So yeah, the 2017 commanders came out and they're all tribal and stuff. Which, naturally, lead me to immediately start designing my own Tribal commanders. Or rather, I'm deep into design of one tribal commander for a tribe I've always loved but recognize will probably never really be a thing. Wolves.

I'm putting this thread into Community Projects for two reasons. One: So I can get critique on the work I do. And two: So if anyone is just dying to make some Tribal commander stuff for Tribes they always wished had the support, they can work on them here as well.

Anyway, here's where I'm at:

Wolf Tribal Commander







Reasons and Blurbs
Tovolar is the leader of the Mondronen Werewolf Howlpack. He is referred to as almost never seen transforming back into a human.

Shiraga is a new character based on Kamigawa. His story is still in the works.

Johanna and Pavel are the leaders of the Silverfur Howlpacks and assisted in the battle for Thraben if I recall correctly.

Avacyn's Fallen is basically a reflavored Hound of Griselbrand.

The Wild Hunt is me not wanting to use Master of the Wild Hunt simply because he's a human and he taps all of your wolves. Thus The Wild Hunt is simply a nod to the Master without having his issues.

Aspect of Boravel is a reference to my set-in-progress Boravel.

Want to build your own Commander 2017 Tribal deck? Here's some helpful numbers:

C17 Card Format
If you want the deck to follow the Commander 2017 format, you want 16 new cards and this is what you should aim for:

7 Tribe-Specific cards divided into:
-One commander with eminence.
-Two other Legendary creatures that DO NOT reference their tribe by creature type. These ones are added to have the tribe's creature types and support the MECHANICS of that tribe without specifically needing that tribe. They are there to have in case players want looser commander decks and not be restricted entirely to just tribal.
-Two rare cards that support the tribe specifically.
-Two rare cards that support the tribe's mechanics, not the creature types.

2-3 of the new Curse cards, if desired. Otherwise, 2-3 cards that have no connection to tribal at all.

4-5 creature type matters cards. Cards that have you choose a creature type then benefit that type in some way.

3-5 miscellaneous cards. These can be whatever you want as far as I care.

Weird for the commander to care about Werewolves when there aren't any on Mirrodin. Other than that, neat project. Are you going to make any new tribe-agnostic cards?

Yeah I was in a long debate as to whether I'd use Werewolves as part of the tribe, but I decided it was worth the flavor stretch to allow a more versatile use.

EDIT: For those interested in making their own tribal commanders, I researched the numbers a bit.

I'm gonna take a crack at Cleric reanimator (with two non-reanimator legends, of course). With flavour blurbs for the legends, since I do love that.

First off, the main attraction.

Tap symbol, Tap X other untapped Clerics you control: Return target creature or planeswalker card with converted mana cost X from your graveyard to the battlefield. Activate this ability only during your turn.

Milana is a high-ranking member of the Orzhov clergy who seems preoccupied indeed with debt in its many forms. My interpretation is based on the idea of Milana first gathering up lesser Orzhov priests, then using them to perform a ritual to transcend even the boundary of death to ensure the debt is paid in full.

Druids! This is a five-color deck, but intended to be heavily green-based. The strategy here is ramp plus mana sinks, whether those are X-spells, repeatable activated abilities, or just honkin' great creatures from across the five colors.

The big cheese himself. That last ability is a very transparent way to make him count as all colors, sure, but in this deck it's intended to help get your mana in order for your big haymakers and payoffs.

Dionus is a flavor text character from Shandalar who showed up on four core set cards. We know virtually nothing about him except that he's territorial and thinks slivers are a bit like trees. Since all his cards are green, I decided to make him a mono-green option for mana-elf purists. (He is, of course, also an Elf himself.)

All right, all cards for the Fungus deck have been made. Is there a limit to the number of tribes we can submit?

EDIT: @Huw: Just a note, but if you had the legendaries for the deck as-is, none of them except for the Eminence druid would actually be able to helm the deck without taking out all the cards that had other colors and replacing them.

Navael could lead the deck without alteration. Dionus couldn't, but one of the alt commanders for the Dragon deck is the Dragons version of Taigam, who also can't, so I'm fine with it.

I see Navael now (somehow i missed it before) but the Dragons deck had three commanders anyway (Ur-Dragon, Ramos, and O-Kagachi). Though if you don't want three commanders/ want one of them to be a reprint, that can probably work.

This is just a thread to facilitate creativity. Make as many decks as you want.

When it comes to the legends, the strong recommendation is to have at least one other legendary creature capable of commanding the deck. So the commander and at least one other creature of the deck's intended colors.
