Welcome to our 4th Card of the Week Competition! This start the year of contests off we're going back in time to 1992. Magic: The Gathering isn't even on the shelves yet, but it soon will be as Alpha heads to the printing presses. Richard Garfield and his creation team have just realized that the set is one card short of perfection and have requested that you design that card. They're looking for something spectacular, something that players will remember for many years to come. For this week's challenge, design the 10th of the Power Nine cards. Keep in mind the real P9 when designing, as well as the P9 honorable mention, presented at this link. Now, it is good to note that the winning entry will be featured on the Welcome page, as well as 2 runners up, and all three will be featured in the soon to be released ABU Template which has been converted from Xerent's popular Photoshop template of the same name. The winning card will also represent the template on its download page at pifro, and will be the featured thumbnail for it in our downloads section here. Your entry will represent not only the site and design community, but it will here forward represent an actual MSE2 template. The winning card will be the first thing anyone who wants to download that template will see, or in other words, your card will be part of what inspires them to download it to begin with. Rules (failure to follow the following will result in automatic disqualification): *) All entries should be in the following format (if you are unfamiliar with BBcode, click here): Quote: Name [COST] The rules are not optional. If you take a tl;dr (too long; didn't read) approach to them, then I take the same to your entry and will not include it in the poll. Please keep this in mind. Finally, a heads up to everyone, I will absolutely not request that you correct your entries this week. If you mess it up, it really isn't going to be included. No ands, ifs, or buts about it. This is your only warning. The entry deadline is 11:59PM CST 01/08/11. Voting will last 1 day after that, so please be prepared to cast your vote! EDIT: Corrected the deadline from 01/07/11 to 01/08/11. Sorry about any confusion. |

Tome of Knowledge

, Sacrifice ~: Search your library for a card with converted mana cost 3 or less and put that card into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

The member of Power 10 that fetches the other?? Cool
The tagless one:
ORAORAORA!!!!!
I'm breaking my rule of never purposefully designing overpowered cards with this, but oh well.
Sinister Pact -

Sorcery -
Search your library for a card and cast that card without paying it's mana cost. You lose life equal to that card's converted mana cost.

I added a link to the PSD version of the template over at MTGS for people to see. The MSE2 templates looks identical, with the added bonus of Tri-hybrids mana symbols and many other features. I hope you all will enjoy this template as much as the shoopers have!
Doomsday Machine
Continuous Artifact
If you control no cards other than Doomsday Machine and lands then you win the game.
Wording is purposely bad to match Alpha era text, updated text is as follows:
Why it's part of the Power 9? Back during alpha there was no 4 card limit. Clearly people would have stuffed their deck with moxes and lotuses to slam this out on the first turn. Of course, the idea would be it's something large and powerful that takes forever to get out, but we all know what happened with mana acceleration..
Tagless version:
Current sets:
Gateways (On hiatus)
Alpha wording:
Temple of the Damned

Mono Artifact
Removes a card in your hand from the game to remove target card in play the same way.
---
Oracle:
Temple of the Damned

, Exile a card from your hand: Exile target permanent.
Artifact

Reasoning:
Howling Mine costs the same as this and is actually a location. Which is why I didn't make it a land. I tried to make this P9 material - as in, any deck could play it to do better.
Prismatic Mind Mox

: Choose one - Add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool, or draw a card.
Artifact
Prismatic Mind Mox enters the battlefield tapped.
Eridian Gunsmoke New cards and lore under development. Take a look see?
Judas Priest made me do it! XD
Proud member of the Eridian Cavalry
( Old name was "Lady o' Armageddon" )

Orb of Ends

, Sacrifice a land: Destroy target land.

Neat and all and I understand why you did it from your post below, but Contest Rule #1 still applies. Don't do it again or for the sake of fairness I'll have to disqualify you. - AF

For Those Starting A New Set - READ IT
Thank you, Mr Waffle. Glad it hasn't gone completely unnoticed.
I can tell you now, I'm not going to be doing that with every entry, too much work.
I only did it for this one, because I could have the original text on the card (probably got that a bit wrong, but ah well) and still show Oracle text where it should be. For other cards I do, it'll look the same on the card and the Oracle, so I won't bother.

Phantasmal Edge

: Creatures you control become unblockable until end of turn.
Artifact
City of Tomorrow
Land
Tap to add 2 colorless mana to your mana pool.
(I'm not sure on the power level here, but I wanted something that would look good on paper but be stupidly powerful in play, the perfect criterion for power 10.)

Summon Horror

4/3
New wording:
I wanted to make it a creature and I wanted to do not black or artifact to mix it up. This seemed like a good fit as it looks great when just looking at it and it meets a fantasy flavorful effect which I am a little surprised they did not use in Alpha to begin with.

Mox Alexandrite

Mono Artifact
Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Tapping this artifact can be played as an interrupt.
While I looked through the Mox cards, I noticed that it was missing one - one that would allow its user to tap for any mana, instead of just one specific color. So, right away I came up with a Mox Alexandrite. Why alexandrite? Because alexandrite changes color depending on the light it is viewed in.
If someone else has already done something like this and I'm unintentionally aping their work, please feel free to DQ the entry.
