Legendary Creature – Angel Red mana symbol
Other creatures get -0/-2.
Black mana symbolTap symbol : ~ deals 2 damage to target creature or player. You gain 2 life.
4/5

Seems a bit strange to give other creatures -0/-2, makes numbers a bit trickier, but a good way to remove stuff. Seems a bit odd with the second ability, as you'd want to use the second ability to kill of the cheap things, but the first ability already does that. Also, an Angel without flying?

Guardian of the Fallen Red mana symbol
Netherworld Spirit [1]
Unique. Not affected by opponent's Events. When CARDNAME enters combat, inflict X damage on each Character she is in combat with. X = the number of Characters in that Character's controller's smoked pile.
4 /

I'll say firstly – I can't judge this completely fairly, as I don't know enough about Shadowfist. But, based on what I can see and what you've said, it plays quite well. I think that it being more and more powerful the more it kills things might make it a little too good (I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking it costing 4 is a bit cheap), regardless if you play it late game, it'd kill a lot of things easily. However, it has only 1 Fighting, so it should be handled with relative ease, not to mention you can't have more than one of her out at once.

Life After Death 4 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Enchantment Red mana symbol

Sorry, but this will be rather frank. Proper Burial. For 2 mana symbol I get to choose not to gain that life? Doesn't seem worth it, sorry.

Serra Forlorn 2 mana symbolWhite/black mana symbolWhite/black mana symbol
Planeswalker – Serra M Mana for MTG Extra
+2: Exile target creature in a graveyard.
-4: Exile target creature.
-8: Put each creature exiled by Serra Forlorn onto the battlefield under your control. They are white spirits in addition to their other types.
{4}

Luckily, the render had the starting loyalty. Sort of a better Karn Liberated. Not overpowered, as she'd kill herself to exile that creature, and you actually need a dead creature to exile, otherwise she can't get bigger, so no worrying about making it too good. No Blightsteel Colossus shenanigans – he doesn't stay in a graveyard very well. Fits perfectly into the two colours, I actually can't find a fault.

elmdor

Spoiler:
Angel of Cruelty 4 mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel Blue mana symbol
Flying
When Angel of Cruelty enters the battlefield, each opponent loses 3 life.
3/3

A nice take on Angel of Mercy, and playable! Almost a Howling Banshee, but for the extra mana you get to exempt yourself, which is nice. I don't think there's anything wrong with this power-wise, however I would say it feels a bit of a bore playing it, much like Howling Banshee.

Spoiler:
Carrier of the Weak 3 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel Red mana symbol
Flying
Whenever a creature dies, you may put a +1/+1 counter on ~.
Remove a +1/+1 counter from ~: Put a 1/1 black and white Spirit creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
3/3

The card wouldn't be too bad, if it weren't for one fundamental broken flaw – Altar of Dementia, Carrion Feeder, and similar, who sacrifice a creature to make an effect, but then this angel gets a +1/+1 counter on it which you remove to create another creature, then repeat the process. Ignoring that, the card has good flavour and works well and I do like it.

Noahlotr

Spoiler:
The Final Death 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Enchant creature in a graveyard
Enchanted creature cannot leave the graveyard.
Valkyries on Valla give war heroes the ultimate honor. They take the heroes' souls so that they may rest forever and never have to return to fighting.

Regrettably, this lacks a card type (Enchantment – Aura, I'm guessing) but also a rarity. The card works in a rather interesting way, though I think it's a little overcosted, seeing as exiling that card does almost as much. If it can't leave the graveyard then it's not much use to you either. Having said that, it would go nicely with Vengeful Pharaoh.

Jbest

Spoiler:
Deathcast Angel Red mana symbol
3 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature -- Angel
Flying, deathtouch, lifelink
Deathcast Angel enters the battlefield tapped.
6/6
Almost a Baneslayer Angel planeshift. I think the entering tapped is a fair enough way to power it up to 6/6, though, considering recent zombies. I don't know if it needs the mythic tag, however it would be pressing it very closely if not. I'd have put it as mythic, probably, just for the fact it is rather nasty.

Raznaak

Spoiler:
Noctura, the Slayer White/black mana symbol
Legendary Creature – Angel Warrior M Mana for MTG Extra
Whenever a creature dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Noctura, the Slayer.
Sacrifice a creature: Noctura, the Slayer gets -1/-1 until the end of turn. Choose flying, first strike, vigilance or lifelink. Noctura, the Slayer gains that ability until your next upkeep.
1/1

I like how this card functions, but it feels a bit odd. It works against itself, really, which is good for power levels, but not for how the card looks. Not to mention, this could get really strong, really quick, considering it's just one mana. Something to deal with, I suppose. Feels like it could be an Arcbound Ravager (minus the modular, thankfully) with the cheapness and the ability to throw counters on it so easily.

Casshern

Spoiler:
Nirra, Fallen Lancer 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Legendary Creature – Angel Knight Red mana symbol
Flying, first strike
Whenever a creature dies, you may gain 1 life.
She used to save them from death, but now she merely steals their life force for her own use.
4/2

Goodness, there's nothing I can really think to say to improve this. I would mention that 1 life seems a bit futile, but for power levels, there's not really anything wrong with it. This card would definitely be used competitively, just because of its solid reliability. Really well done.

EyeofTruth

Spoiler:
Ravenblood Defiler 3 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel Blue mana symbol
Flying
Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, you may pay White mana symbol, if you do, exile it instead, and place a 1/1 white Spirit creature token onto the battlefield for each creature exiled this way.
3/3
Did you presume that your service had ended just because your heart doesn't beat blood anymore?

As I was reading it, it was looking pretty good – for White mana symbol you get to recycle your cards, but not brokenly as it's nontoken. But then I read the “for each creature exiled this way” and now, for White mana symbol I get to re-recycle that card? For an uncommon, this could get really big, even if it does require two colours.

MtaRidley

Spoiler:
Akroma the Returned 5 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Legendary Creature – Angel M Mana for MTG Extra
Flying, deathtouch, lifelink, vigilance, protection from white and from black
7/7
"You shall not stand in the way of my vengeance."

[=green]A bit close to Akroma, Angel of Wrath in my opinion, I don't feel the was much creative work done here, however it is different. I would say that for 8 mana across two colours, it fits nicely as a 7/7 and all those abilities make it a poweful reckoning force. [/colour]

Negative ZZ

Spoiler:
Serra Executor 4 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel
Flying, Deathtouch
4/4

Simple, but effective. Regrettably, no rarity, however I'd be guessing common or uncommon. It's a fair card, but I feel there was more design space. Try aiming for more complex things, it gives us more to judge, and lets you develop your design skills better. I can't technically fault the card itself, though, as it's a basic and clean card.

Sohel

Spoiler:
Soul Conductor 3 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel Red mana symbol
Flying
Whenever a nonspirit creature dies, put a 1/1 black and white Spirit creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
1 mana symbol, sacrifice a creature: You gain 1 life. Activate this ability only if you control more creatures that any opponent.
4/5

Clever way to stop this going infinite, by making it non-Spirit. I don't think the restriction was needed for the second ability, however, as it has an activation cost. Though, I can't call it too powerful, thanks to the restriction. Or can I? Getting a 1/1 flier whenever you lose another creature is quite good, especially with multiple of this. Still, not too powerful, really, seeing as it requires two colours and is 5 mana. The 4/5 flying body could push it a bit over the edge though, might've been better as a mythic, but I couldn't judge that too well.

Sewn-Eye

Spoiler:
Solemn Valkyrie 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Creature – Angel Soldier Red mana symbol
Flying, vigilance
Gallant- At the beginning of each upkeep, return a Soldier creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield if you control no other creatures.
3/4
"There is glory in death and there is glory after death."
-From the Tale of Valhalla

First point – 3/4 flier with vigilance for only 4 mana is quite strong. Not too strong to penalise for, but with the additional ability returning to the battlefield, I think this could be too good. The gallant restriction is alright, though, wouldn't make it overwhelming, just very good for 4 mana. I almost want to adapt it for the second Kune set, however the soldier theme wouldn't quite fit in, regrettably.

The1337

Spoiler:
Soul Transfer 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Enchantment – Aura Blue mana symbol
Enchant creature
When ~ enters the battlefield, choose a creature card in your graveyard.
Enchanted creature has all activated abilities of the chosen creature.
I live on.

Don't be too put down by the cost balance. This isn't too over or under costed at all, I think. Consider Necrotic Ooze, which gets all abilities, as opposed to just one creature's abilities, and the fact you could be “two-for-one”d, it being an Aura. It's a quirky card, and I can't seem to find much fault, although I'm gonna contradict myself, as I think it might be too weak, though it is uncommon.

Glim

Spoiler:
Life Drain 3 bw
sorcery mythic
you deal 4 damage to tagert player you gain 4 life and make a 4/4 with tap Zess opponent losses 2 life and you gain 2 life b/w legendary angel Zess the life taker

From what I could garner from this... You pay 5 mana to drain 5 life and get a 4/4 that drains 2 more life each turn. That isn't too bad, I suppose. I think you might've been better off using the creature style shown by AgentPaper, as it makes for less wordiness, but other than that, I don't think it's such a bad card. I would mention some need to work on presentation, however, but I'm sure you'll figure that out as you go.

Mamekok

Spoiler:
Soulsucker Angel3 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel Red mana symbol
Flying
Whenever a creature dealt damage by ~ this turn is put into a graveyard you may pay 2 mana symbol and draw two cards.
5/5

A 5/5 flier for 5 mana is quite potent, but I think acceptable. The extra ability is a nice one, but I think attached to such a strong body, it makes it rather overpowering, seeing as this is likely to be chump blocked often, meaning you get to draw a bunch of extra cards from it. I think on a slightly weaker body, this card would be really nice, and potentially a Wizards' card.

endblink

Spoiler:
Polemic Angel 4 mana symbolWhite/black mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature – Angel Red mana symbol
Flying, hexproof, vigilance
Players with zero or less life do not lose the game.
”Your normal approach is useless here.”
1/8

Two things that really stuck out at me... Mana costs containing hybrids seem a bit pointless when the same colour is present in the cost, nonhybrid. With the cards in Shard of Alara, the hybrids were of a different colour to the nonhybrid, but having it the same seems pointless, you might as well just have a colourless one. The other point was the power and toughness, mainly the power. 1/8 seems just like you've deliberately lowered it so it won't be strong, but why then have vigilance as though you plan to use it to attack? Another point – stopping you from death effect tend to be at mythic. Having said that, I do think that's a quirky thing, effectively stopping anyone from dying, and the “I can't be stopped” attitude of hexproof and uncounterability make this card sweetly playable, within the high mana curved decks.

Hmm. This picture is actually perfect for a card I've already made -

Avatar of Devastation Rare
Spirit of the Wasteland []
Unique. Uncopyable. Toast a Feng Shui Site that you control when this card enters play. Printed Fighting is equal to the Body of the toasted Site. The number of Feng Shui Sites you need for victory is reduced by one.
Pur Mag Mag Mag Mag 4 /

translation
  • [] - Fighting left blank intentionally. I could have made this an X value, but that would make the rules text more complicated, and there's precedent for this templating (from the original set!).
  • Unique - Legendary.
  • Uncopyable - May not be the target of effects that copy cards, rules text, or any other element of this card. There are a number of cards where this restriction could be argued unneccessary, but it's pretty much automatic on any card that changes your victory conditions.
  • Rules text - The goal of the game is to control a certain number of Feng Shui Sites, with the final site seized from an opponent. Playing this card removes one of your FSSs from play, but also reduces the number you need to win, effectively leaving you just as close to victory. You lose the FSS itself and any abilities it had, but you gain a potentially powerful Character.
  • Cost - This card requires you to have 1 Purist resource and 4 magic resources to play, and costs 4 Power. This card does not provide resources.

  • Notes - Since this is a card I designed for my Wastelands Shadowfist expansion, there is a more that the usual amount of thought put into it. Read on if you are interested:
    • There's an obvious combo with large-body/disadvantageous effect FSSs like Obsidian Mountain or Olympus Mons in the same set.
    • In tournament play this card would reduce your overall score, since having a card that modifies the victory condition is worth fewer points than actually having the FSS.
    • 4 Magic is very high, but the low faction resource count means you can splash this card into any other faction that uses magic, including Lotus, Four Monarchs, 7 Masters, Architects or even Dragons. This was done intentionally to give a little more multi-faction support to the Purists, who traditionally do not play well with others.
    • 4 Power cost is a little low for how strong this card could potentially be, however there is no protection from Character removal Events, and it's also possible to sacrifice a severely damaged Site to avoid it falling into enemy hands, resulting in a low Fighting score for the Avatar. In exchange for the (possibly) low cost, the card provides no resources.

render

Let me know if it's a problem posting a card from a set I'm already building. It's not that I can't come up with something different, it's just too good a match to ignore.

Edit: @Anuttymous: Regarding the judging - there's no way for you to know this, but damage redirection and immunity are fairly common in Shadowfist, so I couldn't make the Guardian too expensive. All it takes is a Yellow Sanctuary or Spirit Shield Generator and the effect is wasted, not to mention Characters like The Seven that are completely immune to it anyway. Still, I always appreciate feedback, and you were pretty much spot on with your comments.

Edit 2: Added render.

'Cause everyone else pretty much came up with the same thing already:

Sudden Cowardice

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the other entrants, but there's not much more we can do with it that hasn't already been done.

Contest closed. Judging will be up fairly soon. Sorry for the delay, had to rest up today after driving for 10 hours on the way back from Blizzcon.

Ok, I'm sorry I don't have time for the full write-up on each entry. There were a lot of good ones, and of course some problematic ones I'd love to give feedback on, but ultimately getting this contest moving again is more important, so long story short:

The winner is Avatar of Volcanic Fury by Nerameshu!

Having the power/toughness was my favorite of the options used to make the card feel like it's a living mountain. Then, being able to turn that power into a huge nuke makes me think it's erupting and shooting molten lava at stuff, which also felt really cool.

Other than that, I will mention that The1337 was the runner up, and also to those who made versions that were literally lands, while I loved that in concept, ultimately it needs to have some drawback, because all of the entries I saw were strict upgrades of basic lands, which simply shouldn't be the case. (and don't even get me started on a 7/1 haste on turn 2)
