Speedpaint Ice Labyrinth by INetGraFX

In a place of devoid of glee, Deep below the glacial sea, She deals, directs, plots, and schemes, And lies asleep with frozen dreams. – Terisiarian Childrens Rhyme circa 1000 AR

An ancient evil has awoken on Dominaria's northern continent of Aerona, and with her return, a new ice age has dawned. Unless united, those that stand against her will fall.

Updated 10/18/14

Concept: This will be a spiritual successor to the ice age block. As a new magic player, this was the first expansion set I was introduced to after Revised. At the time, the concept of snow-mana blew my mind and I've always been a fan of the series since. While Ice Age itself has been outdated, this new set would scale those concepts into more modern power level and color wheel oriented cards.
Mechanics: Cumulative Upkeep and Snow mechanics would be returning, as well as several new unique keywords and some other minor recurring ones. Cumulative upkeep was always seen as a negative; and therefore, a burden of a keyword. Frozen Dreams makes you want to have it, with each permanent benefiting from it's age counters, that is on most cards. Some cards deliberately give age counters to other cards, preferably your opponent's cards. While there would be a splash of multicolor and hybrid cards, that will not be it's primary focus.

Preview Sept 24th and Edited Oct 11th

Sept 24th Set Preview

For this first preview, I am going to merely show concepts I am working on and not new mechanics just yet. This should give you a basic feel for the set.

Snowcovered Lands

Frozen Dreams will see the return of Snow-covered lands as well as other Snow type creatures.

Red Cards

An excellent start to showing off the red cards is to show the sets three dragons.

Blue Cards

Blue favors the icy nature of the north. It thrives and cultivates it.

Edited 10/11/14 – Deep Freeze was increased to a Rare rarity due to its more complicated interactions with other cards.

Green Cards

Green naturally opposes the cold, but has learned to thrive none-the-less.

Edited 10/11/14- Gaea’s Titan has gained the ability of giving your token creatures +1/+1 to increase it’s viability as a rare and to bring it more on par with other titans.

White Cards

White has built vast fortresses along it's border empires. It's soldier are the heart and soul of the north.

Edited 10/11/14- Indifference was originally designed as a ‘Snow’ card with ‘Splice onto Snow’; however, after design considerations, Non-permanent snow cards were eliminated due to a lack of interaction with other cards.

Black Cards

Black is indifferent to the cold, as they have long been cold and calculating on their own. Black is still in the works, and I have not fully developed their style yet. These are the few cards I can showcase.

Edited 10/11/14- Froze in Fear was originally designed as a ‘Snow’ card; however, after design considerations, Non-permanent snow cards were eliminated due to a lack of interaction with other cards.

Artifact Cards

Colorless Cards

Just a few more unique cards to whet your appetite.

And to reveal the true enemy of this set:
Enemy Revealed

”Marit Lage was a powerful sorceress who had a kraken-like figure and existed during the Ice Age. [1] Although she was not a planeswalker, Marit Lage was able to travel to and from planes and possessed other characteristics of planeswalkers. Little is known about her life, her fate, or what exactly she was; all that is known is that she and her followers did a lot of damage to Dominaria, and her defeat left her frozen in an icy prison beneath the sea.” – MtG Salvation Wiki

Marit Lage, the scourge of the ice age has returned to Dominaria to see vengeance and power. In these alternative art cards, she is seen in both her forms before and after her change into a powerful monster. From beneath the ice, she has controlled and manipulated her followers and unsuspecting rules for millennia. Now is the time of her awakening, now is the time for a new ice age.
But Dominaria is not without hope, for with Marit’s return, so has another face returned that Dominaria has not seen in millennia:
Her Glorious Return

Notice anything different on the new Rare and Mythic cards posted? The holographic foil icon has been changed to be more unique. This has no functionality to the card what-so-ever, but is merely a way for me to distinguish my works from other cards. A personalized branding, if you will. As these cards will not be printed on a professional or proxy level, this allows me the freedom to use this area for something different than it's intended use, or to make reprints of popular rares/mythics in my set without fear of proxying.

Oct 18th Mini Preview
It has been a week since I posted anything on this. While I will be extremely busy the next month and can not devote any time to this for awhile, I figured I would give a quick preview of this sets 'baubles'. Useful artifacts for each color. This one I had a bit of fun with while creating.

As always, I hope you enjoyed viewing this preview and any and all critiques, comments, or balancing help are greatly appreciated.
For now, as I still consider this a work in progress, I will be previewing it here instead of the Showcase forums; as I suspect there will be many changes to come as balancing issues arise.

Quick note, protection is always said as "Protection from X and from Y". Colors and non-sub types are always lowercase unless at the start of a sentence, as are second words in keywords (like first strike)

Thanks WindMaster, 'Magic Grammar' is not one of my strong suits. If you get a chance, take a look at the other cards listed in the Preview spoiler.

I edited the card in question, it should be correct now.

Deep Freeze is awesome, but truly deserves to be Rare at least. The board state can become quite messy with Deep Freeze out, so I would advise against having it at any rarity below Rare.

Another snow set I see...

You know, there's a nifty snow template (similar to the sparkly Nyx from Theros) that comes with M15-extra. You can see it in action in my set (check my signature).

Also, if you need some tips for Magic grammar, I do also have a syntax tutorial.

This is pretty cool! Aside from some small formatting and wording issues, it looks quite promising!

Looks like a cool set, but I have to say that Noxious Spray kind of confuses me as a card. Firstly, it has a wording issue with the "no-regeneration" clause. If it dies, that means it already wasn't regenerated. So it should just say "It can't be regenerated this turn." The main confusion comes from the fact that you can't regenerate from -1/-1 counters, so why the regeneration clause is there is a bit weird to me.

It could, however, be a 4/4 with a regeneration shield and non-zero damage marked on it.

Well, it's been over a week since I posted here, so I thought an update is in order. Working on balancing the current cards before branching out on the new ones so that is slowing down my progress, but I am happy with what I have so far. I will be trying to release a handful of new cards each week until the set is ready for showcasing.

@Decembra - I agree with you wholeheartedly. This change has been implemented and you will see the corrected rarity in the current posted version of the card.
@Anuttymous - Yep, another snow set. I tried working on other sets, but for some reason I kept getting drawn back to this one. I saw your snow template, but I wanted to try something different to distinguish it from your Frostfall set. As for Magic grammar, I saw your syntax tutorial and it's been helping. Thank you. As always, you are an incredibly helpful member of these forums.
@ColinBeck - Thank you, your encouragement and everyone's it the reason I keep pushing ahead on this one.
@orp - I reworded the Noxious spray card to make it a little less wordy. Basically the idea I had was to throw -1/-1 counters on a creature and if that didn't kill it, your creatures could clean it up when attacking or blocking. The lack of regeneration will get it around black and green decks easier. Not a necessity but it adds a nice bonus to the card.
@DGoldDragon28 - Exactly. A happy smile

Also, I posted a couple new cards for the set up above on the original post, and below in a spoiler. These are some of the more 'unique' cards the set will have to offer. Hope you enjoy. As always, thank you for the feedback.

So these cards are interesting.

Scrying Mirror: I hear Sol Ring is pretty good. This card is Sol Ring with the potential to be a draw engine too. Bah-roken.
Aetheriron Shield: I don't quite think this works within the rules. Evasion isn't a term with any in-game meaning.
Archon: It's kind of confusing. My understanding is that it's meant to promote casting big multicolor fatties, but it comes out way too late for that. I'm also not sure why you didn't go for Mycosynth Lattice text.
Fogwell Whatshisface: Goes infinite because the token copy becomes attached to him, creating another token copy... etc. Cool idea, though.

How did you get that effect on the rare/mythic authentication seal?
EDIT: Ah I see what you did. Figured it out

So both Scrying Mirror and Essence of the Hunt are way too good at boosting mana. These type of effects are usually 2 mana symbol and ETB tapped or 3 mana symbol. No both of them produce a pretty good upside too. The Mirror especially is crazy good. The card draw element should also tap to use.

Fogwell Metalsmith is quite cool. His flavor is half there... why does the equipment he forge break down when the source does? Not much of a forger...

The wording should be this:

"Whenever an nontoken equipment is attached to Fogwell Metalsmith, put a token onto the battlefield that is a copy of it for each Soldier you control attached to each of those Soldiers. Whenever Fogwell Metalsmith leaves the battlefield or becomes unequipped, exile those tokens."

The way you worded it now two of these guys make an infinite loop and forced draw.

Check out my updated set hub.

Archon of the Alliance: interesting card but there is a wording issue. If it's supposed to do what I think it is, it should say

"You may pay X mana symbol rather than the mana cost of each creature spell you cast, where X is the converted mana cost of that spell minus 1."

All in all looks like an interesting set. I was barely alive when Ice Age came out so I'm not too familiar with the lore there, but looks awesome still Stick out your tongue

@venser - If you're referring to the Disney based Frozen, you're in the wrong ballpark. This is good ol' Magic: The Gathering Ice Age-type cards; however, trying to bring them up to the current power level. 'Frozen' Dreams refers to an ancient and malevolent force, known as Marit Lage, who has been trapped beneath a glacier since the Ice Age. From beneath the Ice, her followers have followed her demands over thousands of years through both decrees, and subconscious manipulation from their goddess below the ice. There will be no frost princesses or whatever goes on in those movies (sorry). Instead you will have a megalomaniac b*%ch bent on Dominarian conquest that has been brewing for several millennia. And don't worry, you will see more.

Update!I am terribly sorry for the delay on new cards. I have recently gone through a cross-country move. With that move, I have been without my computer for several months and my post has gone into decline. Adding the holidays onto that, I have not been able to look at this set file for a good three and a half months. From this point on, I plan on having more consistent set updates and I hope to have more cards posted before the end of the month. With that being said, a lot of my recently posted cards were deemed unbalanced. I was trying to not only design cards on a crunched timeline before the move, but also trying to keep attention on this particular set with high powered cards. I, as a human being and like most designers I assume, enjoy having my set being talked about, hyped, and on the rare occasion praised. Because of this, I put out some really rushed cards, which I intend on balancing over the next couple weeks. For the rushed state and overpowered nature, I am sorry. I am continuing work on Frozen Dreams to bring a balanced, and more than anything FUN, set to everyone that may be interested. I thank you all for your support so far and hope to hear from you soon.

The movie's characters are a princess and a newly-crown queen adept in cryomancy that her emotions are just as capable of controlling.

Are you still working on this? Many of these cards have wording issues (I'll look at them later, when I have more time, if you are still active). Also, some are a bit too strong (other than those mentioned before, those are broken). Also, the set uses both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters. It's not a problem, as long, as you are aware of this, since Wizards' official policy is to only use one of these types in a set (I'm myself working on set using both).

Lastly, I think, I'll be borrowing Accolade, if you don't mind.

Thanks for the interest! Unfortunately a few months ago my computer crashed twice and I neglected to make a backup on the second reinstall. The set file and hundreds of pieces of artwork were lost. Some day I may get the motivation to rebuild it from scratch but for now I've put MSE on the back burner. This was actually the second iteration of a set I started years ago, so I'll eventually build it again for a third time. For now I'll just have to admire all the great cards on the forums and get some inspiration.
