Mersalen Task 16a: Arcuns Unite!

This task will be to design an uncommon for each of the ten archtypes. These uncommons will serve as a card to push forward those archtypes. Each will be hybrid of the color pair of that arcthype. Here is a list of the archtypes.

  • White/blue mana symbol: Tempo
  • Blue/black mana symbol: Mill
  • Black/red mana symbol: Ransack
  • Red/green mana symbol: Ramp stompy
  • Green/wite mana symbol: Toughness matters
  • White/black mana symbol: Tokens/ghosts
  • Blue/red mana symbol: Pingthirst
  • Black/green mana symbol: Enters/leaves battlefield
  • Red/white mana symbol: Vehicle multiple pilots
  • Green/blue mana symbol: Gleam

Design Guidance

  • Can be any card type.
  • Must be uncommon.
  • Must be hybrid.
  • Supports the archtype for that color pair. High synergy, not something that is "good in any deck".

If a spell or ability would put one or more cards from an opponent’s library into his or her graveyard, put that many cards plus two instead.

Ziolang - How many triggers would you get from this though? Even dedicated vehicle decks only run like 2-4 in limited. Maybe it should be an attack trigger instead?

Alex - Honestly don't know how to evaluate this. Seems either to reliant on other cards or maybe too good if support is there.

Mario - Hmmm I think we might have enough tappers already. These are interesting effects with things like vehicles around.

Just realized I could probably just:

Whenever ~ crews a vehicle, create a 1/1 [whatever tokens we have] creature token tapped and crewing that vehicle. (The token adds its power toward the vehicle's crew cost.)

When ~ enters the battlefield, target creature becomes the color of your choice until end of turn.

The deckhand could probably just create a token when tapped. You can crew a vehicle even if it is already crewed so that part is really not needed.

The arcuns should usually be payoff cards not enablers. Things like the deckhand and aurora fish enable a strategy but don't push you in the direction to play it.

Some notes from cards in the file already:

Dangerous Waters seems like it would actually be great for the Blue/red mana symbol card if it triggers at EOT or something.

Whenever a creature you control dies, put a +1/+1 counter on ~.

Seems to do what we want for the theme. Gets both triggers when you emerge.

Pretty good payoff card. Although I think flash could be replaced with something that does more with a potential beater. I think some type of evasion or maybe hexproof. Could use the flying when attacking ability although that steals from the frogs (could be a frog actually).

notes: pretty basic mana ramp/fat dude. Pretty decent support for the tide & toughness archetypes. Has flavor that makes sense too.

@GW:

-Dementia Wave: Compared to Jace's Erasure, I traded consistency for greater milling and flexible mana cost, but then I realize this doesn't work with ransack, except if it exiles a chosen card then mill the rest (though that would change the mechanic's functionality.)

Anyway, here's the newer version, could milling by itself yet also rewards you for milling with other cards.

At the beginning of your upkeep, target player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
Whenever an instant or sorcery card is put into an opponent’s graveyard from his or her library, exile that card. Until end of turn, you may cast that card.

-Dangerous Waters: This doesn't feel blue at all. The original version is harder to activate, whilst the current version is too easy to get the big token(s)

-Reflection Elemental: Hexproof feels too good when flying is a bit stretchy for green, maybe something like "~ can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less"?

@Horizons: While it's a good card, I'm afraid it doesn't fit this challenge since Green/blue mana symbol is about gleam.

@Horizons: Creates an infinite loop with itself, I think, 'cause it counts towards tide and thus switches tide off when tide switches it on, thus switching itself off and tide back on...

A little amused by MaRo's Innistrad storm scale article where he says Emerge design space is limited because it can only appear on big creatures.

No longer a tapper but still good combat tempo. Fits in both monoblue and monowhite. Now can untap vehicles, or crew for vehicles!

@Horizons - Nice loop!

@Alex - I like the elemental although maybe it shouldn't have haste. Also the land should gain haste so you don't have the situation where there is a dispute over whether you chose the land you just played (or MTGO confusion). That is why awaken had that.
Green gets "attacking only flying" every so often and frogs make sense for that so I think it works.

@justnobody - Really? I wonder why it wouldn't occur to them to use this design space? Fine by me. We will mine it if they won't!

@mario - I liked the tapping part too so considering moving one of the other tappers to the next set. We actually don't have a sentient flying race. Birds are the only flyers so far. If it has the tapping then it doesn't need evasion really as it gets evasive by tapping stuff down.

Number of lands on the battlefield is odd. Turtle switches on, becomes an Island. Turtle now counts towards number of lands on the battlefield. Number of lands on the battlefield is even. Turtle switches off. Turtle no longer counts towards number of lands on the battlefield. Number of lands on the battlefield is odd...

@Ziolang That alone is the problem. Creatures can't have land types, just like how lands can't have creature types. By nature of the rules and unique subtypes, having island on your card requires it to be a land.
