Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and fifty-ninth challenge!

The winner of the "Please don't blend your pets" poll was Aarhg with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

Aarhg wrote:
Design a card with a color identity of more colors than the card's colors. For example, Ana Battlemage is a green card, but its color identity is black, blue, and green. Another example is Wandering Fumarole. It's a colorless card, but its color identity is blue and red.

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

@Fermat: The issue with this is that it's a choice that isn't really a choice - the unleash mode is so much better than the non-unleash one that there's no meaningful decision to be made.

Also, um, are you sure you want to call this an "Exhibitionist"?

-Making him a 3/4

I like it, simplistic, with a nice flavor.

Things I'm considering:

@Gurfle: 2nd ability has some problems. 1st, if anything, the activation cost should be Green mana symbol &/or Black mana symbol, not White mana symbol. White is tertiary (at best) in reanimation/Raise Dead, & even then, it's usually only from gy to bf, or from gy to hand for enchantments only.

So, here's something that was inspired by the Making Magic column of 2/27/17:

Lot of entries for this already, and I think that justifies the first iteration of the good ol' wall of feedback!

WoF
Mort: The Kird Ape-ish buff basically makes this a harder to kill Azure Mage if you're in the right colors. I feel like it might be a tad too resilient when boosted - 4 toughness puts it out of Bolt range and makes it a good blocker as well as a reliable draw engine, which strikes me as a little dangerous at uncommon. I think I'd like this better if it got +2/+0 instead, making it a 2/3 when buffed, which would give it stronger combat chops while also making it a bit easier to get out of the way.

Daij_Djan: Simple and serviceable. I kind of want the firebreathing cost to have some black (or white) in it, since it directly improves how much life you're going to gain, but there's nothing actually wrong with it as-is.

digiman619: The closest equivalent I can think of for this ability is Kessig Wolf Run, which implies that your card is both a little too strong and a little too not rare. Dropping the ability down to +2/+2 or pushing it up higher (or both) seems like it'd make this safer.

ZephyrPhantom: My comments from YMTC:PME still stand, really. Very Jund.

Fermat: Think I like this better than the Exhibitionist (snicker). It encourages nonbasics pretty hard, which I don't really like, but that's a personal quibble - the design itself is generally rather solid.

ALEX Ryugami: The ability could cost 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbol, I think. It'd be two rather awkward mana to get the untap plus the buff each time, and the card's really not good for much without using that ability.

fluffyDeathbringer: Feels a little awkward next to Urborg Elf and Druid of the Anima. The second point of toughness is a marginal upside compared to having to sac it if you want to use it for fixing.

thehuw: Why are you even still here? Go home.

TheBrokenUrn: There are memory issues here, since the color change is permanent and has an effect down the line. This also has the problem of being completely and utterly unplayable if you don't have red mana, to the point where it may as well be a Red mana symbolWhite mana symbol card.

Pixi-Rex: I'd tweak the last ability to grant indestructible until end of turn, to comply with regeneration apparently being phased out over the last few blocks. Given its resilience and its potential as an evasive threat, I'd also be wary of putting this at uncommon - looks rare to me.

Vunik: This isn't a personal attack or anything, but why do you seem to keyword so many abilities that really don't need them? Rootwalla and friends have done just fine without this being keyworded, and I don't see why this card couldn't do the same.

Gurfle: The first ability is deceptively powerful even though it's theoretically symmetrical, but that's alright on a rare legend with an average body - the second, though, is out of color for white. White can reanimate directly to the battlefield with Breath of Life effects, but black and green are the colors that get Regrowth (or Treasured Find, if you like).

Inverness: Cute, but I'm struggling to find justification for the flipside being green when it doesn't actually cost green mana to transform or do anything super green itself. DFCs do get a few seemingly random color changes, though, like with Town Gossipmonger, so maybe this is alright.

sdfkjgh: Needs to have a drawback on it, otherwise it's strictly better than a basic Island. (Not being fetchable does not count as a drawback, by the way.) The Lair subtype feels superfluous, as it only appeared on the original Lair cycle to make the drawback a bit more meaningful; unless there's substantial Lair interaction for some reason, it could probably be cut.

Korakhos: I like Sunblade Elf and friends, and I like this too. I'd like it more if the boosted stats were slightly above the curve rather than just on it - I know black doesn't get straight 3/3s for 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbol usually, but this still feels just a tad underwhelming.

As a side note, I view the forum in splitscreen and your signature image is so wide that it fouls up the display width a little. I don't have the authority to mandate this or anything, but could I suggest shrinking it a bit?

Cajun: The ability doesn't really feel white, and repeatable countering seems suspect even when it's activated abilities rather than spells. "Hexproof while tapped" is interesting space to be in, though.

Aarhg: Weird that it's an exile-and-copy rather than something that lets you pseudo-flashback the spell like Sins of the Past, though I'm not sure if your wording is actually more concise. This is a great design, though, and I think the balancing's about right - six mana is into the realm of the big-ticket game-enders already, anyway.

Neottolemo: Sad that the activated ability doesn't trigger prowess. Honestly, this feels like a White/black mana symbol card that randomly costs blue with a blue ability bolted on - the double blue in the casting cost isn't helping that.

aquaumisa: The first ability is really weak compared to the second. Make it +2/+0 or +1/+1, maybe grant another ability (trample?), and that'd be closer to the mark.

@Urn - The way the ability is worded probably makes it vague enough to seem like a permanent change, even if it actually isn't. Also, I believe the proper wording for the ability is "When ~ enters the battlefield, it <blah> end of turn if Red mana symbol was spent to cast it.", which would fulfill the color identity requirement for you without making you forcefully change its color. (Batwing Brume) I'd also suggest changing the second ability to just requiring you to pay Red mana symbol when it dies to get the damage effect.

So here is my first try on the contest (I don't either know why this creature have such a vierd name. I'm trying to put a somewhat wellknown character onto a magic card, wich is difficult, and it's name is a little bit vierd, but here it is):

Alright.

- Green Demon?
- First strike isn't a green ability.
- The first ability is dreadfully undercosted for repeatable 3-damage removal.
- The second ability doesn't actually work the way you want it to within the game proper, or so I've been led to understand. Something something different language name shenanigans. Could someone else elaborate?
- The second ability requires a "shuffle your library" at the end and needs to refer to the tutored card as a card. Thus: "Search your library for a creature card with Deja View in its name, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library."
- We don't know what the intended variety of Deja View creatures is, so the second ability's power level is very difficult to gauge.
- This card has so much going on that it really just should be a rare.

@ Mahx - Lands still have color identity, yes.

Demon Cannon User: Green doesn't normally get first strike, and searching for a nonexistent card that no one can gauge in terms of power or impact is going to cost you votes one way or another. I'd suggest looking for a different green ability or perhaps changing the second ability to be something about first strike instead. (Honestly your card shows all the hallmarks of an attempt to 'translate' a third party's fiction work into an MtG card because it still feels like it's from another medium, as opposed to feeling like a card Wizards would print in Magic. This IMHO is bad design because you want to 'translate' the concept as smoothly as possible.)

If someone could get me a source on "no longer print mana creatures with CMC 1" I'd be very interested tbh because I was personally still designing under the assumption Llanowar Elf was the norm.

EDIT: @Fluffy - I think the intent was to do something like Ajani's Aid. If he's referring to just searching for a part of the name it could still be done, though in MtG I presume it's more of a "Just because it can be done doesn't necessarily mean it should" thing due to said language issues. (Yugioh does it all the time and I don't see it as being particularly hard to put in MTGO)

My understanding is that searching for whole names is fine, but parts of names isn't?

Also, the last time we got a new no-frills one-mana dork was... Avacyn's Pilgrim, apparently. Others like Gnarlroot Trapper and Loam Dryad have some sort of catch or drawback. (http://magiccards.info/query?q=t%3Acreature+o%3A%22add%22+o%3A%22to+your+mana+pool%22+cmc%3D1&v=card&s=edition)

Correct. You can search for full names as these are directly linked to one card, so translating the name doesn't matter. However you can't tutor for names with XYZ in the name, as XYZ might not be used in all translations. You could say "only the official oracle wording counts", but this still is a little weird..

And yeah, there haven't been CMC1 mana dudes for quite some time - not sure if there's an official quote out there, though..

@ fluffy - That's what I thought as well; I'm mainly curious to see if there's an actual rules issue involved or if it's just because localization teams don't feel it's worth taking the additional time to translate accordingly for such a mechanic.

Interesting that 1CMC mana dorks are being phased out, though I suppose when it comes to "make creatures better" WoTC can just do that by powercreeping the P/T vs. CMC ratio. Admittedly curious to know if that's impacted Standard as well.

EDIT: @ Daij - I see. That's an interesting way to handle it IMHO since it seems to account for the fact people of different languages could play together or someone could try to use different language versions of the card in the same deck.

I remember reading that 1CMC mana dorks were a 'swinging pendulum' kind of deal, that they weren't fine for how they wanted to build Standard currently but that they'll probably come back and become the norm again sooner or later, only to go away again as the cycle begins anew, or something. I think it was most likely Sam Stoddard who wrote it, probably one of the latest Mailbag columns.

If I recall correctly, the reason we no longer get Llanowar Elves is something to do with creatures being easier to untap with shenanigans - and, well, probably also because ramp's getting weaker in general (a third land on turn two is apparently something we can't do now without jumping through a hoop, comparing Ruin in Their Wake to our dearly departed Rampant Growth).

Loam Dryad implies they just want green to cast a frickin' two-drop once in a while.

@jacqui - B-b-b-but they killed muh Grizzly Bears, I won't accept any substitutes!

@thehuw - Huh, I hadn't even noticed Rampant Growth variants had taken a hit either! So many changes to design standards and I hadn't even realized them until they were brought up in this conversation; this is the kind of thing that fascinates me as a designer, if I had to be honest.
