Hey everybody, I saw some questions around the forum as to how one adds watermarks into MSE.

It's fairly simple, so let's get started!

We're going to find the folder called magic-watermarks.mse-include.

The two most important files here are called watermarks and watermark-names. Basically, these two files serve as the actual watermark definitions (in the style file) and the watermark keys (in the game file).

Extra
If you're trying to add a watermark to a template that isn't the MtG template, you'll also need a file called include. It simply has the header information:
  • mse version
  • full name
  • version
Dependencies and short name are accepted here as well.

In your game's choice definition for the watermark field, include watermark-names, and include watermarks in your style file.

Let's say I have an image called meep.png. I'm going to save it into this magic-watermarks.mse-include folder.

meep.png

Note that it's white with a plain black drop shadow. You can include color, but I'm using white so I can show off some of the combine options. I believe that it can be any size you want; MSE will center the image properly. Try to keep it to roughly 300x300 ± 50 px in case you're running into problems.

Now we need to include the picture inside the watermarks documents.

In watermark-names we'll add:

choice:
	name: custom list
	choice: meep

You can put whatever you want for choice. Just make sure to be consistent when we're defining keys.
Extra
Those of you who have already read my tutorial will realize that this is simply a standard choice field definition (placed in your game file). From what I understand, MSE will simply take this include file and replace the line include file: x in the magic.mse-game's game file with the include file. Your intuition is correct!

Then we'll assign the key "custom list" the path to your image (in watermarks). Make sure that this matches what you put in your watermark-names. If it doesn't match it exactly, MSE will not recognize the styling for this field.

	custom list meep: /magic-watermarks.mse-include/meep.png

(the indent is important)
Extra
Note that we have to include the path to the watermark because a file is going to include the folder. It's not going to realize that your watermark isn't in its folder unless you tell it.

If you've done it correctly, MSE won't print any errors in the console (F10 to check). When you go to the watermarks menu, your new choice should appear.

You're done!

Combine Style
Let's say you didn't want a fully opaque watermark. What do you do?

I'll introduce you to the world of image-returning functions. (If you don't know what a function is, try going here.

The "key" is that when you're mapping the key to an image, MSE will accept a script: line. We can put any function here as long as it returns an image, such as:

Simply pass the parameters outlined in each of the functions' documentation:
custom list meep: script: set_alpha("/magic-watermarks.mse-include/meep.png", alpha: 0.5)

This gives me my mosaic meep at half opacity.

The other functions are fairly straightforward (recolor_image() might need some tweaking), but set_combine requires knowledge of how each combine mode works. Luckily for you GIMP/PhotoShop users, MSE's formulas for combining are largely the same (except for shadow, which seems to be a sort of anti-overlay).

To give a watermark that looks like MtG's, you'll need a white watermark like mine, and then set the combine to shadow:

custom list meep: script: set_combine("/magic-watermarks.mse-include/meep.png", combine: "shadow")

I followed your guide and I failed. I can't seem to find my mistake. Can you help?

I went to google and searched for "circle" and found the first image which I used for testing.

I went to the magic-watermarks.mse-include folder and opened watermark-names and after all the other text I added (in the bottom)

choice:
name: custom list
choice: circle

Then I went into the watermarks file and added (in the bottom)

custom list circle: /magic-watermarks.mse-include/circle.png

And then I close all programs and opens a new MSE file. It shows me the option to go for a custom list watermark but it has no picture and the Console keeps beeping with an error on line 75.

Have you seen it before? Can you help me?

You've got a tab or something wrong - there's no way to tell where without your code excerpts being in code tags.

I figured it out. I opened watermark-names and watermarks in Word. I should have opened them in some text file instead. It looked way different A happy smile
Thx all!

Ah, yes. All of MSE's text-based template files must be in UTF-8 format. A happy smile

I would like to suggest that we all post code examples like this:

choice:
[TAB]name: custom list
[TAB]choce: meep

to avoid confusion.

p.s. Does anyone know why the <code> tags wouldn't work?

Fri, 2012-07-27 15:40

Pichoro's picture

kjoppy and I were talking about this by PM, but personally, I would suggest keeping the code tag examples green_meep has, as they show the user what it should look like, and are copy/pastable.

All BBCode tags require square brackets, like [code]. HTML tags use arrows, like <code>.

Also, green_meep - something I just noticed. I wanted to confirm that you are right, MSE will accept images of any size as watermarks, and center them in the box. It will also scale them up if they are too small, which is both good and bad...

Will spaces work as well as tabs? If not then just showing whitespace can be confusing.

No, spaces don't work. I just think that "[TAB]" is less useful to the user than showing them what should actually be there. Notice green_meep warns about how "indentation" is important.

I was following your watermark tutorial to try and add watermarks to my cards, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get them to show up on the cards. My input in watermark-names seems to be correct since I see the options, but the images themselves aren't showing up at all. All of the images I want to use are black on transparency while (from looking at the other watermark files) the included watermarks are partly white. Could this be a potential problem?

If it would be helpful, this is a sample image of the kind I am using. (Someone else's image that I'm using, anyway.) http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=16663203

No, the image should be fine. Must be an error in the watermarks file. Copy and paste what you have for both files, in code tags.

In watermark-names

choice:
	name: Kamen Rider
	choice: Abyss
	choice: Accel

In watermark (at the end of the file under the set symbol code)

	custom list Abyss: /magic-watermarks.mse-include/Abyss.png
	custom list Accel: /magic-watermarks.mse-include/Accel.png

Mon, 2012-08-06 17:31
Pichoro
Pichoro's picture

There we go. First, change everything in watermark-names to lowercase. Then change watermarks to this:

	kamen rider abyss: /magic-watermarks.mse-include/abyss.png
	kamen rider accel: /magic-watermarks.mse-include/accel.png

And then, make the filenames lowercase too.

Always lowercase because sometimes MSE has issues with capitals, and so do some operating systems.

Oh, okay! I forgot that the custom list is just a name-holder. Everything works now. Thanks a lot! Big smile

EDIT: So how do watermarks like the Mirran/Phyrexian symbols color correctly on different cards? Is it just a matter of transparency?

Mon, 2012-08-06 18:57
Pichoro
Pichoro's picture

No, those images are made differently than just flat black with transparency. I mean, look at them in folder - they're visible there.

Mon, 2012-08-06 19:04
Draiken

I have. I shifted my images from black to white and made them partly transparent and used gimp to compare the transparency the Gruul and Izzet symbols in the folder. I included a drop shadow as well. I just didn't know if there was some other property to the images that allow them to shade differently on different colored cards that I could incorporate on gimp to get a similar effect.

Generally if they "shade" differently, it's because they're partly transparent. Alternatively, they could be using the combine mode "overlay" on GIMP.

Try saving them to a place you know you have access to, like your desktop, then copying them to where they should be.

Wed, 2013-03-06 14:18

I've done that. When I save the edited file, it's saved as a .txt file, even though I'm saving it as UTF-8 encoding format. Then, when I swap the original file (which is simply "Type: File"), MSE doesn't even open. I click "Load recent set" or "New Set" and the window just stares at me.

Wed, 2013-03-06 14:26

There's a setting for your computer where you can see file extensions in the file names. I don't quite remember how to do it, but once you can see them, you can manually edit the file extension when you rename the file to get it to whatever type it should be.

EDIT: This link should help you out. http://www.mediacollege.com/microsoft/windows/extension-change.html

Notepad saves as .txt by default. Try using Wordpad, or if that doesn't work, Notepad++ or Gedit.

I know that it saves as a .txt by default, but that can be edited to whatever file type is used in MSE through the method I linked to above.

I'm trying to make watermarks from a different set's .mse-symbol file. The set symbol watermark uses something like the inverted common variation, so creating an image from the symbol editor doesn't quite give me the right thing. I'm hoping there's a way to use a symbol other than set.symbol in the symbol_variation() function to sidestep a lot of image manipulation, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of documentation on using files this way.

symbol_variation(symbol: "/path/to/other_symbol.mse-symbol", variation:"watermark") tries to use that string as a symbol and gets confused when it inevitably doesn't have any of the associated fields, and using input: or removing the quotes throws errors.

Tue, 2013-07-16 01:59
Pichoro
Pichoro's picture

This should be possible, I've done it (sort of) in magic-vs.

The obvious answer is if trying to do a path like that isn't working, just put the symbol file into the watermarks folder and call it directly, like:

symbol_variation(symbol: "filename.mse-symbol", variation:"watermark")

Tue, 2013-07-16 03:36
hellotheresir

Unfortunately, MSE-Script also seems to want to interpret that as a string, or at least still needs border radius and the variable 'fill' (not fill type or fill color, just fill) defined if those somehow aren't for a saved .mse-symbol.

Tue, 2013-07-16 04:59
Pichoro
Pichoro's picture

Bizarre. That should work, as this works:

			common:
				script:
					symbol_variation(
						symbol: "c.mse-symbol",
						border_radius: 0.10,
						fill_type: "solid",
						border_color: rgb(255,255,255),
						fill_color: rgb(0,0,0)
					)

That... does indeed work. I'm confused but grateful.

I have followed the instructions you have posted here. I have re sized my images to 300x300 give or take. I have edited the two files (watermarks and watermark-names) and replaced them. When i pull up Magic set editor and try to add a watermark it shows mine in the list of watermarks but no image shows in the menu and when I select mine nothing shows. No error or anything. i can select any other watermark with no issues too.

What is your "problem" with the watermarks?

If it's of any worth, you misspelled "watermark_lightning.png" wrong, unless that was intentional.

It doesn't appear in the watermarks list at all. I fixed the misspell, but it still doesn't seem to affect it.

What style are you looking at? Because this won't add watermarks to magic-new-extra.

I was originally looking at the Futureshifted, but then when it didn't work I looked at modern.
I do now have a question, though. When this manages to work, if I do the same thing in magic-watermarks-extra.mse-include, will it add them to the magic-new-extra template?

Probably.

Any errors?

Also try putting your choice before the set symbol one in your watermarks file.

It actually is before the set symbol in my file.

No, it's not.

It's fixed in my current version, sorry.

Alright. And there's no errors in the console? Are you sure you are editing the correct files?
