Current Set File

One month. One team. One set. (Take two.)

Howdy hey! If you all remember, I attempted a 30-day custom design challenge awhile back, where each person who joined would be on the hook for exactly one card every 24 hours. The set was off to a great start, except the holidays happened and I seem to have a habit of mysteriously disappearing in December and reappearing in January with no recollection of what I had been doing previously. Well... December is long gone, mis amigos! So this time, I'm here to stay.

The rules are the same as last time: Each day, I'll update the thread with a challenge, and each day everyone on the team will submit one card for the challenge. Kind of like the CotW challenges, except you only have a day - and I need those cards, baby! Because when the month (or so) is over, we'll have 240 cards and a completed custom set.

I'm looking for seven other designers at a minimum, but I'll take as many as I can get, provided it's an even multiple of 240 (so 8, 10, or 12 will be optimal). If I can get that many people excited, I'll start up the challenges and we can get this show on the road!

I've also learned a couple of things from last time around:

1. This set is going to need ART, baby. So when you send your suggestions, send 'em with art and FT if possible. The less we have to add flavor at the end, the better.
2. This set is going to need a SKELETON, baby. Last time I tried to assemble a mish-mash of cards, and it worked out pretty averagely. (Averagely?) This time, we're going to skeletonize this fish before we cook it.

Those are the only major changes from last time. Anyone who wants to join is welcome - I look forward to anyone who wants to hop in! You can check the previous thread here to see how things were run last time. In the meantime, let me know if you want to join, and let's start coming up with ideas for a set! (Probably not going to do Egypt this time around...)

I'm in on this one, absolutely! Let me know when you're taking flavor pitches, too, as I have a few concepts I'd be interested in spilling forth. damn it I'm not that patient

Here are a few initial ideas / jumping-off points which I wouldn't mind throwing out there to see if anyone bites:

  • "Soft apocalypse" world. Very Bad Things have happened to this plane, but it was a long while back, and more akin to a long period of stagnation like the Dark Ages than a big honkin' world-ender. We see society in the process of rebuilding itself, striving to learn from the mistakes of the past and rediscovering the knowledge and technology of the old order. The mood here is much more one of wonder and hope than of despair and struggle.
  • Enchantments-matter set, but a different take on it from Theros. I think it's been long enough now for us to take another stab at this concept - off the top of my head, reframing enchantment creatures with Vehicle-inspired tech, having a format that isn't quite as glacial and battlecruisery, a new story angle that isn't quite so adversarial between the mortal and epehemeral realms, and making enchantments matter earlier, rather than leaving it for the last set of an overstretched block.
  • A sciencey world that doesn't focus on artifacts. I'm thinking a transhuman world geared towards weird biology, but any science that isn't engineering has potential here, I think.
  • "Clash of the titans" world for an underappreciated Big Stuff creature type. In the same way that Dragons of Tarkir gave us Dragons and Dragons-matter across all colors and Mious did the same for Angels, perhaps a world focusing on Sphinxes or Wurms or Hydras or even Demons bleeding into all colors. This would be a faction set, I reckon.
  • A desert world, but maybe with themes other than "mana is hard and you can't do anything good ever"? Off the top of my head, maybe society has worked out how to shape the sand into useful stuff, or is formed around rare oases (perhaps not strictly natural ones).

Still open to hearing other pitches, though.

I'm thinking of joining and deliberately focusing on a vanilla-matters vs. having evergreens/abilities matter theme. Perhaps combine with Clash of the Titans + Desert-themed set for a Dune-like environment where pushed P/T vanilla monsters with Muraganda Petroglyphs-esque support tries to smash more crafty ability using nomads? (Could also fit the "soft apocalypse" theme in if the creation of the monsters is what wrecked the plane into its current state.)

Vanilla-matters is a theme that I've always wanted to explore but never really found a way to. Flavorfully it could fit into many different settings, but of huw's suggestions I think it would fall most seamlessly into "Soft apocalypse" or "Clash of the titans". I've recently done a desert world, so I'd like to stay away from that - for reasons that will remain hidden for now, I'd also like to avoid the "enchantment creatures with Vehicle-inspired tech", though I admit it's a relatively interesting idea. @ marioware2 - If we need to stay away from a desert world but perhaps involve a soft-apocalyptic one.... may I suggest Aeratha from Worldbuilding June? I'm willing to retool the premise a bit to have the main sources of hostility be non-sentient monsters dubbed "The Scarred" - I'm not too particularly attached to what mechanics get used aside from a requirement for a life loss subtheme. Perhaps some of the other worlds are worth taking a look at as well.

(To avoid a misunderstanding that happened during Mious, I'd like to also say I think other world ideas can and perhaps should be brought to the table as well. This is merely one possible direction.)

An unstable reality might be cool. (Not like Zendikar - one where the nature of the world, or parts of it, could change at any instant.)

Oh! There's also an interesting sci-fi idea I found once called a Dyson sphere. A set based on a plane there would be different.

(I'll probably come back and flesh these out later.)

Monsters punching holes in a giant dyson sphere and the other inhabitants trying to repair it frantically sounds pretty interesting and morbidly hilarious tbh. Imagine all those monsters living on the barren outside of the sphere trying to punch their way into Pyrulea's verdant horizons?

As the one who pitched the idea, I feel I kindof have to support the Dyson sphere idea. And I'm glad other people like the idea as well!

Also, you're right about the art, Daji, but I feel that we could explain it by the sphere begin massive. Just like how you can't tell the Earth is curved convexly, it's hard to tell that this world is curved concavely. Plus, the star in the center would obscure the sight of the other side, I believe.

Edit: As to how to explain it, I think a simple way is either, as theHuw said, "a wizard did it" or "it was created this way". Who knows, it could be an artificial plane, similar to Mirrodin and Serra's Realm.

Maybe I'm boring but vanilla Pyrulea sounds neat. As long as we can keep man-made stuff out of space it would feel pretty magic-ey. Druids and nature and harmony to help sell the giant forests thing

I think that vanilla Pyrulea is a good choice, especially since we'll still have a lot of creative freedom with the more finer details. After all, there's no indication of the factions of the plane, if there are any, or if there's any "modern" civilization on it (by modern, I mean planes similar to Ravnica, Innistrad, and Kaladesh).

You all have no idea how much I'm looking forward to this.

On the record, though, I think it would be best if we all agreed to take a page out of Innistrad's books with regards to color distribution. Just as Innistrad ran the risk of being black dominated due to its theme, I feel that we should make a conscious effort to avoid putting too much green in Pyrulea. In general, I'd recommend that we try to design with the idea that "if it can be done in a color other than green, use that color instead".

@ Nilbog - I think it's pretty simple to avoid overfocus on Green if we appropriate the other colors accordingly, such as:

Red mana symbol and Blue mana symbol: Relevant to the gravity and general physics of the sphere.

White mana symbol: The light sources/'sun'(?) on the plane.

Black mana symbol: The monsters trying to burrow from the dark outside into the plane's bright inside (maybe they need light as sustenance?)

Just a quick example but I think it conveys the point.

Okay, guys! To start things off, we have a challenge for a White common. Here's a loose skeleton for white as-is:

White Skeleton
CW01: Creature, small (mechanic 1)
CW02: Creature, small (mechanic 2)
CW03: Creature, small
CW04: Creature, small
CW05: Creature, small
CW06: Creature, small/medium
CW07: Creature, medium (mechanic 1)
CW08: Creature, medium
CW09: Creature, medium
CW10: Creature, medium
CW11: Creature, medium/large (mechanic 2)
CW12: Creature, medium/large
CW13: Instant
CW15: Instant
CW16: Sorcery
CW17: Sorcery
CW18: Aura
CW19: Flex
CW20: Flex

Luckily, we have twelve people and there are twelve creatures for white! That's easy. I'll randomly assign each person to one now:

Challenge 1 wrote:
  • marioware2 (CW09: Creature, medium)
  • HerziQuerzi (CW02: Creature, small (mechanic 2))
  • Thehuw (CW11: Creature, medium/large (mechanic 2))
  • Grishnax (CW03: Creature, small)
  • Sylphiod (CW05: Creature, small)
  • ZephyrPhantom (CW06: Creature, small/medium)
  • Vunik (CW12: Creature, medium/large)
  • Yoshi (CW07: Creature, medium (mechanic 1))
  • ThisisSakon (CW01: Creature, small (mechanic 1))
  • Mr the Nilbog (CW08: Creature, medium)
  • Cajun (CW10: Creature, medium)
  • Daij_Djan (CW04: Creature, small)

And there you go! Just make a card that abides by the guideline. Now, a few of you may notice your card says "mechanic 1" or "mechanic 2" - well, those are going to be our keywords! If you have the same mechanic as someone else, converse with them and decide on a keyword to go on both of your cards. It can be brand new, a returning keyword, a returning fan-made keyword, anything - it just needs to be on both cards!

That's it. Remember the world of Pyrulea, remember the keywords and effects that usually show up on white commons, and remember to send your cards with art and flavor text! Let the 30(ish) day set challenge officially BEGIN!

P.S. Please PM me your cards, so as to not clutter up the forums here. I'll keep the main post updated with an up-to-date set file once we have things actually... in the set file.

P.P.S. If anyone has any suggestions for an icon, send 'em my way as well!

Hey howdy all, from one of our illustrious designers we have received some big, fancy proper nouns: The Breach and the Nightspawn. These would be the hole in the outer shell of Pyrulea, and the creatures coming through it. Feel free to discuss this terminology/flavor amongst yourselves so that we can come to a quick agreement on it!

Wed, 2017-02-22 02:20
thehuw
thehuw's picture

Alright, let's get a little extravagant here. I didn't come up with these, but here's my interpretation: Pyrulea is a world whose sun died. The central star is a fabrication, the last gasp of the world's sworn protector, a mage named (REDACTED WE'LL WORK THIS OUT LATER). As his final act, watching the sun implode, he expended his phenomenal essence to invert the world of Pyrulea, damning the exterior to a slow, painful death but transplanting the outside surface to the inside one, and creating an artificial sun to warm it. (REDACTED) is alternately revered and despised as savior and blasphemer. The new sun is unusually strong and warm for its size, and this is what's caused the vegetation on Pyrulea to grow as much as it has.

The Breach is a vast rift in Pyrulea's surface, and the Nightspawn are the twisted, remnants of life on the outer side, doomed to oblivion by (REDACTED)'s last salvation and ultimately stained with tainted mana from the dead star. Creature type Horror seems appropriate - maybe, if we feel like pushing it, a little Horror tribal in the relevant colors (black and maybe red, imo).

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

This is a neat idea. An alternative idea is that the horrors were already there, and (REDACTED) used an immense amount of his power to trap them outside the sphere and keep all the good guys inside. Now, they've broken through, and they are NOT HAPPY.

Horror seems like an obvious creature type. Think they could show up pretty reasonably in blue as well. I think at this point the question is - do we want the horrors to be a product of turning the sphere inside out, or the reason for it?

Wed, 2017-02-22 02:29
thehuw
thehuw's picture

Ooh, that's a very good point. Perhaps they're the same creatures responsible for ruining Pyrulea's original sun and plunging it into constant darkness. This'd add a nice resonance to the "nightspawn" part, since there's no natural night inside a Dyson sphere. They're the bringers of night, and that's something Pyruleans fear on a deep, instinctive level - they brought night to the outside, and now they threaten to bring night to the inside too.

Mr The Nilbog

Continuing from huw's interpretation, I'd say the primary conflict should be of the "We ARE Struggling Together" variety. In the face of the Nightspawn, the spirits that rule Pyrulea would really love to save the world and all, but that would mean working with ''those'' chuckleheads. (i.e. eachother). Paralyzed by ancient grudges, a cold war brews between the spirits and their nations as the Nightspawn close in.
