Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

In recent months, we've seen WotC take elements of the planes of Zendikar and Innistrad and creating Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting out of them. Now, let's go the opposite direction for our next challenge: create a card based on Dungeons & Dragons — a spell, a place, a prominent character (say a god), an item/weapon, etc. Good luck!

If you are not familiar at all with D&D or don't have access to the official books, you may use another fantastical setting (novels/books, movies) and use it as inspiration for your card.

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

My own personal knowledge of Dungeons & Dragons is mostly limited to Baldur's Gate II (based on a D&D 2/3 mix) - so take my favorite level 1 wizard/warlock spell:

I have played more pathfinder than D&D, but I know that D&D has an iconic monster. THE BEHOLDER. So if we can make monsters from D&D, there are manny to choose from.

@Mahx Michael: As we don't have "unblockable" any more. (its "can't be blocked") You can't write what you would like your design to do.

1. Your design makes perfect sens. This is my possible formulation.

- Creatures your opponent's control that can't be blocked, can be blocked by any creatures this turn. (Ignore all can't be blocked effects on those creatures. They can be blocked as normal.)

2. The other part with the wall thing, should be good.

- Creatures your opponent's control that can't be blocked except by Walls, can be blocked by any creatures this turn. (Ignore all can't be blocked except by Walls effects on those creatures. They can be blocked as normal.)

I'm actually currently running my first D&D campaign as a Game Master.
My card is the first Boss encounter of the D&D 5 Starter Set "Lost Mine of Phandelver".
Since my party managed to evade that encounter with a ludicrous lie (and a natural 20),
I'm putting him here.

His encounter states, that he has two goblin flunkies and wolf named Ripper who's death causes him to flee.
He's also crazy, so i thought about giving him trample and 'attack every round', but that cluttered the card to much for my taste.

I've only ever played the more modern Dungeons & Dragons board game (specifically Castle Ravenloft). This card was inspired by the way heroes explore the dungeon - whenever a new tile is placed, there is almost always a monster or treasure to accompany it.

@Mort: compare this card to yours.

The only thing I can think of is Pun-Pun, and Pun-Pun's no fun, so I'm gonna sit this one out.

@Zio: your card's 1st ability creates an infinite loop. Suggest changing to "on another permanent you control". But that still creates the same problem if you have two out. Turn it into a "you may" ability, that'll solve the infinite loop problem:

Whenever one or more quest counters are placed onto another permanent you control, you may put a quest counter on Quest to Slay the Titan.

I considered plumbing the vaults of old D&D for something really weird, like the monks who communicate exclusively in rebus puzzles, the evil telepathic yak people, or dolphins being inexplicably lawful good. (All real, by the way.) In the end, though, I went for this classic piece of wizardly engineering. Official D&D calls this the Apparatus of Kwalish, but I went for the more generic Pathfinder version of the name. Well, as generic as a tiny crab mecha can realistically be.

I like the premise here, but that's also a 2 mana 4/4 with two keywords that make it hard to chump. It's easy enough to create any number of tokens or just play a White mana symbol 2/1 that sends a 4/4 on turn 3. I'd probably bump it to Crew 3, as it also makes the first ability relevant-- can't tap the 3/1 for 1 mana symbolRed mana symbol, and as of now, that's a pretty pointless inhibitor.

@Gurfle: Crew 2 is important to the spirit of the card, as the Apparatus only seats two people - so, if I were to do some balance tuning on this, it'd probably take the form of raising the mana cost or something instead. Thanks for the input!

@thehuw ah, fair 'nough. The cost to 3 mana symbol wouldn't be half bad either, or you could have it with only power 1 or less, but I suppose that may also defeat the point. Well, in the end it's your call, so no problem for my input, but I may get a second opinion-- I haven't meddled with Standard recently so maybe this is balance over there, next to Smuggler's Copter and the free 10/10's (yes I know those are specific deck archetypes).

as someone who plays ( were running storm kings thunder, so fun.) Dm's (Curse of strahd. its to fun attacking freinds with strahdzies), and who is trying to design my own D&D adventure, this is officially my favorite challenge in ages. and i thought up this instantly!
Really like curse of Strahd, probably too much.)

@Touhoufanatic: That card is suuuper-broken. Taps for multiple mana plus upside, and absolutely zero downside. I get that it's a top down design, but as is just isn't balanced at all, let alone well balanced. Maybe making a plane card for Ravenloft would work better considering that the castle is it's own demiplane.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but it difficult to give constructive criticism when I'm not allowed to give suggestion on how one might do better. Plus, I used to make similar mistakes and want help others learn from my experience.

Alright, I'm just going for it and putting my card up. If it's later decided that it doesn't fit the challenge, so be it. I'm gessing it's alright to base my card on a video game though.

I chose to base my card on The Witcher 3, a game I very much enjoyed. When I started playing, I quickly learned that the character Cirilla, also known as Ciri, was basically just a planeswalker, straight up. So here is my interpretation of how she would look as a Magic card.

Now it's way too narrow: it doesn't help you cast spells (which all lands should do, almost always by producing mana), and even in a Vampire tribal deck, unless it's also legend tribal, how many legendary Vampires are you actually going to be running. It might be easier to just make the legendary Vampire instead of the land that supports him.

I think a better wording maybe, "Creature your opponents that control can be blocked as though they had no abilities and weren't affected by spells or abilities." Not sure about the "affected" part or if that works, be the "no abilities" part does.

I personally think this is one of those effects everyone understands yet are nearly impossible to put into rules text.

I'd probably try: "Until end of turn, creatures you control are not affected by effects preventing them from blocking creatures target opponent controls."

This however also shuts down stuff like Flying, Menace..

@Mahx Michael: Just like Reality Glitch and Daij_Djan says, everyone understands yet it are nearly impossible to word out rule wise.

I'm not a rule guru, so I can't say what suggestions that are best.

I see what you mean by "count for each creature you can't block". thats way I put in a parenthesis text, to ensure an understandable text.

(Ignore all can't be blocked effects on those creatures. They can be blocked as normal.)

blocked as normal (if a creature still has flying, only creatures with reach and flying can block it.)

Reality Glitch suggestion are also good.

If you really like your design, you word it like you wise. That is the right thing to do, in the particular case. Winking smiley

"Creatures your opponents control lose "This creature cannot be blocked" abilities until end of turn."

I also think this card should cost less, as I would never pay 4 mana symbol mana for this effect. Maybe 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbol at most; it's just so situational that you almost never want to play it.

That said, I quite like the card and would like to see it stay.

@Yoshi: I think you need "a second target" and "a third target." Also, memory issues aside, there's no reason this shouldn't just tap the first creature down for two of its controller's untap steps.

@Aargh: +1 goes before 0. And having removal as a plus on a three mana walker is pretty good. (which is why Chandra, Roaring Flame has player damage as the plus and creature damage as the minus.)

@Liz: You want Mystic Confluence wording

@jacqui: according to (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&text=+["tap%20up%20to%20two%20target%20creatures"]), Dungeons should cost at least 1 more. The cost to tap up to two target creatures is, at its most basic, cmc2. However, if you add in a cantrip or the stays tapped for next upkeep clause, that pushes the cost up to cmc3. At lower rarities, having the card be one half of a split card will oftentimes also increase the cmc by 1.

@Asthanius: oh you bastard. Did you read my entry before coming up with yours, or did you already know about Pun-Pun?

Yes, but those are all instants and Dungeons is a sorcery. The ability is significantly worse at sorcery speed.

Compliments on the render, really. I wants to know how that popping out effect is done so bad.

The 0 effect is perfect for Ciri lore wise, and it fits into White's share of her colors. It should be ordered after the +1 effect, see Gideon, Ally of Zendikar.

The +1 effect does more than Chandra, the Firebrand, which isn't necessarily bad as that card is meh, but maybe too much for a 3 CMC planeswalker.

The Ult is underwhelming to wait 3 turns for, and to boot it feels way out of tune for a Boros planeswalker being a Blue effect primarily.

@Wapulatus: If I want a "pop-out" effect, I generally use Photoshop/GIMP/MS Paint/whatever and apply a second transparent layer that only has the "popout" image. If you want it to appear MSE, you'll need the "Extra" template and use their "image2" options. You'll need to now the exact pixel measurements for it to work, but it's doable.

@jacqui-pup & Wapulatus: I may have to rethink the +1 and -5 abilities. I wanted to tie her abilities in with what she does in the video game, but it would probably be an overall better design if I sacrificed some flavor in favor of making the abilities fit better.
Wapulatus, I used a free, browser-based software called SumoPaint to make the popping effect. I usually always put a slightly higher quality version of the art on my cards as well, since MSE tends to create some jpeg artifacting on the renders.

EDIT: Alright, made a new version. I made the +1 and ultimate kind of work together. I kept the +1 as an ability that can ping creatures, since the 2 starting loyalty makes her a little fragile. I think that's fair enough. The card doesn't feel terribly red though, besides the first ability, but I might come up with something better at a later point in time. Anyway, here's how the new one looks.

Went with the concept of a regular ol' sword, that after a bit o' enchanting, gets a super upgrade.

Things I'm considering:
-Bumping equip cost on "Steel Longsword" to 2 mana symbol
-Making it a lower bonus on "Enchanted Blade"
-Making "Coin"s do something else, besides, y'know, exist.

@Gurfle: What if Coins were like Gold tokens, but not quite as powerful? I could see them having "Sacrifice this artifact: Add Colorless mana symbol to your mana pool."

I dislike certain phrasing conventions, thus what I did with gold. Regardless along side a sac or bounce engine this should have some interesting uses, it is somewhat a downside but can actually be used as mana fixing or at times restore some spent mana. Further lair centric cards should be possible, either when generated, sacced, bounced in existence etc

Anywho, the the flavour is the creature inhabits land and stores its gold there.

Are we allowed to create a card for a character we RP'd in D & D or does that sidestep the challenge too much?

I have only played 3/4 very short campaigns/scenarios and know very little about the wider D & D world but I am trying to get into it more recently and have 5e books to dig into a little.

If personal characters are allowed:
