Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and eightieth challenge!

The winner of the "Charging into Battle" poll was fluffyDeathbringer with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

Choose a set, duel deck etc. that's been published here on the site and make a card that either flavourfully or mechanically references that project! However, the project can't be your own. If you choose a community project, it's fine if you had some part in it, but not if you started it or had a major part in moving it along. (For example, neither HerziQuerzi nor myself could choose Mious, but we could both choose Ashura.)

Also, this isn't a requirement, but I'd appreciate it if you all tried to choose a set, duel deck etc. that no one else has.

Note: Please note the project you're referring to - the reference will be added to the poll.

Note 2: As it has some similarities, please don't reuse old entries from CotW #172, though. (Also I feel like there was another similar contest log in the past which I don't remember the number of anymore.) ~Daij_Djan

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

As Photobucket wants me to pay 400$/year to link to my images, I'll relocate all renders.

Damiere Deathwaltzer 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Creature - Goblin Zombie Rare
Whenever CARDNAME or another creature enters the battlefield under your control, if a creature died this turn, put a step counter on it.
Whenever a creature you control with a step counter attacks, up to one target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn.

Damiere + step counters are from The Racecourse, by Neottolemo.

Working on an alt-color pie at the moment. Check me out in forum games!
If you need help with a community project, just message me and I'll be glad to help.

I was going to call dibs on Penada, but the set file doesn't seem to want to open on my computer. Any ideas as to why? The program just freezes up when I try to open it.

EDIT: I figured it out, I think. The BAK file, which ends in ".mse-set" doesn't download along with the other file named "Penada1.0" (even though the download link says it leads to a file ending in ".mse-set").

@Daij_Djan: Do you know how I can get the rest of your set?

Penada has fortresses and a single spell with Empowered. Why not combine the two to give the latter some more attention?

Lost Sanctum 2 mana symbolGreen mana symbolWhite mana symbol
Fortress - Penada Rare
(Lost Sanctum is empowered if you control a green or white legendary creature or planeswalker.)
+1 Loyalty: Target creature gains indestructible until your next turn. If Lost Sanctum is empowered, that creature also gains vigilance until end of turn.
-2 Loyalty: Create a 1/1 colorless Spirit creature token with flying. If Lost Sanctum is empowered, create two of those tokens instead.
3 SIEGE COUNTERS

(Seriously why isn't there a way to type out starting loyalty?)

I'd like to use Mious, if people don't mind. I'm coming up with an entry for it.

Rising Waters included a mechanic which never made it to the final set called benthic, an ability word that wanted you to control a Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, or Serpent - the same creature types that dodge Whelming Wave. Four cards in the final file do still have abilities that care about those four types, though, hence...

Diluvian Demand 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol
Sorcery Uncommon
Each opponent puts a creature they control on top of their library.
Whenever a Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, or Serpent enters the battlefield under your control, you may return Diluvian Demand from your graveyard to your hand.
The sea will have its due, one way or another.

@Asthanus: The BAK file is a back-up file. It shouldn't make a difference. Try checking to make sure you have any templates the set requires.

Most likely the Fortress template causes the issues - it's called "Artbg-walkers", if I remember correctly.

I think I'll go for the mechanical side, since I yet have not gotten deep enough into the lore of the different sets.
This is my first try on this weeks contest:

Yang Xiao Long 2 mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol
Creature - Human Berserker Uncommon
Trample, haste
Whenever Yang Xiao Long perseveres, put a +1/+1 counter on it. (A creature perseveres when it’s dealt damage and doesn’t die.)

I'm not quite sure wether the costs are sufficient, so I wouldn't mind any feedback on that A happy smile

@Yoshi: I'm honoured! Big smile The card looks powerful, but interesting. However, I'd change the step counter granting ability's wording: with the current one, it seems like it puts the counter on the dead creature. That problem could be avoided if you moved the "if a creature died this turn" part after "put a step counter on it" A happy smile

Referencing Stratopol: City of Patterns. Swelter is one of an orcish shaman's many sons. He grew up on Winter Street in a shaky situation, and due to his sympathies and intolerance of strict rules ended up contributing to the Eastern Sector revolts which caused the introduction of a curfew in the zones near Winter Street.
What sets him apart from the common Winter Street subverter is that not only was he trained as a shaman, but he also immediately recognised the potential of the Weave, a feature/entity unique to the City of Patterns and unknown to the orcs' home plane of Kaldra.
The Weave is a name that refers to the patterns which repeat themselves in the City. To some, they may not be visible. But a keen observer can see them unravel. And an ambitious one can attempt to control them. There is power in the Weave.

If there's anything in this blurb that doesn't fit the current worldbuilding, feel free to correct me, Huw Big smile

@fluffy: I can see some memory issues here with which overlaid cards go where when The Overlay leaves the battlefield, depending on whether you exiled them from the battlefield or your hand. Maybe that's alright at mythic, though.

Borrowing a page from Imperial Legacies (designed by Timespiraled) to bring you some fancy parasitic inscription tricks. If you don't know what inscribing does, check this below:

That's an inscription that you inscribe onto creatures! Neat, right? Thanks, Timespiraled!

After some pondering, I decided to intentionally not choose a full set to base my entry around - and after some looking through the Showcase area, I once again stumbled across Yoshi's From the Vault: Unions. So here we go:

Card might be changed completely if I come up with a different combination of mechanics later on Winking smiley
