If a card's strong enough to make itself known in a format, there's a pretty good chance that WotC will design more cards in the same mold. Take cross-format all-star Snapcaster Mage - from Goblin Dark-Dwellers to Torrential Gearhulk to Dualcaster Mage to the very recent Dire Fleet Daredevil, we have seen many cards attempt to follow in its footsteps, with varying success.

MTGGoldfish provides handy lists of the most-played cards in various formats, arranged by "dominance" score (based on the number of lists that run a card and the average number of copies a list includes). Your task this week is to choose a card from the current top 50 most-played cards in either Standard, Modern or Legacy, and design a card that's a spiritual successor to that card, be it a colorshift, a redesign, a mirror, a counterpart, or a whole new card with a similar theme and role. Ideally, you should try not to go too far off the rails - make sure the influence of your chosen original card is clear in your design.

Please include the name of the card you're riffing on.

Best of luck!

Please remember: You're not allowed to vote for yourselves. For further information please look at the CotW Rules.

Hey, just so you know, the link for Chandra, Torch of Defiance doesn't work. I know people can just look it up themselves, but I though you'd like to know A happy smile

Also, the entry for mrchristianpunk is missing, blank, or invisible

Apparently the image for mrchristianpunk's entry is down - I've sent them a PM asking for a new one (or a text version).

Some entries I really liked this week:

Liliana, the Darkest Shadow:
A nice take on it and it has good presentation. I was a little put off that its -3 and -10 both reanimate creatures, since it feels like there's some overlap there.

Golden Blunder:
Really good design. You get rid of an opponent's card, but give them an extra mana to ramp them into another card. Feels very black, good work!

Brian Storm:
The only bad thing about this card is that it isn't legendary. A sad 'frowny'

Sunder:
This is probably too strong, just like the card it's based off of, but I love the design parallels and I think it's a very elegant card.

Delver of Fate:
Mm. I love how this plays off the original Delver. Excellent work.

Brainswirl:
Inverted brainstorm seems pretty good! It gives your opponent card disadvantage but allows them to get access to two new cards. An interesting drawback and one that could be very cool to see play out.
