Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and sixty-third challenge!

The winner of the "Holy Shinto!" poll was Ziolang with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

Ziolang wrote:
Card's like Harmless Offering seem totally worthless... until suddenly your opponent harmlessly offers you Demonic Pact. But what about poor old Aggressive Mining? How many times have you found a cool, intriguing or flavorful card, but just couldn't find the right deck for it? Are disappointed that a particular card just doesn't have its own combo buddy? Well not anymore! This contest is to pinpoint a card you feel is lacking its true potential and design a card to "buddy-up" with it. Please note the card you are designing a combo/buddy/assist card for.

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

As Photobucket wants me to pay 400$/year to link to my images, I'll relocate all renders.

You know what, I actually quite like that design. It took me a minute to grasp it, but it's really good with Fist of Suns. I think the only thing I might change about it is to give it an actual mana cost, so that it's not completely useless without the other card. I would either cost it at something outlandish, like 14 mana symbol, or something funny, like 0 mana symbol. Costing it at 0 mana symbol would also give it a fun interaction with Trinisphere as well as just the intended combo with Fist of Suns.

Kudos on a good (IMHO) design.

@sdfkjgh: See, it's not that I didn't get your card combos with Fist of Suns, it's just that it's literally useless in any other context.

@Xenagos: the triggered ability is out of color unless it sacrifices the token at end of combat (which is cute given flickering is possible)

@donovan: Ok, but the Tap symbol means you don't get to attack with this guy. Not a bad thing...

Didn't really have an inspiration for this challenge - for now I'll go with this pair:

Card obviously also combos nicely with stuff like Into the North or Skred. Wording is taken from Painter's Servant (which obviously inspired the cost/stats as well) and Rimefeather Owl. And concerning the used flavor: Yeah, after doing Pixar just recently I really had no choice here Winking smiley

works well with:

Balustrade spy --> mill until you hit enchantment/planeswalker/artifact most likely. Which mills them out.

Enlightened tutor --> tutor for any permanent.

For cards like Souls Fire, non-creature permanents have power and toughness of 0.

I am stuck whether I want it to be able to pacify creatures or not, by turning them into enchantments. I will probably change it to "any instances in the text of..."

Daring Sleuth is, from a flavor standpoint, one of my favorite cards ever. Sadly, it's largely unplayable because it completely lacks evasion and isn't all that difficult to kill.

Fortunately, this card remedies at least one of those things.

Neverwhere Journal 1 mana symbol
Artifact - Clue Rare
Blue mana symbol, Sacrifice Neverwhere Journal: Up to one target creature can't be blocked this turn.
Whenever you would investigate, if Neverwhere Journal is in your graveyard, you may instead pay Blue mana symbol. If you do, return it to the battlefield.

The idea of variant nontoken Clues was something I wish Shadows block had explored a bit. The trick here is to be able to turn any investigate trigger into an Artful Dodge - for just Blue mana symbolBlue mana symbol per turn, you can actually loop this and keep one Bearer of Overwhelming Truths active and unblockable - and an unblockable prowess creature is a pretty scary thing in the color with some of the best anti-removal tech and a wide variety of cheap cantrips. Something like

T3: pay Blue mana symbol to sac this, Sleuth transforms, swing in with Bearer holding up Blue mana symbol for a Force Spike or Apostle's Blessing (or just an instant-speed cantrip if your opponent's tapped out), then pay a third Blue mana symbol to have the investigate trigger retrieve this instead of making a normal Clue

Probably also worth noting the closest Yugioh equivalent for that is Convulsion of Nature which 'solves' the problem by physically turning the deck upside down. Unless you want to head straight into Un-card territory I think Gurfle's implementation is pretty good as is.

That would be very not feasible due to the extra awkwardness of having to lift your library up and slide out the bottom card or having to crane your head every other turn.

@Cajun: the fact that you're FORCED to play the bottom card if it matches is really interesting. However more work may need to be done so as to not cause a feel-bad at matching a land, unless you're ok with such a small sacrifice.

Also, do you think that maybe a limiting factor is needed to prevent the ability triggering off of its own trigger?

While I do think it's technically feasible to play with the bottom revealed A) that'd be a pain in the behind, and B) that's not how the card worked in my head, so it isn't how it works here.
