Hey guys!

I thought it'd be nice to spice up the forum with another reliable ol' card-creation thread, one you can always go to for satiating your burning desire to make more wonderful Magic cards. However, I wanted to make another post-by-post game, one that doesn't (ostensibly) have a week between rounds!

Therefore, I introduce The Segue Challenge!

Dictionary wrote:
Segue (seg-wey, sey-gwey)
Verb
To make a transition from one thing to another smoothly and without interruption.
Noun
Any smooth, uninterrupted transition from one thing to another.

Thanks, handy-dandy dictionary!

The rules of this game are simple:

You have to match the challenge given by the previous poster ... and the one given by the previous previous poster!

That's why it's called the 'segue' challenge -- it creates a smooth transition, where each card 'fades' into the next, sharing half of its content.

Example for clarification
For instance, Alice is given the two limitations: "Legendary" and "Multicolored card". Her limitation she adds is that it must "Draw cards."

Bob then has to make a card that follows the last two challenges; "Multicolored card, that draws cards.". He commands that the next card made be a "Sorcery".

Charlie, after Bob, now has to make a "card-drawing Sorcery." The next challenge he gives is that "it must discard cards."

And so on and so forth!

The guidelines are as follows:

1.) Try to keep your challenges flexible! Whether they be modal, or simply broad, remember that they are going to be paired with another challenge: so don't make it too specific, or else complications may ensue!

2.) Try to make your challenges synergize! Making your challenge work well with other ones makes the game more interesting.

3.) If someone is ninja'd (two or more posts responding to the same challenge), simply go with the first one.

4.) If the previous entry fails to comply to the challenge, simply inform them and wait for an edit. If there is no edit within 24 hours, then the game proceeds, ignoring their entry.

5.) This one is more of a rule: Always rate the previous card. These games are valuable ways to learn design, and feedback and critique are wonderful for amateur card-designers everywhere. Extend the courtesy.

Have fun, everyone!

Here are the first two challenges for the next person to start with:

Make a card which portrays a Ravnican.
Make a card using hybrid mana.

However, I think the discard-draw could be "each opponent discards a card." (which could be what you meant for it to be). Is the name a reference to WarCraft?

Gitaxian Research is very clever, but I think this would work better as a black card, what with Phyrexian Arena being very very similar to this card. The idea of trading life for cards is fundamentally black -- and while I can see it making sense in a Phyrexian environment, the fact the drawing doesn't start until 10 or less life feels very black.

I like the flavor with the 'Fateful Hour' mechanic on Ransacked Chapel, but (as a newer Magic player) I don't see it being actually useful in a deck. It does seem like it would find its way into a set, though.

I'll continue from wonderboy_7_7_7's challenge as per the rules. At first I thought of Diseased Wastelands as overtly powerful, but considering you're down a land, it's pretty much perfectly balanced. Wonderfully flavourful too. Top-notch!

Returning: Make a Vedalken creature.
New: Make a card that gets less powerful over time.

Since we're at it, I'll rate storyweaver3000's card as well. The ETBT condition and costs are fine, but I'd rather have the same cost on both sides, probably the life payment. Great way of doing wedgelands.

Charm of Ugin: While I see how this card works, I find it a bit confusing. Were mechanics like this used in older Magic sets? I only started in M10. The awkwardness of it almost makes it feel like an uncommon for me, though, along with the fact that any deck could use it as a jack-of-all trades spell. Perhaps in older sets where spells were more powerful would this be a common. But I like it!

I really wanted to make something silly related to the 'Big Bang,' the event that many believe sparked the beginning of our Universe. Uuh, there's just too much going on with Planar Rebirth. I understand the design intent of a completely zany, off-the-ground card, but frankly, this is too nuts for an Un-set Big smile Two pointers on the wording: I don't think the cost reduction works as intended (don't know how it should be worded); and no need to mention "under your control" when putting tokens onto the battlefield - the game assumes that, unless otherwise specified, the tokens are automatically yours.

Pennant of Blood and Iron: Absolutely love the card, but it is ridiculously overpowered. The only card with the one-two punch that is deathtouch/first strike (without jumping through some hoops) is the M Mana for MTG Extra Glissa, the Traitor; for just two mana, that's too good. I'd say drop the first strike (or make it an activated ability, something like "A 2/B hybrid mana symbol.: Target artifact creature you control gains first strike until end of turn." - that does spoil the finesse somewhat, though), or up the cost to A 2/B hybrid mana symbol.A 2/B hybrid mana symbol.A 2/B hybrid mana symbol. and the rarity to M Mana for MTG Extra.

Phyrexian Exterminator - It meets the challenges, though that's not how I would have interpreted the "causes it to sacrifice itself" challenge. I see that part more along the lines of Necroplasm, where the sacrifice is not a choice, but a result of the ability. I'm not sure why Phyrexian Exterminator is green. It may be to justify the trample, though that seems a little tacked-on itself. Also, it's missing a rarity, which makes it hard to judge how balanced it is. All in all, a decent little card though it feels unpolished. 7/10.

(Losing life isn't red, ThisisSakon. It just feels like an obvious way to circumvent the challenge.)

Mind Failure is a too-good version of Traumatize. You don't often see cards that cost CCCC, such as Blue mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol, for good reason -- once you hit three colored mana, it's very difficult to play the card in anything but a mono-color deck. Also, blue doesn't get to exile anything but a player's library; exiling the field is crazy for blue. 5/10, as I do like the idea of "exile everything except the top ten cards of each player's library", but not any other part of it.

Inkfathom Depthmage 3 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol

When Inkfathom Depthmade enters the battlefield, each player exiles the top five cards of their library.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may cast an instant or sorcery card exiled by Inkfathom Depthmage without paying its mana cost.

Esper Water Guard: Not bad, but the main issue with any card like this always ends up being keeping track with what it gains, if anything. Overall, 7/10

Naya Exuberant 2 mana symbolGreen mana symbolRed/white mana symbol
Creature - Elf Druid Uncommon
As long as you control a creature with power 5 or greater, creatures you control get +2/+2.
"The glory of the behemoths shall live forever."

Exuberant: This is a very cool card! It has a hefty and powerful ability, and it really pushes the "power five or greater" that makes Naya fun, and honestly, sometimes the weakest of the three shards. I love it, to be honest!

Esper Water Guard: Shouldn't this be an artifact? Also, I think you meant for it to be 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolWhite/black mana symbolWhite/black mana symbol -- the way you have it, it always gains vigilance, and can be an island-walking merfolk for 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol, which is really weird.

Blah! Ninja'd. Though that is funny how we both went for a red and black dragon based in Grixis! LOL
OK I can work with this! And I do like your dragon. It's balanced and has a fair unearth cost. 10/10

Naya Exuberant: The Effect really is quite powerful. That creature with power 5 or greater jumps to a 7 and the Exuberant itself jumps to a 4/4. In my humble opinion, I believe it would be more balanced to buff only other creatures with a power less than 5. Otherwise good concept. 7/10

Exuberent: If you have a 3/3 and and 5/5 turning creatures into a 4/4 and 5/5 and 7/7 and the new 7/7 is removed does the 2 cards continue to activate eachother in a chain started by the 7/7. Rules issue.

Enslaved Dragon - A classic beatstick that trades life for power! A little on the weak side, with MTG's current power level, but I still love it! 9/10

Shrine of the Unhallowed 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Tribal Enchantment - Zombie Red mana symbol

When ~ enters the battlefield, each player sacrifices a non-zombie creature.

Necromancy 5 - 3 mana symbol (3 mana symbol, sacrifice this permanent, return target creature with converted mana cost 5 or less from a graveyard to the battlefield under your control. That creature is a black zombie in addition to its other colors and types.)

Pray at the shrine, or hope it does not prey on you.

Returning: Make the card force each player to sacrifice something.
New: Make the card care about cards in graveyards.

Shrine - nice. I love the flavor, but it could have been a Tribal Enchantment - Zombie Shrine. 8/10

Face of Dread 3 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature - Zombie Assassin Red mana symbol
Deathtouch
When Face of Dread enters the battlefield, each player sacrifices a creature other than Face of Dread.
Face of Dread's power and toughness are each equal to the number of creature cards in opponents' graveyards.

Face of Dread: Really cute card. Can get big fast, but requires a bit more 'evenly spread' of a deck than Mortivore. Very cool.

Burned Into Memory 2 mana symbolRed mana symbolRed mana symbol
Enchantment Rare
When Burned into Memory enters the battlefield, exile all instant or sorcery cards from your graveyard.

Burned into Memory is one of those cards you like to plan a deck around. Although when I see the name and the ability I imagine more of the ability to copy and cast. But overall solid card. 9/10

Eldrazi Absorber 9 mana symbol
Creature - Eldrazi Red mana symbol
Champion a creature (When this enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you exile another creature you control. When this leaves the battlefield, that card returns to the battlefield.)
Eldrazi Absorber has all abilites as creatures in exile.
Annihilator 2 (When this creature attacks, defending player sacrifices two permanents.)
7/7

(I believe there may be some discrepancy with the ability that cares about exiled cards. But for this I am envisioning a set featuring Eldrazi that have begun to incorporate traits of their victims into themselves which then spreads via sliver style.)

Returning: Uses Champion.
New: Make an artifact.

I think the exile ability should be worded "Eldrazi Absorber has all abilities of all exiled creatures." I'd also make it just activated abilities to make it less zany, but other than that a fine job!

Sword of Lords and Ladies 3 mana symbol
Artifact — Equipment Mythic Rare
Champion an Equipment
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from converted mana cost 2 or less and from converted mana cost 4 or greater.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player loses half his or her life, rounded up, and double your life total.
Equip 2 mana symbol

A "lord" to the Sword of This and That cycle; it'd have to be in a Champion-heavy set, 'cause the reminder text won't fit in a million years Stick out your tongue

Sword - Having it only be defeated by creatures of CMC 3 is creative, but a +2/+2 bonus on a creature is enough to make is undefeated by almost any CMC 3 creature, and most damage-destructing spells are cheaper than 3.

Valor Stone 2 mana symbol
Artifact Blue mana symbol
Flash
Whenever a demon, vampire, or zombie would deal damage to you, instead it deals that much damage to its controller. If three or more damage is dealt this way, sacrifice Valor Stone.
When the priests of Avacyn blessed the towns each month, they would give the mayors of each a round smooth stone. The mayors didn't know what it meant, but they had no doubt of its power.

Returning: Hates a color without mentioning that color
New: Has some sort of protection

I like Valor Stone, but maybe it's a bit too powerful. If your opponent is attacking with a few zombies and you play it, you may reflect 10 or more damage with a two mana card, because all damage is dealt simultaneously and the stone isn't sacrificed in between damage of different creatures. I would make it prevention only. And it hoses a shard more than a color: zombies are blue/black and vampires are black/red (at least in Innistrad).

Mageslayer Knight 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Creature -- Human Knight Colorless mana symbol
