Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest!

Here we go, competitors: our hundred and forty-eighth challenge!

The winner of the "Plus Size" poll was Pixi-Rex with...

And the challenge issued by our winner was...

Pixi-Rex wrote:
We are hitting Christmas this week, so I thought lets us all get in a good Christmas mood.
Thank for those who voted on my design. It was a good Christmas gift.
My gift to all of you are, make a design, where you can choose between all the points available down under.
  • Design a Happy Holidays card.
  • Design a card that is based on a Christmas ideology – like: charity, unity or modesty (Explain the ideology of your design).
  • Design a card that you always wished existed.
Merry Christmas to all. And for those who do not celebrate Christmas, have a happy Holiday.

Note: As I won't be at home during the holidays, (like it was the case last year as well) this challenge will last for two weeks till January 2nd. ~Daij_Djan

To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render.
Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the bottom/right of your original post.

And now, time to begin the challenge!

Best of luck, competitors!

Coming in early with my entry, I was surprised that I got an idea so quickly that I liked. My main issue was choosing colors, but I feel like this was the best choice and looks the nicest. As for which theme the entry is in...lets say it's a little bit of all three.

Design Philosophy
So seeing this contest, I wasn't exactly sure what I'd want to do with it. I don't make too many cards that aren't very serious, so I was drawing a blank on where to even begin. It makes sense to have a Christmas based contest and it is nice to have such versatility in the requirements for the entries. Either way, like I said, I got an idea for a card oddly quick but I'll still try to get some words down on my rationale behind it.

Taking a look at the card for the first time, you can probably take a good guess what is referenced in it. The original idea I wanted to emulate was, of course, The Grinch himself from the Dr. Seuss story. Infamous for being grumpy and hating the Christmas spirit, he wanted to ruin Christmas by stealing everyone's presents and decorations. With that in mind, I was starting to get a concept for a card already.

Now the two things I needed to find a way to emulate is "stealing" and "gifts". Stealing is commonly represented in Magic as combat damage effects, such as Stealer of Secrets or Jhessian Thief. Their names alone show what this effect means in flavor. Combat damage to a player or just being straight up unblockable usually symbolizes these thieves and Rogues, card draw commonly associated with gaining knowledge from it. Prowl as well got popularized by Rogues due to this idea, in cards such as Knowledge Exploitation or Notorious Throng.

With the theft part of the card decided as an effect, time to get an idea of what to represent "Gifts" by. Thinking about what a gift itself is, it's usually something unknown but enjoyable wrapped up in a box. So what I'm focusing on is that "enjoyable" and "unknown" part. So the main thing thats easy to find out is the latter, as face down cards are the simply unknown. Enjoyable comes hand in hand with this mechanic too. As morph will be something you already know, I decided manifest made more sense. You still technically know what it will be, but there's a more random chance behind it. For a final touch to make it flavorful, I might as well make it turn face down cards into Gifts as well.

Now decided on the effect, I need to turn it into a Grinch with the combination. I could just have him say "Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, manifest the top card of your library." But that isn't exactly stealing gifts but rather making your own...so it made sense to be a bit weirder and manifest that player's card instead. Most of the time you probably won't be able to get anything of use, but due to his effect you'd always get a 3/3 creature out of it and the opponent loses a card.

Went on surprisingly long with this spoiler for once, but I guess even my quick thoughts have a lot of basis behind them. Now he might be a bit powerful due to his lower cost and getting a 3/3 just about every unblocked attack...but for triple colors and requiring that combat damage, I felt as if it should have been fine.

Edit - Oh, also forgot to mention why this entry appeals to each condition. It's based off a Christmas concept, uses a bit of an unusual concept (Gift creatures) for Happy Holidays style, and...I've actually wanted a Temur Morph Commander ever since Khans of Tarkir, so I honestly do enjoy this card.

Also the render's art has a bit of blood in it, not much but I thought I'd just mention it just in case. I mean, official cards in the past have had blood in it anyways.

@digiman: I think, in practice, this might actually be more time-consuming than Top despite the increased activation cost. (I've always been fine with the power level of Top; it's the fact that it takes ages to resolve and gets activated every five seconds that makes me rip my hair out.) I wonder if it might benefit from a per-turn activation limit or some other limitation on how many times it can go off, though maybe costing 2 mana symbol is enough of an offset on its own, I'm not sure.

That said, this is a nice spin (heh) on the existing card. You might want to change the color of the Happy Hanukkah text on the render, though, as it's a bit hard to read at the moment.

As a general rule, I don't much like Christmas, and I'm especially put off by most of the music surrounding it. Whether it's Mariah Carey declaring that all she wants for Christmas is me, Bing Crosby promising that he'll be home for Christmas, or Roy Wood expressing his wish for it to be Christmas every day (a wish I'll never see the same way again after watching the Black Mirror Christmas special), it seems you can't escape the damn stuff - and it's the same, year on year, sometimes as early as October, every time you go out for groceries or pens or cold medication. Fairytale of New York is alright, but it's not exactly a cheery number and doesn't encourage people to buy stuff, so it's out of the question most of the time. (I also rather like Don't Let the Bells End by The Darkness, but, like everything else by The Darkness, it tends to get written off as a joke.)

Christmas carols, though, I'm rather fond of. Way back in the mists of time before my voice dropped, I was the star alto in my school's choir, and Christmas services were some of my favorites. I'm not especially religious, but I loved singing (I still do, though I'm no longer very good at it), and the songs we sang for November and December services tended towards the cheerful and optimistic rather than the dolorous and dirgelike, which I appreciated. I wish we got to hear more of those instead - the tunes are better, the lyrics nicer, and you get the majesty of the human voice rather than the same sleigh bell sound effect that seems to open every Christmas single oh sweet Jesus why won't it STOP

Anyway, this is all a longwinded way of saying that my entry for the week is based on a Christmas carol. (If you don't recognize it, Google the flavor text.) As well as being a good candidate for a more serious "Happy Holidays" card, I think this represents the very Christmassy virtue of charity, and it expresses a wish I've long held for Sigil Captain to be playable, so I suppose I've hit all three challenges to some extent.

Nice to see a non-Un card as our first entry. I can positively say in constructed you can break this in so many ways it's not even funny. Imagine a turn 3 Argentum Armor attached to a Blighted Agent. Flavor is pretty sweet for the holidays, but I think some balancing is necessary. Seems a bit aggressive for casual play.

Sylphiod

Hard to say the power level on this, but being able to cast the three worst nonland cards in your deck for five mana seems alright. In constructed this works fine if built around, and in draft I'd pass this for a while. Personally I think the design is fun, but in colors that usually don't play friendly, group huggy effects like this. My one major gripe with this card is that there is no attachment from flavor to mechanics (or even colors), and I feel that's a large flaw that needs to be addressed. This could have some casual fun.

TheBrokenUrn

Being at sorcery speed means the first ability is almost completely redundant. Don't understand why this is at mythic, and the group hug effect doesn't have an out for you to take advantage of other than playing a weenie/token strategy. Casually this would be eh.

----------------------------------------

Mahx Michael

The flavor doesn't carry the mechanics. As in, yes, I get the Crew 6 thing, but the amount of investment you're putting into a nearly worthless effect isn't fun to play with or competitive to use. Casually I wouldn't play this for the same reason I wouldn't play Helvault: It's flavorful and neat to look at, but it's so hard to get going that it doesn't do much.

----------------------------------------

jacqui-pup

Rudolph with your nose so bright, won't you ride my sleigh tonight?

It's a cute card with fun flavor. I'd run this over fog in a cube for funsies.

Ziolang

Apologies for not getting the flavor, but outside of a weird color choicing this card is brilliant. It's like an even more fun Booster Tutor, and it fits so well into casual and cube.

KalvinHobbez

Morph commander is neat, however the first ability is purely political. I'd say you might want to tweak it in spite of the flavor reasons, as the card can't stand on it's own without morphs.

Vunik

Pretty interesting card that promotes alternate win conditions based off of life gain (Aetherflux Reservoir comes to mine), but I wouldn't say it's that fun to play casually. All this really does is either:

A) Grinds the game to a hault as you either win or dig towards a win condition.

B) Opponent casts [insert enchantment removal card].

I don't think cards with effects like that are worth playing for casual. There is a reason why people hate cards like Blood Moon. Certain decks are forced to scoop or sideboard against it. In draft, this would force everyone to draft enchantment removal, and vice versa. I don't like the design personally, but it stands on it's own.

Look, I'll first say that I love effects like this. It's why I put it on my card as well. But this doesn't do anything but do that effect. It doesn't progress the board state, it doesn't help you do something in that game, it just makes a funny situation. Look at other Happy Holidays cards. Thopter Pie network still functions as a playable card. So does Mishra's Toy Workshop. There's no use for designing a magic card that doesn't do anything in the game.

Aarhg

Can't say I didn't chuckle at this one. Design is good and it's fairly costed. Not much else to say other than I'd casually play this in a Kaladesh Cube.

Not much to say here other than what I put in my first post. You fixed most of the original issues with the card. Nice work!

Having a Mentor of the Meek like effect as my commander seems fun, and giving me and excuse to run every Savannah Lions in the game is interesting. Not very powerful, but I think it works as it is. I like it, but maybe an effect that would be more beneficial (like replacing life gain with card draw) would be better.

bazzboda

Not judging this yet, as it technically doesn't count for the contest without any holiday flavor added.

Goblin Tutor 2: Electric Boogaloo. Jokes aside, I like the design. I feel like it's missing more of a holidays feel, but it accomplishes that task. Makes for some casual fun.

----------------------------------------

Inverness

Awwwwwwww. I loved Garruk, but the tree is fun. My only critique is that 13 is still flavorfully a "bad" number, so 12 would be a bit better (Twelve days of christmas?). But when that's my only gripe, you know that's a nice design.

----------------------------------------

Yoshi

Puns for days. I loved this design, as it both promotes casual group hug, as well as a transformed effect that can be deadly if utilized. Currently the best out of what I've seen.

----------------------------------------

DoomSp0rk

Flavor is there, and forcing opponents out of combat tricks is neat. This seems a bit better than Basandra, Battle Seraph in some ways, and seeing that on a Caribou is funny.

@Wapulatus I was going for more of a group-hug style card. Maybe limiting what sources it prevents would make that better?

@Wapulatus: Fair. As odd as it sounds, I hadn't even thought about making the card actually do anything in the game itself. I rectified that, though. Who here likes Lava Axe?

Starting with you, each player gives each other player a thoughtful gift. (Thoughtful gifts are gifts the receiver enjoys or needs. For example, a sealed Magic booster is a great thoughtful gift.)
Loving Acts deals 5 damage to each player who doesn’t give a thoughtful gift to each other player. Each player dealt damage this way returns each gift he or she received.

@Wapalatus: White Elephant is a gift exchange where each person gets a joke or inexpensive gift and puts it with all the other presents. Then each person can either open a gift or steal from someone else.

I couldn't help but make another Hanukkah remix of an old card. I made two renders, one using an old frame and in old wording (as if it was printed when the original one was), and one using the Kaladesh masterpiece frame (with current wording as though it was reprinted on Kaladesh)

This isn't my entry, I just wanted to share.

@ Tohou Is this meant to be worded that in multiplayer games everyone gets something not just those who attacked/got hit?
