Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and seventy-fifth challenge!

The winner of the "Conspiracy Theory" poll was marioware2 with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

Across Magic's history, there have been plenty of great villains, including but not limited to the Eldrazi, the Phyrexians, and most recently Nicol Bolas. In their honor, design a card that is either a villain or based on a villain. This could be an individual who is a villain, a member of a group of villains, a henchman of a villain - anything you want, as long as it's at least slightly evil!

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

@jacqui: The whole point is it's a Thoughtseize onna stick that asks the question, "How much life are you willing to pay for me?" If you want a Gray Ogre with upside, well, you got it. If you want a super-hatebear, you got that too, but it's gonna be a bit painful. And if you want a Thoughtseize with a 2/2 attached, then you'll be taking 6, my friend.

I just lucked out in finding some art that kinda calls back to Mindslicer.

Feedback time! Haven't done one of these in a while, sorry guys.

I think this card could be fair if it costed 2 mana symbolPhyrexian Black ManaPhyrexian Black Mana. As it is now, this is absolutely overpowered in a deck based around Death's Shadow. On turn 1, assuming an average draw of 1 of these, two fetches/shocklands, a thoughtseize, a street wraith, and a death's shadow, you can lose 15 life by the time turn 2 comes around. That's enough to make Death's Shadow an 8/8 on turn two, and you already have a 2/2 from this guy.

Like I said, I think this guy needs to have 2 mana symbol in the cost. It cleans up the design and keeps this from being a disgusting turn 1 play in a death's shadow deck.

Seems good! Villainous green at its finest, I think.

As others have said, I think this is more complexity than the flavor is worth, especially for a common.

Someone else mentioned this, but you can fail to find a card in your search. You should make it "target opponent searches his or her library...", so that it works as intended. Also, the second ability should be worded "Activate this ability only if an opponent controls the chosen one."

EDIT: I believe I misunderstood what the second ability was meant to do. If you meant for the ability to be able to activate all the time, then when the chosen one is in play you can't activate it, I would word it as: "You may not activate this ability if an opponent controls the chosen one."

I think you can have first strike be written without the capital F. Other than that, seems fine. You may want to make his attack trigger a "you may" ability, since right now you'd have to destroy your own artifact or enchantment if you had one when he attacked. Which, I suppose, could be more flavorful if you wanted to spin it that way.

I'm sorry! I didn't see that sandwiched in there between the big card post and the challenge. I wasn't trying to ignore you or anything.

As for the card, I think it's very straightforward. It could be very good in a forced-draw deck, maybe a grixis Fevered Visions kind of deck. I like it! Has potential for build-around, but is also just good on its own.

EDIT: I just had a fun idea that I figured I'd suggest. You could add a clause at the end of the ability: "Then, if that player is an opponent, you gain 1 life." So it has the flavor of stealing the life from your opponents for you to use. It does mean that you'd be getting a serious advantage out of the card, since you effectively don't lose life from it, but I figured it could be interesting for flavor and for multiplayer, which seemed to be your target.

Very clever! I love the flavor here. One of the best entries so far.

@Inverness: A fair point, but with 2 mana symbolPhyrexian Black ManaPhyrexian Black Mana, you lose the option of a straight up cost analogue to Thoughtseize. Also, Death's Shadow is just one archetype, and it's just one archetype at this moment in time. True, it's possibly the most dominant archetype right now, but there are answers, like Condemn. But I'll consider it.

@huw: I gotta admit, your entry is prolly gonna win. I remember when Korlash, Heir to Blackblade was spoiled, a friend of mine told me he wanted to build a deck around it that heavily abused Raise Dead. Your card looks like it could slot right in that deck easily.

Yeah, I know how you feel. You want the card to be compared to Thoughtseize, and it doesn't work as well if the mana cost isn't similar. While I don't necessarily like mixing Phyrexian and normal mana, it might be doable if you lower the creature's stats to 1/1 and drop one of the black phyrexian symbols (for a total cost of Phyrexian Black ManaBlack mana symbol, with a 1/1 body and the same effect).

@inverness: This currently doesn't work the way you want it to. Right now, if you had 9 poison counters and cast a spell, you wouldn't meet the requirements of the second half, and would just lose the game. It doesn't even work if you'd get multiple poison counters, as it'll check, see you have 9 counters, then you gain 2, and immediately go to 11 and lose. You want it to say "If you have 10 or more poison counters and would lose the game, you win the game instead."

Wed, 2017-07-05 09:19
thehuw's picture

No card should have Phyrexian mana in its cost. It's a terrible mechanic and I hope both design and development are ashamed of it - development for making a mechanic entirely based around letting mono-green decks cast black removal spells, and design for apparently turning in something even worse that needed replacing.

Quite aside from its badness as a mechanic, though, I can't think of a single thing in Magic that's had a worse impact on custom design as a whole. I don't know whether it's down to the fact it looks cool, or because its nature as a mana symbol rather than a keyword means people don't consider it a real mechanic, but it's everywhere, and it sucks. People use it as <redacted> seasoning; 90% of the designs that use it don't need it.

With this design in particular, it only makes the Phyrexian component work by adding a normal colored symbol. Yep, the only thing that makes this infectious garbage fire of a mechanic reasonable is combining it with the thing it's supposed to replace.

@SilverSoul.SB: I don't know if this really qualifies as an Un-card despite the silly flavor, since it doesn't break any of the design rules of black-border Magic. In black-border, though, I think this could win as early as turn two in mono-red with the right setup:

T1: land, Chrome Mox imprinting a red card, red one-drop creature, WAN1
T2: Tibalt

(A slower (and Modern-legal) variant could run Bomat Courier in place of the Chrome Mox.)

@thehuw it's more for the reference than the effect, this has been done before in unsets with Uktabi Kong and the upcoming vanilla mythic in unstable, both black border by rules but silver by idea.

@Ziolang: That's too powerful, I think. You could target your own creature to just draw two cards for two mana. I would change it to "target creature you don't control".

@jacqui-pup: Didn't see your comment on my card until now. The reason the cat queen doesn't have the same ability as the tokens is that she's not a warrior, so her skills are different. Being immune to counterspells and being able to destroy artifacts and create an army is more her speed.

I'm kinda debating whether my card is too powerful though. I know it's a big splashy mythic, so it might just be me.
