Ninja'd... I will work on the new challenge tomorrow, if it's still active.
"All science is either physics or stamp collecting." [Ernest Ruthenford]
"In man we all pray!" [Tony Hadley]
Like fire, hellfire, this fire in my skin, this burning desire...
Scoranthe Stormrider: 8/10 Because I was expecting a white card.
Uprisen Demon

, Exile target creature with converted mana cost
or less. Spend only black mana on
.
Creature - Demon Mythic
5/6
:EDIT:
Just ninja'd? So close!
No, you weren't ninja'd. Elmdor was ninja'd by me.
You can call me DH.
These are the rules. Read them.
Well... either way does my card count? My Uprisen Demon? I got so close
Your card counts, frederickwaffles. Post a new challenge.
Ok thanks. I want to see... lets see... A goblin card that costs

.
EDIT: ninja'd

@Uprisen Demon
) but remember it's because the challenge is so <EXPLETIVE> hard. A white demon? But how?
I could care less about the balance of this card. The assignment, however, is what I'm going to focus on. The assignment of creating a white demon is difficult, since a demon is a magically created embodiment of black mana. The same is true for the white angel, which is the embodiment of white mana. Fallen Angel works because it has been corrupted by black mana or something. I expected to see a 'forgiven', 'purified' or 'arisen' demon, but this demon still plays with black mana, and it does not explain itself throughoutly. I'm going to give it a worse grade (Although I don't grade things in here, I just talk about them.
Boarswine Nurturer

Creature - Goblin Shaman
Beast creatures you control get +1/+1.
Sacrifice a Beast creature: You gain life equal to its toughness.
He watches them for you, he feeds them for you, and he eats them for you.
3/3
Next challenge: Make any iconic creature for green. The iconic creatures for the other colors are white angels, blue sphinxes, black demons and red dragons. It must be rare and shouldn't trespass on common creature types.
lord_joakim, don't swear.
You can call me DH.
These are the rules. Read them.
I rate boarswine nurturer 7/10. I like how with 3/3 beast creature tokens circulating, you can use a goblin and pump them up to 4/4, honorary green fatties, even with the "sac: gain life" effect that belongs to a lot of them. I would love to play these in my token deck along with some mighty leaps. Also, swearing is NOT good.
I did'nt quite understand your challenge, am I supposed to make a creature that represents green as a color, or a green sphinx, angel, etc.?
I'll try the former.
Lord of the Beasts

Creature-- Avatar
~'s power and toughness are each equal to the number of creatures you control plus 5.
, sacrifice ~ : You gain 3 life.
Trample
*+5/+5*
OK, since all but one challenge I last posted was used, Shakespeare challenge time! (look at my last post, on page 45.)
Cthulhu eats YER MIND SOUL AND BRAIN.
He also makes for a kickbutt eldrazi deck.
I'm not for erasing the challenge of the Shakespeare, I just don't think it's magic related enough. How bout a legendary like Shakespeare? Or make Shakespeare into a legendary?
@Cthulhupwn - You might want to check out this link to know what iconic and characteristic means. An avatar is alright, but green's problem at the moment is that green doesn't really have a creature that can showcase the color. They're playing with Hydras, but they're very hard to design.
Wurms! Wurms! Wurms! Very green iconic. All I can say!
1. They're almost never anything but green.
2. They are tough and powerful.
3. They are ferocious at times.
4. They are natural.
Need I say more?
@frederickwaffles:
Not magic enough? Lots of things in this game are not related to magic besides the fact that they are cards. There was a santa claus card, and donnie darko to boot. There were even some historical figures.
BUT the challenge was DEFINITELY NOT to make SHAKESPEARE HIMSELF!
I don't get why Shakespeare would be easier or more magic related than making a magic card for Prospero or Richard the 3rd.
@lord_joakim:
ah...
I see.
Cthulhu eats YER MIND SOUL AND BRAIN.
He also makes for a kickbutt eldrazi deck.
Lord of the Beasts: 0/10 Doesnt fit the challenge and is strangely designed.
Mercutio

Legndary Creature-Human Warrior
When ~ is sent to the graveyard, destroy all creatures.
3/3
"A curse on BOTH your houses!"
A remade version of a card I previously posted.
Next: Make a purple card showcasing what purple is REALLY about.
@New Kind of Christ:
Please read the previous posts before rating.
You see, I misunderstood the challenge.
also...
you can discard-effect mercutio for free wrath with a bonus probably tied on.
Cthulhu eats YER MIND SOUL AND BRAIN.
He also makes for a kickbutt eldrazi deck.
Missunderstandings don't change the fact that you failed to complete the challenge asked. I read everything.
And unless you answer to the new challenge, you shouldn't be rating.
Sorry, NKoC, but no one's responded to your challenge in 3 days. I need to make a new one.
New Challenge: Make a red Cleric.
You can call me DH.
These are the rules. Read them.
Mercutio: 9/10. The only real flaw is the wording of the ability, since (as noted) it can be discarded to nuke critters for free (just wait till you're holding 8 cards).
Einaki, the Mad Bishop

: ~ deals 1 damage to each creature, player and planeswalker.
Legendary Creature - Human Cleric
Vigilance, first strike
1/3
"Everywhere! I am surrounded by the unworthy, those who do not... cannot see the true will of the gods!"
-- Einaki, the Mad Bishop
Next challenge: You are a 'walker who stumbles upon a new world. Design a card that encompasses your first reaction or first experience there.
Online dictionaries abound. It's time to start using them.
Einaki, the Mad Bishop: 8/10. For this price, I'd like to see more power on my first-striker, and I don't like seeing "planeswalker" written in text boxes. I think it would still be a powerful card even if I was forced to choose between damaging the opponent or their planeswalker, and I'd like to not whack my own 'walkers in the face.
A solid concept and design, though, and I'm not going to nitpick red vigilance.
Grandiose Display

Sorcery
Tap all creatures. They don't untap during their controller's next untap step. You may put a green creature card from your hand onto the battlefield.
“I have walked many worlds, and seen the grandeur of many beasts. But I still feel nothing but awe in the presence of the Nayan behemoths.”
—Garruk Wildspeaker
A sort of oblique response to the challenge, instead representing Garruk's first impression of Naya and its wondrous beasts.
Next: What would it take for a Goblin to go from red-aligned to mono-white?
September 21, 2007: Monkeychewtoy predicts monocolored hybrid cards, calls them "Ridiculous."
Purified Goblin

Creature - Goblin Monk
Defender
First Strike
2/4
Next: I would like to see... a planeswalker who's ultimate sacrifices her/himself. It can't be modeled after a already made legendary.
Don't forget to rate the last card
"I will do science to it." - Kimiko “Thunderbolt” Ross
"I can wire anything directly into anything - I'm the professor!" - Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
"Our tanks can't hold aggro of that magnitude!
Ok. Grandoise Display: Good card, but I don't see how it relates to a planeswalker. 5/10
4.5/10 You have a basic idea, but the card doesn't show how it became a mono-white, and it doesn't feel at all like a Goblin. Defender? More toughness than power? I just don't see Goblin in that.
Hurin, the Savior

Planeswalker - Hurin
[+1] Regenerate target creature. This ability can be used as an instant.
[-1] Target creature is indestructible until end of turn.
[-7] Sacrifice ~, if you do, all creatures you control are indestructible until your next upkeep.
[4]
"I found a people, oppressed, enslaved, bereft of hope and love. They are now my wards, and I will do anything to save them."
- Hurin
Next Challenge: A card that gives your opponents life (but not you) and damages you (but not your opponents) but you would still want to play.
Fear the newbie
DeviantArt
Acari vs Klatil: Duel Decks: Rough draft finished and in the process of revealing for feedback
Hurin - I like what you're trying to do, making a saving, self-sacrificing planeswalker, and he is properly colored. But as a planeswalker, he isn't very neatly designed. He's actually horrible. So I wouldn't score this good.
Your challenge is tough.
Flesh Injection

Enchantment
~ is indestructible.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 2 life and target opponent gains 2 life.
When an opponent has 40 or more life, sacrifice ~. If you do, you gain control of all permanents that player controls.
"Take my flesh, eat my bread, and my soul will be truer than yours to yourself."
Next challenge:
Make me a Minotaur. Show me why it should be more important as a red creature.
Flesh Injection - I actually like this from a design standpoint. All permanents is a little over the top though, I give it an 8/10.
Now to the challenge:
Talruum Chieftain

less to cast.

Creature - Minotaur Warrior
Minotaur spells you cast cost
Minotaur creatures you control get +1/+2 and have haste.
Talruum chieftains called for blood, and it is usually what they received.
3/3
Next challenge - Create a planeswalker with an ultimate that can't be activated unless another card makes it possible. (usually this will mean no add loyalty ability, with starting loyalty less than needed for ultimate, but could be anything)
jrzman set hub
“The path to knowledge is locked. To get in you either have the right key, or be lucky enough to be able to pick the lock.”
Minotaur of the Forbidden Maze

Creature - Minotaur Warrior
Shroud
When ~ enters the battlefield, exile 2 target creatures. When ~ exits the battlefield, return those creatures to their owner's hand.
3/3
Next: a 7/7 that costs
(EDIT: DARN YOU FREDERICKWAFFLES!! What happens now?... Help please?)
Talruum Chieftain- This is a good card if you're playing a bunch of Minotaurs in a deck. Otherwise, its a 4/5 for 4... actually thats pretty good. 8.5/10
Brain of Hexlore 1UB

: Draw a card, then discard a card. Hexlore, the Remade gets +3/+0 and trample until end of turn".
Planeswalker -- Hexlore
!: The planeswalker rule doesn't apply to ~ if there is exactly one planeswalker card named Body of Hexlore on the battlefield, under your control.
+1: Scry 3.
+1: Target player discards a card.

Next Challenge: Make B/U/G legendary creature with an ability for each color.
Current Projects
Secret Project Beta - Status Report: Blank slate! Still working on the base set.
Veyril - an RTD RPG Adventure - Status Report: Prologue! Round 1 has begun!
Ok.
First off, Frederickwaffles, you have to rate the entry before you. (That would be me
)
Secondly, k1l1 you didn't do anything wrong. This game is very much first come, first serve, so Frederickwaffles was a little too late.
The Hexlores: This is a very messy way to deal with the challenge. It does too much. It's interesting how one of them is a beatstick beatifier while the other is a control helper, but that doesn't decomplicate the final token. The last token could just as easily have been
or
. For the rest of the challenge, I think you nailed it - somehow. But this wouldn't go for modern Magic, really. Sadly.
Something like mentioning the planeswalker/legend rule outside Mirror Gallery - and especially without reminder text, albeit that could be fixed - shouldn't be done. The minigame this creates is good. (Attack either one to screw with the plan while hoping the other doesn't grow too big to ultimate.) The implementation isn't really top notch, you're trying to do too much with these cards. The token is too messy. Dual hybrid on a token's activated ability? Really?
Hava'za, the Preying Serpent

: Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains forestwalk until end of turn.

: Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains islandwalk until end of turn.

: Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains swampwalk until end of turn.
Legendary Creature - Snake
3/3
Next challenge: Alright, you made a minotaur lord. Now make me an iconic minotaur common that fights under that lord! Show me how minotaurs are different from goblins.
Hav'za: I really love this card. P/T might be a little high, and I would consider restricting each ability to creatures of the matching color, but otherwise I would love to play this in an EDH/Commander deck.
Talruum Wildswing -

Creature - Minotaur Barbarian
Double strike
Talruum Wildswing must be blocked by exactly two creatures if able.
2/2
The Magic Barbarian's version of D&D's Cleave
Next Challenge: Make a mythic rare Elk!
"I will do science to it." - Kimiko “Thunderbolt” Ross
"I can wire anything directly into anything - I'm the professor!" - Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
"Our tanks can't hold aggro of that magnitude!
windandfire - 9/10 It's a good card, the only reason I'm not giving it a perfect score because it seems as though the only reason it is common is to meet the challenge. This card just doesn't "feel" common. It's a great card, just the challenge brought it down.
Thunder Stag

Creature - Elemental Elk
Haste, flash, protection from blue
When Thunder Stag enter the battlefield, counter target instant spell.
2/2
Next - Make a food item. For brownie points (no pun intended), make it a creature!
Proud member of [Soundtrack]
I can't find any problems with thunder stag, 9/10.
Etherium Egg

: Put a 0/1 white Homunculus artifact creature token onto the battlefield.
Artifact Creature- Egg
Sacrifice ~: Gain 6 life.
Sacrifice ~: Put 3 +1/+1 counters on target homunculus.
defender
0/3
Challenge: Make an Ugin Planeswalker. (I hope you all know who he is.)
Cthulhu eats YER MIND SOUL AND BRAIN.
He also makes for a kickbutt eldrazi deck.
An egg is a pretty uncreative workaround to making a food item. I was thinking more along the lines of a ham with the Boar type or a plate of hot wings with the bird type. Or maybe a plate of cookies that could be equipped for some awesome bonus. But whatever.
Proud member of [Soundtrack]
Is it too late to rate (rhyme not intended)? I was going camping so I couldn't get to it. Sorry!
@frederickwaffles: You only get to rate when you post a card. Thus, in this thread, the person who gives the challenge is rarely the person to judge it's fulfillment.
Etherium Egg: Solid card, a few minor things though: When you use an egg on mtg, usually people want to see it hatch. I like the way you took with "to hell with hatching. I'm hungry.", but I'm not perfectly sure I understand why it sprouts homonuculi. Also one technical thing (which is just me nutpicking, really), the defender would be above the other abilities.
Ugin, Spirit Dragon

,
,
,
or
. If you do, add
to your mana pool.”
Planeswalker - Ugin
+1: Target creature is colorless, loses all abilities and gets +3/+3 until end of turn.
-2: Target creature gets -X/-X, where X is the number of colored mana symbols in it’s cost.
-5: You get an emblem with “any time you could activate a mana ability, you may pay
Starting Loyalty: 3
So, yes, this is the colorless Spirit Dragon that helped sealing away the Eldrazi. The first ability represents cleaning away all traces of color within a creature. As this also washes away the abilities that color granted (oh, and any other too), this may be a good or a bad thing.
The second one is just a general dislike of color, and the ultimate grants loads of colorless mana. Have fun.
Next:
An aggressive creature with a absurdly good price/power ratio. In order to do that, use a drawback that we don't see every day.
Ugin, Spirit Dragon: the only thing I don't like of it is the ultimate, which isn't game-winning enough for a planeswalker that costs five mana. Its other abilities are fine; maybe the -2 could be -1/-1 for each color of target creature.
A creature I made a lot of time ago fits the challenge perfectly. I wanted to post it but I always forgot to do...
Syobon

Legendary Creature -- Cat
When Syobon is dealt combat damage, you lose the game.
4/4
It comes from a videogame named Syobon Action, which is like Super Mario but with a cat as the main character; it's filled with traps like enemies that appear out of nowhere and power-ups that kill the player, everything is deadly.
Next challenge: make a legendary Cyclops creature.
"All science is either physics or stamp collecting." [Ernest Ruthenford]
"In man we all pray!" [Tony Hadley]
Like fire, hellfire, this fire in my skin, this burning desire...
@frederickwaffles I'm sure people won't mind if you rate anytime, as long as you have good constructive criticism for them. After all, the main purpose of this thread is to practice our design skills, what good is practice if we can't see how to improve?
"I will do science to it." - Kimiko “Thunderbolt” Ross
"I can wire anything directly into anything - I'm the professor!" - Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
"Our tanks can't hold aggro of that magnitude!
Also, on ratings:
I really rather approve long, well-thought sentences about specific designs than "10/10 Great card. Next."
The purpose of this thread isn't to get good grades, it's to get better as a designer; challenge game challenges your skill.
It's the reason I type so much random stuff onto my gradings and don't give actual grades. It's the exact above ideals I have.
elmdor - Wow. You lose the game definitely isn't a drawback you see everyday. Is he supposed to be an artifact or just colorless? If it wasn't for that drawback I think it would actually see play. I think the losing the game thing there is a little too extreme. I think it would make more sense to have it drain half your life or mill you. Those are rarer drawbacks and would make this guy a lot more useful. Bend it without breaking it. 9/10
Hammerhead the Barbarian

Legendary Creature - Cyclops Barbarian
Haste, trample
Sacrifice a land: Hammerhead the Barbarian gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
Smash. Smash, smash, smash? SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSH!
4/4
Next - Make a creature that uses time magic.
Proud member of [Soundtrack]
Hammerhead the Barbarian 9/10 Very good card. The "sacrifice land" ability is really pretty for combined red/green land search decks.
My card:
Timebreaker

Creature - Vedalken Wizard
When Timbreaker enters the battlefield, take an extra turn after this one and put a debt counter on Timbreaker.
Put a -1/-1 and a debt counter on Timbreaker: Take an extra turn after this one.
When Timbreaker leaves the battlefield, skip your next tourn for each debt counter on Timbreaker.
2/3
EDIT: I forget to make the challenge. So, next: make Plane card, which chaos ability will cause you to sacrifice permanents.
Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
Orbis Renaissance community set
Timebreaker: 1/10. Sorry if that's harsh, but your card basically reads like this:
What we have here is Time Stretch stuck on a Time Warp stuck on a Goat. You do get a point for trying to make a system for repaying your turns, but I think you should look towards Time Vault and Magosi, the Waterveil to see ways of doing that in less easily-abusable ways. Perhaps something as simple as this:
One last bit of parting advice: Always reread your cards, in case they do something you never noticed.
Onward, to the challenge.
Next Challenge: With all this talk of war and phyresis, I have a craving for more halcyon days. Show me a card that depicts an act of love; bonus points if it's
.
September 21, 2007: Monkeychewtoy predicts monocolored hybrid cards, calls them "Ridiculous."
Actually, as written, Timebreaker is useless unless your deck has another card called Timbreaker. Just a vanilla 2/3.
Third Sphere: 10/10. Yowch. It's falling apart and then some.
Soul Healing

Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
If ~ would enter the battlefield targeting a creature without infect, instead sacrifice it.
Enchanted creature loses infect and gains absorb 1.
Challenge: I'm watching Eddie Izzard right now, so give me a card involving jam, banjos, or sexy tunes.
Online dictionaries abound. It's time to start using them.
Sensei Le Roof - You're first ability is unnecessary. Just make it say "Enchant creature with infect" and you wouldn't need that clause in there. I don't like the swapping of infect for absorb. The card would have been better if it just removed infect. The only reason most people would use this is to immobilize a threat of poison. So why not just eliminate the infecting abilities instead of shifting them to some other benefit? 7 out of 10
DELIVERANCE ANYONE?
Banjari, the Sexy Jamming Banjo

Legendary Artifact - Equipment
Equipped creature gets +3/+3, has protection from Humans, and is a green Mutant.
Squeal like a piggy boy! Squeal like a piggy!
Next - Make a panda bear.
Proud member of [Soundtrack]
Oops!
I'm really sorry! The Timbreaker in the rules text should be Timebreaker. It's just the same fault at multiple times. Sorry
EDIT: added "be" between "should" and "Timebreaker"
I really should learn to write.
Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
Orbis Renaissance community set
Rating: I like this card. The protection from humans is really cool... It's very balanced. But it's exactly on treshold between rare and mythic rare. 9/10
Now my card:
Panda Bear

, Sacrifice a Forest: Panda Bear gets +1/+1 until end of turn and you gain 1 life
Creature - Bear Beast
Trample
It really loves bamboo, but when aren't any bamboo here, it enjoys even the normal wood.
2/2
I hope there are no mistakes in the rules text.
And next challenge: make a creature that will attack two times each turn.
Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
Orbis Renaissance community set
Panda Bear: Underpowered.
Rakdos Destroyer

, discard your hand: Untap ~. You get an additional combat phase this turn. Use this only if you have cards in your hand.
Creature-Zombie Knight
Deathtouch
6/6
Next: Create a card with a subliminal message.
Rakdos destroyer: doesn't fit the challenge. If I were to play with it, I would ignore the ability in favor of keeping my hand, and it would not get to attack twice. The only idea i had for something that actually worked that way was this:
Keyword (whenever this creature attacks and deals combat damage to a player, exile it and then return it to the battlefield tapped and attacking and it loses this ability until end of turn.)
on to the card:
I tried and tried to make a card that actually gets a subliminal message across, and failed miserably at it. The problem with sending recognizable subliminal messages is that it destroys their sublimity. Due to the fact that I try to post here at least once a week, I must try your challenge though. I have decided to, instead of following completely the challenge, make a card that represents a subliminal message. I took my cue from brave new world, by Aldous Huxley. delightful reading. I recommend it.
Sleep-conditioning Slip
Artifact--
At the end of your upkeep, put a Hypnopaedia counter on up to 1 target tapped creature you control and up to 1 target tapped creature an opponent controls.
Black creatures with Hypnopaedia counters on them cannot block or be blocked by green creatures.
Green creatures with Hypnopaedia counters on them cannot block or be blocked by black creatures.
Flavor text, though it probably wouldn't fit (I can't do italics):
"Gammas wear black. Black is such a beastly color. We betas wear green. No, I don't want to play with gammas. No, I don't. We betas are so clever."
Challenge:
Turn any lovecraftian monster of fiction into an eldrazi.
Cthulhu eats YER MIND SOUL AND BRAIN.
He also makes for a kickbutt eldrazi deck.
No, I thought somethink like this:
CARDNAME MANACOST
TYPE RARITY
Whenever CARDNAME attacks, if it's the first time it attacks this turn, untap it and after this phase, there is an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase.
POWER/TOUGHNESS
Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
Orbis Renaissance community set
Okay, I change my challenge:
make any fictional character from literature into a magic card.
Cthulhu eats YER MIND SOUL AND BRAIN.
He also makes for a kickbutt eldrazi deck.
Can I make one from a Planeswalker Novel? This one's from the purifying fire.
Mother Luti

, Deal 3 damage to target creature.
, Put a +1/+1 counter on target red creature you control.
Legendary Creature - Human Monk
3/4
Last card: 7/10. Pretty good card, though the text could be better.
Make a planeswalker with mana cost
