Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and ninety-third challenge!

The winner of the "Greatness Beyond Words" poll was ColinBeck with...

As sadly neither our winner nor our runner-up responded in time, I'm using a backup challenge for this week:

I wrote:
Today, the world's biggest UNO world climate conference starts here in Germany. Sadly my home country recently lost quite a bit of its momentum, the US isn't on board anymore anyway, and now China tries to speed up things (if only to sell their e-cars Winking smiley ).

Still, I didn't intend to get too political here. Your challenge for this week is: Design a card inspired by the climate or the weather! It can be about climate protection, change or manipulation, specific weather phenomenons, or whatever you can think of. Be creative and have fun!

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

@Colin: To be fair, objectively better isn't accurate (Harrow has a color density of one, whereas this has a color density of two, which might be relevant when trying to mana fix). Quick feedback wall for everyone thus far.

Asthanius: I don't much care for snow as a mechanic, but this seems like a pretty strong execution of it nonetheless. I don't know if it lives at uncommon, though. The second ability looks rare to me due to memory considerations and self-fueling (akin to Pride of the Clouds).

Malsey: This is probably too powerful. If storm can resolve one of these on turn three, it doesn't need its rituals and can rely solely on card draw and finishers - which could include just drawing and cantripping through your entire deck and winning off Helix Pinnacle or something. Yes, it's technically symmetrical, but there's no guarantee that your opponent will be playing enough instants and sorceries to make it worth their while, or able to spend the extra mana before it dissipates between phases.

BurningCreator: Hey, another instant and sorcery based catastrophe! This effect is a lot like Wastes of Muetar's irradiate, a fairly potent mechanic that was absolute hell to play against if your opponent could do it to you. With that in mind, this just stops way too many decks from actually playing Magic for my taste, a little bit like a Blood Moon. Sure, it can be removed, but only two out of five colors can deal with enchantments.

Aarhg: Clever. The double-X probably keeps this reasonable, but, awkwardly, makes it more compelling to cast as just a 4/4 lifelinking flyer for four, which is a damn good deal.

Gateways7: The colors are a bit all over the place. Stormy Seas' ETB ability is a white effect (it's the "attacking and blocking" that makes it that instead of black), and the activated ability is probably roughly White/black mana symbol (and a touch powerful). I also don't see a legitimate reason for the land to make different colors? It's flavorful, but mechanically it makes the card feel rather messy.

kinotherapy: I almost feel contractually obliged to give this my vote because of the goddamn red sun. A friend of mine apparently woke up really late that day, once the sky had gotten very, very dark, and thought the apocalypse had started without him. The card itself is a really interesting take on a combat-based wrath, and seems appropriately costed compared to something like Wave of Reckoning. (Also, I'm currently studying ancient warfare and I can confirm that the Spartans did this kind of thing all the time, even during the Persian invasion of Greece - much to the irritation of their allies.)

Quazer Flame: Judging scheme cards is very, very difficult, but this one looks a tad strong, being a mass Sudden Disappearance that'll sometimes let you steal some of the heroes' stuff. Awesome villainous quote, but I wonder if the Disappearance effect or the randomize-control effect might be strong enough on its own.

spazlaz: Somehow this is even more oops-I-win than most miracle cards. It's more or less the infamous Upheaval/Psychatog combo without having to reach nine mana, or even necessarily use a Psychatog. I could see this working if it were nonland permanents. As-is, if you can resolve something biggish and miracle this, you're more or less guaranteed to beat your opponent down before they can rebuild their board state.

TheBrokenUrn: This is Lightning Strike. Lightning Strike is a fine card, but I think you would fare better in a custom card competition by designing a card that is not Lightning Strike.

Viriss: Choking back my instinctive hatred of the aftermath frame, this is a cute, clean design which, though it's lighter on synergy between its halves than some aftermath cards, still feels coherent enough. I agree with the commentary that it probably wants a cost increase on the front half, or maybe a reduction to sorcery speed, to stop it from outclassing the very potent Harrow so easily.

Yoshi: I don't think this needs the word "already". Otherwise... well, the pun made me groan, but it wasn't necessarily a bad groan.

@thehuw: Yeah, I wasn't entirely certain because the counters, in my view, negated a lot of the memory issues, and I also saw it as a guiding uncommon for draft (i.e. the White/Blue archetype is snow creatures), but I agree that it also works at rare, especially if other things take advantage of ice counters.

Tue, 2017-11-07 23:47
Aarhg's picture

@thehuw's comment on my card: It is a good deal to simply cast it for Red mana symbolRed mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol, but if you can effectively wipe all of your opponents' creatures out and gain a bunch of life, paying a bit extra can definitely be worth it, but it also comes down to which format it's played in.
I will say though, a 4/4 flyer with upside for four mana is not unreasonably good. In white there's Indomitable Archangel and in red there's Bloodsworn Steward to mention a couple, but both of these are easier to cast than Thunderplume. I think the restrictive mana cost on the card keeps a decent balance on that part. Thanks for the feedback! A happy smile

@All: Now...

I have learned that my card apparently does not work Stick out your tongue. When the X is a part of the card's casting cost, it can't connect to an ETB ability. I have therefore made two possible fixed versions - one that uses kicker and one that uses multikicker. They're pretty much identical in function, but I'd like to know which version you guys prefer. Maybe I should stick with the original, which would mean the game rules would need a slight change in some way. Or if you have an idea for another way to make it work, I'd love to hear it.

@thehuw: Thanks! It's lovely to receive warm feedback like that, even if it's mostly about the flavour (looks like my plan to secure to UK vote worked >:])

I looked up what I was talking about and sure it enough it was the Battle of Marathon I was thinking of; we only covered Sparta in class and not the rest of Greece, so all I really know about that battle is Persian invaders and irritated Athenians lol. (Also I'm not sure how well the flavour actually translates to Theros lore, but it was the most straightforward fit)

@Aarhg: I like the multikicker personally, though the costs look a little odd. Now that it's not an XX cost spell, perhaps you could change the casting cost 2 mana symbolRed mana symbolWhite mana symbol and the kicker into Red mana symbolWhite mana symbol? I feel like that would make it look cleaner, though it would also leave the body a little strong..

Also if you're looking for alternatives, you could consider putting the mana payment into the etb itself, as in Rise of the Hobgoblins. Not that different to kicker but I just thought I'd make the suggestion

Exile all lands. Each player may search their library for up to X basic lands, where X is the number of lands they controlled that were exiled this way, and puts them onto the battlefield. Each player that searched their library this way shuffles their library. Exile ~.

The intention is that it gets lands out of your deck and gets the mana back and in some situations at a profit, however it does slowly deplete your land reserves, and it can also get rid of annoying special lands though if they have basics in their deck it should destroy them. I don't know about the cost and the phrasing seems dubious.

@Malsey: This looks like it can go out of hand faster than Mizzix.

@Gateways7: This is way too cheap for all the exiling it does. Maybe make it exile until ~ leaves the battlefield? I still think that would make the second ability way too cheap.
How about the following: The second ability cost 4 or 5 mana and checks how many cards are exiled with ~. And transforms at a certain value.
The different colored backside is a little confusing but very flavourful.
If you tell me where you got the pictures, I could make you a transform render.

@Inverness: How about each other player's upkeep? I know it's a difference in THG, I still think it weird to lose life then get it back the same moment.

I appreciate the comment, and I thought about it as I was designing the card. The reason I kept it, ultimately, is that I wanted a card that was inherently hypocritical. The trigger will drain each player equally, but since you gain the life, your trigger doesn't actually hurt you. The idea being that the alarmist can use artifacts, but no one else.

That said, I won't rule out what you suggested. It is a bit awkward for an ability. :/

@Touhoufanatic, this would likely read as "At the beginning of each players upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on each creature, and each player gets a poison counter."

@Heads vs Tails, it would be cool if this had haste so it could benefit from its own storm.

@Aarhg, could you keep the X in the mana cost, and give it an "as enters the battlefield" effect like Altered Ego has?

@Flo00, regarding your comment on my card, it is different in that it will hit all lands almost guaranteeing the mana spent to cast it back, plus sometimes more, as well as getting that many lands out of your deck. So lets say you have 5 lands, you cast a one drop and then this, then you get 5 mana back and cast Changeling Titan or one of the 5 mana exort creatures turning the one drop that your opponent might otherwise be able to remove into something more useful. It may not be that useful or different but it is at least a bit more.
I had wanted it to be for three mana, but I am unsure if that is too much.
