Community Set: Ovinara, New Tribal Matters Block

The title says the idea.

Basically this is an idea for a new tribal matters block community set.

Tribes:

Elves Green/White
Goblins Red/Green
Merfolk Blue/Green
Cats White/Red (Like the cats that appear in the wild)
Darklings Black
Elementals Red/Blue/Green/White
Birds Blue/White
Vampires Black/Blue/Red
Shapeshifters All Colors

This set will be all Creatures (except for the Basic Lands) while Darkrealms will be all Non-Creatures.

Mechanics up for discussion.

Set Skeleton:
150 Colorless mana symbol
90 Blue mana symbol
75 Red mana symbol
30 M Mana for MTG Extra
30 Basic Lands

I would like to try making each tribe look like its an army.

Returning Mechanic: Kicker
Kicker has apppeared several times from Invasion to Zendikar but this time its something different. Some costs still use mana but otherhave a tribal twist: you must tap creatures of a specific type instead!

Rehashed Mechanic: Choiceform:
This mechanic represents that when a Creature enters the battlefield you may add to it a Creature Type of your choice. Rehashed Changeling.

Storyline: Nicol Bolas has schemed a lot. He creates a Vampire Planeswalker Pet to help the Vampires enforce dominance then when everyone is vampire and wants to drink blood the next step will unfold. He will send them back to Alara and use them to mess with Alara for his own power. In oddity Paladia-Moors rises from a Miscast of Bolas and comes to try to stop Nicol Bolas plans.

I have to admit I never worked on a community set, but I'm thinking of doing so but only if I do so from the beginning. Looking at your list so far I have to say three 2-color tribes overlaping in a single color doesn't look good.. Also I have to admit I'd love to see different tribes (without being able to give you some right now, sorry), simply because these are so typical tribal matters block types and right now the list looks like a (second time counting Shadowmoor) color-shifted Lorwyn..

In Lorwyn, Kithkin, Merfolk, and Giants were White
and Goblins, Elves, and Faeries were Black

also, Do you have any theme ideas? Like another tribe?

Would a different version of kicker like tapping creatures of a specific tribe be a good idea?

Sorry about the first thing, I actually forgot the Giants tribe Winking smiley

Sadly I actually don't have any ideas for different tribes right now, I only know I really want to see at least something different. I mean looking at Lorwyn, Kithkins were "new" but actually simply felt like humans which made them quite boring (I think I remember an article saying they didn't want to go the human-tribal way back then so thought of kithkins instead) but I loved Treefolks instead. Yes, they already existed - but never as a pushed tribe. And I'd love to see something like this.

The creature tapping thing could work..

EDIT: Partly serious, partly not: Since I've just used them in a contest, how about devils? A happy smile Also I could imaging just like Alara's shards or Ravnica's guilds to give each used tribe it's own mechanic..

Morningtide's and half of Onslaught Block's theme of Classes is uncomfortable due to classes not neccesarily being united by a goal.

This block is about tribal conflict.

Ninja'd while editing my entry Winking smiley

Only fast note (really have to go now, sorry): If you really want the tribe-conflict thing, different mechanics seems like the right way to go (so no Clash-like all-tribe mechanic)

(and I love devils - preferences differ Winking smiley )

Lorwyn did a good job making all tribes share their mechanics while Making the tribes feel mechanically different.

OK, after three days some additions:

First about the "3 tribes in one color" thing: Don't forget one tiny but important fact: Lorwyn was bigger (122 commons versus your 100 - a huge difference!) so it could support more tribies. If you don't have a single nonbasic land or artifact at common, you have 20 cards for each color, leaving you (dependant on color, I know) let's say 10 creature-cards. Supporting three tribes with 10 cards while also adding some not-tribal-related creatures of different creature types (a must, otherwise it looks just bold) seems difficult..

Second about the non-Leonin cats: I like!

Third after a quick glimpse over my cards some tribes I actually could see being used for tribal (some have been done more or less slightly, others not - however Wizards proves with Vampires even building a tribe from nearly nothing is possible):

Beast
Centaur
Devil (I know, you don't like them)
Dryad
Illusion
Jellyfish (joke - but I love them Winking smiley )
Minotaur
Ooze (no joke, actually - i can see it working)
Plant (propably to close to Treefolks, though)
Troll

My favourites would actually be Beasts, Dryads (instead of elves actually, which have been done to death) and Illusions.

Each Tribe will get 10 Creatures at Common.

This also means each Color gets 20 Creatures at common.

The Tribal Skeleton now is:

Elves: 6 Green 4 White
Merfolk: 6 Blue 4 Green
Wildcats: 6 White 4 Red
Goblins: 6 Red 4 Green
Darklings: 10 Black
Elementals: 4 Red 2 Green 2 White 2 Blue
Birds: 6 Blue 4 White
Vampires: 6 Black 2 Blue 2 Red

Shapeshifter: 4 Each

20 non-creatures at common lokks pretty narrow - maybe some obviously tribe-aligned non-creatures, but only time can tell Winking smiley

Going by your list I'd prefer Skeletons, Wildcats and Birds (how could I overlook them?), if you mean the non-Aven ones.
Last place is Elementals - Lorwyn's actually were quite fine, but I don't like this creature type in general since it's always used when Wizards has no other idea what to do ("what could that be, an elf, a human, a beast?" - "No, that doesn't make sense - let's make it an elemental and skip over it.").

I knew about the basic lands-thing (since you listed them seperately in the first post), 20 cards still feel quite narrow - however I admit it could turn out right, only trying will tell Winking smiley

100% creatures seems pushed, but we'll see. A little sad you removed Skeletons - however I admit their design space is somehow limited (I was already thinkig about them) and Eyes may be quite interesting. Sadly I won't have much online-time until next week, so don't expact to much until then..

About Kicker as mechanic: How about some "basic Kicker" things in all tribe and some special twists (like your mentioned creature tapping) only for an individual tribe?

I decided tyhat the skeletons just seemed so far off from the other tribes.

sommbsnph - Please don't put unneeded space in your posts. If you need to edit something later, you can always do so (as long as nobody hits "reply" to your post). You can add whatever you want at that point.

I wanted a gap since it would seperate theme discussion with card discussion.
Why revome it.

Because it takes up a lot of space on the forum. Same reason we have spoiler tabs. SO that you don't spend the entire time scrolling for no reason. I don't see how that gap helped separate what you said.

Sometime within the next week I'll get my internet access back, but I have some free time now, so I'll use it to write a few things about the set (wanted to do that since I got your pm, actually).

So first up, I simply don't know whether I have enough time to do a community set now or not - my time will still be very limited (I really understood that while participating in the Duel Decks contest) and I also need some time to work on my own set.

Now, a few critisms to the actual state of this block: Do you still want to do 100% creatures for the first set? Yes, it happened once again, but thankfully will never happen again. Or did you already change that? Commons went up from 100 to 150 and you're talking about doing planeswalkers (btw, you do know the two links show nothing - neither renders nor abilities, do you?), so propably yes..

Also small question: What are "Darklings" supposed to be?

And at last a rather important thing. Please note that it's not meant personal, and it may just as well be a wrong impression since this only started, but until now this doesn't really feel like a community set. You've asked several questions but in the end changed everything just the way you wanted afterwards anyway, so until now this feels to me more like a "you can all watch me develop my new set and give me feedback/imput about it"..- Again, I may really be wrong about it, but it just feels this way and I'm not really interested in puting to much work into it that way (again also considering my own set)..

I no longer want 100% Creatures Set 1 but I do want 2/3rds Creatures Set 1. I also no longer want all Non-Creatures Set 2.
I was planning on coming up with the Planeswalker Abilities as a Community.
Darklings are like Ghosts.

Everything will be designed as a community.
