Announcing Obrun

Set Name: Obrun
Designed and Developed by: Kiku
Cards: 266
Three-Letter Abbreviation: OBR
Set File Release: August

Obrun is a sword and sorcery based set heavily inspired by the older days of magic. The world is full of fantasy tropes, wizards, goblins, spells, knights, dragons, and rogues. The people of Obrun lead a simpler life in a time where the horse drawn carriage is relatively high tech. Spells are the primary focus here, the wizards of arcane colleges have studied many different schools of magic.

This set will feature a much higher power level for instants and sorceries than we see nowadays, we can do better Cancel. In a lot of ways it's looking back on the good old days of MtG, while trying to let creatures still be relevant to some extent. There will be no mythics, and it will feature White mana symbolBlue mana symbolBlack mana symbolRed mana symbolGreen mana symbol instead of Alternate earth mana symbolAlternate pink mana symbolAlternate purple mana symbolAlternate yellow mana symbolAlternate orange mana symbol.

- Ancient Visions should say "...conduit, instead scry 2, then draw a card." (Careful Consideration)
- Nostalgic Ruins needs a period at the very end, and Mastery isn't capitalized in Spell mastery.
- Skilled Analyst's FT should have either a period or a semicolon (or ellipses, that works too) after "I see"; having a comma there is grammatically wrong.

Cool. I feel like conduit will lead to a lot less attacking then in a normal limited format.

Big surprise, but I like Depth Delver

A card named "Depth Delver" who neither has delve nor is related to swimming. Confusing... but nitpicky. I love the card. Would play.

I'll just assume you got the joke and are being intentionally dense.

Kiku: I am kind of concerned about how limited is going to play here. Most of these creatures seem like rather poor attackers and removal is presumably quite good... how is Green mana symbol supposed to win?

Isn't Whisperlit Wanderer and Shepard of Lost Souls in the same set a bit to on the nose for token strategy?

Uninspired is certainly a name. Nashor cares about any of your creatures being tapped, Spectre cares about itself, and Swordsman also cares about itself but doesn't have the pseudo.

At least the uninspired pseudo lives up to its name...?

I love the Wizard/Cat tribal in Blue mana symbolBlack mana symbol though.

Why does uninspired sometimes care about itself, sometimes everything, and then other times not exist? More on this at 11

Honestly I do not like this way of spoiling a set, you're just dumping cards without commentary on why they're important, and are not answering any questions or addressing any feedback. This makes it hard to stay interested in the set.

@Neo: I can understand that, I will try to answer some of the questions so far.

Spoiler:
@jaqui: I am definitely hoping that the limited format will be different than usual, conduit will slow down some of the attacking that would normally happen, and creatures are generally not as strong as spells. I have given green a few larger creatures, but in general, they will be a weaker color here because they are creature based. Glad you like cat/wizard archetype.

@fluffy: Any proofreading would be very helpful and appreciated.

@Guitarweeps: Yes, that is definitely too much. I made this weaker version of it here.

@Ziolang: Right now, I'm basing the wording for conduit on kicker cards like Demonic Collusion and Blood Tribute. The wording you suggested would also work, and is shorter, will consider.

@HerziQuerzi/ThisisSakon: Eyyyyyyyyyyy I messed up. Swordsman should have it, and Nashor doesn't make sense with the keyword right now, so I changed it here.

MoreCards

While most colors will be fairly passive, Green mana symbol/Red mana symbol specifically have uninspired triggers meant to reward a more aggressive deck to create additional variance in the format.

It's Bobcat. Significantly easier to trigger Pain Seer. Encourages drafting the Blue mana symbol/Black mana symbol cat wizard deck.

Some combat tricks in the set have conduit, making them very good defensively, but weaker on the attack. Creatures with vigilance can help cast these conduit tricks even on offense, and being very useful to apply pressure while still holding conduit spells up defensively.

I want creatures to still be good, but not to overwhelm the instants and sorceries.

Many creatures either serve to make the instants and sorceries better to include in your deck.

For removal, my goal is to have good removal available that can deal with bombs, but to still have it cost enough that it requires some investment.

Many creatures get significantly better in a deck with lots on instants and sorceries, like the Blue mana symbol/Red mana symbol prowess strategy.

Weird idea for a mana dork, you can tap it for mana before casting a conduit spell to also have it be the conduit. Can be pretty good in a deck that plays lots of instants too.

I'll just proof the file when it comes out, less of a hassle on my end that way.

How about "Motivated" for Uninspired?

Uninspired is not a good name for the mechanic, but it feels the most fitting to me.

MoreCards

A number of cards are variations on famous instants and sorceries.

Spell mastery turns a number of cards into more powerful versions of themselves.

Blue plays a pretty heavy lategame strategy, with counters to slow the enemy down, and draw to turn the corner.

There are a handful of cards that help enable uninspired creatures to turn sideways without getting in combat.

Multicolor cards make an appearance, the format has strong fixing with common dual lands, and these can provide incentive to splash.

Even the bomb rare creatures usually try to incorporate instants and sorceries somewhere.

Sweepers can help deal with swarming strategies like Red mana symbol/White mana symbol Go Wide and White mana symbol/Black mana symbol Tokens.

Vigilance helps enable aggression even when playing with conduit cards.

I'm just gonna come out and say it. Uninspired is an uninspired name for that mechanic. "It's reverse inspired" doesn't mean it makes flavorful sense. The name of a mechanic should convey something about the set, and this is telling me that Obrun is filled with lazy folk who, who apparently are at their best when attacking?

@Ziolang: That's fair, I'm going to try rush for now, uninspired is probably too silly to make it into the final file.

Download for the set file can be found here.

Archetypes

Blue mana symbol/Black mana symbol is probably the most bizarre archetype, I just designed a few wizard/cat synergy cards, and thought it would be kind of fun to just make that actually be the archetype.

White mana symbol/Black mana symbol is a fairly standard tokens strategy. I have loved this archetype since the event deck for it helped me get into modern, and wanted to include it here since it's spells generating creatures.

Green mana symbol/Black mana symbol is a very flexible archetype that splashes well if you want to go to three colors by adding Blue mana symbol or Red mana symbol. It fills the graveyard and profits in various ways, spell mastery being the most common.

White mana symbol/Blue mana symbol Is a flicker archetype with lots of good ETB critters. It also has some flexibility with rush cards, since you can use effects like the finch to get a free trigger, or attack with them,
then blink them so they don't die in combat.

Red mana symbol/Black mana symbol is a fairly traditional archetype for the colors, steal and sacrifice.

Blue mana symbol/Red mana symbol has a number of cheap spells and prowess creatures, this critter helps find specific spells.
[/]
Green mana symbol/White mana symbol is the color combo most focused on conduit, with a number of vigilance creatures and powerful conduit/rush cards.

Green mana symbol/Blue mana symbol focuses on getting spell mastery online, with a number of strong spells should it reach that point.

Red mana symbol/White mana symbol Is a go wide archetype, borrowing some cards from the token archetype, as well as red team pump effects.

Red mana symbol/Green mana symbol Is the most focused on rush effects, most of which will be triggered through combat. It's the least interesting in tricky spell-casting, and the most aggressive beatdown deck.
