Fallen Empires Resurrected

silent cacophony

I've recently undertaken a challenge to take the Fallen Empires set and make it into a good balanced set by modern standards. I'm not under any kind of time limit, and I'd like to try to make the majority of cards actually be just updates of the original cards. The obviously good cards are going to be kept the same: High Tide, Hymn to Tourach, Goblin Gernade. Creature types will be updated (aka the Orcs will all become goblins for example.) So far what I've done is turn 4 characters from the story line into planeswalkers. Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

"Here's my current build on the planswalkers:
The Hand of Justice - WWW, 3 loyalty
+1: White creatures gain protection from black, from red, from green and from blue until end of turn.
-3: Exile target non-white creature.; Destroy all non-white creatures.

Galina, Goddess of the Sea - 3UU, 4 loyalty
+2: Target land becomes an island in addition to its other types.
-X: Gain control of target creature with converted mana cost X or less.
-8; You get an emblem with "Whenever you tap an island for mana, add U to your mana pool.

Tourach, Dark Lord - 2BB, 4 loyalty
+2: Each player puts a 0/1 black Thrull creature token onto the battlefield.
-3: Target player discards two cards at random.
-8: Each player sacrifices all Thrulls. Put an X/X black Demon creature token with flying onto the battlefield, where X is the number of Thrulls sacrificed this way.

Thelon, Master Grower - 2GG, 4 loyalty
+1: Put 2 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield.
+1: Sacrifice a Saproling, then put a spore counter on each creature you control.
-7: You get an emblem with "Creatures you control get +1/+1 for each spore counter on them."

If this is just your project, then this needs to be moved to card showcase.

I'm actually doing something similar with Homelands as a sideproject... I haven't worked on it for quite some time through. What I did differentely was, that I used all of the original names, and remade the cards. I wrote all the following before I actually noticed you did it in a different way, lol... Anyways, those tips also works for a lot of other sets, so I'll leave them be.

First, how many cards of each rarity is there in the original set? Homelands contained 46 commons, 27 uncommons and 42 rares (115 total). Then fit it in how you like with your own set: I put 45 commons, 33 uncommons, 37 rares.
Next, find out how many cards each color should have with each rarity. I put:
8 Commons of each color, 5 common artifacts (=45)
5 Uncommons of each color, a cycle of uncommon lands, 3 uncommon artifacts (=33)
7 Rares of each color, 2 rare artifacts (=37)
This should severely improve the balance of the set.

Next is the card types. I made it like this:
60 creatures (Creatures are important. You want lots.)
15 enchantments
15 instants
10 sorceries
5 lands

This adds up to 105. Add the 10 artifacts, and we got the full 115 cards.
12 Creatures for each color
3 Enchantments for each color
3 Instants for each color
2 Sorceries for each color

Additionally, 3 of the creatures for each color is legendary, and 1 of the enchantments for each color is a world enchantment.

Here comes the hard challenge. You have to fill in every card. Homelands only included 3 world enchantments, for example, so I had to convert 2 other cards to worlds - I went with Dark Maze and Hungry Mist, because the names matched, and they had some possibilities for enchantments. However, you will have to degrade some cards in rarity, and update some etc, which will likely be a little hard when you have to fit everything in the right colors.[/card]

I know some of this was a little out of topic, since I got caught up in writing it before I realized you did things in a different way with your set... Well, good luck nevertheless!

Very interesting idea. Some friends of mine are remaking 4th Edition, with modern updates, and then plan on drafting it somehow. Good luck. I've heard a lot about Homelands remakes, but not Fallen Empires. I suppose all of the art copies will actually allow you to generate more cards than in the original set, with a huge tribal theme, since you're going to be loaded with goblin, merfolk, etc. art.

Fallen Empires was great!

May I recommend, however, that instead of just copying it, what if you made a "lost expansion" to it, kinda of like Coldsnap? "Shades of the Empires" or something. "Fallen Dreams". That way, you can reprint existing cards, but also make new ones.

If you need help with thallid or thrull cards, count me in!

Here's a quicky, based off of Verdant Force:

Thallisaur - 5 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Creature - Fungus Red mana symbol
At the beginning of each upkeep, put three spore counters on Thallisaur.
Remove three spore counters from Thallisaur: Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield.

(on his own, no much, but paired with Thelon of Havenwood, he's siiiiiiiiick.)

Not a big fan of turning orcs to goblins. Orcs were fun! At the very least, make them Hobgoblins (so they have the goblin suptype, but a beefier look / theme to them).

And don't go too heavy with the merfolk- Empires was all about Homarids (which, I'm sure, can be made less suck-tastic.)

Another one:

Viscerid Elder - 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Creature - Homarid Shaman Blue mana symbol
Blue mana symbolTap symbol: Untap target blue creature.
X mana symbolTap symbol: Use only blue mana to pay for X mana symbol. Untap X target Homarids other than Viscerid Elder.

Another one hit me:

Thrull Den - 3 mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Cumulative upkeep Black mana symbol (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)
Whenever Thrull Den's Cumulative Upkeep is paid, put a 0/1 black Thrull token for each age counter on Thrull Den.
If you sacrifice Thrull Den, destroy all non-Thrull creatures you control.
