Since there's now a six page gap in the original MCDT thread, here's a new one. You know the drill: this is a thread for random one-off designs that don't fit into any existing projects. For reference, the OG Misc. Card Design Thread was made back in 2015 and can be found here.

If there's anything a brontodon hates, it's flavor text-- especially didactic flavor text, the symbol of poor writing.

An idea for a card in a set I probably will never make.

The idea is it's from a Blue mana symbolGreen mana symbol tribe of scarecrows who want to learn what is means to be alive, so they experiment on creatures to find out what makes them tick and what works in what combinations.

Needleclaw Stitcher Blue mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Artifact Creature -- Scarecrow Uncommon

Hey how's it hangin'.

So, I was working on a set a year ago, before I took a hiatus from Magic. It was about science experiments, and I had a mythic cycle that represented that idea. I was looking at it today to rejog my creativity, and found that I still really liked the cycle.

MW01 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Creature - Ooze Mutant Mythic Rare
At the beginning of your upkeep, put two 1/1 white mutant creatures onto the battlefield under your control.
If you control ten or more creatures, creatures you control gain first strike.
At the beginning of your end step, if you control fifteen or more creatures, you lose the game.

MU01’s power and toughness are equal the number of cards in your hand. Whenever a creature deals combat damage to an opponent, draw a card.
If you have fourteen or more cards in your hand, you lose the game.

Had a mechanic idea

@jacqui: Scapegoat seems like it could get out of hand pretty quick. Just imagine targeting an opponent with a spell that does what the scapegoat ability does. Just a few doubled-up effects like this, & it'd be pretty hard for that player to ever come back from it. That doesn't sound at all fun to me.

My first design on this new iteration of the thread:

Smack 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Instant Common
Destroy target creature with toughness of 2 or less.
Derangement Black mana symbolBlack mana symbol (If this card would be put into your graveyard from your library, you may cast it for its derangement cost instead of putting it into your graveyard.)

Derangement is an anti-mill ability that's modelled after madness. It can go on any nonland card (although, if anyone can come up with wording for the ability that would allow it to go on lands, I wouldn't be averse to expanding it).

I actually think Scapegoat is great. Not many spells target players and this opens up some REALLY neat limited design space.

I actually wonder: If it's used as a mechanic, it needs some support at common level. What kind of effects targeting opponents do the colors get access to, though? Red has burn, black discard, blue mill - in each case normally only one such spell per set (again, looking at common level only) and I can't really think of fitting white or green effects.

So while I thik the concept is cool, I'm sceptical about its implementation into a real set. Feel free to prove me wrong, though Winking smiley

Here are a couple of examples I can think of for white:

Celestial Flare
Healing Salve

Green is harder, but they do get targeted life gain sporadically, as well as targeted artifact/enchantment sacrifice. That being said, I think this could easily be a mechanic that green simply doesn't get. Not every mechanic goes into each color!

I think you're greatly overrating the power level here-- it's entirely dependent on the efficacy of the effects stapled onto the trigger. In the case of T2 Smear Campaign, T3 Mind Rot... that's five mana to discard three cards, which is on par with Three Tragedies.

Of course, the majority of spells that hit the face are burn spells and discard, which are both mitigate the oppression factor by way of "you're dead in seven turns"

And also

Raven's Run Elder 1 mana symbolGreen mana symbol

@sdfkjgh: I think Derangement is a neat mechanic, but rather for self-mill than for anti-mill.
Also, what rarity should I make this card?

@Gorgonzola: I'm going to defer to Timespiraled in answer to your question. However, your card could be a sorcery & still work, as, like madness, when the triggering event happens, the timing restrictions for sorceries is ignored. All in all, your card is a very nice riff on my mechanic.

Shuffle your library, then exile the top five cards of your library. Look at the top five cards of your library. Put three of those cards into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. Exile Dig for Fuel.

If you really wanted it to be completely useless, you should've given it a converted mana cost of 4, made it require four different types of mana (including Colorless mana symbol and specifically red snow mana), made it a sorcery, removed cantripping, and given it "This card can't be revealed from your hand."

Seriously, why did you have to ask? Everything that follows is your fault.. A sad 'frowny' ... Winking smiley

So when I first read that question, I instantly dismissed it as I knew for a fact my oldest batch of designs didn't exist anymore - but the question started nagging at me and made me think of my second batch. And when I realized, that one did still exist, I remembered how it came to be and how my whole Magic "career" went - and today I finally realized I had to write this stuff down to get it out of my mind

So warning: Don't click to open the spoiler unless you want to read some endless ramblings of my life before I came to the forum (exclusively the parts related to MtG though)..

I warned you
I first learned of Magic's existence when I saw a TV commercial for the new 6th Edition Starter packs. It looked cool, so I tried to get my hand on one of these and after a while was indeed successful. And what can I say - the game looked awesome. The artwork was great, the gameplay sounded interesting (thankfully, the stack had just been introduced Winking smiley ) and the cards were awesome. I pulled a Wrath of God (looking back my most expensive card by that time) and judged in unplayable as it destroyed my stuff as well - as you can see, I've always been a pro

There was just one slight problem: I had noone to play against. None of my friends were interested in the game, I had no siblings and lived in a small village so there was no large community around I could have tried to get in to - aside from the fact of me being a rather shy person in RL (especially back then), so I probably wouldn't have tried that even if given the opportunity. So besides from playing a few games against myself sometimes, the game was already dead for me right from the start. I bought one or two boosters over the next few years, but more to look at the cards rather than to play with them.

Many years later, though, after moving multiple times, I entered a new group of friends. And after a while, we realized all of us had at some part of our life had more or less played Magic.I was easily the least experienced one, whereas our best player was active pro playing at national level tournaments for the win (even if as far as I know he sadly never ended up winning one of the really big ones before he quit the game). So suddenly for the first time ever I had a playgroup - and played lots (and lots! Stick out your tongue ) of games. I started building up my collection buying simple card piles from Ebay first, then single cards later as I went from goodstuff decks to the first ones created with a theme in mind. The first deck I ever created this way was a mono-red midrage burn deck (killing with Fanning the Flames) and the first good deck I created was a mono-white protection themed deck which was so persistent and annoying to play against - it made sure Protection would have a soft spot in my heart till this day (also I would never forget all of its effects) Order of the Stars into Beloved Chaplain into Mask of Memory felt awesome - even though with more experience within our group the decks got obviously better over time.

This was when one of my friends stumbled across MSE for the first time. He told us about it and I became interested - so I went online and downloaded it (never bothering to look at the forum - sorry guys Winking smiley ) and decided to design a set, because.. How hard could it be, right? As I was a big fan of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime I knew my theme and simply started designing, pausing after pretty much exactly a dozen or so cards. Obviously I had started with the "interesting stuff" a.k.a. the angels and EVAs, meaning I had made up a bunch of rare creatures. And they were horrible. Seriously, even as new as I was, I hated them. I did like one or two of these cards as they were very simple yet fit their character well while feeling like proper rares, but the rest was an incoherent mess. I closed the program and stopped designing as I obviously wasn't good at it (no joke, I really was that pragmatic). This must have been right after Future Sight came out as I remember using Absorb to represent the AT fields.

So I went back to just playing, but after a while this wasn't enough for me. There wasn't always someone around to play with and I still had much to catch up to, so I started reading Magic articles. Many of them. Seriously, you have no idea. I've always been a booknerd, loved reading up to a dozen books and/or mangas at the same time, and am I big theoretician as well ( I wonder if these two things might be related in some way..? Stick out your tongue ) - so I literally started reading everything I had access to. I used a German MTG website which hosted a few own articles, but linked to many others (most of them being English, which is why I always think about this game and all of its cards names and mechanics in English till this day Winking smiley ). I read articles concerning gameplay, card by card analysis of decks I didn't even play as well as format breakdowns for formats never bothered playing, articles about game and card design as well as many, many more. Even I felt weird after reading an article written for vendors explaining how to buy big card piles and then handle them in the best way to make as much profit possible - and I still remember being baffled after I read the Shards of Alara "interviews" with the color pairs about how they felt working with one another.

After a while, some things changed though. Obviously my skills improved until I pretty much could hold even ground even with our pro player in formats where our card quality didn't matter (he simply had access to much more expensive and sometimes powerful cards I had been willing to spend money on) - never played in sanctioned events myself, though - yet after a while reading new stuff became getting boring as the content became repetitive and predictable. For a while it didn't bother me, I simply played more and designed more decks to play with, but after a while RL made our playgroup fall apart slowly but surely. This was pretty much the time where I was the closest at dropping the game completely.

So one day when I was bored staring at my computer, I found the MSE logo as I had never bothered to deleate the program (it's such a small one afterall). I looked at my old game file, judged the designs to be absolutely horrible indeed and deleated the file. Still, I decided to search for the program online once before deleating it for good as well, and stumbled across this forum. After simply reading some stuff here and there for a month or so, I created this account and entered a few of the weekly contests – one of the first ones being the Mini Set challenge (so sad it died). And what can I say? I was pretty much hooked instantly. I realized for me designing at lower rarities was where the most fun was to be had – it took me a few years to realize I could enjoy designing for higher rarities as well as long as I kept the design approaches simple and coherent.

And yeah, I'm obviously still sitting around designing cards and enjoying it massively. In contrast, I rarely ever play anymore (maybe once or twice a year) – but my son already learned the basics of the game and really likes it as well. So in a few years, when he's a bit older (so I don't have to decide which cards he has access due to the content of some of them) and can read my English cards, it seems like I'll be playing more games again Big smile

Fun fact, though – those six cards that made my very first entry for the Mini Set Contest mentioned above were actually saved in a file which still exists – so while my original renders are long gone (obviously as I've changed image hosters twice since then), I could reupload them. So while they are not the first cards I designed, there were only twenty designs before them at max. Also, if you're still reading this – wow Hope you didn't mind my ramblings, writing all this stuff to get itn out of my head proved to be quite much fun, actually. Also the self-reflection was kind of interesting as well.

@Daij: I don't know why you're so hard on yourself, that was a wonderful story, with a nice, heartwarming end. And the submitted cards are actually pretty good, they just need a little templating cleanup. This is starting to feel like that scene in Charlie Brown with the sickly little Christmas tree...

TBH I'm proud of this boy.

I just dont understand why people pay thousands for a piece of cardboard.
Why just don't play some casual? Gee, it isn't even fun to play with, and especially against.

Wow, that was an interesting story, Daij!

Yeah, I think Noble Soul ended up in that one core set.

I don't have my first cards anymore. They were in Italian. The miscellaneous file and another one of my of the files got huge eventually. That one was about a world where all the factions were two coloured and one of them was Black mana symbol. The White mana symbolBlack mana symbol dudes used zombies for free labour, kind of how the mummies on Amonkhet built pyramids and stuff. There was a Red mana symbol X spell that dealt X damage to target creature or player and had flashback X mana symbolBlack mana symbol. I also had an overpowered umbrella equipment that gave +1/-1, double strike and some other stuff for really cheap. I remember I had a legendary Elf for like 7 mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbolGreen mana symbol who was a 16/16 and then became a 8/16 double strike and then a 16/16 double strike, and it also did some other stuff. I did not understand how double strike or combat damage worked back then. Like Daij, I think I also made some mecha cards. The pilots had level up, but were a new card type that could be assigned to creatures whenever you attacked iirc, and not creatures. I remember there being a cheap artifact creature with high P/T and "3 mana symbol: Tap target creature".

Actually, I had posted one of my first cards from one of those files here, 4 years ago, so I still have that one.

Spoiler:
Here's what I had to say about it back in 2013:

For example, here's one of the first cards I made. Horribly overpowered and out of color. I got a lot better since that.

EDIT - Translated:

Yeah, as the card is written, you are the one who deals the damage.

Also, here's the first set I tried to make *after* I joined the forums: http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/node/6751
