Forum Software: Upgraded

So, I don't have much time here as I'm about to go off to my job, but I just want to take a moment to make a posting about this.

As at least one user guessed, Twan carried out a forum software upgrade yesterday. We were previously running on Drupal 4.7, and are now running on Drupal 6.20. Our hope is that this will give us more tools to fight the spambot problem without requiring user verification, and more tools to make the site better in general.

However, when you do a forum software upgrade, things happen. We had the downtime to allow this to take place, and now, there may be bugs or errors. If you encounter a bug or error, or any other problems, please feel free to post about it here.

Thanks, and enjoy the site. A happy smile

Edit: Yes, we know there are no smilies. We're working on it.

Drupal isn't exactly forum software, is it? It's a sort of forum-wiki combo? Out of curiosity, can you install custom apps here?

Problem: the "Recent Posts" page lacks the buttons to open a thread on a specific page.

Also, "recent posts" isn't capitalized.

Another problem... while browsing the forums, there aren't any links to go to any specific page. Just the thread title that takes you to the first page.

I've noticed that, but that's gonna have to be one for Twan. I can't find a setting in the administration controls for that.

On the upside, the "# New Posts" link works correctly too.

@AI: There aren't any at the top of the page anymore, but there are at the bottom of the page for me. Do you not see them? It might be a permissions issue of some weird sort.

I meant on the forums themselves, not the threads themselves. And in the thread they show up at the bottom only.

Oh, yeah, I see what you're saying. In all fairness though, those were getting pretty ugly in the Forum Games section. Stick out your tongue Every single page was listed making the screen wider and wider and... Unless it can be reinstituted as a "1,2,3,4,LAST" setup or something like that, where only a set number of pages appear on the forum page, then I'd say it should stay out. I don't think that a few clickable pages is what you're after though, but for large threads, having every page clickable via the forum thread listing is ridiculous.

EDIT: Just remembered the word I was looking for... I'm suggesting a truncated list of the pages in the forum listing, or none at all. 51 pages, all clickable under one thread title on a single line is a mess and screws up the site's width horribly. I'm saying the first 4 with a "last" option or the last 4 with a "first" option.

I just want to go ahead and apologize to everyone for what we just did to the tracker. Yes, I realize every VS and YGO post ever made on the forum has been bumped. We moved them all to General Questions and closed their forums, and it had unexpected consequences.

All the actual recent content has been pushed back to pages 4 or 5.

Again, I'm very sorry.

That change was fast because it is as easy as check marking a box in one of the admin control panels. And, I knew where it was from previous endeavors into messing with the menus.

Something that took longer was rebuilding the smilies. I don't know if the old smilies will ever come back, if they need time to be refreshed or what, but the smilies are all back up for use: http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/filter/tips/5#filter-smileys-0

Turned on the smiley block on submission pages for quick reference. It's kind of quirky though, and only appears on the "Preview" page, Laugh Out Loud. Oh well, at least it's there if you guys need quick reference to them.

NM: Figured that glitch out. The smiley block is now visible on all submission pages, and you can hide it if you don't want to see it via your account settings.

No one was using them anyway, on almost all comments it was just the first sentence of the post.
But the 'subject' box on the comment page should indeed be removed.

They do serve a purpose: I could link to an individual post by copying the url the subject line provided, so yes, I would like them back. It was useful in conversing with other staff, linking people to their violations in reprimands, and calling on old info without saying something like "14th post down" or "windandfire's fourth post on that page".

I think I twice made posts without putting some thought into the subject line. I quickly edited them to remedy that. It was usually a quip, a halfway-relevant song lyric, or perhaps an anagram of something I was about to say. Nothing earth-shaking, but something of a loss.

R.I.P. Subject line, we barely knew you.

In other words, the new software is splendid. I'm using the quick reply as I type, and I expect it to make it less of a hassle to edit the second-to-last post in a thread. Winking smiley

EDIT: I too would like a truncated page listing. No one should be forced to scroll to the right; it's just wrong. There's a pun there, but it's too easy. Stick out your tongue
EDIT II: I just got a new laptop charger, so I'm back to viewing with a widescreen format. All is right with the world. Winking smiley
