Timespiraled's 6th Custom Cube


There comes a time in every planeswalker’s life when he or she acquires some fragment of unimaginable power. Perhaps it comes in the form of some awe inspiring spell, or some ancient and forgotten relic from another world. The time has come for you to obtain this power.

With 360 cards, Vault Masters 2017 carries on its predecessor's legacy. It remains a unique cube drafting format for 8 players, where you will acquire and use cards whose powers can only be described as epic. Inspired by vintage level cards of the past, Vault Masters 2017 continues to offer up a creative new take on the power-cube experience.

Whether you will decimate your foes through ferocious creatures, or score a three-round victory using impossible combos, the Multiverse is your plaything when you draft Vault Masters 2017.

What's New?

Vault Masters 2017 carries on its predecessor's legacy by being chock full of high value and high power cards. The Cube has been modified from its original 180 and 375 versions to its current 360 card size. As the years go by, you can continue to expect changes bi-yearly. Vault Masters 2017 will therefore likely have a size increase (to either 405 or 450 cards) sometimes during Summer 2017.

Since Kaladesh is all the rage, we've Kaladesh-ed the artifacts as best we can. Cards were balanced, changed, pruned, removed and added so though you may see a lot of cards still there, quite a few have changed. Expect a few last changes on the Cubetutor site as we finalize the last couple changes over the coming days! We've cleared the draft data so we hope to see some fresh drafts!

While I am hype, I'm a little sad that Exotic Smuggler doesn't do the booster tutor effect anymore, especially with the increased cube size. It was my favorite card in the original cube!

I'll also note that the Kaladeshification of the set is getting a resounding "meh" from me. It seems to amount to sticking the orange metal border on all your artifacts, which isn't mechanical and frankly looks tacky. Adding some vehicles would be cool, probably... but why the looting spell with energy when there are literally two cards that make energy counters in the entire set?

Visually we're just testing out the Kaladesh frame online. They still have normal borders in the printed out version. I can see it changing back to non-Masterpiece border if other people chime in that they don't like the look.

Exotic Smuggler ended up being too strong and a lot of players would mess up his ability and keep cards from that booster in their deck afterwards. One of the lessons learned was that if people continually get something wrong, the novelty of the idea may not be enough to save it.

Vehicles are hard to balance, especially at a vintage level I feel so none were added yet. Both energy cards work by themselves and it ends up being a clean way to make a modal rummaging spell with a flat mana cost. In the future we do plan on adding some more energy in. We try to include bits and pieces from each block, hence the colorless designs of BFZ/OGW still semi-present.

All in all, a lot of the changes have made this cube run a lot smoother than before.

EDIT: Changed the art to Non-Masterpiece frames for now. I have both types of images saved so I can re-add them later if need be.

This cube is awesome.

Note regarding Morngrim the Stormforger: The mana he gives you on attack will drain before you can cast a sorcery spell (barring Quicken-like effects). You might consider adding a clause to let the mana persist through phases, like on Sakiko, Mother of Summer, or removing the bit about sorceries.

So um, some other notes

- You have a CRAPTON of 2/1s for Black mana symbol or 1 mana symbolBlack mana symbol. Like, so so many. Wicked Fleshgrafter could probably be a 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbol 1/3 or something.
- Meltstrider is missing an s in the rule text
- Absolving Flames should be "Exile all cards from all graveyards"
- Mistress of Flowers doesn't work as is; awaken can't go on noncreatures without alterations to its rules text. You might have to specify it's an ETB effect, since that's the aim I think

Are you taking sugestions? I have some.

As for Awaken, the wording's a bit ambiguous so I'll add a "as you cast" clause.

I removed them all. Got tired of having my stuff stolen left and right. I keep the physical copy up to date but haven't updated CubeTutor.
