A multi-card design challenge

I'll cut the preamble. Here's the deal.

  • You will be given a briefing. This takes the form of a character concept - depending on the challenge setter, it might be broad and sweeping (just a few words) or very detailed and specific.
  • From this character concept, you must design four cards: two rares, an uncommon and a common. You may upgrade one rare slot to mythic if you wish.
  • One of your rares must be a legendary creature or planeswalker representing the character themselves.
  • Your other three cards will represent the character's portfolio - the summoned creatures and magical effects that exemplify their particular skillset, gear, followers, and so on. A powerful wizard might have a few favorite spells, a warlord would have their troops, and a daring rogue could have some tricks and techniques they use - the exact nature of the portfolio depends very much on the character you've built.
  • To make things a bit more interesting, you cannot provide an additional flavor blurb. You'll have to convey your idea of the character through names, mechanical execution and flavor text alone!
  • Judging happens after roughly a week, as per usual, and the winner designs the next briefing.

Get it? Got it? Good. Your first briefing is as follows: a character who'd be at home on the open ocean.

Judging is here!

Daij_Djan and Aila: Discover is a clean, versatile mechanic, though, since it's inherent card advantage, I can see it being somewhat hard to balance. Nonetheless, the way it's used here appears mechanically sound. The choice of an explorer type is a little bit obvious, but that's not necessarily a problem. I do wonder if Trusty Compass is a little strong (repeatable scry plus a two-mana rock is quite a bit, even at uncommon), and Aila seems somewhat hard to get going without a fair bit of external support (in my opinion she could afford to be a 2/2 or have evasion of some kind), but overall this is a very solid set of cards.

Flo00 and Kandrur: Heavy on the mechanical synergies here, and Kandrur is an appropriately potent mythic. I don't think I like Stare of the Kraken, as Turn the Tide exists and this would need to return quite a large creature (and thus a sizeable mana investment in the mono-blue strategy this is geared towards) to be any better than that. In Kandrur's Wake also feels like a color pie bend for blue, which doesn't usually give big +N/+0s, and has the "intimidate problem" of being very swingy based on what your opponent's playing - it'll sometimes be very strong on its own and other times need a lot of support. Strike of the Kraken is a creative way to do a counterspell, though.

Cajun and Captain Yev: This is a very creative spin on Blue mana symbolRed mana symbol, mechanically speaking. My biggest problem with the entry overall lies in Missing Fortune's attack trigger. If you're discarding or milling a lot of land cards, which is what these cards seem to want to do, you're going to be stuck returning land rather than any actual "business" cards, and you won't get it back into your hand to discard it for effect again. I suppose there's synergy with nonbasic land, though, and the rest of the entry is solid, except that I really wouldn't put Sunken Secrets at common and Captain Yev's +1 Loyalty is a bit weak. The thematic cohesion here is spot-on, and Yev's ultimate is superb in that it's extremely powerful without being an "I win" button.

Wapulatus and Ortzi: It seems odd that Traverse the Skies can't get Ortzi, but that's just a minor thing. It does, however, tie into a concern I have about Ortzi the card: the first ability feels like busywork. Vigilance is only relevant on your turn anyway, and it's very odd that they have two different forms of evasion depending on whose turn it is, especially given that islandwalk will oftentimes be a lot less relevant than flying would be. Honestly I'd just drop the tide here and give them flying, vigilance and lifelink straight up - as well as a cost increased, as they're a little stronger than I'd like. Traverse is an interesting tutor (I have a soft spot for tutors with odd restrictions), and Saltwater Communion is functional even though the two options are rather strange bedfellows. I'm wary of The Skysea, because it's almost strictly better than a basic land - I rarely consider legendariness enough of a drawback on its own, and especially not here where the card passively grants creatures evasion.

fluffyDeathbringer and Leniel: A superb execution of the classic "cursed sailor" myth, with a great suite of cards to match. Solitude is a great pseudo, and plays up the black "loners" theme that I don't think we see enough of. If I have one critique here, it's that Leniel the card doesn't feel terribly legendary - they could just be an efficient black beater, and don't have much to set them out as a unique character. The flavor text does a lot of great work here, though, and exemplifies what I was hoping for from this challenge: flavor conveyed through the cards instead of external commentary.

Mort and Karel: "Free traders" are one of the great underused nautical archetypes. Seriously. We hear a lot about pirates and explorers, but pragmatic profiteers don't get enough of the limelight, in my opinion. Karel here reminds me a lot, perhaps a little too much, of Zedruu the Greathearted, but they convey the trade flavor very well and the other cards complement that theme - I especially like Exotic Cargo as a nod to Vedalken Shackles. Treacherous Voyage could bear to be slightly cheaper, though, in my opinion, since it gives you card selection and not actual advantage.

jacqui-pup and The Loqnannui: -20 points for making me retype that six times before I got the spelling right. Stick out your tongue The Loqnannui itself is really strong, maybe more so than I'm comfortable with, but for eight mana I can't really complain. The planeswalker deck-esque rare might be too good even without the planeswalker-deck-esque search clause, as it's essentially blue Plague Wind a lot of the time, and They Come From The Ocean is weirdly efficient for a blue creature-producer - but this entry is redeemed by the "eight" theming. It's no secret that I love numerical themes in Magic, and this is a textbook example.

Not a single bad entry in sight - I'd call that a promising start for this new contest! If I seem overly critical, it's because in a lot of cases I was reaching quite far to find faults. It was really hard to call this one, but I'm giving the win to fluffyDeathbringer and the runner-up spots to Cajun and Daij_Djan, in that order. I am, however, giving everyone an honorable mention.

I look forward to seeing, and hopefully entering, the next challenge!

@thehuw: Glad you like Discover, as it'll be featured in my Luvion set. As the mechanic itself basically is a cantrip, balancing it won't be much of an issue (there won't be any repetative effects at common after all Winking smiley ). You're probably right about Trusty Compass, I'll ponder about either increasing the Scry cost or change the card itself to a Manalith-variant. And yeah, Aila most likely should start as 2/2.

I almost completely forget about phyrexian arena all the time. The brokenness of that enchantment just didn't click with me. And looking over Magnum opus, it probably only reduces colorless costs because... well, it just doesn't show any colored mana in the reduced cost, just X. And Jaryn is admittedly weak, but the bard isn't telling his story, but how great things were before he came along. Well not great, but good. Overall, all of my designs were admittedly rushed and I'm pretty confident that your judging was more than fair.

Running a bit behind: This week's character does their best work out of sight, either flavorfully or mechanically.

@fluffy: The golem was supposed to be somewhere between the Golem of Prague and a zombie, with the 'given new life' bit of Untold being the link that wasn't strong enough. As for dissenters, I was aiming at 'everyone loves the king, or winds up dead/sacrificed/golemized.' I may have tried to go too far off four cards.

Wrote this up yesterday but the top two were almost too close to call. Podium at the bottom.

Mort:
Cards: Gizen’s soulbond is a bit weird, because it’s going to be difficult to unpair him once he’s paired, but that does have a cool flavor ring to it. Harsh Ideal is not really white, letting you blow up any one creature with minimum collateral damage is black’s domain. This would be more white if it was ‘Then destroy all creatures without +1/+1 counters on them’. Companionship is fine, but aggressively narrow, even AVR limited didn’t really want that. Blinded Veteran is a fine take on the 1mana 3/1, though one that isn’t going far.
Theme: While I’ll give you credit for the unique take on ‘out of sight’ and man-and-his-dog works well for three cards, Harsh Ideal doesn’t seem to fit here either, which is a strike against you again.
Overall 2.5/5

Yoshi:
Cards: Neathu’s forecast isn’t blue, and is fairly cheap for endless Assassinates. Regenerate is also depreciated, so that lines not needed. Puzzling Disappearance tho is a great trick and works lovely with forecasting. Gruesome Blackmail isn’t exactly ‘blackmail’, but an excellent counterspell. Mounting Paranoia on the other hand goes a bit all over the place. While I can see what it’s doing flavorfully, it’s quite ugly mechanically.
Theme: Neathu works much stronger on the theme side, nailing the uncatchable assassin, although I’m not sure what he’s doing in a meadow. Only concern is that the design didn’t mesh well into the mechanics.

Nazsmith:
Cards: Urguiel is an interesting take on the Necrotic Ooze shapeshifter. Discovery’s second investigation is a bit odd, and while I think the point is to interact with Urguiel’s names, you’d have to kill one to investigate the second one dying. It works but isn’t the most elegant upside. Underhand Dealings follows its footsteps as a card that is too expensive when it flops and perhaps too cheap when it succeeds. It’s hard to feel how useful this is without playing with it. Foresight is a neat take on the Blue mana symbol cantrip that I could see getting some mileage.
Theme: The theme here feels a bit diluted by the investigate cards, which seems to be used by and against Urguiel. and where Foresight is giving character development, Discovery seems mostly disconnected except for the ‘same name’ quirk that didn’t go over well.

Zephyr:
Cards: Inaction Snare should probably return on the upkeep, because as it stands it isn’t good at flickering your own things, and returning tapped isn’t helpful if cast on your turn. Idea is good, execution falters. The Shade works well though, the revolt-y flying works quite nicely with the archetype here. Featherless Nightwatch is weird to gauge, but I think the Exile cost could be dropped some or have some upside added to it as 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol, Tap symbol, Exile ~ is a hefty price for eating one creature. Lyriel’s a neat flicker/aristocrat general, though she is very small for an angel.
Theme: While the Talandris Nightwatch works disappearing into the night well, them being wingless angels without explanation why is a bit of a whiff.

thehuw:
Cards: Lands in grave is an interesting resource, but it is a fairly rare one and Chillwood and Guidance aren't quite pulling their weight for that. Mulchbug and Altesar pull it off better and this strategy could certainly take off with further additions or tweaks.
Theme: While muted, the forest steward is a great take on out-of-sight and backs it up with the unusual resource. This worked quite well but the cards slipped you up just a bit.
Overall 4/5

Herzi:
Cards: I don’t know if Forethought has a home, but it’s a cool Peek variant. Circumstances goes the other direction, as it outclasses Immolating Glare, Assassinate, and Death Stroke. That may be fine, but it’s beyond where wizards is willing to go atm. Compelling Whispers is my favorite of the bunch and is a great mechanical-flavor tie in. The Stranger is a little worrying in how much it takes to remove him and a typical deck will have at least 1/3rd lands means he can landlock people without much trouble. On spell trigger interrupts it, but its about as troubling as repeatable fateseal.
Theme: Absolute homerun on the theme here, from flavor and naming to progression and mechanics. Seriously well done.
Overall 4.5/5

fluffyDeathbringer:
Cards: Visit and Initiate are all around great little cards. Moonshadow Creed feels a little backwards (may be the point), but works fine, and Hodric ties everything together by being a great use of hybrid with Balance and the unique removal.
Theme: There were a few takes at using night but this one does it the best. Each piece works alone and brings up the others. Really the closest thing to a strike is Creed sacrificing for the buffs doesn't quite line up with the first two, but it fits Hodrick's abilities very nicely so it's minor.
Overall 4.5/5

It's really close at the top, but the cards give fluffyDeathbringer the winning edge, with HerziQuerzi being a step behind if fluffy doesn't want to go right back to judging.

@Fluffy: Nephthys very much needs 'your opponents control' added, good point. I thought Daij had dropped the 'can only attack fortresses' so trigger needs to aim at nonattacking or otherwise change. Atuum did have an Angel, however.

Judging from last to first:

Flo00: Both cards and theme are rather scattered here. Superior Warcraft is especially worrying, as a double Master Warcraft with cascade, and Tempomancer just seems to be there to counter it's drawback and not supporting Chestan. Battlemage is cool but the rest doesn't quite work together.

Mr the Nilbog: Eh, what is Castigation of Upstarts doing? Most attackers are tapped and most blockers will be untapping next turn. Brand is a fine ability but could drop legendary and some of it's mana cost. These two don't quite connect but the other two work well together. Kurana's got promise but her portfolio, particularly Upstarts, doesn't quite hold up.

Mort: Great use of level here, and one that gets quickly out of control in multiplayer (not a bad thing). It's strange that you're converting things into both zombies and skeletons, but the real knock you took was using Zombify as your common. Political Suicide is a great edict, that gets overshadowed by the brutality of Cruel Passage of Time.

thehuw: I was hoping someone would pull off monogreen here. Zaan is an awesome Ooze lord, and the use of investigate is great. Host is probably a little too strong but overall really solid entry.

Daij: While a little fiddly to keep track of colors, Miria draws the awe. Tint could get away with being Instant or cantripping, but otherwise all four do great from a balance and thematic angle. As usual with these I don't have a lot to say because they speak for themselves, gg.
