Story
Teng Na-Let rushed eagerly into the chamber. She'd sent the others on ahead above, keeping mum about the underground entrance she'd discovered. If she could get to the treasure before the others, it would all be hers. She had no doubt she could make it in and out before the rest of the group got their bearings. There were sure to be traps, and the others were hardly competent. A shell-shocked elf, brainless orc, and two goblins. Goblins! To call them impedimental toads would be to insult the toads. It was a wonder they'd made it this far, losing only the dwarf. The elf's friend. What was his name? Henlim...Hartric...something with an 'H'. Anyway, back to business.

She strode in measured, even steps down the crumbling tunnel underneath the ruined tomb of Samarc the Seeker. She reached out with her mind, feeling along the labyrinthine pathways ahead in the darkness. If she couldn't see the entire tunnel system in her mind, she might have been lost in these catacombs forever. But she could sense an anomaly, the only room in the subterranean network. Just a couple of tunnels down. Piece of pie.

Pie. That was the first thing she'd buy with the money from her treasure. And of course, if she had pie, she'd need a plate to put it on. And a table to put the plate on. And then she'd need a room for the table, and a house to hold the room. Maybe out in the countryside, one of the outer islands where nobody ever ventured. Nice and peaceful. No one would bother her again. Until she got bored. She would eventually; she always did after she tried to enjoy the spoils of a job.

Speaking of. She was finally at the door to the only room in this place. It was indistinguishable from the walls of the tunnel. The only way she knew it was a door was because she could sense the invisible cracks in the wall, and the hollowness on the other side. This was it. She focused on the door, felling carefully for any catches that might trigger a trap. A few long minutes of tentative probing, and there they were. Both the latch to open the door, and the cave-in that would trigger above her head when it did.

Slowly, ever so slowly, she reached out to the trap mechanism and tugged at it with her mind. Eventually she disjointed the mechanism, allowing her to open the door safely.

Ha! No simple stone trap could take her unaware. She stepped into the room, which was, strangely, lit. It took a minute for her eyes to adjust, and then she saw that the soft yet permeating light was emanating from marble sphere mounted on a fountain. Probably just a lighting orb whose magic had persisted through the centuries. Ancient Cordan magic was known for its resiliency, after all. The fountain was in the center of the small room, and the walls were lined with elegant columns. Between each pair of columns stood various man-sized stone figures--some hooded, and one a king with crown and finery. From the ceiling hung two chandeliers, but they provided no light; instead, their dangling shards of crystal reflected the light from the orb, bouncing it all over the room.

Teng felt at the orb with her stone magic, careful to pull back if anything felt wrong. But she didn't feel anything at all. It was as if the stone just...wasn't there. She tried again, and again, but no results. She absentmindedly reached a hand toward the sphere, but stopped at the last moment. What was she doing? Don't touch it. It could be anything. She closed her eyes and shook her head to clear her mind. When she opened her eyes again, she noticed the golden gate at the other end of the room. Right. She remembered feeling that exit earlier, before she got confused...the others! She'd forgotten the rest of the part was coming from above. How much time had she wasted here, staring at this orb? She couldn't remember. It could have been a few seconds or a few hours.

Using what little clarity of thought she had recovered, she pulled herself away from the fountain with its glowing orb, and forced her feet onward to the gate. She'd need to open it. She put her hands on the cold bars of the gate and gripped tightly, afraid she would otherwise turn back to the fountain.

Suddenly her vision started to grow dim, her reflected features growing hazy in the shiny golden gate. She spun around to where the orb had been. She screamed and cringed backwards against the gate. The orb was no longer on the fountain. It was right in front of her, floating next to her face. And what had been a soft white light had now turned to a dark, dark purple. The orb buzzed with electricity, and the last thing Teng saw was her own warped face grinning back at her from the glassy orb.

Render

I didn't want to just slap the Legendary supertype on to fulfill the requirement, so I designed the card to make sense with it. It would be rather strong to have more than one of these out at the same time, both accumulating counters from the same creature attacks. So the legendary rule keeps it from being abused in that way.

Wait, what?? Frustrated

  • Step 1: Write a judging.
  • Step 2: ….....
  • Step 3: Return a few days later realizing you've forgotten to post your thoughts.
Feeling so stupid now A sad 'frowny' Thankfully I had not already deleated my file, so here you go (for real this time A happy smile ):

OK guys, let's take a look at your entries, shall we? First of all, those were your given limits:

LIMIT #5: Your super-card has a supertype!
LIMIT #116: I demand trial by combat! Your card has an ability that activates in the Combat step, or can only be cast in the combat step. (Thanks, pang4!)
LIMIT #156: Don't be so negative: Your card features a minus! (Thanks, Daij_Djan!)

And now, it's time for some comments:

fluffyDeathbringer
First of all, I have to say Emerge looks like a very interesting concept – Flash, Morph and maybe Traps (?) have really given birth to something pretty cool looking here A happy smile Some might complain about Emerge dodging all counterspells easily, but I think this would only be a minor issue. That aise, I like Arctic Ambusher quite much. I've been pondering about the costs a little bit, yet considering you could block an attacker for dealing an additional damage on top the Last Gasp-effect, I think costs and rarity are just fine the way they are.

Solir
Since I am German, I first of all really have to agree with you concering Kriegheim, Home of Warriors' name That aside, I like the card's clean and nicely mirrored effect, even though I'm slightly concerned about it's power level – we are talking about a repetative, uncounterable effect here after all.. When comparing it to Quicksand and Desert the added cost might indeed balance it out nicely but I think I'd need some heavy playtesting to really evaluate this card.

thehuw
Drift Hellion totally feels like Skred's new best friend, seriously Big smile Since Char-Rumbler has always made me smile, I really like this card and it's balancing actually seems to be quite solid – even though it's obviously a cheap and powerful lategame bomb. Only nitpick: Whithout any given render, the concept of a snowy Hellion feels a little weird for me Winking smiley

Temata38
I've been thinking about Blizzardsoul Entreater for quite some time now, and I still can't decide whether I'd prefer it as blue-red card. I know Myriad, yet outside of that mechanic hasty one-turn tokens normally fall into red's playground. That aside, I have one minor wording issue: Altered copies normally use an except-wording. My final verdict: Change the cost to 4 mana symbolBlue mana symbolRed mana symbol (nice color balance for the color balanced abilities), correct the wording, and you have a perfect card!

yoshi2001
This sure looks like one cramped typeline – does Hand of the Freeze really need to be a Human as well? That aside, I really like the concept behind this card, een though I have two issues with it. First of all, the ability should be slightly reworded (into one paragraph) to really keep „freezing“ when your card leaves the battlefield. Second I'm not sure if this really plays as cool as it looks when it's able to hit lands as well. Might be completely wrong about this, though.

Marzen64
Have to say, I'm quite unsure about the Ambassador supertype. Only have this one card as reference now, but does it really fulfill a purpurse? I get the design space you're dwelling in (and I like it!), but it doesn't feel like a new supertype without any mechanical background would be required for it. Why no subtype instead? Technically as supertype you could add it to noncreatures as well – yet the name feels unfitting for this kind of utilisation anyway.. Concerning Frostwall Ambassador itself now.. it sure feels like one massive standstill as it's ability pretty much makes any creature combat completely irrelevant (outside of you using evasive guys). I seriously doubt this playing nicely in any way, sorry. Laughed at the flavor text, though Winking smiley

ThisisSakon
A common! A happy smile Especially within this contest and it's sometimes completely crazy combinations of limits, entering commons always intrigues me. And I have to say, I really like your Blizzard Sentinel quite much. Impose looks like one of those apparently weak and boring mechanics that play out quite nicely nethertheless (Exalted say hi A happy smile ) and all numbers seem to fit perfectly here. I just can't decide whether I like your snowy Elemental better as colorless as it is now or if I'd prefer it being granted a (most likely blue) color through color indicator..

Fermat
No idea why, but Curse of Death's Hold-like effects always make me smile A happy smile Have to say, this indeed also implied to Oldoss, Enfeebler Eminent. Balancing the card by locking the ability behind Renown is a clever move and I like the already added evasion in form of Menace. My only nitpick: Why is this card blue? It feels as black as it could get for my tastes – and while I understand things like this happening from time to time when cycles are involved, it's a little weird on a card seen here in a vacuum like this.

MrShinyObject
Viran, the Expanding Root sure looks like one scary multiplayer card, seriously Winking smiley Actually I wonder at which part this could get out of hand too quickly, but at its current four mana cost and all plants keeping 0/4 stats I'd say it should still be fine. Otherwise maybe add a small cost to the token creation? A mere 1 mana symbol would already make a huge difference after all.. The activated ability might offer repetitive removal, yet given the number restriction as well as the colorheavy off-color cost, it should definitely be fine. And it really work well with the flavor text A happy smile

Flo00
When I first read your entry, I gave it a mental nod and then simply moved on. Now that I'm trying to write a comment about it, I have to say this is actually a little difficult for me – as I simply really, really like Zcrec, the Implosionator. The symmetry of its two possible modes looks perfect for me as do the basic 2/3 stats for three mana in comparison. Have to admit however: Playtesting might reveal this card being undercosted by 1 mana symbol. Nothing else to say here!

Convex Frost Fire
Wall of Glare, while never having played well for me, always has kept a soft spot in my hearth - and Djang Hai, the Great Wall looks like one interesting upgrade. But then again.. I'm not sure. I can't really put it into words (sorry A sad 'frowny' ), but to me it feels as if a legendary, five mana rare should offer something more than basically being one massive, repetitive Fog – though as I write this I actually have to wonder if this would even play nice just because of that comparison..? Finally it definitely feels like the triggered ability should be changed to granting your wall +0/+X based on the number of blocked creatures instead (plays out nearly identically outside of a few specific mechanics) since it currently looks pretty blue (I realize the card then however wouldn't fit the challenge anymore).

monger
Dynamic is an interesting idea to make split-card permanents work – whether you're using flip or double faced cards for this doesn't really matter gamewise (even though there are pros and cons outside of this, yet that doesn't matter here Winking smiley ). Sporeridden Shambler/Sporesail Blight in particular now looks pretty nice as well – I really like how both cards are different yet still similar. I makes me wonder though: Are Dynamic cards supposed to always have one cost applying for both „halves“? I'm asking now because while Sporeridden Shambler's cost pretty much feels as pushed as it could go without changing its stats whereas Sporesail Blight feels like it could end up at 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbol as well. Don't get me wrong: I know cards don't always get as pushed as possible for good reasons (especially when they offer additional possibilities like this card), yet it feels slightly awkward when such a card is pushed asymmetrically..

grishnax
First of all I have to admit, the concept of snow instants/sorceries interests me for quite some time now. That aside, I really like Crippling Rimewinds – outside of the costing debate don't really have to add anything else Winking smiley Now for that debate, though: I like it's current White mana symbolBlack/red mana symbol cost best. White traditionally is the color to mess with attackers (red might go there sometimes as well, yet much less frequently than white) whereas black/red add Wither (once white, once blue, 15 times black, 12 times red, 10 times green in the past) to the mix.

Ishmael
First of all: Nice story Big smile Really like how you took the legendary supertype into mind while designing Samarc's Orb of Malady, and I agree it balances out the card quite fine. I have one wording question, though: Why removing X counters when you exile the card itself as part of the effect anyway? Wouldn't a “ remove all“-wording be simpler?Actually, why even bother removing the counters in the first place?

Fourteen entries, wow. And quite a few pretty good ones on top – this'll be a difficult decision:

And the winner is
Flo00 !

There were actually quite a few entries I considered declaring the winner here. But when you fall in love with a card, you can hardly get rid of that love afterwards, right? Winking smiley Runner-up without a specific order goes to ThisisSakon and Fermat!

And these are the new random limits:

Designed to work with Omnath, Locus of Rage. Green doesn't deal with untapping much in general, but I think that untapping like this is fine; see Nettle Sentinel for something similar. The reason this is at Uncommon is because in limited, it would be frustrating to see a lot of these going around, and it needs a certain kind of deck (one with Elementals) to shine.

Little feedback for some of you:

@Solir: How about "It becomes a 0/0 Ally creature ..."

@Ishmael: I've seen this art used so many times now...
Dormant Gomazoa (or Deep-Slumber Titan) enter the battlefield tapped and there are cards like Colossus of Sardia, that have much higher cost to untap. Since you need to process to untap, your card is somewhere in between those two. I guess your card or the untap shoud cost at least 1 mana symbol or 2 mana symbol more.

@fluffy: Thrull tribal, nice Orzhov flavour A happy smile

"Oh sweetness of death! I welcome thee once more that I may bring strength to my clan!"

Explanations
So, the limits.
First of all, this creature doesn't untap. Like, ever. It's not here to rumble, it's here to die. A lot.

Second, it's a companion to Meren of Clan Nel Toth, if that wasn't obvious.

The final limit is where you might criticize me, as it apparently doesn't care about a tribe. But I chose to interpret this limit in the flavour rather than mechanically. Clan Nel Toth is a clan that relies on it's death magics, sacrifice, and revival. Here is a character that freely allows itself to die, over and over, in order to save the clan.

It's costed to come out the turn before Meren, and then sacrifice itself to save her, giving you an experience counter to boot.

Furthermore, I believe Carthage should be destroyed.

It's crazy enough to look like it comes from the same place as Arjun. Sphinx hate is also a fun thing. Surely fun in multiplayer.
I think the p/t is a bit too high for that effect.
And in the forum is allways enough space for a flyvour text, even though there isn't on the render Winking smiley

I like it. It doesn't do much on its own but in the right deck it sure can win you the game.

It's a nice explanation to work around the tribal, it still looks like you cheated a little. At least you cheated with class. It's kind of weird, a creature that just doesn't work like a creature. It has a kind of Vigean Hydropon feeling.
I think it should say "Regenerate another target creature." In the last years, Wizards words the cards in a way that the sacrifice makes sense (e.g. no sacrificing for effects on the creature itself).

The first two limits make this really tough, as options to cast at instant speed have been worded as "as though it had flash," and we're not supposed to use keywords.

@Neo: How would you know that Cerebral Hydromorph would be in the cards you're going to look at without looking at them? What I mean is, you don't need the word instead Winking smiley

@Neo: Also it shouldn't start with whenever but with If or As. With whenever it's a triggered ability and when it resolves, you won't be looking that those cards anymore. (For examples see Aven Mindcensor or Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar.)

If Leyline of the Stitcher is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it on the battlefield.
At the beginning of your upkeep, put the top card of your library in your graveyard.

I don't know if this fulfills the challenge of "instant speed", but the beginning of the game definitely isn't sorcery speed Big smile

I'd argue it doesn't. Besides, you kinda forgot to include "is in your opening hand". Otherwise it doesn't really make sense.
