This is a challenge game where you design a cycle.
1 There should go one week or ten entries before judging.
2 The winner of the last entry makes the new one.
3 There should be approximately three words or a sentence that descripe the challenge e.g. (is commen, is enemy color, has cascade) or (cares about being the only card in some zone)
4 All entries should be in spoiler clamps [spoiler@] and [/spoiler@] remove @.
5 Please don,t look at other players entry, get you own ideers we know you can A happy smile

First challenge
is commen, is enemy color, has cascade
judging will be in a week

I agree, a wonderful idea for a challenge. Here's my riff on the Colorless mana symbol enemy-color cascaders:

First time for two
Elder’s Desiccation White mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Sorcery Common
Cascade (When you cast this spell, exile the top card of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom of your library at random.)
Elder’s Desiccation deals 2 damage to target creature and you gain 2 life.

Seer’s Intuition Blue mana symbolRed mana symbol
Sorcery Common
Cascade
Draw two cards, then discard a card.

Sycophant’s Caress Black mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Instant Common
Cascade
Target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn. Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield.

Veteran’s Tactics Red mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Instant Common
Cascade
Creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn.

Moulder’s Might Green mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Instant Common
Cascade
Look at the top five cards of your library, then put them back in any order. You may shuffle your library.

No flavour text because it won't fit the poor cards; not with all the reminder text around Stick out your tongue

Interesting challenge! When thinking about my entry I came to the two restrictions Cascade spell have so far: Each one has at least CMC3 to prevent kombos (at least to some degree) and all of them are multicolored - however the last thing (in comparison to the CMC thing) was never confirmed a real limit, all Cascade spells were simply printed within the multicolored-only set Conflux or within the five-color-theme deck. SO I wanted to do hybrid cards at first, but then had another idea and went with split cards instead - allowing me to design mono-colored cards that are enemy-colored Winking smiley

Well the first cycle of cascade had driffent types and converted mana cost almost all of you have the same type and converted mana cost.

wonderboy_7_7_7
You five creatures are quite good for being a common combared to bloodbraid elf, but since they are enemy color they seems okey. i love the flavor text.

Inanimate
Your card is exepensive and fair, its is brilient that you have made each card fit to the alare tri-color.

Cancelion
Wow cascade for two, i don't know if that would be fair. other wise you cards are fine, look at the two cascade cards with lowest converted mana cost.

Daij_Djan
I love duel cards and all of the cards are fair costet even with cascade (not Wish), but i would prefer that both sides of the cards where enemy colored.

Ayxmirdyrer
Again some quite powerfull cards with cascade, you should look at these two.

mod123
well the cards should be common, otherwise they feel quite mythic. Gizilian is the best and is to powerfull with the infinity unearth. (ellen should be from bant)

Winner
And the winner is Inanimate with fair costed cascade cycle.

Thanks for feedback - Wish's cost should go up to 3 mana symbolGreen mana symbol or 2 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol, you're right. It was a sorcery at first (like Saturation), but since the other half really wanted to be an instant, that was changed (and I forgot to change the mana cost).

This was a great challenge, and I really loved the entries! I think most people kept the costs and bodies similar to emphasize the cycle.

So, let's have that cycle, shall we?

Your challenge is to make a horizontal cycle of cards that each can be cast for free. The methods or conditions under which they can be cast for free are entirely up to you!

Best of luck!

One hot steamin' plate of delicious judging with a side of terrible jokes, coming right up!

Judging
Man, judging more than one card at once is always a weird experience. Since this is the cycle game, I'm going to approach these cards as a whole with my judging.

Sewn Eye
Defiance of the Angel 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Instant Uncommon
You may cast Defiance of the Angel without paying its mana cost if an Angel creature you control died this turn.
Return to the battlefield target creature card in your graveyard that was put there from the battlefield this turn.

You may cast Riddle of the Sphinx if you control an untapped Sphinx creature.
Counter target instant or sorcery spell.

Grasp of the Demon 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Instant Uncommon
You may cast Grasp of the Demon if a Demon creature you control is being blocked this turn.
Destroy target non-Demon creature.

Breath of the Dragon 1 mana symbolRed mana symbolRed mana symbol
Instant Uncommon
You may cast Breath of the Dragon without paying its mana cost if a player was dealt damage by a Dragon creature you control this turn.
Breath of the Dragon deals 3 damage divided as you choose among one, two, or three target creatures and/or players.

Maw of the Wurm 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Instant Uncommon
You may cast Maw of the Wurm without paying its mana cost if a Wurm creature you control is the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls.
Regenerate target creature. You may have that creature fight target creature you don't control.

It begins! This is a very strong cycle, with a very interesting and unique angle to it. These cards are very powerful when free, but their freeness (I hereby deem that a word) is very situational, and requires a mana-intensive dude to be out in order to trigger. Most of these cards are relatively balanced as 1CC cards; the green one, while unprecedented, is just a Regenerate tacked onto a Prey Upon, so it's more than fair.

And then there's Breath of the Dragon. This is quite good compared to the seminal Arc Lightning (now under the alias of Flames of the Firebrand) -- Each other card is a bit weak for its mana cost normally, but this is an instant Arc Lightning at 1 mana symbolRed mana symbolRed mana symbol, which is downright superb! If it was a bigger Searing Spear, I would happily endorse this card.

Another oddity I now notice about Breath of the Dragon is that its trigger is different. Each other card punishes your opponent for interfering with your dudes; while the Riddle isn't obvious about it, it's intended to counter a removal spell flying towards your sphinx. Yet, the Dragon one triggers upon damage.

I'm also wary of your free removal in Grasp and Maw -- those are both pretty powerful removal spells already, and making them free is dangerous, as it can wipe a field considerably.

I do love the cycle, and it relies on multiple factors to push it into making itself broken; it'd need more than one in your hand at once, the relevant creature on the field, and to not clog your hand early on. I approve.

Mod123

I can't be bothered to write these out. Sorry.

So, let's begin... for one, all of these are extremely wordy, and very confusingly wordy at that, for what amounts to a relatively boring effect -- cost reduction. I do have to say, many of these ideas are quite clever. The white one not checking something your opponent controls feels off, though. I know that it's intended as a dual-purpose card, but it still feels off.

Comprehension is very powerful, even at 3 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol -- Curiosity, evasion, and a power/toughness boost all in one would cost at least 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol, so seeing it all one one card that can be cost for free is quite incredible.

Oath of Impatience is really poorly worded, more than the others, and references a status that barely appears in rules text any more. If this said "If a creature you control entered the battlefield this turn, you may cast ~ without paying its mana cost targeting that creature", it'd be much more concise. However, it'd lose the "check against your opponent" shebang.

Oath of Ferocity is similarly powerful to Comprehension. You severely underestimated the abilities of these cards, or how easy they are to get out.

Overall, the flavor is superb, and the abilities intriguing -- but it's just so confusing and worded so weirdly, I can't feel these are honed enough. They have potential, though.

"In this case, "choke on your words" is literal."

Violent Retort 1 mana symbolRed mana symbolRed mana symbol
Instant Uncommon
If a spell you control is countered by another player this turn, you may play Violent Retort without paying its mana cost.
Violent Retort deals 3 damage to each creature without flying target player controls.
"Let's hear you say that again with a few missing teeth!"

Well, one card sticks out in this cycle -- Wise Retort is absolutely bonkers. This is a far, far too good card -- it can get rid of artifacts, enchantments, and creatures, and it's only 3CMC, and it can be cast for free. White should not be getting unconditional removal like this.

Then you have the overpowered ones -- Wild Retort and Violent Retort are perfectly balanced at 1CC... but with the option to pay it free, they are too good. Cunning Retort is a Mana Short with the rarity dropped and the option to cast it for free. And then Cruel Retort is too good when cast for free early game, but pretty bad normally.

Overall, it just feels like you forgot they were able to be cast for free -- even if the situation where it can be cast without paying is unlikely, the cost should still reflect that possibility.

Black mana symbolGreen mana symbol: Until end of turn Jund Agresor gets +2/+2 and "sacrifice Jund Aggressor: It deals damage to target creature or player equal to it's power."
3/1

Naya Lifegiver 3 mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Creature - Elf Druid Uncommon
If you control a red, a green and a white permanent, you may cast Naya Lifegiver without paying its mana cost.
Red mana symbolWhite mana symbol, Tap symbol: Until end of turn, target land becomes a 5/3 red, green and white Beast creature. It's still a land.
0/4

To make it clear you need three permanents, you need to spell it out: "a permanent, a permanent, and a permanent".

Now, onto the cards... I find it weird that the activated ability for Bant, Jund, and Naya gives them abilities in their own color pie, but costs the colors of the rest of the shard. Meanwhile, Grixis and Esper have an ability that does require the infusion of the rest of the shard. Very odd.

I appreciate how all of these work so well with the rest of their shard, using abilities that synergize well with each of their playstyles. It's subtle, and elegant. Nice work on that end.

Awakener Druid indicates Lifegiver is a bit weak, as Awakener Druid doesn't need to be tapped to animate the land. if the land had a bigger butt (say, a 5/5), it'd be more fair.[/card]

Jund Aggressor is very, very powerful -- it can repeatedly buff in one turn for some big bodies, and then swing in to your opponents face for a knock out. If I cast him turn three (with a Firewild Borderpost, Jund Hackblade, and Sprouting Thrinax, on turn 4 I can pump him up to 7/5, and then deal 7 damage to target creature or player. If the boost only happened once per turn, this would be more fair -- but as-is, that's powerful!

I also applaud you on Grixis Officer, as you subtly discouraged him from repeatedly drawing you cards in one turn -- as he'd kill himself. He works far better as a single blowout to give you two cards and +2 to everything that survives. Very interesting.

Overall, a creative bevy of cards, and ones that each are subtle and intriguing. Nice work!

Finalists
The two finalists for this round are Sewn-Eye and Jolykj. Sewn-Eye had some wayward balance, but I personally felt his cards were flavorful and intriguing -- meanwhile, Jolykj had a home-run with the flavor and cyclical nature of his cards, and gave them each a unique identity... but they were very oddball, and the balancing erratic.

In the end, I must declare our winner to be...

Drumroll please
Sewn-Eye! While your cards were honestly a bit strong, I really loved the creativity of the cycle, and I thought that the flavor was superb. Your balancing required some tweaks, but the ideas had so much charm and charisma, I loved it. Nice work!

I had different ideas for this one, so how about this:

Cycle
Common
Failed Transformation 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Instant Colorless mana symbol
Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, put a 0/1 blue Weird creature token onto the battlefield.

Uncommon
Theft of Thought 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Instant Blue mana symbol
Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, draw a card.

Rare
Rechanged Shape 4 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Instant Red mana symbol
Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, you may put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of target permanent.

Mythic
Perfect Alchemy 5 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Instant M Mana for MTG Extra
Counter all other spells. For each spell countered that way, search that spell's controller's library for any number of nonland permanent cards with total converted mana cost equal to twice that spells converted mana cost and put them onto the battlefield under your control, then shuffle that player's library.

To be continued Completed! Sorry for no flavor texts this time.

As Photobucket wants me to pay 400$/year to link to my images, I'll relocate all renders.

Wow, I'm so sorry, guys. This thread fell completely off my radar. I'll judge now. I'll keep it short and simple. Luckily, cycles lend themselves to being judged as a whole.

Noahlotr
The flavor's there in your cards, but the problem is that your cards are just lacking in power. By far the biggest problem with your cards is the fact that your cards only really half-effective. The haste is 95% of the time just not very helpful. If you're paying Red mana symbolRed mana symbol to give your creature haste, that means your creature is being dropped 2 mana symbol earlier than it should be. Would you rather have a Shivan Dragon or a Furnace Whelp with haste and first strike for one turn and a second card? Single target haste should, in my opinion, cost zero mana. Ideally, it'd be printed as part of a cycle of "free" cards that require you have a basic land of a certain type to cast.

This only applies to the first three cards, though. The mythic rare, Battlesun Blaze is quite well-designed in my opinion, though the double strike added to the pseudo Trumpet Blast effect might be too much. Either way, I think it compares nicely with True Conviction, which completely blows Rage Reflection out of the water.

Daij_Djan
This a cool cycle for sure. Failed Transformation is definitely a card players could get mileage out of, though Theft of Thought is just a bad Dismiss. That's not to say that it takes away from the cycle, though. Rechanged Shape is a bit off in terms of flavor (I expected something closer to Counterlash) but it works. Perfect Alchemy, though, is quite the gem. Great card. Great cycle.

jolykj
The reprint is fine, as long as you didn't rip an actual cycle. The cycle itself seems... I dunno. Honestly, I think it's overall on the strong side, but not overly so. Odric's Call is quite balanced when compared to, say, Survival Cache and I actually quite like it. Eesha's Hope is also appropriately costed. I can't say much about Feudkiller's Verdict, but Avacyn's Blessing is certainly incredibly powerful. I mean, wow. It's an instant speed 4/4 flier for three mana. As far as aggro is concerned, you're getting that Angel 100% of the time, unless your opponent happened to resolve their own prior to this one. I mean, wow. The triple white is a little restricting, but I think this one is a little over the top.

mod123
Honestly, your cards aren't exactly... interesting. They're just big and splashy, and not much is going on that's particularly "wow"-ish (aside from the sheer brute force the cards provide). They're just too painfully similar. The fact that they were all colorless, and all tribal sorcery Eldrazi spells provided a solid cycle. You didn't need to make them all do the same thing, except "better than before".

Traevor's Wake 4 mana symbol
Tribal Sorcery — Eldrazi Colorless mana symbol
Target creature you control gains annihilator 2 until end of turn.

Traevor's Approval 5 mana symbol
Tribal Sorcery — Eldrazi Blue mana symbol
Until end of turn, target creature you control gains annihilator 2 and "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, put that many 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creature tokens with "Sacrifice this creature: Add 1 mana symbol to your mana pool" onto the battlefield."

Traevor's Malice 9 mana symbol
Tribal Sorcery — Elrazi Red mana symbol
Creatures you control gain annihilator 2 until end of turn.

Traevor's Outrage 15 mana symbol
Tribal Sorcery — Eldrazi M Mana for MTG Extra
Until end of turn, creatures you control gain trample, annihilator 2, and "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, put that many 8/8 colorless Eldrazi creature tokens with annihilator 1 onto the battlefield."

Ayxmirdyrer
Aside from the fact that you've got an incredibly loose cycle here, the cards themselves seem pretty okay power-wise. Snuff is... usable, though not exactly playable. Not a big deal. Harvest Quintessence is a great card. Word of Slaying is very cool. Bury Alive (Buried Alive?) is... okay, I guess? The effect itself is incredibly weak, but the fact that it's quadruple black really pulls the card down. Phyrexian Obliterator is what a quadruple color card should be. Black mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol for something that should cost about 5 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol, not a 4 mana symbolBlack mana symbol effect.

And as I said, your cycle's very, very loose. Your removal spells are just... a little too different. Nothing ties them together, as opposed to Daij_Djan's counterspells. And Bury Alive doesn't fit at all in the cycle, especially since it's the only one that's different. I could see a cycle of cards that synergeized off of each other, but that's the entire cycle.

Sorry for the wait, guys. Seriously. There were some quality cycles and cards here. Even with only five entrants, it was a pretty tough choice deciding who wins this round.

After much internal debate, the winner is...

Spoiler:
... Daij_Djan!!!

Of all the other entries, your's was the one that both most felt like a cycle and was just overall well-designed. Congratulations!

Many thanks for the win - and don't worry about the delay, that happends Winking smiley I do think you misread Bury Alive though, btw^^ (but I asked myself, if that card is relly better than Unmake, actually..)

Anyway, please have a little paitience with me for figuring up a new contest - it will be up till this night at last (european time)!

EDIT: Here's the next challenge, already:

Design a horizontal cycle of cards with converted mana cost 3 without colorless mana in its costs! You're free to use all sorts of colored mana you like (as long as it still makes sense as a cycle, of course), whichever rarity you chose (but all five cards should have the same!) and may even use different card types as long as they still make sense together!

As Photobucket wants me to pay 400$/year to link to my images, I'll relocate all renders.

@Daij_Djan - You are right about bury alive being read wrong: it basically kills anything that doesn't have the Darksteel Colossus graveyard ability. On a somewhat unrelated note, I really liked Snuff, because of Birds of Paradise and Llanowar Elves.

Yeah, I did misread it, whoops. The wording's a bit awkward, but I get why you did it, and it makes a little more sense as a mythic.

@Ayxmirdyrer: Even if it kills everything, I still don't get it as a mythic. Unmake still seems even stronger and easier to cast while being a simple common.. Absolutely agree with you about Snuff, though!

EDIT: Ah, the non-targeted part was intentional - I missed that, actually Winking smiley

Unmake is strong, and still a common, and even an instant, the only thing Bury Alive has over it is that it hits hexproof and even pro-black creatures (Protection covers Damaged, Enchanted, Blocked, or targeted). You could bury an Emrakul, but it would go back into their library, though that is better than seeing one on the field.

Anyways, it's time I made a cycle in response to the challenge.

Ok then, this contest is now closed - please no further changes of entries!

OK guys, as I always did within this contest in the past, my comments will be aimed more at the cycle as a whole rather than at its individual cards (unless that's really required). Here we go:

Ayxmirdyrer
These cards really have completely different powerlevels (this totally reminds me of a specific CMC1 cycle from Alpha..), seriously. Also I don't really get the prevention clauses – it might be fine on Planeswalker's Rage - yet it looks completely chunky on the other ones..

spazlaz
Sadly your cards were taken down already..

Flo00
Strong and interesting cycle (I've always been a fan of using Lifelink the way Blazing Light does^^). Four-Armed Executioner and Rot Crawler are seriously undercosted, though.

MrShinyObject
Really not a fan of these kinds of costs, yet this is my issue rather than yours. That aside the cycle looks fine, some minor issues aside.

guhkun
Powerful yet (as far as I can tell without playtesting) apparently balanced rare cycle. New Prahv Emissary's repetative scrying looks a little unfitting for white imho, also Rix Maadi Prankster definitely looks out of place due to its lone tap-ability.

yoshi2001
Definitely unique costs, no doubt. Cycle is very powerful, yet it seems it might work at mythic. Bonus point for the flavor texts!

And the winner is
yoshi2001!

MrShinyObject is the runner-up. Nice cards, everybody!
