I really like this vertical cycle challenge. I find it a lot more fun than the usual "make 4 other versions of this card" challenges I usually see here. Good stuff.

ENTRY
Verdant Anima
Land Creature -- Forest Elemental Common
As long as you control two or fewer basic lands, Verdant Anima isn’t a creature.
As long as you control five or more basic lands, untap Verdant Anima during each other player’s untap step.
{1/1}

Nissa's Familiar 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Creature -- Elemental Uncommon
Tap symbol: Add to your mana pool one mana of any color a land you control could produce.
Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you gain 1 life.
{1/3}

Ashaya, Awoken World Red mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Legendary Creature -- Avatar Rare
When you cast Ashaya, put a +1/+1 counter on each land that produced mana spent to cast Ashaya and those lands become 0/0 Elemental creatures. They’re still lands.
Whenever Ashaya attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on it and on each attacking land creature you control.
{2/4}

Zendikar Ascendant 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Planeswalker -- Zendikar Mythic Rare
+2 Loyalty Put a colorless basic land token with “Colorless mana symbol, Tap symbol: Add two mana of any one color to your mana pool.” onto the battlefield.
-3 Loyalty Search your library for a creature or a green planeswalker, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
-7 Loyalty Lands you control become 4/4 Elemental creatures with protection from colorless until end of turn. They’re still lands.
Starts with +5 Loyalty

SUPER FANCY RENDER

NOTES AND STUFF

I had a LOT of fun with this vertical cycle. The idea was to show the development of Nissa's relationship with what would eventually become Zendikar itself. The idea being that at first, Nissa was not fully able to tap into her own power, and so the manifestation of Zendikar's will showed up only as a little Dryad-Arbor-esque creature. But as she grew and learned, Ashaya (Canon: that's what she named the avatar of Zendikar) also grew. And grew. And grew some more, which culminated in Nissa fusing herself with Ashaya in a last desperate bid to overpower the Eldrazi incursion (or something, idk). The result was Zendikar Ascendant. Make of that what you will.

I also really like the little harmonies going on in this cycle. Zendikar Ascendant makes basic land tokens, which lets you meet Verdant Anima's trigger requirement for untapping. Verdant Anima itself gets to benefit from Ashaya's attacking clause. Nissa's Familiar gains you tons of life everywhere. Fun fun fun.

The only thing I have an issue with is Zendikar's -3 ability. It doesn't feel quite there. I needed something vaguely blue-flavored, so I went for searching and card advantage. But if Nissa is already part of Zendikar, searching for a green walker is kind of redundant. Maybe I should have gone for some sort of blue-flavored colorless-hate. Idk.

P.S. -- For those wondering about the dual artist credit on Zendikar Ascendant, I had to do a bit of photobashing because Pete Mohrbacher's original artwork was 16:9, and I needed it to be taller to work in the planeswalker art slot. So I found a compatible landscape by Adam Paquette, and set my considerable Photoshop skills to work.

@DoomSp0rk: Very interesting idea. I have one nitpick- Colorless mana symbol for a cost requires colorless mana. If you mean 'one mana of any color' than 1 mana symbol is still valid.

Digiman - I do indeed mean Colorless mana symbol. The flavor is that when Nissa and Ashaya fused to become Zendikar, it triggered the rebirth of the plane (or something like that) Converting Colorless mana symbol into colored mana is perfect for this. Also, it would be kinda overpowered if it was 1 mana symbol --> 2 of any one color, and even moreso if each land just tapped for 1 of any color. The requirement that you have actual colorless available puts the tiniest damper on it, but the basic land tokens still get tons of utility from the other effects in this cycle.

Sticks. Okay
I think Druidical Crook should give at least a +1 attack, being a stick you can poke people with it, can't you? And why it's the only one who messes with lands?
To be honest, I don't see any "evolution" theme here, they all do things so differently from the others, also, there are two rares there, son. '-'

I don't know if it was still a work in progress, but anyways:
I liked Animist, not too spetacular, but fine.
Olem Mystic is really nice to make a mana dork, since a straight mana dirj for 1cmc is considered somehow not that healthy for standard these days.
I liked the Wildfire push, a repeatable 3 damage sounds powerful but animist somehow makes it balanced. (kinda)
I don't see 'mythic' in Feil, I could totally see this a rare. Specially because, unless the set has lots of ways to make lands creature (shouldn't the paired line have "(It's still a land)"? Stick out your tongue), this doesn't seem that powerful in limited.

Simple and effective.
Durapel made me love this cycle, maybe power-level-wise its a little 'too fair', but I'm okay with that. Not much else to say.

Well, this is a fine cycle, very linear with the growing of the little cub, all 4 cards are very good limited cards and possible constructed cards (Woodrusher being the least imo).
Very nice cycle, good job. A happy smile

I loved the reference ! :3
The Maiden is super-crap, why have defender? Fa Mulan was kind of *too* balanced, I expected something more powerful for the mythic slot... :/
Overall it's a fine cycle, not very exciting besides the reference.

Interesting the addition of green for the innistrad zombies;
I don't know if it was intended that the common and uncommon exiles any card, not creature cards, which is flavor fail. -.-
The last ability of the Bellowing Frightmass should be "then return a card at random from your graveyard to your hand."
The Deathwaster Titan is a mess. I bet the art would be lots of stuff stitched together. But it's a very nice creature, a good target for reanimator Winking smiley

Hm... okay. '-'
Orphan looks a little 'complex' for the common slot, specially since the vigilate is really simple
The wording in Phantasmal Knightmage is really bad, why not "Whenever a creature dealt damage by ~ this turn dies, you may exile it isntead of putting in its owner's graveyard." and "~ has all abilities of creature cards exiled with it."
Also, the 'can't be blocked by creatures with converted mana cost 2 or greater' sounds bad if the point is to make him kill stuff.
Wardei has some wording issues aswell.
Other than that its ok... i guess

Frogs ! :3
Well, I liked the cycle, my only problem is with the uncommon one, why does it have flying (and is a bird?) and the later ones don't?
Kroakkok (( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ) is fine, his ability could be read "Other blue and green creatures..."
Overall a cute, ok cycle.

Ok, lets start with the common. Very bad stats and the ability is really irrelevant. Garbage by itself. Why not give it (all of them) lifelink?
Nobleman should reveal the card.
Prince isn't very good either, stats are terrible, and the ability is not balanced at all. >.>
Krystane is good, maybe that ability makes him too good. I don't know
Very bad cycle, balance was terrible, the best thing here were the flavor texts which were 'fine'.

Viashinos, I love them A happy smile
Ok, I don't see 'Animist' on that common guy, but its a fine card.
I would like better if the BR: was a "Look at the top (x) cards of your library, you may put it (any number of them) into your graveyard." It looks more black and red to me than straight scry.
Vio Sym Zol is powerful, the +1 makes him too powerful maybe.
I liked the cycle overall, all cards seem playable and fun.

Wow ! That's what I call an entry
My only two problems with your entry are:
-Why the bad wording? :'( They're such amazing renders...
(It should be "Tap symbol: Add to your mana pool one mana of any type that a land you control could produce" and "Add TWO mana of any one color..." >.>)
-How can a plane planeswalker away from itself? '-' Even if Ashaya sparked, I think Zendikar (the plane) would have problems when she planeswalked away from it. (The Avatar of Zendikar outside of Zendikar so many zendikars to give )
I'd much rather if the mythic was Nissa and she spawned Ashaya in some way.
Even though I had these problems with your entry I still think it was a great one. The power-level were nice in all of them (maybe the uncommon one is a little above, but still.) and obviously amazing art. Nice job

PS. @Guhkun - the flavor for Zendikar Ascendant was that the Planeswalker Nissa and Ashaya (the living Avatar of Zendikar) fused under some desperate circumstances, and became a planeswalker whose power encompassed all of Zendikar. Whether this means the plane itself can planeswalk, I'm not sure, but I enjoyed thinking about it.

Also sorry about the wording. I really should have a little cheat sheet for standard wordings, especially when it comes to whether or not I should use numerals or written numbers.

-5 Loyalty You get an emblem with "At the beginning of your upkeep, return target creature to its owner's hand as long as that creature's power is less than the power of a creature you control."

If any of you didn't know, Turi is Kiora's sister. The last time we know Kiora saw her was right before she planeswalked (Because she got eaten by a giant serpent). The last time we saw Kiora (as far as I remember} was her leaving Zendikar because she didn't believe the gatewatch could take down the titans and she felt bad.
I know Guide of the Depths' flavor text doesn't add to the story, but I already had it and I like it.

@yoshi: So with Rise from Despair, if there are enough cards in graveyards you can either sacrifice all of your Scion's and kill your opponents with the first choice or sac them all and then mill them. Huh.
I'm not sure how I feel about That Which Carpets The World being a Scion itself, since only the tokens have ever been Scions... And why exactly does it need to be one? Plus, the Scions are MEANT to be the weakest eldrazi. They feed on mana and then channel it to serve their masters (the titans or other gigantic eldrazi) so why exactly is a big eldrazi that would be their master be one itself? IT DOESN'T MATCH UP WITH ELDRAZi HIERARCHY.
Apart from that mini rant, I like the cards. Good job

Judging now.

Judging Complete!

Judging:

digiman619

Young Survivor: I'm going to assume this is a 1/1. I like this. I almost like it too much. Abzan Tokens would eat this for breakfast - and then poop out more tokens. Scary good.
7/10.

Utility Belt: Feels overcosted for its effect. I would have actually switched the rarities on Survivor and Belt (not chronologically correct, but oh well).
6/10.

Bruce, Dark Knight: Just a bit overpowered. Just a teensy little bit. I'd make the Tap symbol ability cost 1 or two mana.
7/10

Batman, Avatar of Vengeance: It's really very unfortunate that the name doesn't fit on a real card with that casting cost. That being said, this is a powerful card and is generally mechanically sound, but it's very niche. If your opponent is still trying to kill you with big creatures by turn seven or so, you're probably winning with White mana symbolBlack mana symbol anyway. Feels a bit win-more.
7/10.

Overall: Cycle would have benefited from renders. Needs some spit and polish. 7/10.

Flo00

Lightning Flash: An interesting concept, but this could be very scary in a Red mana symbolWhite mana symbol deck featuring lifegain and double strike things.
7/10.

Muscles of Earth: Ah, I see where this is going, but another pump spell makes the cycle a bit boring. Also I'm not sure what flavor explains why you only sac a land if you cast it on your turn. I understand the mechanical reason, but "if your turn, take disadvantage" seems like a thin thread to connect a whole cycle of cards with. 5/10.

Blood Boiler Demon: Now we're talking. This thing is naaaaasty, but again, the flavor isn't quite there. That being said, I'd love to play this in multiplayer and start helping people destroy each other.
8/10.

Seal of Might: This ought to be Red mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol instead of Black mana symbolRed mana symbol, because combat tricks. That would make this a super fantastic finisher. Only problem: "Each player discards his or her hand" isn't a downside. I might recommend a wording that gives you buffs based off of how many cards are discarded, but that's just me.
6/10.

Overall: This cycle left something to be desired. Didn't hang together as well as I'd hoped.
6/10.

guhkun

Whispers of the Night: I enjoy this card. Seems almost good under the right circumstances, which is what Black mana symbolBlue mana symbol is all about. However, I'd change the Flashback cost to Blue mana symbolBlack mana symbol and make it cantrip when you use flashback.
8/10

Midnight Cat: Just good. Good, solid design. Dis make DoomSp0rk happy.
9/10.

Oh'Nies, the Unholy Curator: I have this thing about apostraphes. There are grammatically appropriate ways to use them, but my opinion is that this one is edging towards Mary Sue territory. That being said, the only real thing I'd change about Oh'Nies is her second ability's cost. Maybe make it 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbol and Tap symbol?
8/10

Eternal Companionship: I wasn't expecting this at all. Thank you for staying away from the usual Planeswalkers and such. This is a flavor home run, and balanced to boot.
10/10.

Overall: This was a well-built cycle, and the mythic just brought it all together in a way that really resonated with me. Renders also were nice.
9/10.

Autumnstar00

Disciple of the Deep: Good card - if it was uncommon. You don't get that much text at common.
7/10

Guide of the Depths: I like this card. I like how it gets both bigger and easier to block over time. That being said, it can make 8/8 Leviathans without costing you mana. That's a bit overpowered at uncommon, pretty much regardless.
7/10.

Turi, the Mourning Seas: That's a lot of Scrying. This is very much removal bait, especially with the card advantage you get if you manage to untap with her. This should probably cost 4 mana symbolBlue mana symbol. That being said, it harmonizes with the rest of the cycle very well.
7/10.

Kiora, Tide of Melancholy: Entirely creatures-focused. Not quite good enough when we're used to Green mana symbolBlue mana symbol being the "get more stuff" color combination. Also doesn't have starting loyalty. If she starts at 3, 6/10. If she starts at 4,
5/10.

Overall: Having Turi pop into the cycle partway through was jarring. If each of these cards are different characters, it would have helped to make that obvious flavorfully. Mechanically though this cycle holds together pretty well. Needs renders. I'll be generous and assume Kiora starts at 3 loyalty.
7/10.

gyoza

Acolyte of Escher: This is just a worse Alchemist's Apprentice. Trading the sac ability for +0/+1 means nothing to Blue mana symbol.
4/10.

Wisdom of the Departed: A rather convoluted way to squeak an extra card out of a three-mana spell. At uncommon, this is overpowered. Should be Mythic Rare. I appreciate the attempt to get us a cheaper Brilliant Plan though.
5/10.

Touch From Beyond: Yes, Innistrad let blue exile cards from the graveyard to pay for zombies. However, this is too much mana for too little effect. You're looking for Blue mana symbolBlue mana symbol as a casting cost.
6/10.

Escher, Spirit-Caller: Poor M. C. Escher must be turning in his grave right now. That being said, I see where you're going with the whole spirit calling thing, but blue should NOT be exiling from other people's graveyards. If it only read "from the graveyard", this would be an extremely subtle and powerful card that could helm an EDH faux-reanimator deck.
7/10.

Overall: Things here seem to be either better or worse than they should be, but your design gets closer to acceptable as you go. 6/10.

yoshi

Aberrant Spawning: For Colorless mana symbolColorless mana symbol I'd say that this could be an instant. 1 mana symbolColorless mana symbol if you want to keep it a sorcery. Still, quite good.
8/10.

Skittering Bleakness: An interesting Eldrazi-style corruption of white's classic "three-drop army" creature. I would save mana to use on its ability when it's about to die. Interesting flavor.
8/10.

That Which Carpets the World: This name doesn't fit on a real card. This is why renders are so important. That being said, this is downright scary. Six power distributed across three bodies with some nonbasic hate tacked on? This is Captain of the Watch scary.
8/10.

Rise From Despair: Uh. Well, it does cost nine mana including three colorless, but by the time you cast this you can expect to be getting in the neighborhood of fifteen Scions. Feels like the Eldrazi just ate the meta.
8/10.

Overall: This started out cute and quickly turned into a tentacled nightmare. Good job actually scaring me without actually breaking the game, I guess. 8/10.

Do all of them have to be for the same type?
EDIT: and do they have to be for creature types that already have a tribal-ish theme?EDIT EDIT: ignore the part before the first edit. For some reason I read it as vertical cycle, not horizontal

You can choose other already existent tribes.

@fluffy-chan
Those that follow the same pattern as the characteristic races:
- have a main color (if not just that color)
- are stronger together
- aren't big by themselves (like are dragons for eg)
Etc

Closed. Judging

Here it is:

Flo00
I dislike how some lords have everygreen abilities but don't give them to their companions like usual. I think the Vedalken could have a second triggered ability like: "At the beginning of your end step, put target card exiled with ~ into your hand." It would be more balanced and better aesthetically.
Power-level-wise I think the blue one laughs at the others. Specially the black and green ones.
Rate: 2/5

LordDavenport
I find it hard to believe in a monored Goblin Wizard that doesn't do things wrong (Educator, a goblin? '-'), a monowhite Elf Soldier and Clerics in green. '-'
The names are very... underwhelming aswell.
Power-level is really over the top here, the red and black are really broken in limited and probably very powerful in a constructed format.
Rate: 1.5/5

fluffy-sama
I really like the balance here, very powerful effects in weak bodies for their mana costs. The green one being the best and the black one probably the weakest of them (why not deathtouch? Stick out your tongue)
Very simple and effective cycle, although some short flavor texts here wouldn't hurt.
Rate: 4/5

Autumnstar00
I liked the idea of Knights for all colors, but:
-Flanking in blue and green seems really out of color.
-Why does them give flanking to all other creatures? Shouldn't it be a knight-only mechanic?
I would like much better if their give their everygreen abilities instead of flanking.
The balance is fine here, not good enough to see competitive play, but fine limited lords.
Rate: 2.5/5

digiman619
Simple and really good. Playable in any casual/commander tribal deck of those types.
The goblin one could be potentially broken with already existing goblin lords. The Elf one looks powerful aswell, but giving the hasty nature of red, not as broken.
One more thing: Why not Merfolk instead of Wizard? >.<
Rate: 4/5

Senor Guacamole
Simple, but not good. '-'
White one: Noncombat face damage in white isn't very nice...
Blue: You do notice that the trigger goes infinite here, right? "you may exile" here would fix the problem, although it would still be broken. '-'
Black: Seems really underpowered compared to the others. It has the vampire feel, but 2/2 lifelinker for 1bbb is really bad.
Red: Oh, so the hasty one can have more than 2 base power (6 when attacking), but the vampire is a 2/2. Eh. '-'
Green: This has the best balance, definitely a good card. The only one I liked tho.
Rate: 1/5

@guhkun: Because Merfolk wasn't one of the 8 creature types that mattered in Onslaught, which is when I designed these. And it's clearly fluffy-dono ^_^.

Anyway! For my challenge, give me a monocolored land cycle that's Rare or Mythic Rare. The lands can also provide Colorless mana symbol if you want, but you shouldn't be able to get more than one color of mana from it.
