not learnt their lesson: Fight Klub is a game that is only available online and only through word of mouth. I'll be amazed if it's still around in two years.

I disagree that it "totally" killed flavour. Only three race cultures were added (with a fourth being a reworked existing culture that effectively stayed exactly the same) and one of those was supposed to be in The Two Towers (they split Evil Men into Dunland and Raiders to up the number of shadow cultures). They could have handled it better, but in my view it's not nearly as huge a change as people think it is. Besides, the old cultures were still used for cards specifically allied to a particular culture (like the Mouth of Sauron and the Balrog).

But that's just it. It wasn't a solid game. Oh sure, it worked well for Fellowship, but when they moved on to TT the site path all fell apart. They had no choice but to adopt the shadows system eventually, as a direct result of how they had set up the site path in Fellowship. There was no other option.

There are lots of images in google images under LOTR TCG. Anyone of them can be used as a base template for its respective culture, but it would first be necessary to eliminate all text and signet, and resistance, and shadow numbers, and subtitles, and titles, and card type, and twilight cost as well. If that can be done via photoshop, then great. Otherwise, I don't see how we can get more templates, because there is no good reason for a blank LOTR card floating around the internet.

As for the fonts, I have found the elvish alphabet and the Tangwar used on the special edition cards, but have not been able to find a free version of Centaur MT or any others. Looks like we need a fundraiser for those fonts, unless someone knows someone who has the fonts and is willing to share...
I do have an image of all the characters of the font though, so if that helps to make .ttf file, maybe we can still get this to work without spending $$$.

So go here to get the fonts for Bold keywords on LOTR cards:

http://www.artifex.com/downloads/

and download the "urwfonts-1.41.tar.bz2" file.
unzip it, and the font I am talking about is "Sylfaen"

the above font also works for the text in the text box (not flavor), and to toggle all that is necessary is to make the text bold or not.

The file also contains Garamond, but not the correct version.

Assuming that's the same Sylfaen that I already have, there's absolutely no way that's the font on the cards. None of those fonts is Sylfaen. Times New Roman is much closer (if not a perfect match).

I'd like to know more about the game, specifically, how many frames there are, which card types use them, and what's the deal with all these little icons, like the shield/sword, the red glowy dot, and the compass? How many of these icons need to be removable from the templates, like the p/t boxes in Magic are?

The icons are:

Sword/Shield = Strength. Combat in LotR works a little differently to Magic, but Strength is used to calculate combat (or "Skirmishes" as the game describes them). Strength appears on all Companions, Allies, and Minions, and may appear on Conditions, Possessions, Artifacts, or Followers that modify Strength. For example, this possession gives +3 strength.
Red Glowy Dot = Vitality. The "hit points" of a card. The game uses a series of damage counters (called "Wounds") that work pretty much as you'd expect. Vitality appears pretty much wherever Strength does.
Compass = Site Number. A major part of the game involves moving along a site path of 9 sites. If a minion is played before the site number indicated, it is considered "Roaming" and costs extra. Site numbers appear on every Minion and rarely appear anywhere else, though the occasional card can modify them.
Black Glowy Dot = Resistance. It doesn't appear on any of the templates we currently have because it was not introduced until later. Resistance is a mechanic that represents the corrupting influence of the ring. It appears on Companions, can theoretically appear on Allies (though it doesn't, because Allies were phased out at the same time Resistance was introduced) and can also appear on Conditions, Possessions, Artifacts, or Followers that modify Resistance. A special "Ringed Resistance" icon indicates a potential ring-bearer. Regular Resistance Icon. Ringed Resistance Icon. Resistance on a Shadow Condition.
Signets. Signets were used to indicate cards that interacted with each other and, for the most part, were a complete failure. There were four signets, if I recall, Aragon, Gandalf, Frodo, and Theoden. They appeared on Companions only, though theoretically they could have appeared on Allies. Signets were replaced by Resistance, which may cause problems in including them. Thoughts?
