Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and sixty-first challenge!

The winner of the "Coloring Outside the Lines" poll was ZephyrPhantom with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

ZephyrPhantom wrote:
We've seen Greek Gods, we're going to see Egyptian Gods, so let's see different gods! Design a God card that represents a deity from a culture other than Greece or Egypt!

Note: I suggest you avoid Roman gods since many are directly based on Greek ones.

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

@Daij_Djan, assuming if we write notes for our submissions, such as naming the deity that we are representing and possibly a few details on them if they are lesser known, they will be included?

@Cajun, I think this is more white than green, if not more white than black.

@TheBrokenUrn, A very nice card, I enjoy that he doesn't have indestructible, since Norse gods can get killed.

If you don't explicitly give it the type God, it has to very clearly be based on a God; providing a link or explanation will go a long way.

Pretty sure paying to break the rules is as Black mana symbol as it gets, Green mana symbol was mostly a greenback reference.

But yes it does say God card, so presumably it should have the God subtype. Real entry then:

Old entry
Balder (aka Baldr or Baldur) is one of the three sons of Odin and Frigg. He represents peace, light, wisdom, and beauty. Frigg's ability to see the future was passed on to Balder, so each night he would dream of what was to come. At one point, Balder began having a recurring nightmare in which he would die. After hearing this, Frigg told all things that no harm should come to Balder, and they listened. However, Frigg did not tell the innocent mistletoe this, because she saw no need. What harm could a mistletoe do?

From that day on, Balder was invincible and people (Balder included) found great joy in throwing rocks and shooting arrows at him, which would do him no harm at all.

Enter Loki, who was very jealous of Balder. After discovering Balder's one weakness, Loki put together an arrow from mistletoe. He told Balder's blind twin brother Hoder to join the fun and shoot an arrow at Balder. When Hoder shot the arrow, Balder was killed. Hoder would later be slain as revenge for killing his brother, even though Loki tricked him into doing it.

@sdfkjgh Honestly, it's a nightmare to read in the promo frame, it's in the wrong colors, and it's way, way to powerful. This type effect is normally in blue, and normally is strictly one-time effects. You're locking down a card each player's upkeep for only 4 mana. Screw using him to attack, I'm going to just buff him and lock down the opponent. (Even considering that he self distructs, that's only after you've blocked 15 (15!!!) cards for no cost at all.)

Completely unsurprising, a card based on Quetzalcoatl from the Aztec Pantheon! God of Wind and Wisdom. I actually was rather torn on how I would color him, but I decided on Abzan due to the ability alone, which references his connection to humanity, the underworld and his "wind breastplate" and Esper didn't seem to quite fit theme. That, and I also wanted to bring the god that created the 5th sun (current era) world humans from the remains of the beings from the 4th.

Fixed! I hope it is more legible and the new keyword Relinquish is a bit more balanced while keeping in flavor.

Aledie, the Pale Marquis 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol
Legendary Enchantment - Aura Mythic Rare
Enchant black creature
Enchanted creature gets +3/+1 and has menace.
1 mana symbolBlack mana symbol, Discard a card: Choose one -
• Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.
• Target creature gains indestructible until end of turn.
When enchanted creature leaves the battlefield, you may put Aledie on top of its owner's library.

Aledie here is based on Baron Samedi, one of the chief loa (godlike spirit beings that serve as intermediaries between humans and a supreme deity) in Haitian voodoo. He's best known as a patron of death and the dead, but, despite some negative media portrayals, he's by no means evil. He has power over life as well as death, and it's said that no mortal can die if Samedi refuses to dig their grave.

I wanted a different, flavorful spin on a god mechanic here, and drew my inspiration from voodoo mythology: the loa rarely manifest physically of their own accord, instead doing their work by possessing or "riding" human priests and sorcerers. Thus, in Magic terms, Aledie is an Aura, latching on to any creature that shares his colors and allowing it to "cast" a couple of potent "spells", much like a Spellshaper. Aledie himself is almost immortal, but killing the creature he's possessing will temporarily banish him back to the spirit world. Only a trained exorcist (or, um, Naturalize, I guess) can bring him to a longer-lasting end.

This card was originally black-green for "circle of life" flavor, but mechanically nothing about it really needed to be green, so I've changed to mono-black.

If I were to make other loa, they would probably take very similar forms to this - enchant a creature that shares a color, grant a P/T boost and a keyword, spellshape two different effects, and optionally recur to the top of your library when the host dies.

I used to hate GoT when I first saw it, now look at me, designing cards inspired by it...

There are many religions in Game of Thrones, some worship seven Old Gods, some worship seven New Gods, others say that there aren't seven Gods, just one that wears seven different faces, hence the Many-Faced God. So I made this as top-down as it gets. More info here.

Korakhos: If there was every a good reason to play God tribal EDH, I think this creature would be it. Neat concept.

Also a fan of Huw's Aledie and Aarg's Balder. Very creative designs we're seeing here IMHO.

@sdfkjgh: Just a friendly suggestion, but I don't think white text on a light-colored card art is easy to read. Also, I believe Abomination Unto Nuggan would need to specific having some sort of count, because as is I don't think it works as intended.

@Yoshi: What's the deal with the ooo o o oo o?

@Ziolang: "unless it's a creature."

@Zephyr: The render is a bit tragic, I'll admit. Shame that you can't alter the font color on MSE, especially for promo/big art cards. How would you go about matching the flavor of Nuggan?

I'm not familiar enough with Discworld but I would suggest just getting rid of the 2nd line about remembering how many times you've used the first ability and tweaking the third ability accordingly. For this entry, I'll be taking a more obscure god from old Norse lore: Höðr, or Hoder as I'll be anglicizing him. Aargh's entry already touched upon Hoder: he is a blind god who was deceived by trickster Loki into murdering his brother Balder, and for that he was slain by Balder descendants. At a cursory glance, this is most that the Edda gives of Hoder as well; however, it is also written in it that Hoder, along with Balder, will return to life after the end of the world.

For this entry, an expy of Hoder, I'll be stretching things a little further. Hoder's call to fame is a mistake, one could say a sin. His nature in memory is to err, and so he represents human failure, shortcoming, stupidity and, well, blindness. But he comes back from Hel after apocalypse; that is the honour that the inscribers of lore give him. And so he also represents forgiveness, redemption for the dark marks in our histories - for the accounts of the world after Ragnarök speak of no malice between him and Balder.

Hoder the blind. Hoder the returned. Hoder of mistakes and Hoder of moving past them. Hoder, god of redemption. This conception is the basis for my entry. It might veer a little off-base, but eh.
