Hello there, Mini-Plane set designers. This is a contest devised specifically for YOU (sorry, everyone else). Pichoro has asked me to run this, the Comprehensive Design Competition, as an impartial judge, since I'm not taking part, and am somewhat of an experienced designer myself.

This is a little contest that I have devised in order to give away ONE mythic rare upgrade to the team who wins overall. This, as I'm sure you're aware from previous such awards, allows you to upgrade one of your rares to a mythic rare in the Mini-Plane collaborative set. Again, sorry to people who aren't taking part, but this is a specific contest to give away one of the last remaining Mythic Rare slots.

Now, what's the format of this competition? Unlike some of the other games in which these mythic rares have been given away, the Comprehensive Design Competition tests a wide variety of card design and set design skills. Each team works, as a team, on the challenges that I post in this thread. After 4 rounds, 4 different challenges, the team I judge to have submitted the best work overall is gifted the Mythic rare. Now, how you split up the work within your team is of no interest to me; you could alternate doing the challenges, or work on them all together, or just let one person do it all, but your team needs to have submitted all 4 entries by the closing date in order to stand a chance of winning the Mythic.

Now, how do you submit entries? Well, all the entries need to be sent to (sorry about the reused email address), and every entry needs to have your team name on it. I'll emphasise that, since I don't want to have to be chasing entries around; EVERY email you send to that address has to have your team name on it, preferably in the subject line. These are the team names i'll be using, stolen from the first-post of the main set design thread:

Team "Sky Grove"
Team "Undead"
Team "Wolf Haven"
Team "Chaotic"
Team "Pilgrimage"
Team "Angrium"

Now, how are the individual rounds going to work? Well, when I'm ready to post the next round, I'll post it both here, and as a reminder in the main thread. From that point on, you are free to submit entries for that challenge. Now, since I don't intend for this competition to take too long, I won't necessarily wait for all of the teams to submit before posting the next round. Don't worry, that doesn't mean you've missed the deadline; it just means that you can also start working on the next round. I hope that I won't have to post a final deadline, but if it drags on too long once all 4 rounds have been posted, then I will. Ideally, I'll simply start the judging once every team has submitted all four rounds.

The format of each round will be quite simple; I'll post a simple design challenge (if any of you remember The Great Designer Search, it will be a similar style to that), and some pointers about how I'm going to mark it. You are then free to submit your entry for that challenge, right up until the final deadline (if one is necessary) and yes, that means you can wait until all four challenges are posted before submitting anything. Nevertheless, I will allow revisions to your entry up to a certain extent; don't feel like you have to hold them all back to get the most time possible to work on them; submitting as soon as you are pretty sure you are done is preferable, as it will, to some extent, let me gauge the progress you are making! I will be marking down in the thread which teams have submitted entries to which rounds, although the entries themselves will be kept secret until after the competition is over.

Once all six teams have either submitted entries to all four rounds or conceded, I will judge the quality of each teams submissions. The team I judge to have done best overall will win the mythic rare slot for their plane. Just a quick note: your submissions don't need to be cards from your set, or even remotely related; this is just a card design competition for the purposes of handing out the mythic!

If you have any questions about the format of the competitions, feel free to ask here in the thread.

Once all of the teams have registered their acknowledgement of this contest, I'll post the first challenge. Participating designers, once you've read and understood this, just post an okay in this thread.

I'm interested in this contest to improve my skill. So I have to giving my submission at your e-mail, not at this thread, right? And should I need my partner's (a.k.a.guitarweep's) confirmation to join this thread?

Just to clarify, I'll post the first round when at least one person from each team has posted in this thread. That only leaves Team Angrium and Team Pilgrimage at time of posting.

I'm all over this. I even cracked my knuckles and wiggled my fingers before typing this, like some sort of keyboarding maestro. That means serious business is afoot.

Seriously, though, I'm looking forward to this. If Lord of 13 doesn't pipe up, I'm willing to take the first challenge on my own.

OK, the first challenge is:

Round 1: Top-down Design
This first challenge is simple - design a card for this piece of art:

Spoiler:

It is by Patrick Jones, and please include this artist reference on renders. Your submission should be in the form of 1 render emailed to the address in the first post - remember to include your team name and forum handle in all communications via that address.

Hints on judging:
- I've deliberately picked a fairly broad piece of artwork, both colourwise and typewise.
- Clean, simple 'common' designs can hold just as much merit as a well-costed 'rare' bomb.
- Although I've asked for a render (this is the MSE forums after all), the quality of the render isn't really a point I will be judging on (no need to go all out on fancy templates), although please export as png for my sanity's sake.
- Nevertheless, incorrect templating is no excuse; misspellings and bad layout or grammar will lose marks.
- If you feel the card should have flavour text, add it, and it will be taken account of.
- Cards that would not work outside of an extreme unnormal environment will be marked down; top-down designs don't have the luxury of being cornerstones of block mechanics and suchlike.
- An innovative design will be worth more than, for instance, a disenchant clone.

This round basically challenges your skill in taking a piece of artwork and designing a card around it, from concept to render. The primary trait I'm looking for is a flavour that feels like the art was designed for it, rather than the other way around.

You'll need a team (I don't think Innuendo and I really need more teammates to be honest), and each team should submit as a group. That's part of the conditions I had when asking Idle Muse to judge; this is a team activity. A happy smile

There is no deadline at the moment. I will probably post the next round sometime early this coming week, and see how we go from there. Although I'd like a number of entries by then, you don't need to submit it until the final deadline which is still hazily in the future. Put it this way; you could consider all the rounds as happening simultaneously, to be handed in by the final deadline, except, their announcements are staggered in order to make it easier to work on them in order.

Since the final portfolio will be judged overall rather than by a strict round-by-round basis, this just made sense to me.

Can I just clarify:

Idle Muse wrote:

Doesn't that mean they need to come from an extreme, unnormal environment, i.e. as quirky and block specific as possible? Is that a typo?

Mon, 2009-03-02 14:01
Idle Muse
Idle Muse's picture

No, it makes sense grammatically to me... Take Steamflogger Boss, for instance; that would be an example of a cad that needs unusual new support to make it a 'good' card, so would be marked down in this contest. It's a pretty good idea for this round to design a card that could slot into pretty much any expert-level set without being too problematic. You can assume some level of block co-operation, so for instance you could make it a hybrid card, but you can't assume that the set that it would drop into is a massively alternative block, like Mirrodin or something.

And how is it simpler to send a set file than a render? Renders are easy...

Yeah it's just that my computer doesn't really do renders that well, and attaching a set file to an email is still pretty simple. I see Monkey's post, it's just that it was saying he'll do it if no one else does, without any kind of confirmation that he's got it under control. Sorry, but I can be a bit of a control freak at times.

From a purely logical standpoint, you'll do best if you have the whole team's input on entries, so communication between members of your team is a good idea.

You can attach and send an mse set, but be aware I will simply open it and export the one card that should be inside straight away, and count that image as the submission. Since you are working in teams, it should however be possible to find ONE member of the team that can export the render, and this is preferrable.

Aurora Illumina: I came up with a few preliminary ideas. I'd rather not give my email, so I'm just going to post them here in a spoiler. I can't physically stop anyone else from looking, but I trust in personal honor and all that good stuff.

If you're not Aurora, DO NOT OPEN!

Spoiler:

Seriously, if you're not Aurora, don't look.

Spoiler:

I had two ideas when I saw the art.

Idea 1: some kind of red hose. the wizard in the picture is trying to cast a burn spell, but hurts himself by mistake.

Burnt Fingers 1U
Enchantment (U)
Whenever an opponent plays a red spell, that player loses 1 life.

And a few possible flavor texts to go with it:
- Remember children: don't play with fire.
- The young wizard learned his very first lesson: fire hurts.
- I don't care how pretty it looks, don't try grabbing the fireball.

Idea 2: some type of counter involving life loss. the wizard in the picture is grabbing the fireball and snuffing it out of existance: a very painful process.

Repress 1U
Instant (U)
Counter target spell. You lose life equal to that spell’s converted mana cost.

maybe make it rare and make it repeatable. i think the life loss keeps it fairly safe. do you think it needs to be more expensive?

Voidmage Master 2UU
Creature - Human Wizard (R)
2U, T: Counter target spell. You lose life equal to that spell's converted mana cost.
2/2

if you've got better names, better flavor text, or better ideas period, please don't hesitate to share.

Spoiler:
It seems that I don't want to give my email out either... The third card is my favorite of those three. I guess you could send the third card to Idle Muse. I'll send Muse my email so that we can communicate without doing this weird spoiler stuff.

Some basic flavor edits (edit further if necessary):

Spell Dissolver 2UU
Creature - Human Wizard (R)
2U, T: Counter target spell. You lose life equal to that spell's converted mana cost.
"I can't let that happen at all costs."
