Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and eighty-eighth challenge!

The winner of the "The Island of Misfit Toys" poll was kinotherapy with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

Ixalan's just released, and with it Dinosaurs, and some other tribes too. One of my favourite parts is the new mechanic Enrage that allows Dinosaurs to turn taking damage (bad thing) into card draw / ramp / burn / tokens / life / +1/+1 counters (good thing!) In a similar nature, the challenge this week is to create a card that turns something you'd usually consider a negative effect or incident into an upside. (You can make an Enrage creature if you like! Other examples would be Gavony Unhallowed or Loxodon Smiter)

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

I'd say that having no lands in your opening hand is a VERY negative incident ... So let's turn that into a positive.

Her name is an anagram for 'Mana Screw', if that already wasn't obvious...

So in other words, Enrage is a pretty much a better version of Preserve, right (exept Preserve isn't an official keyword).
I think I'll try this again

That seems to want to be at the end of combat or end of turn.

@acid pretty strong no negatives on it though for a 7/1

@mahx still feel it could cost 1RG

This card does not do anything in vacuum, but if a deck is built around of it, it can be pretty powerful.

Thanks @Daij_Djan for once again fleshing out my wordy challenge with great examples! And thanks everyone who voted for me, but I can't believe you let a fidget-spinner-powered aeroplane card on the front page. I mean I'm glad, but also sort of ashamed.

@Zuty: The poll isn't up yet, so you could try messaging Daij if it's a simple img link swap. "Please message me immediately if you notice a discrepancy in your entry or another's entry" and all that

@Sylphiod: This one is a close call but I think it's fine (though I definitely agree with making it a Trap!)

You mean you didn't win? That's also what happened with most of the other participants that round...
But yes, it might be true that people would be drawn to the cards with the lower costs. The "I might actually want to play this" feel often affects wich card we vote for.

@Zuty: Anyone entering a contest with many participants is way more likely to lose than they are to win. Starting to disregard all feedback seems a bit of an overreaction to losing a contest. Unless you meant that you followed all feeback acritically before losing that contest and changed your card to whatever anyone else wanted, any time anybody would make a suggestion, and that now you'll instead start thinking about your cards more before changing them according to feedback. In that case, that seems like a positive change in attitude. I actually have no preference concerning your card's mana cost. Wizards isn't doing mana dorks for one mana anymore because that way too few two-drops were getting cast, but they have said that the pendulum might swing back to one-mana mana dorks being printed again in the future. If you bumped your card's cost up, as Mahx Micheal suggested, I'd also bump her stats a bit so that she's a bit more useful on turn two: 1/3 or 2/1 should probably be fine for her if she cost two mana.

A couple things.

First off, this thread seems to have vanished off of the Contests and Games section of the forums for me. Not sure whether it's acting like that for anyone else, but it made it difficult for me to see other entries coming in.

Second, what kind of limitations are there for challenge making? The FAQ has information for entering a challenge and for voting, but barely anything for the rules of submitting the next week's challenge, only instructions for how and when to do so.

@Quazer Flame: The CotW challenges have their own subsection (as they'd otherwise clog the other challenges' section), do the threads tend to disappear for you there as well (I know this happens to some threads from time to time, have never experienced a CotW one doing so, though)?

Concerning submitting challenges: On Sundays, I tend to send a PM to everyone currently in first place as well as our runner-up(s) - except when sometimes there's a clear leader the days before and they approach me by themselves (some users prefer doing this as they know they won't be available over the weekend.

The challenges submitted don't really have any harsh restrictions besides they should make you design a card (for example no challenges purely about art descriptions). Also it's about Magic the Gathering cards - while challenges may be open to other boardgames (and sometimes users indeed make such entries) they should not be limited to a non-Magic game. Other then that, I sometimes veto a challenge when it was done just recently already (sometimes challenges repeat themselves after a year or so - but I'd veto against repeating a challenge after a month, f.e.) or would adress concerns when it feels too restrictive. However this happens like twice a year or so (aside from me sometimes clearing up the wording or adding card links to clarify the challenge), I tend to be quite lenient about this.

Thu, 2017-10-05 20:50
kinotherapy's picture

@Quazer: I saw that too! Until your post, which bumped it for me. Pretty odd. Answering your other question as a fellow newfriend, I don't think there are any specific rules about it other than using common sense about what makes a good challenge i.e. a limitation that encourages creative card-making without being too restrictive (i.e. results in all the same entries), and that creates variety without being too vague.

For my first challenge I went back through the last page of challenges to make sure I wasn't repeating something but even that didn't really matter, since there's been repeat challenges before. I'm sure a veteran user can point out some more of the etiquette but seems to me if it's the kind of challenge you would find interesting it's probably fine.

EDIT: What a ninja lol

@jacqui: From a flavor standpoint, this card represents Elesh Norn's faction fighting against Mirrans. You and your army are the infected/compleated ones, not your opponent; hence, the counter requirement. That's the hoop you have to jump through to benefit from the discounted enchantment, since it's more difficult to give yourself a counter rather than give one to an opponent, but it's easy enough with cards like Ichor Rats. Also, since you're fighting Mirrans flavor-wise, indestructible would still be useful, as their dudes don't have infect.
