I'm not sure if this has explicitly been done before, however, I would like host a create-a-land contest. The rules are simple: the contest will start with the Contest Master(currently me, will be the winner of the previous contest), declaring two requirements, a mechanic (Anything rules related, like keywords, card types, etc,) and a flavor.
An example could be: "Make a land focusing around fire and working with Artifacts.

Clarified (and complete) Rules:

  • Entries should use the flavor and mechanics requirements
  • Entries must obey by forum rules
  • Only one entry per person, if you submit two, neither will be considered
  • For Contest Masters, Only two requirements, and please, no favoritism, it makes these contests less fun for all.

Requirements for contest:
Mechanic: Anti-Enchanment
Flavor: Battle-scarred\

Judging: April 25, 2011 EDIT: Moved forward to April 13

EDIT: Just realized, I didn't post the judging criteria.

Judging will be based on the following:
Flavor: 4pts
Use of Mechanic: 4pts
Balance and usability: 2pts
Coherence: 1pt
*CM's feel free to add points as necessary, keep in mind that the mechanic and flavor should be equal and the most important

Please don't count me off for wording on the second ability.

*EDIT*
I'm sorry I couldn't post earlier, the internet here died when judging was supposed to take place.

And Now here it is:

The winner is:

Spoiler:
windandfire: Scarred Valley: Nice card, the flavor coherence and balance seem just right and the mechanic fits 11/11

Honorable Mention

Spoiler:
Sgmendez of Ravinca, Guerriero, Magic Dead Zone, very powerful, especially when used in a green deck and the flavor is quite good. Even with all the power it is still balanced, however the anti-enchantment seems a little anti-climactic. 10/11

and the rest(in order of Posting):

Spoiler:
Darkerling: Rusting Junkyard, it is sort of anti-enchantment, so I will give you those points, but I don't get a Battle-scarred vibe to it, I think that the title and flavor text could be changed a little and adding a *do something* to the tap for mana would also help: 5/11

Alphaforce: I like the card and am glad you did your little edit. I would now consider it anti-enchantment, However it seems a little under-powered for a rare, a a land that taps for 1 mana symbol and has an ETB single target effect is more likely going to be a common or uncommon not a rare. As with Darkerling, there isn't much to show that your land is battle-scarred, I think that the addition of flavor text would have helped. 5/11

Khahil: This card is interesting, it certainly is Anti-enchantment, in fact that is all it seems to do, it also doesn't feel breakable, or under powered, but there isn't really a battle-scarred flavor to this one: 6/11

TheAmazingKamahl: Has some Battle-scarred juices going, I think that this was def third place, it has a very nice anti enchantment feature, except it doesn't feel red, I may just be imagining things from lack of sleep however. 9/11

pantherpage: I didn't expect to see a Special card as a submission. It is a cool card, however, it seems to me like enchantments have very little to do with it. It's flavor text reveals a hint of battle-scarredness, and matching up to the rules text, it sort of fits, however the forgiving part seems most definitely not battle-scarred. 5/11

Nerameshu: The graveyard requirement seems battle scarred, but a name and flavor might emphasize it more. The anti enchantment effect seems balanced and otherwise alright, however it does sort of seem out of place like it was just slapped on to fit the contest, 7/11

Picks-at-Flies: Looks like a fun card to play, however the neighbors blight sound like the lands near it are battle scarred not it. 8/11

It seems that a number of people edited there submission after posting, this is fine for me, but I am leaving it up to wind and fire and future CM's to decide whether they will allow/take them. Therefore, when editing, put the edited card after an *EDIT* marker and leave the starting card.

@windandfire You may want to make your contest 10 days long instead of seven to allow for more posts, but as you are now the CM, it is up to you.

Good luck to you all for windandfire's contest.

Neat! So after thinking a bit I believe I've got a fun challenge. It's going to be a bit unusual.

I want to see a land that represents some piece of the sky where magic is amplified/altered/pooled. Be sure the card represents somewhere in the sky, and not just a tall structure or floating island.

In summery:

Mechanics: Magic-Boosting Nexus (i.e. Alara's Malestrum, Zendikar's Eye of Ugin, one of Mirrodin's five Lacuna)
Flavor: An area of the skyscape. (NOT a floating island, tower, or cliff).

I'll announce a deadline after I see a few entries. You may edit your submission at any time, I refresh the page right before I post the scores to be sure I didn't miss anything.

@werrdna50 Would you mind if I didn't follow your judging/point guidelines? It's OK if you do mind, I just prefer selecting a winner on feel without tallying up numbers. It forces me to give better critique.

I might need to clarify a bit: by "amplified", I don't mean it must tap for lots of mana, there's other options (and it's pretty difficult to balance multiple mana). Just wanted to clarify in case it sounded like I required it.

--

I hope you like my special designator for the land. "Periodic", no. Not idiotic. This Land will "trigger" by special criteria.
3 different color types of mana must be spent this round, by you or any opponent to untap Prismatic Polar Lights.
(1 black mana, 1 blue mana and 1 green mana will untap Prismatic Polar Lights. 3 white mana will not untap Prismatic Polar Lights. 1 white mana and 2 blue mana will not untap Prismatic Polar Lights. 3 colorless will not untap Prismatic Polar Lights. 1 colorless, 1 black mana and 1 red mana will untap Prismatic Polar Lights)

I seem to be drawn to this prismatic stuff. Makes a card rather variable.

(For example, if you cast a spell with mana cost 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbol, it costs 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol to cast.)

Spoiler:

One Edit to Rule Them All: My post was starting to look really messy, and I was tired of putting "EDIT" all over it, so I'm putting all of it in this spoiler.

Spoiler:
Originally this card was rare and read, "White mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol, Tap symbol, Sacrifice Pentad Nebula: Spells you cast this turn cost White mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol less to cast. This effect reduces only the amount of colored mana you pay." This version of the card broke completely when combined with Fist of Suns, and I asked for any ideas that might help me fix that.

Nerameshu suggested something along the lines of Lodestone Golem, which inspired me to add an additional cost to the reduced cost... if that makes any sense. I considered a clause like the one on Training Grounds, but that sort of clause has only appeared when altering activated abilities, and I didn't want to think about how it interacted with simple costs like Agony Warp. Would it cost 1 mana symbol or Blue/black mana symbol? Trinisphere answered my call to aid. Now, Agony Warp simply costs 3 mana symbol. Not exactly a bargain, but two-mana spells are not what this card was designed to abuse. Winking smiley

Since you can't live mana-free with this and the Fist any more, I took the sacrifice off of the cost, making this a way cool card. Because it's puzzling, (and probably useless within its own set,) just like Eye of Ugin, the only other mythic land. (Not counting the From the Vaults: Exiled Strip Mine.)

Also, I'm really glad that editing your post doesn't bump it to the end of the thread, like it did with the old forum software. Woot!

Getting 2 mana symbol a turn without a restriction (you get a charge counter each turn, so it's not much of a restriction) is really really strong as it is. And that effect is just crazy. There's a reason Aether Vial was banned. I'm not really getting the "skyscape" feel from this either. It might have been part of your idea, but it doesn't come through in the flavor.

I like how you made one of the actual mirrian suns A happy smile. Unfortunatly, white philosophy doesn't fit with throwing yourself to sacrifice for worship. The sac clause does do some to help offset the fact that it can give 2 mana a turn (colored at that!), but it's still really powerful turn three or later. Finally, two very important difference between this and White Sun's Zenith is this effect is cheaper AND you can do it every turn. That's a bit over the top.

Nice Norse touch, there. Like I said above, tapping for multiple mana without a drawback (ETB/CIP tapped isn't enough to warrent adding two mana, especially if it's colored) is really, really too good. The ravnica lands were fair because they set you behind a turn in land count. Entering the battlefield tapped is only a temperary setback, and after that first turn does nothing to keep the power in check. I like the last ability, and it's nicely costed I feel, but I'm not seeing the flavor from it. Both the name and the flavor text seem to lean the other way when it comes to flying.

I cleaned up your wording a bit. In a few places I guessed at what you were trying to do (such as "until end of turn"), let me know if I misinterpreted.

Eight abilities on one card (an uncommon card!) is too much. I'd challenge you to find a card printed since Onslaught that has eight abilities on it. I like that you're trying to do something magic hasn't done before (with the periodic type), but the execution feels messy. I think the untap requirement doesn't need to be there at all, it just feels like the only thing it brings to the card is complication (cards should be intuitive, so players don't have to start their turn thinking if something's going to work or not). Imagine if you're playing a game and being attacked. Then your opponent plays Untamed Might, tapping all his lands for X mana symbol. Then he copies it for each creature he has. That's what the (second) tab ability is doing. Black doesn't get the ability to tap lands, and I'm not sure what you mean by "This counts toward Prismatic Polar Lights Periodic tap requirement". Green isn't really that concerned with toughness most of the time. Trample is green's signature ability, and only very rarely fits in red. White isn't the go-to color for mana acceleration either. Despite this big block of text, I think you've captured the flavor you were aiming for very well. I'd would have liked to see a bit more simplicity, but you gave a good effort. A bit of advice for future card creation: If it seems like a card doesn't have enough going on, it probably does.

Quick question: Does space phenomena have a place in Magic? A happy smile
While I admire the elegance, the second clause on the ability is really unintuitive (speaking about the combination of the clauses, not the individual parts). Overall I think it makes players do too much math (You've seen me play my Niv-Mizzet deck, and you know how bad THAT is A happy smile). I'd suggest allowing the WUBRG to reduce colorless mana as well, and keep the "less than 3 clause". Investing WUBRG is already costly to activate the ability, and you want to be sure you'll have leftover mana to cast multiple spells. Finally, I'd like the flavor if it represented a mana-stream in the sky, but I'm afraid space might go a bit too far.

Shard-filter, very interesting. I miss cards like this that require you to be careful with what type of mana you're spending. I can picture the image being something like beams of mana dividing into seperate paths/colors. The only complaint I have is that it does everything. The signets from Ravnica made an entire 10 card cycle, and the lands from Shards of Alara were unique to each shard.

Invisible Stellar Garden

Shroud
~ comes into play tapped and does not untap during your untap step.
Tap symbol: Add 2 mana of any combination of colours to your mana pool.
Tap a land you control and untap a land you don't control: Add 1 mana symbol to your mana pool. Untap ~.

Turn two you can get three mana. After that, you can get three mana per turn. And if your opponent doesn't have a 1 mana instant, the downside is hardly an issue. The land you control that you have to tap doesn't matter, since you're getting 1 mana symbol from the ability anyways. It doesn't need shroud. In fact, lands hardly ever need shroud, because there's so few things that target them. I'm not sure the exact flavor you were going for, but I like the idea of a floating garden. You might be able to make the abilities feel more garden-like however.

Great job everybody, some really creative and flavorful entries. Ultimatly, it came down to KikuShadowBlades and MonkeyChewToy. I felt that both entries were really strong, but in the end, the winner is Monkey. I think you captured the power-nexus mechanic really well, with just a few hickups. Again, good job everybody. I look forward to seeing this game continue for a long while.

Wow, two wins in the same day? Cool! I spent a good chunk of time working out the wrinkles in this one. You're right, of course; I don't think I got it perfect. But close enough. Winking smiley

Okay. This next one is a little bit simple, but I want to see something neat anyway. I just want to see a land that can produce three (and exactly three) different colors of mana. It can be any three colors; I don't care if it's enemy or ally triplets. Have fun!

Some cards to keep in mind for this:

If I'm not mistaken, that's the entirety of the three-color lands: Four five-color cycles, and one single card. Let's spice things up!
