The Set Challenge Game

Basically, the goal of this game is to create a set. I bet you're thinking right now, "Don't we already have a game like that?" Well, this one is different. This is akin to the Challenge Game, rather than the other set-making games in this forum. Here is how this is going to work:

The poster before you is going to post a challenge. This challenge does not have to involve making cards. It can be a keyword, a plane, a story; anything you can think of really. Here is an example:

Quote:
I want you to make a new keyword that would fit into this set!

Then the next post would be,
Quote:
Flashcast <foo> (You may cast this spell any time you could cast an instant if you pay <foo> more to cast it.)

Next: Create a green enchantment that represents green’s hatred of technology on this plane.

As you can see, the second poster creates a new challenge afterwards. Now, let us move onto the third poster...
Quote:
Flashcast is nice, but I don’t think it fits into this set. I’m going to have to say Reject.

Corrosive Incantation 2 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Enchantment - Aura Rare
Enchant artifact
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, tap enchanted artifact. That artifact does not untap during its controller’s untap step for as long as you control CARDNAME.
Tapped artifacts lose all abilities as long as they are tapped.

Next: Make a common red card that represents...

Now, what is this ‘reject’ thing all about? Well, I’m not going to be moderating what goes into this set at all. That will be up to you guys. If you think something fits into the set, you can say Accept. Or, if it doesn’t fit into the set/the spot is most likely filled, you can say Reject. Feel free to rate the card/keyword/whatever if you want, but the important thing is accepting or rejecting it. Please use good judgment on this, and don’t reject everything. Accepting everything isn’t good as well, since we may get some bad stuff in the set that shouldn’t be there. Also, please don’t deny something just because you think you have a better idea. That is just plain mean.

Since I doubt you guys want to look through every page to find out what has/hasn’t been done, I will be posting (approximately) weekly updates with everything that has been done that week. It will contain all the accepted material, and will go into a set. You can look at all of this stuff here. It will also have the number of cards in the set, and other important information. Now for a few miscellaneous rules:

1. If you wish to include an image for a card, please give a link to the image and author so I can put them into the set.
2. There can only be one challenge involving mythics per summary. This means that if you want to post a challenge with anything mythic-like, and someone already has since my last summary, you can’t do it. You will just have to wait for me to update again before you can post it.
3. Please don’t post challenges that will significantly alter the current setup. This just screws with everything. Adding a new tribe is fine, but completely remaking something that has been ‘set in stone’ is not allowed.
4. It is recommended to make an alternate challenge that would work if your thing gets rejected. Look at the quote at the bottom of my post for an example. This is not mandatory, but it is heavily recommended, since having one challenge is almost forcing your idea upon the next poster.
5. If your idea is rejected, do not post a fixed version! It will not be accepted unless it is part of a new challenge, so posting a fixed version will only serve the purpose of clogging the thread.

I’m going to do a sample post, assuming that the challenge was to choose what is important in this set.

This sounds like an awesome game! Perhaps we could also include a development thread in the Make-a-Set forum, to work out kinks and small issues? I think this could be awesome, though.

Do you just want someone to start off with that example challenge, or set an initial one of our own?

The thread in the Make-a-Set forum is a good idea; I think I'll post updates in that thread when it's time.

I want people to start by answering my example challenge, and then building from there. They can Accept or Reject it; either is fine by me. It's just the way the game is played.

So, let me repost it:

Quote:
(this is the 'previous question') Next: Make something that is important to this set!

I think that this set should be heavily creature-based, with tribal themes. It would make for an interesting set.

NEXT: Create a location in a plane that would fit with creature/tribal themes!

Alright, awesome! I just wasn't sure if it was only a sample, or what.

Are we allowed to only accept certain parts of the previous post? If so, I accept the idea of a creature-based set, but I reject the idea of tribal. We just came out of an almost-tribal set in Innistrad, so I think jumping into another one so soon would be weird!

The plane we are on could be a place of primal power and primordial magic, where all life carries within its blood the capability of magic, and the plane is overflowing with mana and prosperity -- some place like Ir, perhaps? It would focus on big creatures, big time.

For a new keyword, we could go for something that uses a creature to cast a spell... Here's a rough idea, that obviously needs work:

Conduit (You may cast this spell by tapping an untapped creature you control and paying the difference in mana costs between this and that creature. Mana cost includes color.)

Helpfully, this works on creature-spells too, but I'd recommend focusing it on non-creatures. It also helps push a theme of 'big fatties'.

Or we could use a pseudo-keyword, 'Supremacy' or something could be a good name for it. It could be...
'Supremacy -- [As long as]/[If you] control a creature with converted mana cost 6 or greater...',

Hopefully these are all good suggestions! I love the idea for this contest. Let's make this awesome!

Next up: Make another keyword / pseudo-keyword for this set.

Okay, let me take a shot at this.

I accept Conduit because it really helps push the "creature-matters" theme of the set, but I reject Supremacy as it is because mana cost isn't the sole determinant of a creature's power, and the "big creatures matter" has been done already in Rise of the Eldrazi/Alara block.

Resonance with <type> <X>-- <cost> (You may cast this for its resonance cost if you control <X> or more <type> permanents.)

I'd put this on creature and noncreature stuff with the <type> set to creatures.

Okay, next: Suggest one more mechanic for our set. It can be a new one or a returning one.

Remember, you have to give a new challenge as well, and fulfill the previous challenge. And yeah, I completely forgot we've already had a big-creatures-matter set... woopsies.

I accept Resonance, though the way it is right now, it feels a bit clunky, but I really like what it does and how it supports tribal decks.

Backup - As long as you control another creature, that shares a creature type with this card, <effect>
Is meant to be only found on creatures and would encourage you to run tribal decks.

Next challenge: Think of a good creature type for a tribe and create an example card (mb using some of the keywords that were accepted so far)
Alt. Challenge: Create a character that is heavily involved in the story (either a new one or an existing char)

Very basic Example from me for the Backup mechanic:
------------------------------------------------------------
Imperial Guard White mana symbol
Creature - Human Knight Colorless mana symbol
Backup - As long as you control another creature that shares a creature type with Imperial Guard , Imperial Guard gets +1/+1.
1/1

Backup: I Accept this, though I think it should have a different name. I guess it can be discussed later.

Anyways, I decided on a new tribe: Insects. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been done before. I think that they will stick mostly in green, and focus on swarming. It would make them great for using Resonance. Anyways, here is the card:

Swarm Summoner 3 mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Creature — Insect Shaman Uncommon
Resonance with Insects 3 — 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbol (You may cast this for its resonance cost if you control three or more Insect permanents.)
When Swarm Summoner enters the battlefield, put two 1/1 green Insect creature tokens onto the battlefield.
1/1

NEXT: Create a nongreen tribe!

I thought we decided this wouldn't be a tribal set?

Also, "[type] resonance [cost]" is a bit cleaner to read.

@inanimate: Good suggestion with the slight Resonance rewording

I accept the Insect Tribe, I really like the idea (and Insects)!

I'd love to see a Minotaur Tribe in this set! I love them! Maybe mainly in red but also with white splash (I'm thinking of elderly looking white-fured cow-shamans Big smile)

Example:

Redcliff Charger Red mana symbolRed mana symbol
Creature - Minotaur Shaman Blue mana symbol
Backup - As long as you control another creature that shares a creature type with Redcliff Charger, Redcliff charger has "Tap symbol: Target Creature gains haste until end of turn."
2/2

Next: Continue with a non-red, non-green tribe (if the minotaur tribe gets accepted)
Alt. Next: Create or reuse another mechanic for the set.

@Bolas Dragon: I think you need to accept or reject the last entry.

If that's ok, I'll go with BolasDragon's challenge. If not, just ignore this post.

I accept beebles, just because I'd love to see uncommon creature types in this set and we could give Beebles a completely new flavor! *yay*

Okay, I will Accept Broodcomb. I also Accept the Minotaur tribe. Now, I'll go with the nongreen nonred tribe challenge.

Why don't we try something different, and make Humans the most evil race of the plane? They will fit into black and blue, and seek to control everything. I'll give an example of a card:

Darkspear Guard 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature — Human Soldier Common
Backup — As long as you control another creature that shares a creature type with Darkspear Guard, it has deathtouch.
“Just try to pass these walls, cretin.”
2/1

Next: Think of a guild, order, cult, society, or anything of that sort that fits this set! The species doesn't matter; just make the society!
Alt. Next: Come up with 3 or more other races that could be on this plane. They do not have to be major components of the plane, just races that fit there.

I totally accept the human tribe, i appreciate the idea very much!

I'll go with the cult challenge:

Sons of Sevexis
A group of mages and dark wizards that operate secretly and try to summon a great demon (Sevesix) by sacrificing Humans and other beings to him. (would support the theme of magic within all life, that is given to the great demon to be summoned by sacrificing them)

I would see this cult mostly in black, but also in blue or maybe red. It could come along with a new mechanic, that is about sacrificing creature of a certain type. Maybe we could reintroduce <creature type>offering the name would even fit very well and the way the mechanic works would support both the theme of the cult, feel black and also work well with the tribal theme in the set.

Example card:

Bloodgift 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Sorcery Colorless mana symbol
Destroy target creature.
Human Offering (You may play this card any time you could play an instant by sacrificing a Human and paying the difference in mana costs between this and the sacrificed Human. Mana cost includes color.)

Next challenge: Continue by repeating the first challenge of Grishnax
Alt. Challenge: Create a card that could fit one of the already existing tribes.

@Grishnax: Offering is a cool mechanic, and works well with Resonance and the apparently Tribal set. Resonance would fit more easily into White mana symbolGreen mana symbol: (hordes of creatures), and Offering would fit more into Blue mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbol. So they balance well, color-wise and gameplay-wise.

Of course, Conduit's new! And it's my baby. <:

I'm worried that it seems too complex to not be a rare, but i just liked the idea so much... also, the FT is a joke, not actually part of the card.

I accept Slavedriving Priest! I love the idea and the balance is quite nice. But i share your concerns about the rarity, as the effect is unique!

I'm thinking about a tribe of humanoid Wolf creatures that are mainly white (mb also with a slpash at black with some outcasts or a tribe of renegades). The have Soldiers and Clerics and live in the plains and steppes. All this together would create a new flavorful tribe that would fit the color(s).

Example Card:
Stardust Enforcer White mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Creature - Wolf Soldier Red mana symbol
Backup - As long as you control another creature that shares a creature type with Stardust Enforcer, Stardust Enforcer has Vigilance, First Strike and Lifelink.
2/2

Next Challenge: Come up with three cards that have different card types (instant, creature, etc.) for one of the tribes that already exist.

To me, Wolf seems iffy, but I guess that I'll accept it, since I like Wolf tribes.

The first creature type is Crabs. I like Crabs, and I think they would make a cool addition. They will appear mostly in blue. Maybe they are like to pray on Beebles...

Ah, Rats. What a great creature type. They will appear mostly in black, with possibly a bit in red. They spread disease, so deathtouch will probably be common among them.

Fearsome Rat Black mana symbol

“Come on, it’s just a rat... OH GOD ITS COMING AFTER ME!”

I've wanted to use Lizards in a set for a long time. They appear mostly in red, and maybe a bit in green. They are minor irritants to most of the mountain dwellers, meaning that they generally aren't very big and do tiny bits of damage.

I accept staff of peoples, however i feel that it could become quickly overwhelming in some situations.

Whitedust Expanse (White mana symbol minor: Green mana symbol)
The wolves are an independent, but efficient tribe. They hunt in small packs called Snags which are lead by the most intelligent wolves. They gather yearly on the darkest day of the year to mix tales of hunts and to find mates. The wolves are all to aware of the imminent destruction of the plain and worry for the other tribes safety. But everyone cant see eye to eye. They want to help the others but the tribes do not regularly communicate with each other. They someone to unite the tribes against the humans.

Decree: Create a background story for a pro or antagonist.
Alt. Press 1: Design / flesh out the story of the beebles.

May I also suggest that you keep a basic summary of whats happening at the top to picque the interests of newcomers.

The Beebles may look fairly harmless but it's their instinct and adaptability that helps them against threats to their society even though though posses relatively little conventional intelligence. In the Beeble bubble you will find a fully functioning society, however if you were to ask any one of them how it came to be they would not be able to answer. Whatever they need is eventually created through accident or unsolicited inspiration, they seem happy enough with their lot but are fiercely protective of their home and their allies.

Next: Create a legendary champion for one of the tribes (Beeble would be fantastic)
Alt Next: Get the story of the minotaur's started.

First strike
1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbol, Sacrifice a Human: Captain Bloodspyre gets +5/+0 and gain flying until end of turn. If this ability has been activated more than once this turn, sacrifice Captain Bloodspyre at end of turn.
2/2

Captain Bloodspyre is a dark sorcerer specializing in Sangromancy. He is also an adept swordsman, but his true power is in his blood rituals. These blood rituals are dark, terrible things, where Captain Bloodspyre takes the life of a fellow human to temporarily become immensely more powerful. If he gains too much power at once, however, he will die when it drains out of him, due to the nature of the dark magic.

Next: Create a legendary champion for a different tribe.
Alt Next: If you do not accept Captain Bloodspyre, create a new legendary champion for the humans.

I wasn't too sure about Racksha, but in the end, I decided that rejecting it would be best. When wolves were originally created, they were meant to be pure white. I don't think a monogreen legendary wolf is the best. Plus, I feel that the flavor text doesn't reflect the card at all, though this is easily changeable.

(Courageous Charge is ridiculously underpowered compared to Assault Strobe, and Tremendous Growth is similarly garbage compare to Predator's Strike.)

I reject this common cycle.
Hmmmm, while I agree that this is an interesting way to go with the cycle, some of the cards are overcosted even for their resonance costs as pointed out by Inanimate.

Noble Crustacean 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Creature - Crab Uncommon

When ~ comes into play, exile target card from a graveyard.
When ~ goes to the graveyard from anywhere, exil target card from a graveyard.

Don't know if DJ Indigo did start a new one. But how about just continuing this one?

I reject those cads, since the crab is simply too powerful and the lizard is very strong with sac abilities.

Since Apellosine forgot to post a new challenge, I'll just make a vanilla:
