See the Mersalen design page for more information on the plane. Here is the creative thread as well for reference. Current set file.

Many first sets or maybe previous block sets have a card that eludes to something that is to come. In the case of Mersalen, that is the legendary giant whale that lies dormant. It is so large in fact that the tide is actually caused by its slow breathing. It has been dormant for centuries and is considered deity by the merfolk (as opposed by the Cephalids who consider the squid their deity). The transition to the second set will feature the awakening of this whale.

Another angle is the lost city of the merfolk which has been missing for about the same amount of time the whale has been dormant. Not a coincidence as the whale is actually sleeping over top of it. The merfolk consider it an eternal paradise much like a heaven but do not know where it is located. This creates some tension in the story as they begin to discover that their "deity" actually is blocking their paradise. Others seek it out as well (such as Captain "Bloodeye" Trent) as it is supposed to hold some ancient grand magic and relics.

  • Can be any color or card type
  • Must be Rare or Mythic Rare
  • Should start out eluding to it but can actually represent something directly if executed properly (an emerge spell could work for instance).

The whale is a neat idea but the stickler in me thinks that a whale "breathing" underwater would drown.

It might be a Zombie Whale.

Don't they do that? Maybe I need to science this...

EDIT: So yeah I had no idea lol. So maybe That is why it naps over the ancient city? It provides air? Or even better these whales "breath" aether and the here is a surplus right there.

Give him a colossal snorkel & he should be fine haha. And yeah we can just magic it away i was just throwing a wrench in the gears. Could always just make it a normal leviathan & not a whale.

Players play with the top cards of their library revealed and may play the top card of their library.
Tide-Whenever an opponent casts a spell, if the number of lands is odd, you may pay 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol. If you do, put target non-Whale, non-Squid creature that player controls on top or on bottom of that player's library.
The merfolks' deity survives, asleep in a forgotten corner of the ocean... But her breath still affects Mersalen.

That's interesting.

An idea I thought of that is kinda obvious:

Return all nonland permanents to their owners' hands. If ~ was emerged, create a 10/10 blue legendary Leviathan creature token named Grootslang (/jk).

Neo's card seems like it would lead to unfun scenerios where you are stuck. I would like to see other ideas but for now I am just going to slot Awaken Depths.
