I've been thinking a lot about ways to expand the color pie recently, and figure there might be an interest in this sort of thread.

The big one I've been thinking about is Act of Treason effects in green. It flavorfully is a perfect fit, embodying green's beastmaster tropes, gives green a form of ""removal"" that doesn't kill outright (something it sorely needs), and most vitally, gives green something to do that isn't just CREATURES CREATURES CREATURES and fits at common.

I never thought about Threaten-ing effects in green. I does look like it would fit in the green color-pie, but I think it could have some restriction

This was what I thought

Tame [Green mana symbolGreen mana symbol]
Instant
Untap target Beast and gain control of it until end of turn. It gains haste until end of turn.

Other ideas that I had when thinking about colorshifts and wanted your opinions on:

Counters in White mana symbol, not literally Counterspell but more Rebuff the Wicked effects.
Damage redirection in Red mana symbol but only to you

I want red bounce. Both self and others. I think it was one of the few Planar Chaos shifts that made mechanical sense - red is all about short-term gains, and bouncing an opponent's creature is a tempo hit akin to deeptapping or destroying one of their lands. Bouncing your own creatures could work well in a dash-like context (dash was superb for red), or maybe even as a hybrid drawback / build-around like we've seen in green with Invasive Species and Roaring Primadox.

Red could use a few more effects in general. It definitely has the narrowest slice of the pie, even now. The other big idea I liked from PLC was red being the choice color, getting the only split cards in the set. I could totally be behind red becoming the king of modal.

I also maintain that counterspells of some stripe should exist outside blue, just because countermagic is too iconic and versatile an effect to restrict to a single color. I agree with A_R that white is probably the best secondary color for them, though I'd be okay with white getting only soft counters (a la Mana Tithe and Lapse of Certainty).

Oh, and it's weird that black only seems to get artifact interaction as part of an archetype. Why does the color of greed care so little about material possessions?

To be fair, how common is artifact interaction, period? Black gets stuff like Phylactery Lich on occasion.

I recall someone posting this card:

Frighten 1 mana symbolRed mana symbol
Instant Common
Return target blocking creature to its owner's hand.

Which I think makes sense in Red mana symbol. (And also gives it overlap with Blue mana symbol which is good, since the two colors have like nothing in common otherwise)

Of note, apparently according to MaRo both Mana Tithe and Lapse are in color for white officially.

Also, what about hexproof in black? It looks so flavorful in the color...
