Deck boxes

The other day I bought the duel deck eleves vs. goblins decks. These premade decks didn't come with deck boxes so I decided to make some. I scanned in reverse white side of an old deck box to get something to work with.

Spoiler:

Once I had a blank deck box I added color and images to it:

Spoiler:

I was wondering it this could be made it to a template type thing with aspects like;

  • insert picture
  • gold mana rings to show colors in deck
  • insert name
  • changeable deck box color/design
  • writeable text for sides and back
  • mana pictures on top of box

would this be possible in any way?

the second image doesn't work, and im sure it can *since it one flat image, but im not the expert* aslo could you maybe draw a blank one *w/o MTG logo* with straight edges?

edit:

Spoiler:

Found it on google, but it looks bad

I doubt it is the sites that have the problem; sounds like the image is corrupt. If you can open it, do so, and resave as something different (like png or bmp). Then resave as jpg...

I think this is quite possible. There are three obstacles that I can think of. One, the Magic: the Gathering logo. Featuring that on the box might just cross the line to peeving Wizards off just a tad. However, the sides of existing boxes do state that the White mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbolTap symbol images are just as trademarked as the logo. So it may be that they'd only be as miffed as they are over the program as-is, which is not at all. Still, I'm wary.
Two, a template like this would easily be three times the size of existing templates, which will at the very least shrink the card list window down to nothing. This might not be terrible, as honestly, how many of these will you have in a single file? It can also be avoided by changing the zoom setting under display preferences, but changing the zoom between files would be tedious.
Three, how one changes the box design, box color, and set logo is perhaps a major issue. I have some ideas for how to implement this stuff, but nothing I'm sure of.

Anyway, I think it's possible and hope these obstacles can be overcome, as I'd like to see this become a reality.

This could be done really easily, I would think.

Some cool stuff could even be done with an option to fade the edges or art. Multiple image fields could be used for each side of the box. Oooh.

Here's a quick mock-up I made of how I think this template could be implemented:

Spoiler:

Perhaps 'hasty' is a more appropriate word than 'quick.' I'd probably drop the "AGE 13+" bit entirely. It's not something MSE boxes would need. Oh, and I couldn't find a hi-res Planeshift symbol, so I had to enlarge a small one. (Hence the rough edges.)

Anyway, I might try to start some work on this sometime this week.

EDIT: I've started putzing around. To show for it, I have this more polished mock-up that more closely resembles the final template results.

I've never done anything like this before where do we start? Also when I previously made these in paint the scanning process left a a large area of blue surrounding the image. I think this should be gotten rid of to save on ink costs.

How should we go about finding or making a better blank template?

I'm on the case. I've been measuring a dismantled deck box and am working on a blank. The coding bit might take me a good deal longer. I'll post the blank when it's ready, though, no worries. It could be as early as tonight.

Spoiler:
It's at 130dpi, and if printed as-is at that resolution should be just the right size. I'll test this and update with my results.

I thought I'd update with a chronicle of my trials. The box comes out perfect (see below) if and only if you print it at 130dpi. This requires a program like Paint.net, The GIMP, or something from the Adobe suite. Microsoft Paint won't cut it at all, and neither will Windows Picture & Fax Viewer or printing directly from Internet Explorer or Firefox. Naturally, once the template is made this will be a non-issue. But for now, intrepid readers should keep this in mind while attempting to make boxes of their own.

And now, because pics or it didn't happen...

Spoiler:
Notice that you'll have to trim the corners of the flaps a bit. Straight edges are a pain to tuck in.

Good luck, and happy boxing!

monkeychewtoy I really like your job you did on your deck box design and template and so i printed out the template and it works but the cards have no room to shake around. Dont get me wrong here you did a very good job but I think if you made the box a slight bit bigger it would be a lot better

Fri, 2008-08-29 04:36

How many cards are we talking here? Over 90? I had a sixty card deck and an insert in mine, (courtesy of Eventide's Sidestep theme deck,) and there was plenty of room. I suppose it might make a difference, too, whether you cut inside or outside of the lines. I probably should have specified that this template is meant to be cut outside the lines.

Just like Wizards' boxes, there are only so many cards you can put in a box. This one will probably tear before you slide the 100th card in. If there's demand for boxes for Elder Dragon Highlander, I'll make some measurements and put up another blank. The same goes for core set-sized boxes that fit 60 cards snugly.

In the mean time, I have to get around to putting up a trimmed-corners version.

Cool, now if and when the ARC templates get done and enter my massive spoiler to it. I can print card boxes for premade card sets for like my avenegers box sets: Box 1) Avengers Assemble! 2) Secret Avengers 3) Lightning Justice (T-Bolts) 4) Face of Evil (MoE) 5) Deception (MoE). Looking forward to showing these boxes soon after ARC template is done.

1) If you read the post at the link provided, they are optional - you have to turn them on via the style tab. I made them optional for non-MTG boxes.
2)The top-most flap folds inside the box - it's a waste of ink to print a pattern on it in my opinion, so I left it out. It's a personal design choice.
3) Again, read the post please. The font color can be changed via the style tab.

I should read things more carefully shouldn't I.

One thing could you make it so there can be more than one line of text for the deck name?

In example:

instead of:

Karns Might

this:

Karns
Might

And also could you have the option to have a picture for the deck name?

It would be much appreciated

yes i was talking to artfreak your template is good too cizzle.

Would it be possible to have solid color backgrounds? someone could just use the color picking thing that is used on card borders. this would give a multitude of simple backgrounds.

Multi-lined name: No, that's in Cizzle's game file, which I won't edit.
Image instead of deck name: Yes. I editted my style so that the title on the front can be an image instead. You can turn it on via the styles tab.

Open the file 'style' found in DeckBox-cbg.mse.style with Notepad. Then scroll down until you see:

Spoiler:
############################ Alternate box scripting
extra card field:
	type: choice
	name: my deck box
	choice: black
	choice: blank
	choice: clouds
	choice: metal
	choice: parchment
	choice: swirls dark
	choice: swirls light
	initial: blank
	save value: true
	identifying: false
	show statistics: false

Add before the initial line your choice... so say you were adding a 'lightning bolt' choice. If that were the case, it would look like this:
Spoiler:
############################ Alternate box scripting
extra card field:
	type: choice
	name: my deck box
	choice: black
	choice: blank
	choice: clouds
	choice: metal
	choice: parchment
	choice: swirls dark
	choice: swirls light
	choice: lightning bolt
	initial: blank
	save value: true
	identifying: false
	show statistics: false

Next, scroll down until you see:

Spoiler:
	############################ Alternate box scripting
	my deck box:
		left: 0

		height: 523
		z index: -1

			clouds: clouds.png
			metal: metal.png
			parchment: parchment.png
			swirls dark: swirls.png
			swirls light: swirls2.png
		visible: { styling.flat_color_boxes!="yes" }

...and add you choice to the choice images with a link to the file that should be placed in the same folder as the style file. So again, if you were adding lightning bolt, it would look like:
Spoiler:
	############################ Alternate box scripting
	my deck box:
		left: 0
		top: 0
		width: 590
		height: 523
		z index: -1
		render style: image
		popup style: in place
		choice images:
			black: black.png
			blank: blank.png
			clouds: clouds.png
			metal: metal.png
			parchment: parchment.png
			swirls dark: swirls.png
			swirls light: swirls2.png
			lightning bolt: lightningbolt.png
		visible: { styling.flat_color_boxes!="yes" }

Then save, not save as, and it's done. Reload MSE2 and you should be able to choose your image while in my style.

thank you artfreak it works great.

few things

  • on real magic deck boxes the mana rings are on the part where you have title/tite image
  • on the mana rings under 3 color and 4 color all the colors combos arent listed. (such as green black and red)

edit: is there an easy way to learn how to code and stuff? I would like to be able to contribute more than just ideas.

edit 2: Just had an idea: insetead of having a graphic for each set of mana rings (something like 50 images) why not just have the mana bar split into 5 different dropdown menus. There would only be ten graphics then (1 full color and one dimmed for all 5 colors) which will be kinder to those with dial-up as well as reducing clutter in the data file.
