So far the set is coming out nicely and everyone is doing a great job on fleshing out the plane, creature the people within its borders, and creature fun and interesting cards and mechanics to work within the world.

Progress So Far
Download Set File

I have decided to move a lot of the world information and set information, as well as our future spoiler lists to a web site that I have created. I have made comments open for anyone to comment on the pages, whether it be about layout, content, or anything else.
Protaria Website

Planeswalkers to appear in Protaria:
Green mana symbolBlue mana symbol Kiora Atua, a prominent member of the Sons of Erebani and kind beast summoner.
White mana symbolBlack mana symbol Dolben Krumm, the leader of Krumm Corp and a man who is greedy beyond belief.

Planeswalkers to appear in Putrescence:
Black mana symbolRed mana symbol Koth Mutated, Mirrodin native looking for a way to fight the Phyrexians, gets corrupted by the horrors surrounding Protaria in the Blind Eternities.

Mechanics
Here is a list of the working mechanics so far. Things will change if they need to so nothing is set in stone till we are all done and finished.

Reincarnate [COST] (At the beginning of your upkeep you may [COST]. If you do, put this card from your graveyard on the bottom of its owner's library.)

Process - [COST], Exile this card from your graveyard: [EFFECT]. Put a void counter on target permanent you control. (Whenever a permanent with a void counter on it would be put into a graveyard, exile it instead. If a permanent has five or more void counters on it, sacrifice it.)

Fortifications will make an appearance under the control of the Krumm Corp. They should focus on giving an increased mana output but at the cost of other resources such as creatures, life, cards in hand/library, etc.

A Rebel mechanic will be featured for the Sons of Erebani faction. They will focus on group and surprise tactics.

Void Counters: When a permanent with a void counter on it would be put into a graveyard, exile it instead. These appear on cards that are involved with the Krumm Corp and their corruption of the planets energy.

Lands that have a major effect on the game state. These could be legendary or just have some kind of effect that is reminiscent of enchantments, or both. They will be refereed to as Major Lands for now. I think that a cycle of common, uncommon, and rare Major Lands can work out nicely.

Future Mechanics
Recycle [MANA] (Sacrifice this permanent: Add [MANA] to your mana pool.)

Aid 1 (Reveal the top card of your library. You may cast that card if it shares a creature type with this card. If you don’t put that card on the bottom of your library.)

Aid [MORE THAN 1] (Reveal the top [NUMBER] cards of your library. You may cast any number of cards revealed this way that share a creature type with this card. Put all cards you didn’t cast on the bottom of your library in any order.)

Horrors/Mutants: Creatures who come from the void will be Horrors and will be Red mana symbol. The planes flora and fauna that mutates will be Mutants and will be Red/white mana symbol, Blue/red mana symbol, Black/red mana symbol, and Red/green mana symbol.

Voidstrike (It deals damage to creatures in the form of void counters.)

You could have a mechanic that converts cards in your graveyard to something else such as mana, counters, card drawing, tokens, etc. It could be on cards themselves to use from the grave or on cards which exile cards in your grave.

Check out my updated set hub.

I like that idea. Something kind of like Flashback but with a different effect instead of casting the spell again. Such as:

Reincarnate [Cost] -- [Cost]: Exile this card from your graveyard. If you do, [do something].

or

Reincarnate [Cost] -- [Cost]: Put this card on the bottom of your library. If you do, [do something].

I like the first one of those 2.

also, maybe the lands have special abilities or something. (or a bundle of cards that make lands do stuff.)

what about Earth Mana for MTG Extra for the eco tererists?

I like the second ability, as it could combo wickedly with something like:

Enchantment Rare
You draw cards from the bottom of your library instead.

Yeah I was thinking of having lands that have abilities that have a more relevant effect on the game. Also I was thinking of having cards that care about the number of lands that you control or interact with lands in some way.

Now I don't really think we could use a new mana symbol, I just don't know what it would be used for.

Thank you both for giving me your feed back on the two options. I personally think both have their uses and maybe we could modify one a little so that it is not almost the same as the other and still use it in the set.

That is an interesting card and could have some really good combo potential with some existing cards such as Junktroller and Reito Lantern.

Are you thinking of having fortifications? I remember when it was announced that Zen block would be the land block there was a lot of chatter about fortifications "coming back."

Thu, 2011-07-14 16:07
Darkerling
Darkerling's picture

Well I was thinking about how to use Earth Mana for MTG Extra and this is a possible idea:

((Recycleing the forests)) Earth Mana for MTG ExtraGreen mana symbol
Enchantment Colorless mana symbol
(Earth Mana for MTG Extra may be paid for with 2 mana symbol mana or exiling a card with Earth Mana for MTG Extra in it’s mana cost from your graveyard.)
All forests in your graveyard have “Reincarnate: 1 — Exile this card from your graveyard, 1: Add GG to your mana pool.

I'm concerned that the second version of Reincarnate would allow looping (using it many more time then once) which would require upping the cost for the effect.

As far as fortifications, maybe fortifications give a land p/t but if it dies, and the fortification is what dies instead?

Sgmendez of Golgari
Sgmendez of Golgari's picture

I like the idea of using Fortifications.

I see what you mean with the symbol, although I am not to fond of using the Earth as the symbol. Maybe a different symbol in place of it.

Yeah I was trying to come up with ways to do both and what I came up with is:

Reincarnate [cost] (At the beginning of your upkeep you may (pay) [cost]. If you do, put this card from your graveyard on the bottom of its owner's library.)

Process — [cost], Exile this card from your graveyard: [effect].

Now the idea is that Reincarnate allows for creatures and other spell energy to return to the planet (your library) and Process is when you use that energy up and it is no longer circulating. Also with Reincarnate some cards would have effects when they get reincarnated worded like this:

When you reincarnate ~ do [effect].

But I am thinking that only certain cards will have effects like this so that it doesn't get out of hand.

I just had an idea that would work similar to the Earth mana symbol.

We could have some cards with text that reads:

Each card with reincarnate you exile from your graveyard while casting this spell reduces its cost by 1 mana symbol or by one mana of that card's color.

Kind of like convoke but different. And it is definitely a parasitic ability. Now that I have written it out it looks a lot like Delve and maybe we could just use that on some cards. Or change it a little to fit the theme better.

SoG, that's interesting, but it feels very wordy for a hard to use ability, that doesn't do much...

also don't people want to reincarnate there cards instead of exiling them (the equivalent of Process)?

Yeah, that is true. We can just leave the exiling to process.

So does anyone have any ideas for other mechanics that would be interesting in an environment like this?

Lets work on lands, then move forward, so we'll have a better idea what we'll be putting in the set.

What would be a good land ability...

how about lands that do effects under curtain conditions?

for examlpe:

((test Land card))
Land - Mountain Blue mana symbol
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
If you control 5 or more mountains then ~ has "3 mana symbol: Destroy target artifact."

or maybe

((test Land card))
Land - Mountain Blue mana symbol
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
If you control 3 or more mountains as ~ enters the battlefield, Destroy target artifact.

These aren't probably that balanced, but they show the idea.

BTW would you like me to post some of the cards that I made that used recycle?

Here are some cards I made that use recycle (back when I first designed the mechanic)
Note, I haven't changed any names, so feel free to change them and what not. It was supposed to be for a plane that had lots of reusing of nature, an emphasis on "cycles of life" if you will, where the realm was ruled by eco fanatical elves called Ecoseers, which made sure all energy was reused. It was supposed to be a Green mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol wedge.

@Darkerling That is a great idea as I want the lands to have a major effect on the game. I like the first one better for that reason, though I think if we add in a Tap symbol cost it might be a little better balanced. But yeah that is the direction I think the lands in this block need to go.

@Crimson Reaper I like the cards. We could also experiment with cards that care about if you sacrifice a card, rather than just recycle cause that way it is not to parasitic. Also do you have only creatures with recycle or do you also have other permanents with it?

Here are some lands that I think could be interesting:

Major Lands
[Uncommon White Major Land]
Land - Plains Uncommon
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
As long as you control five or more plains ~ has "3 mana symbol, Tap symbol: You gain 5 life."

[Uncommon Blue Major Land]
Land - Island Uncommon
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
As long as you control five or more islands ~ has "3 mana symbol, Tap symbol: Counter target spell that targets a permanent you control."

[Uncommon Black Major Land]
Land - Swamp Uncommon
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
As long as you control five or more swamps ~ has "3 mana symbol, Tap symbol: Destroy target non black creature."

[Uncommon Red Major Land]
Land - Mountain Uncommon
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
As long as you control five or more mountains ~ has "3 mana symbol, Tap symbol: Destroy target artifact."
-by Darkerling

[Uncommon Green Major Land]
Land - Forest Uncommon
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
As long as you control five or more forests ~ has "3 mana symbol, Tap symbol: Target creature gets +2/+2 and gains trample until end of turn."

As an idea for the common or rare Major Lands we could do some form of fetch lands. Such as:

[Common White Major Land]
Land Common
Tap symbol: Add White mana symbol to your mana pool.
1 mana symbol, Tap symbol, Sacrifice ~: Search your library for a Forest (or Mountain) or Island (or Swamp) card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library.

or

[Rare White Major Land]
Land Rare
Tap symbol: Add White mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, Sacrifice ~: Search your library for a Forest (or Mountain) or Island (or Swamp) card and put it onto the battlefield. Then shuffle your library.

If we wanted to we could also do another uncommon cycle with these effects instead of a common or rare cycle.

I did make a few, but I only got so far as to make greens. In addition, I doubt they would be considered anything like "parasitic". They were things like a sorcery/instant that says "You gain 1 life for each permanent you recycled this turn". Etc
But at the moment, it may be better to focus on these special lands. If I get you guys confused with recycle then it may just jumble the thread.
BTW I really like the use of special lands. I think its nice to make a rather simple thing become something different. If I have any ideas on those, I'll post them, but I'll have to catch up first Big smile

@CrimsonReaper I didn't mean it in a bad way, but it is parasitic. If a card like "You gain 1 life for each permanent you recycled this turn." was used in any other deck than one with a good amount of recycle in it it would be useless. That is the definition of a parasitic ability.

They aren't always bad but I would prefer to keep them to a bare minimum, so instead we could have a card that reads "You gain 1 life for each permanent you sacrificed this turn." This way the card could be used in any deck that has sacrifice effects.

@Miru I like that idea and that is the kind of thing that I would like to see with reincarnate. Though to see it on a non creature sounds kind of funny thematically, a reincarnated lightning bolt. How does that happen? LOL

And don't worry about the edit. No need to apologize.

So anybody have any ideas for the lands? If not we can just move on to something else for now.

I think that perhaps the Process effect should only apply to artifacts, maybe.

Tectonic Plate
Land (rarity? I dunno)
~ comes into play tapped.
As long as there is a *p* counter on ~, it doesn't untap during its controller's untap step.
During your upkeep, you may remove a *p* counter from ~.
Tap symbol: add 1 mana symbol to your mana pool.
3 mana symbol,Tap symbol : Destroy target land. Put 2 *p* counters on Tectonic Plate.

*corrupt government*'s Headquarters
Legendary Land Red mana symbol
You may not play ~ on the first turn.
If, during your upkeep, your opponents control no lands, you win the game.
Tap symbol: add 1 mana symbol to your mana pool. You lose 1 life.
I had a good idea for flavor text here, but I lost it.

Recycling Plant
Land Blue mana symbol
Tap symbol: Target permanent without Recycle gains "Recycle: X mana symbol" until the end of turn, where X is 1 less than that card's converted mana cost.

Unstable Ridge
Land Colorless mana symbol
~ comes into play tapped.
Tap symbol: add 1 mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, sacrifice ~: destroy up to 3 attacking creatures without flying.

This one will probably require some fine tuning:
Prism Vault
Land M Mana for MTG Extra
Whenever a permanent you control with Recycle is moved to the graveyard from play and you did not Recycle it, you may exile that card instead. Put X charge counters onto ~, where X is that card's recycle mana.
Tap symbol: add 1 mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, remove X charge counters from ~: Add X mana of any combination of colors to your mana pool.

Soulstealer Vault
Land Red mana symbol
When ~ comes into play, exile all cards with Reincarnate from all graveyards.
Whenever a card with Reincarnate would be moved to the graveyard from anywhere, exile that card instead.

Thinking of the land absorbing the mana back into itself and the Soulstealer vault, maybe story-wise that would come into either Fried or Over-Easy. Some sort of menace or overuse by the *government* causes entrances to *The Void* to start appearing, and they and the *guerrilla force* need to work together to find some way to avoid their universe being absorbed into *The Void*. The Vault would also need a different name.

Lands...

[Some sort of Plains]
Land [rarity]

Land [rarity]
~ comes into play tapped.
Tap symbol: add Red mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, exile a card with Reincarnate from your graveyard: ~ deals damage equal to that card's converted Reincarnate cost to target creature or player.

[Some sort of Forest]
Land [rarity]
~ comes into play tapped.
Tap symbol: add Green mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, exile a card with Reincarnate from your graveyard: Put X +1/+1 counters on target creature, where X is the exiled card's converted Reincarnate cost.

[Some sort of Island]
Land [rarity]
~ comes into play tapped.
Tap symbol: add Blue mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, exile a card with Reincarnate from your graveyard: Draw a number of cards equal to the exiled card's converted Reincarnate cost.

[Some sort of Swamp]
Land [rarity]

Tap symbol: add Black mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, exile a card with Reincarnate from your graveyard: Destroy target creatures with total tougness equal to the converted mana cost of the exiled card. You gain that much life.

I do like the idea you proposed about the "government" causing "voids" to appear around the world and the two factions having to work together to close a "greater void". Thinking about it we could have the Process mechanic do something like this:

Process — [cost], Exile this card from your graveyard: [effect]. Put a void counter on target permanent. (When a permanent with a void counter on it would be put into a graveyard, exile it instead.)

The lands are a little clunky and a bit to parasitic for me. How would something like this fit your idea:

[Some Sort of Land]
Land [Rarity]
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
Tap symbol: Add [Mana] to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, Exile a card from your graveyard: [Effect]. If the exiled card had Reincarnate, [This Effect] instead.

Example:

Islevoid
Land Rare
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
Tap symbol: Add Blue mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol, Exile a card from your graveyard: Draw a card. If the card had Reincarnate, draw a number of cards equal to the exiled cards converted mana cost instead.

Otherwise I like the idea. Though I think that a cycle of these type of lands would fit more into [Fried]. It [Scrambled] I think we should do a cycle of Process lands with the version of Process listed above.

What does everyone else think?

Well, I don't presume to claim any part of the set. I'm just throwing out ideas.

For example...

Volcano Chain
Land - Mountain Colorless mana symbol
~ comes into play tapped.
Tap symbol: add Red mana symbol to your mana pool.
Tap symbol(maybe sacrifice it, too?): ~ deals damage to target creature or player equal to the number of mountains (you control/in play).

...and another for each other basic land type. With different effects, of course.
I think my last land set's green land would be better with "put tokens into play" rather than +1/+1 counters.

As this is a community set everyone who works on it will get credit. So for even just throwing ideas out you will be mentioned in some way.

I kind of like the idea of the Chain lands. With a sacrifice cost as well we can keep them at common and have them with cool effects like the damage.

So you are suggesting that we reuse evoke but only with creatures that have reincarnate?

Also I wasn't saying that we can't have it on non creatures, I was just saying the idea of a reincarnating lightning bolt sounds funny.

Well, the mana does need to go somewhere, and it seems that the land would have an easier time absorbing mana from spells that are essentially raw energy than from creatures composed of matter.

Processing Plant

All artifacts in your graveyard have "Process 3 mana symbol: put X 1/1 artifact creatures (of some sort) into play, where X is this card's converted mana cost.

I have an idea for the story of the block:

Spoiler:
Set 1: <Insert Plane Name Here>
This set introduces the "EvilCorruptGoverment" and their plan to control the recycling of energy. The "ECG" found the energy cycling "hot spots" on the plane and constructed large factories over top of them to harness the Reincarnate Flows. These factories litter the surface of the plane and produce a thick smog that is choking the Reincarnate Flows, which are the main source of mana on the plane.

This set also introduces the "EcoTerrorists" who are fighting for the environment of the plane. They aren't doing much in this set other than building an army and occasionally destroying a factory or two.

Set 2: <Planename> At War
"ECG" and "EcoTerror" are waging a war. Not much to this set besides that. EcoTerror is using more of a guerrilla tactic, while ECG has trained warriors fighting for them.

While the war is being fought, the ECG is forcing the factories to bring in twice as much energy to fight the war. This is producing much more smog and blocking off nearly all of the Reincarnate Flows.

Set 3: <planename> Renewed
This set takes place many years after the war. The smog has cut off all of the Reincarnate Flows and slowly, the entire population of <planename> has died. Lately, the factories have begun to rot away and the smog is lifting. A planeswalker planeswalks to <planename> and finds an empty plane. With the smog lifting, the mana flows are back on track. Because of this, the planeswalker decides to colonize the planet. Upon arriving the second time with the colonists, the planeswalker sees the plane is not empty, but inhabited by horrendous beast the have evolved to live through the mana-less world. The colonists must fight for their lives on the plane.

That's just an idea. The last set is kind of weird because normal people can't planeswalk. Maybe futuristic?

Also I think a nice Rebel theme could be used for the EcoTerror group

Some Ideas I had for names are:
Plane: Raphia
ECG: Raphian Administration Counsel (Rapac)
EcoTerror: I got nothing.

Looking at the set as downloaded just now, I think the plains thing is a bit ridiculous. A practically guaranteed 5 life every turn is a bit powerful, and especially unbalanced compared to the other lands, besides the swamp. I think it would make more sense for the sacrifice one to be gain life and the 3 mana symbolTap symbol one be damage prevention.

@k1l1 I like where you are going with the story. Except with the third set. It just doesn't seem at all related to the previous two. That seems like it would be more of a returning to this plane first set or second set. We could do a mixture of yours and Faustenbergers' suggested outcome of the two joining forces to seal up the "void".

@Faust Yeah I was thinking that as well. I will switch them.

This may come in a later set, but I think the next obvious thing to happen mechanics-wise is that some cards will have Protection from Lands. Just throwing that out there.

We may also want to consider making Tap symbol a mandatory cost for Recycling.

That is true. Especially if we plan on having any man lands.

Yeah thinking about it, adding in the good ol Tap symbol would help make the ability less breakable.

Thinking about the name for the sets I came up with these:

Set 1: <Plane Name>
Set 2: Putrescence
Set 3: Voidswell

I was thinking that my Set 3 was a bit different from the others, but then I thought of Rise of the Eldrazi, how that was story-related but not really mechanically related. But yeah, the way you have the story now works fine. Better actually.

So we're going with

<planename> - Introduces groups.
Putrescence - Groups have a war. Does the war tear open a void, or does the war block off the Reincarnate Flows which in turn tears open a void?
Voidswell - Void grows larger. Groups set aside difference and seal the void. Then the Rebel group turns on the government and kills them ALL! MWAHAHAHA!

A thought I had while writing this is that we should get some names down for the groups and the plane.

EDIT: Oo! Idea as soon as I posted this! What if the void didn't suck them up, but was some sort of wormhole that sent bizarre creatures through? That could add a nice mechanical change to the last set, without having to turn the whole world into a wasteland.

The "ECG"'s tampering with the planets energy flow is what caused small voids to appear around the world. We can have it so that through this void strange horrors appear and start attacking the people of the world. This is how the "EcoTerrorists" form, as civilians that want to stop the "ECG" from continuing their destruction and causing more people to die. After time, and a small war, the "ETs" reveal to the "ECG" of the presence of the voids as well as learning that there is a greater void that is threatening to release an even greater horror that has the power to destroy the entire plane.

Also about whether or not we have planeswalkers. I think that we can go with some as long as they fit into the story, of course.

We could have a black/white planeswalker working for, or as the head of the "ECG", who is greedy, money hungry, and has the power to manipulate illumination levels (light/darkness).

And if people are interested we could have Kiora Atua, from DotP 2012, appear as one of the "ETs" since she kind of seems to fit the type.

I like the idea though I think the wording could be a little clearer. Also it seems a little odd since all of the abilities pretty much do the same thing.

How about something like this:

Planeswalker - Dolben Mythic Rare
+1: Add White/black mana symbolWhite/black mana symbolWhite/black mana symbol to your mana pool. Put a void counter on target permanent you control.
-2: Each other player discards a card. You draw a card for each card discarded this way.
-7: Sacrifice any number of permanents you control with a void counter on it. Each other player sacrifices the same number of permanents.

Well, I suppose making swamps/plains also the other one wouldn't really work, but what the -9 thing does is make all plains and swamps produce 2 mana each; one of white, and one of black. I suppose void counters would be a good thing to have him create, but I think it would make more sense if he couldn't remove them. (being the corrupt evil ignorant-of-the-consequences guy he would be) Maybe (the other side has a planeswalker?) and he had stuff that removed void counters.

Updated my Dolben.

I agree but I couldn't really think of anything that would fit in that area. How about:

"Each opponent discards a card. Draw a card for each card discarded this way."

So a Syphon Mind effect. I like it. Or we could do:

"Target player discards a card for each permanent you control with a void counter on it."

And maybe add on the, "Draw a card for each card discarded this way."
