Spirits of Giravost

Sazel Renasi was woken from her million-year slumber by the plane she was birthed to protect. The sentient plane charged her with her mission of protection and sent her to gather a coalition capable of mending and defending the plane. Spirits of Giravost is the second set in the Girad cycle, and it sees the plane being torn asunder by the extreme power the mana has there. Sazel’s only hope of defending the plane lies in activating the five becons of Giravost and opening the plane to the Blind Eternites.

This set is a mini-set containing 71 cards. It is designed to be the second set in the Girad block, between Birth of Giravost and Maelstrom Wake. It is my first serious attempt at a cohesive set. This set has been drafted in an 8-person draft and it plays very well for such a small set. The draft was SoG-SoG, since the size meant only two 'packs' were opened.

Mechanics

There are two new mechanics introduced, Planebound and Relic, as well as the return Storm and Cumulative upkeep.

Planebound represents the hold that the plane has on the spirits of its inhabitants, most of which never truly die. It is seen in Green, White, and Black mostly, sometimes in Blue, and never in Red:

Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)

Spoiler:
Gloryguard Sentinel 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Creature — Human Soldier (C)
Defender
Planebound (If this permanent is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, exile it. Its owner may cast it from exile.)
Forever ready to die.

Relic is printed on artifacts only at uncommon and up. The artifacts all have the Relic subtype. This represents the old magic imbued in objects that only reacts to other copies of the same relic.

Relic — <cost>: If you control another permanent with the same name, <action>.

Spoiler:
Eternity’s Snare 2 mana symbol
Artifact — Relic (U)
At the beginning of your upkeep, move an age counter from target permanent onto Eternity’s Snare.
RelicTap symbol: If you control another permanent with the same name, you may remove three age counters from Eternity’s Snare. If you do, destroy target creature.

Cumulative upkeep makes a return in this set, and represents the aging of a plane. Very few cards use it as a detriment, as the destabilization of the plane means that everything gets more powerful with age.

Spoiler:
Ravaging Firestorm Red mana symbol
Creature — Elemental (R)
Cumulative upkeep Red mana symbol
Haste, trample
Ravaging Firestorm gets +1/+0 for each age counter on it.
Ravaging Firestorm has double strike if it has five or more age counters on it.

Storm is back in this set as well. Great care has been taken to make sure that it is approached in a balanced way. It represents the out-of-control breakdown of mana in the plane.

All of the cards are great, but couldn't you use echo instead of cumulative upkeep? I have nothing against it - it's just that cumulative upkeep is a complicated mechanic that requires a lot of working with.

I would reword this to match these two cards. Also, a bit of a spelling error. You wrote "Sprit of Lights". When I'm sure you meant "Spirit of Lights".

I think that wording would be a bit better. Any body else wanna review this and see if I made any mistakes in the rewording? I underlined the changes.

I'm not sure if Sp(i)rit of Lights really works though... each spell doesn't "see" any of the copies of each other, so saying "in this way" doesn't quite work... And I'm not sure how to make this work.

Alright, echo it is. I just really really really like Child of Chaos. She's going to stay, so she might be a bit more clunky.

Here's the new wording on Spirit of Lights:

Quote:
Target attacking creature becomes blocked. If five or more creatures are being blocked by noncreature sources, destroy them.

The only part of that wording that isn't spot on is the "by noncreature sources." Wizards has, in the past, used things in this manner. Yes, we've never seen that phrase talking about blocking (see Tamanoa,) but it's intuitive, and everyone knows what it means. This is something Wizards would print. I know they haven't printed this before, but the "if ~ was kicked" was a new way to say "if you paid the kicker cost" and that went over swell.

Any ideas on flavor for the colors or ideas period? I appreciate the comments so far, keep the coming. A happy smile

Firstly, can I stick up for cumulative upkeep? If used intelligently, rather than as blanket negative, it's a fine tool. Admittedly that means it has narrower application than Echo so I guess it depends what you want to do with it. I wonder if you couldn't also spin CU by giving it an upkeep cap (etc)

Planebound - You spoiled Gloryguard Sentinel differently further down (different toughness). I do have a problem with this, same as I had with a similar idea elsewhere, since it's almost impossible for an opponent to get rid of the card. In constructed it's not such an issue, since presumably they are effectively overcosted. In limited, however, games tend to go on longer and being able to multiply recast permanents seems pretty annoying. There are various 'fixes'. One is to have a planebound cost that returns it to your hand, rather than directly to play. Another is simply leave them in a graveyard, but have a planebound casting cost. It does the same thing as current, but graveyard removal is an effective threat. It would mean you can be a bit more aggressive about costs too.

Relic - Can I suggest you instead use Relic counters? Yes, they can be messed with more easily, but they also solve memory issues.

Storm I have no problem with. Yes, it can get silly but that doesn't make it wrong.

I'm actually thinking about making relic a psuedo ability and just having it be an extra cost you can pay to add an effect to an activated ability from the same card. I had been using counters in the earlier version of relic, but I want the reminder text to be as succinct as possible. I mean, does a card really have to make you put a counter on it to remember something? It's a moot point, though since it's probably going to end up being pseudo anyway.

Planebound is supposed to make the permanent hard to get rid of, although I have since changed it to where it has to be put into the graveyard FROM the battlefield, so that milling yourself isn't an option. I've thought about including a cost on replaying it that would obviously be a bit steeper. It wouldn't give it haste, so it'd be a different flavor of unearth, really.

The idea of capping cumulative upkeep is one that I'd played around with and liked. I think I'm going to keep it around just based on some of the things I can do, but if it gets down near the end and I can do most of what I've done with Echo, I'll change it.

Finally, I have a mythic to spoil. I have a feeling this will cause some good debate over power level one way or another, and since I'm not sure myself, it can only help:

isn't it counterintuitive to have storm become *more* powerful when the storm count is already high enough to achieve those bonuses? Shocked

Anyway, these are neat.

Valid point. The mana in the plane is really old, really scarce, and really powerful. The plane doesn't let anyone find itself, as it is alive and quite antisocial. There are messengers from the plane (you'd call them demons,) and they know the ins and outs of how to use their mana.

So Demonic messengers from the plane + unstable mana = huge effect. That's how I see it, anyway. Of course, I don't know how you could have known this part of the backstory. Stick out your tongue

I quite like Maleficient Consuls. If you look at the different mana costs, none of them are overly strong compared to other cards at the same cost. Yes, you can storm, but if you are spending that much mana then any really strong card will be doing obscene things. Compare it to Minds Desire and you realise this card isn't in the same league. It needs testing though, and you might end up not wanting to let the player choose the card:
X can be no more than 4.
Draw X cards, then discard the top four cards of your library.
Storm

Unfortunately, the new version of Relic feels really clunky. Either make the second ability the first ability plus additional cost and effect, or think again. Maybe it gets the second option if you control a second Relic.

I like the idea of the relics working better in multiples, and it's the least clunky idea I've came up with or seen so far. As to the mythic, I've tested it for the last few hours in a suicide black and MBC, and I'm really happy with the card as-is.

Alright ladies, gentlemen, and elementals, may I present a new preview of this set which is about 1/2 done.

Let's start with a brief preview of the set's multicolored cards:

Spoiler:
This card shows off what Green/wite mana symbol does best in this set: defend. The creatures that white and green have access to either beat face or do a really good job at protecting yours. Remember, green and white are the two colors that are trying to protect the plane.
Hymn of Resistance 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Enchantment (U)
Creatures with defender have reach.
Whenever a creature with defender blocks, it gets +0/+X, where X is the blocked creature’s power.
Valor instilled with a pluck of a string.

Next we have a few cards you wouldn't normally expect green to have:

Spoiler:
I defend tapping lands being in green's color pie. They have zero to little tricks, and the case has been made for a card of this type many times. As far as flavor, green would rather see the forests of Giravost wither from their own magic than see it used by the agressors.
Dehydrate Green mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Instant (U)
When cast Dehydrate, draw a card.
Tap target land. It doesn’t untap during it’s controller’s next untap step.
Storm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell cast before it this turn. You may choose new targets for the copies.)

Next there is one of the better defenders of the set:
Force of Entanglement 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Creature — Elemental (U)
Defender, reach
X mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol, Tap symbol: Force of Entanglement deals X damage to each blocked creature with flying.
3/6

So far there have been three uncommons. Since "Defender matters" is a part of this set, it is seen a lot. However, you won't find any cards with or that reference defender at rare or mythic. I figure if you open a pack of my set, you don't want a wall.

Moving on, some interesting takes on classic in-color abilities:

Spoiler:
Say what you will of these cards, they have all sort of been seen before.
Planar Reclamation 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Enchantment (R)
Cumulative upkeep—For each player, exile a nonland permanent they control. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

Spin into Thought 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Instant (C)
Target creature's controller shuffles it into its owner's library, then draws two cards.
Draw a card.

Bound by Lineage Black mana symbol
Sorcery (U)
Target opponent sacrifices a permanent with the same name as target card in his or her graveyard.
Creations, machinations, and pithy magicks all fall prey to their lineage of weakness.

Enraging Flame Red mana symbol
Instant (C)
Enraging Flame does 4 damage to target creature.
The first creature to attack this turn gets +2/+0 until end of turn.

Next to last, we have a 2-part cycle:

Spoiler:
Light of Giravost 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Creature — Spirit (U)
Creatures you control with defender may block an additional creature.
Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)
2/3

Shadow of Giravost 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature — Spirit (U)
Creatures you control can’t be blocked by more than one creature.
Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)
3/2

Finally, we have the only planeswalker for the set. First, you're going to need to know her backstory:

Spoiler:
Sazel Renasi was a child of the plane. She was birthed by the plane to seek out others willing to help.

Sazel Renasi 2 mana symbolGreen mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Planeswalker — Sazel (M)
Starting Loyalty: 5

Before Giravost could ignite her spark, the entire plane began collapsing and became closed off. It was after the start of the collapse that she began her seemingly-futile mission of protecting the inhabitants of the plane.

Spoiler:
+1: Target permanent is indestructible until an ability of Sazel Renasi is activated.

With the aid of her mother Giravost, she was able to call forth long-used magicks to aid her in her quest.

Spoiler:
0: Return target green or white card from your graveyard to your hand.

As she discovered the ancient relics of Giravost that would be used to destroy it, she crushed them and their auras to dust before they could be used for a foul purpose.

Spoiler:
-1: Exile target artifact or enchantment.

As a last measure, the plane-mother Giravost granted her powers of great destruction that could heal the plane at the cost of everything else.

Spoiler:
-9: Destroy all other nonland permanents. You gain 2 life for each permanent destroyed this way.

Here is the full card:

Spoiler:

As usual, comments on anything is way more than welcome; it's encouraged.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to good criticism.

ahh you brought back Oblation! Except that you made it blue, and a "cantrip". That is great. You can draw three cards with it now.
Would you believe that my set has an Oblation spellshaper?

Enraging Flame - the first creature to attack this turn? What determines which one is first?

and I see you've redone Planebound. Very nice.

Thanks for the comments!

EDIT: Woah, another preview. I'm thinking everyone knows what card is this thing's daddy. It's also probably the fifty dollar card of the set.

The planebound is optional meaning it can be used as just a 0 mana cantrip, in which case wouldn't every deck automatically run 4? Maybe it can cost 1 instead, or have it so you draw a card "at the beginning of the next turn's upkeep" instead of right away.

At first I forgot that planebound is optional, because if it wasn't optional then the card becomes a lot more interesting. (it might still be overpowered though, not sure)

Mon, 2010-07-12 23:02
The Figment

Well, attackers are technically declared at the same time... the "first" creature to attack doesn't really make sense.

And yes, 0-cast auto-cantrips are usually bad ideas. Probably should cost 1 mana symbol; while the Mishra's Bauble fix does work, it would look out of place in a set that doesn't have other slowtrip effects.

Also:

Planebound reminds me a lot of dredge, but with MORE potential to be broken. OK, so it isn't self-synergistic, but you get the idea. Especially the scrolls. I agree. 2 or 3 cmc helps, or even making it a slowtrip.

There are several elementals out there Aurora. It would seem you don't pay that much attention to the movings of your own kind.

The scrolls are being costed at 1 mana symbol. It's a rare, and the Divining Top only broke a format because of several other things. I'd like an opinion on the planeswalker. I really hope she's not boring.

Picks-at-Flies

I really like the new Planebound and I also agree that compared to Top, the Scrolls are balanced (at least with a cost of 1).

Sazel... is tough. There's nothing inherently wrong with any of the abilities except that they don't fit together. The most obvious example is the Exile ability: there are three other abilities that deal with destruction then suddenly, whoosh, here comes an exile. At the very least, that should be destroy and moved to the +1 slot, with the indestructibility dropping to 0 and card retrieval to -1. Really, though, I would rethink the whole thing. What if you rewrote some abilities to give something to each player (or "you and target player")?

Enraging Flame seems a large step up from Flame Slash, a card already at the pinnacle of acceptable.

I love Hymn of Resistance. I worried for a moment then realised that it's hard to break it. Force is also good. Also Bound by Lineage is awesome.

Dehydrate: firstly, the name is almost taken in another colour. Secondly, I'm not sure it's green as written. I'm certainly sure that "GG: draw a card. Storm." is green. How about, instead of making it a cantrip, you add the line, "Add one mana of any colour that land could produce to your mana pool." That's much more green!

Glad you like Planebound. It's the first thing from MSE that I've ever actually playtested and I can say that I'm happy with how it turned out.

I'm thinking Enraging flame will be costed at 1 mana symbolRed mana symbol, for sure. The Hymn and Bound by Lineage are two of my best cards in my opinion, glad you liked both.

I really want the "Tap target land. Storm" on a Green mana symbolGreen mana symbol instant. It's a good trick and fits the flavor well. I had it cantrip ON CAST so that the card draw wouldn't be linked to Storm at all. Since it's a trick, I wanted the card to cantrip. Maybe I'll just cost it at Green mana symbolGreen mana symbol and have the "when you cast" just add Green mana symbolGreen mana symbol to the mana pool. Maybe, I'll see.

I think the Scrolls are done at 1 mana symbol; I couldn't be more happy with the design. It's a great use of Planebound from what I've playtested.

The thing I'm most concerned with is Sazel. I know I want to keep the first ability, but that's about it. No clue what else to do, as I can match the flavor of the PW to whatever the abilities do.

Thanks for the thoughts, Picks. I like the response and critique.

That statement is only partially true. Yes you can give it indestructibility with it's own ability each turn, but being indestructible doesn't make it so you stop taking damage, it only makes so that the permanent does not die as a result of lethal damage. So if the planeswalker was attacked by say a 5/5, 5 damage would be dealt to it, it would lose 5 loyalty counters and die as a state based action for being a planeswalker with no loyalty counters. Essentially indestructibility is mostly useless on a planeswalker, because it still has them take damage, and they can still die from having no loyalty counters.

Kiku is right, ralphie, but I think I'm going to put "another target permanent" on her anyway just for clarity. It means she's weaker against Vindicate and Maelstrom Pulse, but it saves people from having to know about state-based effects. I'm thinking that's the same sort of direction Wizards would take, so I'll do it as well.

I was thinking about this ability:

-X: Add X mana of any color to your mana pool. Put X loyalty counters on ~.

In addition to comments on that ability (it'd replace either the card return or artifact removal,) give me your opinions on this rephrasing:

-X: ~ adds X mana of any color to your mana pool. Put X loyalty counters on her.

It's technically wrong, but it is more flavorful.

Got some new stuff from the set I need feedback on:

Spoiler:
Lay to Rest White mana symbol
Instant (U)
Destroy target attacking creature.

-- Is this too powerful of an effect? It has to stay uncommon and costed at White mana symbol a la Path to Exile.

Radiant Shield White mana symbol
Creature — Human Soldier (C)
Cumulative upkeep 1 (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)
When Radiant Shield is sacrificed, you gain 2 life for each age counter on it.
2/3

-- This soldier is one of the intro commons that uses Cumulative upkeep in a positive, fun way. I think it's okay, but it might be undercosted by 1 mana symbol.

Blightwrither Black mana symbol
Creature — Zombie (C)
Cumulative upkeep—Put a -1/-1 counter on Blightwrither. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)
Black mana symbol, Sacrifice a land: Remove all counters from Blightwrither.
3/2

-- I'm at a loss. This has to be costed at Black mana symbol and stay common.

Pyroglyph 2 mana symbolRed mana symbol
Enchantment (C)
1 mana symbolRed mana symbol, Sacrifice Pyroglyph: Pyroglyph deals 2 damage to each creature.
2 mana symbolRed mana symbol, Sacrifice Pyroglyph: Pyroglyph deals 3 damage to each player.

-- I fear this card may be trying to do too much, but I really like it.

Djinn of Eternity 4 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Legendary Creature — Djinn (R)
Nonland permanents you control don’t untap during your untap step.
Tapped permanents your opponents control lose all abilities that aren’t mana abilities.
Everything is nothing to eternity.
4/4

-- Big splashy rare. No idea where this stands, want comments on this badly.

Destruction’s Calling 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbol
Sorcery (M)
Target player exiles a nonbasic card from his or her hand. Destroy all permanents with that name, then search that player’s graveyard, hand, and library for all cards with that name and exile them. Then that player shuffles his or her library.
Storm

-- This is meant to be an awesome Thought Hemorrhage. Needs to stay mythic and have Storm. Comments?

And for the fist time, pictures of cards you all have said don't suck:

Spoiler:

And a new rare that should spice up some gameplay:

Spoiler:
Sizon, Life to Chaos 1 mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Legendary Creature — Beast Avatar
1 mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol, Sacrifice Sizon, Life to Chaos: The next instant or sorcery spell you cast this turn without Storm has Storm.
Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)
3/3

And why not - the art too:

Lay to Rest is better than Condemn and Reciprocate.

Radiant Shield is awesome.

Blighwrither is odd because the 2nd counter kills it anyway, it might as well say "at the beginning of your upkeep put a -1/-1 counter on it" rather than have cumulative upkeep. Also I just noticed something. Its ability to remove counters is not very useful since it doesn't reduce the number of age counters on it.

Pyroglyph is neat, but seems overcosted. Should be Red mana symbol or 1 mana symbolRed mana symbol to cast.

dunno about Djinn of Eternity, maybe I'm not seeing it, but it seems pretty pointless since your opponents can still use tap abilities.

Destruction's Calling reminds me of Lobotomy. Except that your opponent gets to choose rather than you. That might counteract the added benefit of storm, and the fact that it can destroy things on the battlefield. A problem with this card is the wording, because what if the opponent has only basic land cards in hand. (it should probably make your opponent reveal his her hand)

how did you get such awesome artwork for Sizon. It fits perfectly.
(on second thought you probably chose the card's colors around the artwork. There is no other way)
Oh right, the card itself. It is awesome.

I knew you'd come through for me Wavy! Big smile

Lay to Rest has to be instant and has to cost White mana symbol. Might just do without it if I can't think of a drawback.

Blightwrither's ability that removes counters removes all counters from it, not just -1/-1 counters. It removes the age counters as well. A happy smile

Pyroglyph can be reduced to 1 mana symbolRed mana symbol, I agree.

Djinn of Eternity isn't even close to the same card anymore, but if an a Baneslayer Angel attacked and you had him out, she'd be a 5/5 with no abilities (I hope.)

Destruction's Calling now makes players reveal their hand. I could have swore I had that in there. Good catch.

Sizon's art was found after the card was designed, believe it or not. But the colors were based on the artwork. (The sac to give something storm effect, P/T, and CMC of the card and its ability as well as the name were all designed.)

Thanks for the feedback, I need it. A happy smile

Well check out Afterlife. Maybe your White mana symbol removal spell can give the opponent a creature token of some sort such as a 2/2 soldier, or two 1/1 soldiers.

Blightwrither - how did my brain not see that..
edit: I was going to suggest maybe making it a 1/1 with "sacrifice: Target creature gets -1/-1" and give it Planebound, but Phyrexian Denouncer already costs 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbol. (On the other hand there's Darkblast) Hmm.. maybe a vanilla 1/1 with Planebound?

As for Destruction's Calling, I just checked Lobotomy to see the rulings, and sure enough: 10/4/2004: "If the player has no cards in their hand, you still get to look through their deck, but you do not get to exile any cards." So I guess I way off to assume that Destruction's Calling should somehow prevent you from looking through my deck if I have no nonbasic cards in hand. So your card's wording might actually be fine as is.

This card already existed in my set file before you started talking about a -1/-1 creature with Planebound:

Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)
2/2
Spoiler:

So I guess I was a little ahead of you on that one. I put Lay to Rest's text at this:

"Destroy target attacking or blocking creature if you control a permanent with the same converted mana cost."

I'm thinking I like the token idea more. Plus, that means I get to make more tokens!

Finally, one more preview card. Remember that this set uses Cumulative upkeep on about 1/4th-1/3rd of the entire card selection.

Spoiler:
Eternity's Snare 2 mana symbol
Artifact - Relic (U)

What about this wording for Tempest Dreams: "Whenever a permanent is put into your graveyard from the battlefield, shuffle the card into your library."

Thoughtlifter could be 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol in my opinion

Firescale Broodspawn - positive cumulative upkeeps costs! Now that right there is how you do cumulative upkeep! I'm almost certain I've seen this done before (probably on a Wotc card) but it is just such a good idea. Great card.

Girad Skyterror - its 2 damage effect is so minor. Maybe it could be 4 damage instead. Or maybe instead it should say "target player" rather than "that spell's controller" so that way you can use instants on it such as Giant Growth (or the red giant growth) and deal your opponent 2 damage on the side. But I dunno maybe the card is fine as it is. Your opponent Doom Blades or Unsummons it, and is dealt 2 damage, and why not? 2 damage is better than nothing and already makes this dragon a better deal than it would be otherwise. That said I just realized it doesn't affect sorceries, just instants. Why is that? Why not trigger on any spells or ability that target it, instead of just instants?

Neonate - I can see this card taking over the world. I like it.

Woodland Caller - I just noticed that Planebound only gives you one opportunity to put the card on top of your library, and if you don't, it's gone forever. Are you sure this is right? In that case I would probably cost/balance your cards the same as if they didn't have planebound at all.

Visions from Within - NICE. Also rude. I wonder if this card is too powerful? Phyrexian Arena

Visions of Antiquity - This card seems underpowered and the double blue mana in its cost seems unjustified. Though I notice that Vampiric Tutor is banned in Legacy. On the other hand, Diabolic Tutor costs only 1 more mana than Visions of Antiquity, doesn't require blue, and puts the card into your hand. Maybe it could be Blue mana symbolBlack mana symbol sorcery unless that's too powerful. It could be 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbol though.

Thanks Wavy, that's exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for.

Changes per advice:

Spoiler:
Tempest Dreams re-worded. It now templates wonderfully. A happy smile

Thoughlifter's exile effect increased from four to five. Blue needs some powerful effects. Note that exiling cards or milling them from a library hurts planebound, so it's better than normal in this block.

Thanks for the compliment on the Broodspawn. I hope it's costed right.

Girad Skyterror now reads "Whenever Girad Skyterror becomes the target of a spell or ability, it does 2 damage to target player."

Neonate's supposed to be a bomb at uncommon for green. This is a pretty fast set, I've noticed.

Woodland Caller now searches for druid creatures and puts them on top of your library instead of producing a manadork. This is because I don't make cards with more than 60 words.

Visions from Within now draws you a card if the enchanted creature is untapped. I'm pretty sure that was my original design anyway.

Visions of Antiquity - Changed to 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbol per advice. Also, this isn't really a multicolor block, so the double mana was a bit nuts.

Any other comments on the uncommons? I'd like to hear anything anyone would like to say.

I don't understand this statement. Unless I miscounted the card is 50-something words. Also if you made it a library search effect, wouldn't that just make it more wordier, not less?

Second, do you seriously limit yourself to 60 words per card? That is interesting. I wonder how many of the cards in my sets exceed this limit.

New wording for the Caller:

"When Woodland Caller enters the battlefield, search your library for a Druid creature card, reveal it, and put it on top of your library.
Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)"

I limit myself to 25 words for commons, 45 words for uncommons, and 60 words for rares. Mythics can have any number, but it usually isn't many. This is to make sure that the different rarities are their normal level of complexity. Complex commons confuse new players, says WotC.

I do this because I have a tendency to want to put splashy effects on all my cards, which is bad design. Stick out your tongue

Great, that takes it over. >.< How's this:
"When Woodland Caller enters the battlefield, reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a creature or land card, put it into your hand.
Planebound (When this is put into a graveyard, exile it. At the beginning of your next upkeep, if it is exiled, you may put it on top of your library.)"

Well I don't like that it can whiff. Especially if I'm going to skip my draw step to planebound it.
Tough I just realized something. Using Planebound, you can stack multiple cards on top of your library, then use Caller's effect to get both your planebound cards back in the same turn.

Wait...can I have a link to that? Searches aren't doing me any good.

I'm a little late to making this comment, but I want to say that the 25/35/60 word limit sounds like a really cool idea. A happy smile

say Pichoro that just gave me a thought
is there a way to check how many words are on a card without having to count each word?

Yes, use the statistics page. There are stats for number of lines and number of words. Although I think the word count is actually every 5 characters, not every spaced word.

every 5 characters. huh.. I guess that's good enough.

I'm looking at Rainbowopolis stats atm. You know what.. I could use this to determine my rarities.
I have two cards in "66-70 words", a common and an uncommon. heh, heh.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if the set will not have enough commons if I do this.
Also the irony here is that commons need reminder text in more places than uncommons, and uncommons more than rares.
For instance on a common I will need Morph text, which could easily put them over the 25/30 word limit.

Though if 5 characters count as a word, then I should increase my word limit to account for that, right?
And maybe increase it a little more on top of that, to account for my depth and sophistication.

Or stop making excuses for yourself and make some less complicated cards. Winking smiley

I just wouldn't count reminder text toward the word count.
Of course, I don't really bother actually trying to make proper sets, more just whatever random card ideas cross my mind, so...I guess I'm not really the best qualified to speak on the matter Stick out your tongue

according to MSE, this land has 31-35 words in it.

Quote:
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
Morph 2 (You may cast this face down as a 2/2 creature for 3. Turn it face up any time for its morph cost.)

actually it does have exactly 31 words. So maybe MSE knows how to count words?

I also see that MSE does not count flavor text in its word-count statistics. (thank goodness!)

but still in this case maybe the limit is too harsh on reminder text for keywords such as Morph.

I only use reminder text on commons and uncommons. Sometimes an uncommon slips through for templating purposes. Rares and Mythics never gets reminder text. To help with this, I try to put the complicated keywords on a few commons so they show up. I'm pretty sure Wizards does this for that exact reason.

Speaking of not making complicated commons, how would I word this?

"Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains defender until end of turn if it isn’t attacking."

Could I say "Target nonattacking creature gets +1/+1 and gains defender until end of turn."?
