Hello everyone,
I'm still new here, but I am hoping to hone my skills on creating and reviewing cards. I don't play Magic as much as some of you and when I do I am extremely, extremely casual. I currently play Paupers (all commons), Peasant (5 Uncommons, 55 Commons), Peasant EDH (Any uncommon as your general, 7 other uncommons, and 92 commons), and a custom format I created called Archive (250 cards minimum, singleton, 20 of each color minimum, 100 lands minimum), but I have been really involved in my local Paupers/Peasant community and one of the things we are hoping to do is create our own cards to use and later on a custom set we will draft. So I am hoping this will help me make better balanced cards.

Description==

A. Once a week a challenge will be posted.
B. You may post as many cards as you wish that meet the challenge, but only one can be submitted. All other cards not submitted should be put into a spoiler.
C. Submit cards as text only. Card images and any other additional information should be put into a spoiler.
D. At the end of each week all submitted cards will be rated by the previous winner and the new winner will submit the next challenge.

Rules==

1. Any bashing, trolling, or critiquing of any entry will result in disqualification.
2. Multiple posting (double, triple, etc) will result in disqualification. Please use the edit button.
3. Pestering a judge either in the topic, by private message, or any other means may result in your disqualification from the round under the current judges discretion.

I am sure you will ALL stick to these rules, but I just wanted to make sure I had these written down as a reference.

CHALLENGE #1==
Dark Ascension gave us four uncommon 'lords' for Zombies (U/B), Spirits (W/U), Werewolves/Wolves (R/G), and Vampires (R/B). Your job is to make the Human (W/G) lord. The card should follow the line of all the above listed lords and be uncommon.

This challenge will end on Monday, March 12th. Good luck.

@Sewn - Yeah, it gets confusing since they both sound alike, but Paupers is all common and Peasant allows up to 5 uncommons. So I want this game to go both ways. Present a challenge and then set the rarity at either common or uncommon. So no rares or mythics should be here; all I do with my rares and mythics is sell them to buy more commons and uncommons anyway Stick out your tongue

An interesting take on a lord. He gives the standard +1/+1 to his kind and he gets bigger when non-humans start dying. You really don't even need to use other humans with this guy just as long as you have non-humans to sac or are killing other non-humans.

Simple enough. The lifelink in combination with +1/+1 is rather deadly. This guy would stand toe-to-toe with the Spirit lord from DA as one of the best in the cycle. Very good entry and fits in with the existing cycle.

Another interesting take. He doesn't really "lord" over other humans so much as want them to die. Not very human like and it doesn't feel like a G/W creature. I like the idea of it and you could totally make this work, but it just doesn't hit the mark.

While you wished to remove this from the running, I really liked where you were going. The ability may be from a red source, but I can see the justification of it being white. I would have personally limited it to 'non-humans' who are killed by your other human creatures. Like they are 'banishing' the evil away so it can't come back. Even though you didn't like it, I did.

"At the break of day, they shall fall, just as we shall rise."

The built in Spare from Evil on the lord is very nice, the vigilance fits nicely, and the standard +1/+1 is what I expect to see on a lord. Another great entry and I really like it.

First of all, thank you to everyone who entered. It means a lot to me and I hope this starts to pick up becomes more active. I loved every entry, but there can be only one winner.

And yes, 2/1 would propably have been fine, I was thinking about exactly this longer than the rest of the card and in the end decided to play safe^^

OK, now to the next challenge..:

In M12, wizards created a circle for each of the five featured planeswalkers of the set. Like for example Jace, Memory Adept, Jace's Archivist and Jace's Erasure each of these five circles had a mythic (the planeswalker, obviously), a rare and a common - but no uncommon! So, you are going to fix this.. Create an uncommon fitting in the cycle of one of the five plainswalkers!

I desinged this to work well in conjunction with Garruk's Companion, as attacking with a 5/4 turn 3 is powerful. Giving large creatures the power to go over the top i something I feel is green, and affecting things with trample works for me to define size. Slight inspiration from Tanglesap.

OK, my first time to judge, so let's see... First of all, there were seven entries divided as follows:
Gideon: 3
Jace: 0
Sorin: 2
Chandra: 1
Garruk: 1
So, no love for Jace Winking smiley Anyway, let's have a look at the individual cards..

Zuty
Gideon's Decree White mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Enchantment Blue mana symbol
Whenever a non-token creature you control dies, you may pay White mana symbol. If you do, put a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token onto the battlefield.

I really like this card. Non-token wording and mana requirement are very important and make the card fine for CMC2.. Nethertheless I think for limited purpurses alone this card should propably be rare and not uncommon.. Also I don't think this card would really belong in the Gideon-cycle.. When I think about Planeswalkers and soldiers, my first thought is Elspeth – and not Gideon (although Gideon's Lawkeeper and Gideon's Avenger are soldiers, I know).. It becomes obviously when you remember that tapping and caring about opponents tapped creatures is Gideon's mechanical identity in M12 – which is nowhere seen on this card.. So in the end it's a cool card in a vacuum, but it doesn't fit in the challenge..

Inanimate
Chandra's Destruction 1 mana symbolRed mana symbolRed mana symbol
Sorcery Blue mana symbol
Chandra's Destruction deals 3 damage to each creature and each player.
"If anything burns, everything burns. You have to admit, my creed has ambition."

Oh yes, burning everything down really feels perfectly like Chandra, just like you said in your comments.. You also already mentined Pyroclasm and Volcanic Fallout, althoug my first thought was Slagstorm, which is a rare but let's you choose what you want to burn down.. Long time ago this effenct once was worth five mana (Dakmor Plague and Famine) but nowadays should be much cheaper.. Sulfurous Blast costs one additional mana but you can play it as an instant – so in the end I think unlike my first impulse the combination of CMC3 and uncommon is actually propably fine nowadays.. So, a cool card also fitting Chandra's "I burn you down with my instants an sorcerys" theme – the only thing I don't totally like is that Chandra has more of an aggro feeling but Chandra's destruction also burns down your own team..

doc_T
Gideon's Law White mana symbol
Enchantment Blue mana symbol
Each other player may only untap X-1 creatures during their upkeep, where X is the number of creatures that player controls.
"My rule shall let them be awestruck!" - Gideon Jura

OK, out of all three Gideon-related entries this one fit's Gideon's theme the most. What I don't really like is that if your opponent simply plays another creature after attacking you with the others, Gideon's Law doesn't really do much.. I think it would be better if it would allow only untapping X-1 creatures, where X is the number of untapped creatures that player controls..

jolykj
Sorin's Bloodfiend 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol

Lifelink
Whenever you gain life put a +1/+1 counter on Sorin's Bloodfiend.
Whenever an opponent lose life put a +1/+1 counter on Sorin's Bloodfiend.
1/1

Oh good, I was hoping for a creature to fill the empty spot in Sorin's cycle. My first thought while reading this entry was.. Why is it a horror..? Really why not a vampire..? The abilities make perfect sense for it to be one – and I don't really have to talk about how much better the Bloodfiend would flavorfully fit into the Sorin-cycle.. Ignoring that I really like your entry and the way the abilities work together and make the card mechanically fitting into the cycle. Because of the Lifelink you can expect the Bloodfiend to grow because of both of its other abilities but when using Sorin's thirst or Sorin's Vengeance (or Sorin himself, of course) it becomes really good. I'm not too sure if maybe too good, since each use of any of these three cards or simply attacking and dealing combat damage with the Bloodfiend give it a permanent +2/+2 bonus, but regarding the other newest uncommons and the fact that it starts as a simple 1/1, it's propably fine.. So in the end, if this card would simply have been a vampire, it could propably have won the challenge for a perfect fit into the existing cycle..

Kagerowrs

“Is there is any reason why should I let you waste precious time of my lord? No? Then die.”

OK, the second Sorin-related entry and again a creature. And even a vampire – very good.. Sadly, although the flavortext makes me understand the idea behind the card, it doesn't really fit into Sorin's cycle the way Sorin's Bloodfiend would do and has no interaction with the other cards.. Also, I think looking at Child of Night (even from M12) on the one side and Fume Spitter on the other side I think Sorin's Servant would have been perfectly fine at common..

Sewn-Eye
Gideon's Riposte 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Instant Blue mana symbol
Gideon's Riposte deals X damage divided as you choose among any number of target attacking creatures, where X is the number of creatures attacking you or a Planeswalker you control.

OK, the third Gideon entry.. It's definatly an interesting version of attacker-killing instants and I think that in your final version the combination of mana cost and damage dividing is pretty accurate.. Sadly, this card doesn't really feel Gideon-related too.. It's not like with Gideon's Decree that I would immediately think about another Planeswalker when looking at Gideon's Riposte, but it doesn't really feel being related to him too..

pang4
Garruk's Chant 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Enchantment Blue mana symbol
Creatures with trample you control get +2/+2.
"Strength to the strong.
Might to the mighty.
Power to the powerful.
Death to the doomed."

So, at least a card for the Garruk cycle – and not a creature, very nice. The first question that came to my mind was – is this an uncommon? OK, unconditional Anthem-effects are rare, but conditional ones have quite gasp in rarities.. Intangible Virtue is uncommon with CMC2 and a +1/+1 with upside bonus, Tempered Steel is a rare with CMC3 and the simple +2/+2 bonus.. In the end, uncommon is propably fine, so what about the card itself..? I must say, I really like the idea behind the card – normally I'm a bit torn with these "making big things even bigger" effects, since they often become quite uselless or to overwhelming but none of these concerns are a problem here. Trample makes the bonus matter, even if the creatures are blocked and since it's "only" +2/+2 the bonus doesn't make single creatures feel unstoppable.. Also nice on curve with Garruk's Companion (like you already mentioned) and definatly fitting in the rest of the cycle, since all of Garruks followers are trampling beasts.. Only the beast tokens of the Planeswalker itself are left out, sadly.. You could have included them by using the beast creature type as condition instead of trample, but this feels less narrow on the other hand and would propably have kicked the card out of uncommon..

And the winner is...
In the end, this was really hard.. The winner is pang4 with Garruk's Chant – close, aweful close runner-up is jolykj with Sorin's Bloodfiend (not being a vampire only is a small, but so very important detail..).

I am... slightly confused. Aren't the uncommon Planeswalker "signature" spells supposed to directly synergize with their one of their + loyalty abilities? Liliana's Caress loves Liliana Vess's +1 discard, and Chandra's Spitfire loves Chandra Nalaar's +1 ping target player, for example.

Oh well, congratz to pang4. Love the card.

Here we go....

So, M10-12 had a cycle of uncommon Color-hosers (Celestial Purge, Flashfreeze, Deathmark, Combust and Autumn's Veil) which were fine and all, but now I want new ones. So:

Design an uncommon, noncreature card that hoses it's two enemy colors.
The card should be able to fit in a core set.

I will judge based on balance, multi-format use and flavor. Let's do this ^^

Furthermore, I believe Carthage should be destroyed.

Target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a green or white card from it. That player discards that card.

If Akroma had followers in white, why not have them in red for her planeshifted version? Makes for an interesting storyline ... Goblins following an angel ...
