Amonkhet Styles - Aftermath and Invocations

While we wait for the Snake god to be revealed in about six weeks, I rebuilt the Aftermath frames from the better references. Supports hybrid/multicolor/artifact, identities and tombstones, doesn't have land frames or p/t boxes. The bottom frame hybrid is 'sideways' but you can set the blending to vertical to put it normally. Let me know if there's any bugs or complaints other than the general design of Amonkhet frames.

Rhonas finally decided to show his ugly mug, so Invocations is now a go:

Name and cost cartouches are fully scripted, and there is a style option to snap to the name or extend it for nonexistent mana costs. There is a casting cost field at the beginning of the typeline that can be used as an identity dot, since they appear to just be using the mana symbol.

The glyphs and a few new ones have been mapped to these keys for those who want the full invocation. As far as I can tell, the only rule is that the names/types start and end with | and the rest is random. For those who hate this font, there is a style option to use Beleren or Papyrus instead.

Additional style options are Silver Border that turns the gold border silver, normal rarity which shows the normal symbol instead of the nested watermarks, and Masterpiece rarity which gives the cards a separate collector number and with minor modification lets them show up in packs as Masterpieces. Currently, these Masterpiece still use the same symbol as the set and are still listed as common/uncommon/rare, which will be addressed in Mainframe. Those solutions are a bit too involved for this template.Due to an oversight, this is not working properly and has been temporarily removed.

Download and Install Instructions
Invocation Zip File
Unzip the file, then open Invocation.tff and hit the Install button.
Move magic-m15-invocation.mse-style and magic-mana-small-invocation.mse-symbol-font into your MSE/data folder.
Optional: Move "packs" into MSE/data/magic.mse-game and if you downloaded the original version without a backup and need a default pack file back.

Are these templates that high res or is my phone playing tricks on me?

There are some very high res UBR splits but I mostly used the basic m15 frames to make the frame consistent.

I know Amonkhet only has instant and sorcery aftermath cards, but I'd like the option to make creatures. Do you think it would be possible to add a P/T box?

Cajun's picture

It's mostly an aesthetic issue (and aftermath not working with creatures), they get really cramped with p/t boxes on top of the rest. I'll look into an update for that and colored borders after finals.

Invocation frame is finally up, previews and links in op.

There is also the issue of creatures, lands, and artifacts tapping. As long as only one half is a permanentit will be fine, but otherwise you get the same problem with flip cards in that you can't tell with is which.

I completely agree. For my design idea I was only going to make the top half of the card a permanent and the bottom half either an instant or sorcery. This would follow the typical tap and untapped framing with the art upright when untapped.

Is there a relatively quick and dirty way to get these Invocation mana symbols to display in the mana cost for another frame? They'd be perfect for a masterpiece idea I have for a block I'm working on but right now they look off only appearing in the text box.

In the mana cost field of your template you also need to use magic-mana-small-invocations.mse-symbol-font. I don't know of a template that lets you swap out the main cost symbols but if it has that, make a copy of that folder except replace 'small' with 'large'.

Using a token like Mouth to Feed is probably better than trying to make part of it a creature.

Hi, sorry but for some reason the Invocations style isn't working. I keep getting this error:

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I would say redownload the zip first. The cause of that would be a specific line being corrupted. I just redownloaded it to check and everything's working until I change that line. If it's still broken we can try to fix your style or I can upload a masterpiece-less version.

Aight, I haven't been able to reliably replicate the issue, but I think it has to do with other templates not using the same sort function, so it gets a little screwy alongside other templates. If you are having this problem, here is the invocation folder without any masterpiece scripting. In a few days I'll see if some new functions will fix the issue, but my guess is this won't get fixed without additional mods and will have to wait for M15 Mainframe.

The aftermath frame doesn't support the land texture border. I made an aftermath card where the top part was a land, but I had to photoshop in the land border.

Also, is there any possibility of getting P/T added to the aftermath frame or at least the top half? Please.

Found the issue on Invocations, they were working due to a line of code I thought I deleted. As Masterpieces won't work in packs without several edits and only having the Masterpiece count on one frame screws up the numbers, it has been removed from Invocations, but Mainframe will return the functionality to this and all frames. This was supposed to be a preview of that but it's a bit complicated and I'd rather get all those edits in in one swoop. Here is the updated template with a default pack file for anyone who replaced theirs without a backup.

To-do list for Aftermath 1.1:
Land cards
Silver borders
See if pt boxes can get crammed somewhere

Anything else? Note that I can't start on this until at least next Wednesday.

I have two problems and would like to hear if anyone could help me A happy smile

1. After unzipping and installing the file in the MSE folder I cannot find the template in existing MSE files.
2. If I create a new MSE file I CAN(!) find the Aftermath template but it doesn't show very well. It's a blank white picture.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Does anyone know what I (and others in my situation) could do the remedy this?

Kind regards

The usual first step the check for is "Is MSE in Program Files?". Next, check "Is there two different installs of MSE?" In either situation, you'll have massive problems with trying to find the thing. This sounds like the latter situation, so just make sure your mse.exe is in the place where your data folder that's actually being edited by the installer is.

It is in the program files

Windows8_OS (C:) -> Users -> Patrick -> Documents

Should I uninstall the program and re-install it saving it on some other spot on the computer?

Cajun's picture

Program Files is a different folder than Documents. If you only have a single mse.exe then you might have an older game file, which there's been a few others with. That's solved by getting the update from additional downloads. The console tab should be able to narrow down the problem otherwise.

I am not sure if I only have one but I am also not very good at this.

When I go into the Start menu and search for "Magic Set Editor" two results is shown: A red MSE logo and a yellow folder.

If I open "Show file destination" on both of them they are placed two different places on the PC.

The red Magic Set Editor logo is placed in: Windows8 -> Program Data -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Start Menu -> Programs

The yellow folder is called Magic Set Editor 2 and is placed in the documents.

So I might have two different Magic Set Editors installed? One original version and one version of Magic Set Editor 2?

@Kassow-Rossing, @Cajun
When you search for something in the Start menu, every match will be listed. The search found the shortcut "Magic Set Editor" (wich is most likely a shortcut to mse.exe, but not the actual program) as well as the Magic Set Editor folder (wich is most likely located in program files). Even if you get two results doesn't it mean that they are located in different folders. mse.exe is allways located within the "Magic Set Editor 2" folder. If you find anything somewhere else, it is most likely a shortcut to start up the program (unless you have already messed up your computer plenty).
Find the Magic Set Editor 2 folder and use that as reference...

If you have trouble finding the Program Files folder, go to the left bar of the windows explorer window and look for "windows(C:)" or a similar folder (you can also find windows(C:) by selecting it within the "My Computer" or "This Computer" folder.
The path to the mse folder is "C:\programfiles\Magic Set Editor 2/".

In the Control Panel I can only find one Magic Set Editor file which can be deleted. Shouldn't this mean I only have one version installed on the PC?

And if my Magic Set Editor 2 folder is in Documents, shouldn't this mean it is not in program files?

So what is wrong? Why can't I see the Aftermatch template when I open a MSE file?

Wed, 2017-05-03 15:07
Mahx Michael
Mahx Michael's picture

@Kassow-Rossing
Aparently, everything is wrong with your mse.
The "Magic Set Editor 2" folder should be located in "C:/programfiles/" and should among others contain "mse.exe" and a folder named "data" that should contain all the template folders.
If you structure it like this, it should either work perfectly, or I recomend you compleatly remove the program an install the entire thing over again with additional downloads and all... And this time, make sure the program is installed in your program files folder!
And yes, if something is inside a folder named "Documents", that means it is not inside a folder named "program files"...

And never randomly delete files just because you can! Anything can be deleted if you just click "delete item", exe files are not any different. Only delete files you want to remove, ok?
EDIT: Never mind the last part, I just scrolled past the word "deleted" and raged for it. Didn't understand at first that you where referring to the "installed programs" list in the control panel.
Yes, the contol panel lists the program "Magic Set Editor 2" wich is actually mse.exe (only that it gives itself the name "Magic Set Editor 2" because it is a specified property). If the file you are looking at has an exe ending or is categorized as a program (if extensions isn't enabled), the file is a program file. If not, its most likely a shortcut to that program. Do you understand now?

If you show file location and find mse.exe in your Program Files, you can just drag it out into your MSE folder in Documents. I had this problem myself, that does solve a lot of problems.

Should I be worried it will permanently remove any files/sets I've made when I uninstall the program? I have the files/sets in a Dropbox folder.

aight, spelling this out plainly as I can.

You are looking for "mse.exe" We have established the rest of the folder is in the right place, we need to make sure mse.exe is and that there is only one.
If mse.exe isn't in Program Files and there is only one, the most likely culprit is an outdated MSE. Get the M15 update from additional downloads. and install it. This should update magic.mse-game
If it still isn't working, I need to see MSE's console tab to see what is causing the error.

I already have the M15 update and all other updates. I've kept updating the program for many years.

I am now 100 % sure I only have one folder with MSE-files installed on the PC: The one saved onto the Documents. I believe I installed it there once because I was told not to install it on the Program Files. The only other place I have anything related to MSE is in Dropbox, where I keep the sets I've made.

In the one MSE folder I have on the PC there are five icons:
data (yellow icon looks like a folder)
mse (white blue icon looks like a squared program)
mse (red icon looks like Magic Set Editor)
unis000.dat (White blank page)

DO NOT SAVE ANYTHING IN DOCUMENTS!!!
When you start the installer for MSE, select "programfiles" for download destination (it should be default actually). Then find the data folder that will be created in the same folder as the program, for the additional downloads.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
.
.
1. I un-installed all MSE files and programs on my PC.

2. I re-installed MSE following this guide:

http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/node/13892
This means I installed the program on the desktop, downloaded and installed Pichoro's package, downloaded, unzipped and moved to the "data" folder the Amonkhet package. I now only have one MSE installed on the PC and it's on the desktop. However I do have some MSE set files in Dropbox.

3. When I start the new MSE program I can choose "New set" or "Open set". If I choose to start new set I can choose "Modern Style", "Flip cards", "M15 Aftermath" and so on. But not M15 style.

4. When I choose M15 Aftermath for example I can see only white blanks. Even when I create a new card within that set. The "Console" is giving me some issue alerts. They are the following:

(Red ! symbol) Variable not set: card_number_m15

(Red ! symbol) Parameter field: card has no member 'card code text'

That's it. Anyone know what I can do to use MSE properly with both M15 and the aftermath templates?

@Kassow-Rossing
I think it would help if you go install one of Pichoro's newest templates and choose in the installer to update/reinstall magic game.

  1. Download the Magic Update - September 9th 2015, from Pichoro's additional downloads.
  2. Run the installer and select, reinstall on the "Game Files" in the "Magic" folder.

Wed, 2017-05-10 12:19

Didn't work. But this might be because I couldn't clik on "Reinstall" because it was grey'ed out.

I already had all the templates installed but I did what you said and got the Magic Update - September 9'th 2015. I clicked on "Game files" but wasn't offered to click on the Reinstall icon. Instead I clicked on OK. Was this correct? It installed 17 changes and the M15 template is still not available while the Aftermath template still doesn't look right.

Then I started a new MSE file (new set) and was offered the same options as before: Modern, Split, Promotional and everything older.

Have you made sure all the template folders are inside the data folder that lies together with the mse.exe? Both mse.exe and the data folder should be located in a folder named "Magic Set Editor 2", no mather where you put that folder.
