Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and ninety-fifth challenge!

The winner of the "The weather sure is nice today.." poll was jacqui-pup with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

When I saw the lyrics, one name instantly stood out for me. And when I remembered the quote (I know, it might be wrongly assigned to him, but oh well Winking smiley ), I also knew what kind of effect to use for the card. So here we go:

Old template to fit the artwork's style.

First time in a while I've heard a song with enough content to fill more than two verses. On the other hand, it wasn't as much lyrics as listing lots of keywords referring to important and notable events in history.

Here is my first strike at this week's contest (if you get the pun...):

That is an 8 mana symbol mana spell that reads "The game ends in a draw" for all intents and purposes.

Quick question: would an oblique reference to one of the people mentioned in the lyrics be ok?

So... Are you saying it should cost less or that it should deal less damage? Divine Intervention is a card with cmc 8 that ends the game as a draw. Also, one of the second reason why the card is white in addition to its red nature (the main reason is that white is the color of mass destruction), is that a white deck may contain lifegain cards like Warleader's Helix, wich would actually make this card an alternative winning condition instead of a forced draw.

There is a reason that Divine Intervention was printed once in 1994 and the effect has never been seen since.

Yes, that's the year I was born... What was the reason again?..
Well, I can imagin the possibility of ending the game in a draw might be a real pain in turnaments... and also in general, especially if a person actually base their deck on it, but with this card, the risk of killing off yourself is meant as a drawback, not a way to end the game as a draw. In that case, maybe I should reduce the cost..?

Maybe I should add that if Hydrogen Bomb would cause the game to end in a draw, you loose the game?

Unrest - If your life total has changed this turn, repeat the process once more.
"Of one thing, I am certain: I will not resign!"
- Steward Erch of the Department of Trade, three days before resigning

I probably need to tweak the numbers on this a little. Unrest is a new mechanic from an upcoming project.

Mahx:
You're right, I should've been more constructive. Sorry.

I think the effect just has too much potential to end the game on the spot. With similar cards, such as Divine Intervention, there is a chance for others to work around it by either killing you or destroying the enchantment. Another example could be Biorhythm, which is "8 mana symbol mana end the game if my opponent doesn't have any creatures". That's the kicker, though, it also has counterplay. With Hydrogen Bomb, there is no counterplay other than, well, counters. Since it exiles all creatures, you can't even rely on Platinum Angel or similar creatures to save you. There needs to be a way to fight against the card besides just counterspells. I think the way I'd go about it would be "Each player's life total becomes 1" instead of dealing 20 damage. It does remove the ability to just win the game on the spot, but it also allows the opponent a chance to fight back. This wording also has the upside of being awesome against lifegain decks that gain so much life you could never hope to win.

I'm sure there are other methods, such as reducing the damage or increasing the cost, that could balance the card. This is just one that I think works pretty well.

~ enters the battlefield with three time counters on it.
At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter from ~. Then, if there are no time counters left on ~, exile all creatures and ~ deals 20 damage to each player.
If ~ would cause the game to end in a draw, you loose the game.

This gives the opponent a chance to turn the tables before the bomb goes off. If your opponent manages to drain your life below 20, your opponents can actually win the game.
I could of course make it drain the players' life to 1, but that wouldn't fit the flavor that well and would also make it a compleatly different card. It would probably even change color to black and white or even maybe monoblack...

Mahx:
I think that's fine! I'd even go so far as to remove the last ability, since you have three turns for the opponent to deal with it. If they can't do anything in three turns, then I'd say it's fair for them to lose or for the game to draw. Heck, maybe this even could become its own archetype, something like R/W artifacts with lifegain (a la Lightning Helix and such) to power it out faster and gain life to avoid dying to it.

Actually, I think I'll keep the last ability to prevent the card to be abused. Too many draws in a turnament might actually become a problem, and with a card like this that is actually a lot more useful than Divine Intervention, it might also appear in more turnaments and become an even larger problem. So I think the tiebreaker should remain.
Anyways, thanks a lot for helping me solve this problem, you're a legend!

Revolution of the Common Folk 3 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbol

Enchantment

When ~ enters the battlefield, exile all permanents. Then, starting with you, each player puts a permanent exiled this way onto the battlefield until there are no permanents left.

Whenever a permanent enters the battlefield, the player with the least number of that type of permanent gains control of it. (In the case of a tie, it goes to the first person with the least number in turn order.)

I have no idea whether this is too wordy, as I don't have access to my computer right now. Once I can make a render, and if there are too many words, I can cut down on some of the more extensive words. I made the card white, black, and red, because communism is inherently a white-based system, but the revolution itself (represented by the Theives Auction effect) is more black and red to me.

You go first with the Thieves' Auction effect, so no matter what permanent you grab, your opponent will have fewer permanents of that type because they have zero as opposed to your one, and they'll steal it. Effectively meaning that you pick your opponent's permanents.
