Restrictions breed creativity, but so do freedoms. Live and learn, and strive to find a balance.

With the challenge being what it is, however, rules are meant to be followed. One discontinuity casts the whole pattern into doubt. Deviation would be selfish and likely detrimental.

And yet, no two designers have submitted the same Magus. So maybe there is room for a ray of individuality to shine through.

(Finally realized what Magus actually do-- whoops)

Decided to stray from the path a little, went with Kaladeshian flavor and such.

Loosely based on Inventors' Fair, or just the whole of the Kaladeshian fair, I see no point in reprinting a creature with an ability, so if it's similar I'd count it a victory. Gotta love that stuff.

Lemme know if it's broken or just awful, etc. etc.

@Inverness: the Green mana symbol goes a bit deeper than just a justification of the high p/t (but I'm glad you caught that), Green mana symbol is an enemy color of Blue mana symbol, which is the primary carddraw color (nevermind for now that Green mana symbol is 2ndary for carddraw). Combined with Black mana symbol, Golgari seems like the combination that would most want this card; as a reanimation target, and as a way to keep their 'yard stocked with their stuff, while disrupting the opponent. Also, the cmc of 8 made me think that nothing less than 8/8 would be worth it (but I decided to go all-in on 2 swings), which makes it a perfect "protect the king" card--a card which you'd do everything in your power to keep around, up to & including sacking all your other perms & discarding your entire hand.

As a final note, I remember playing with a guy who ran a deck that combined the Portal with Future Sight. As soon as Magus of the Future was spoiled, he HAD to have it in his deck! To this day, it's still one of the most evil 2-card combos I've ever seen.

@Pixi: Yours is the card that this card always wanted to be.

@Mahx: Stick with Magus of the Lotus. It follows the naming convention better, and slyly references the lotus position.

@guhkun: slight nitpick-the does in fltxt should be de-italicized. Other than that, your original toughness might've been correct.

@Flo: why does this cost 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol and not just 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbol? You have to wait a whole turn to activate it anyway, and the activation cost causes the total mana spent to perfectly mirror the manacost of the original spell.

@Mocan, @Inverness: you can still cut down on shuffles--Search your library for a green creature card with converted mana cost X or less, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle ~ into its owner's library.

@Zoako: Is that you Marble Titan? Is this me?

@Mario: So, is this Quatto's ultimate fate, to be zombified & stoned? Also, why no clash, if the card you're referencing has it?

@huw: Whoa. Wow. DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!! Would you be interested in co-writing some things with me?

I decided I would try to tackle the idea of "What if there was a Magus that referenced every Magus that existed or will exist in Magic?" I found that the card would have to be a graceful Magic reference and able to potentially copy every Magus in some shape or form - heck, a Magus capable of such a stunt would have to be Legendary.

That's when I realized it - why not give the Magus a Commander?

@Flo: you'll notice that out of all the Magi that follow this convention, only the ones referencing lands don't match their respective originals' manacost. If you want to keep yours a 2/4, then I suggest moving your entry into lockstep with this restriction by changing its manacost to 1 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlue mana symbol. Then, you can maybe think about getting rid of the manacost of the activation.

@Aarhg: all in all, I'd say that yours is a pretty well-put-together card. If you were able to adjust the manacost (it MUST match source, so you aren't), I'd say raise it to 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol. But since you can't, it looks fine as-is.

@Mahx: Red/green color identity (red AND green). I guess I should've used color indicator, instead of mana symbol.

Restrictions breed creativity. I like narrow challenges like this. For this entry, Split Personality would obviously have to have a bunch more comprehensive rules to go with it to make it work, but I think it's easy enough to groc. I think someone else tried this before but I couldn't find the entry to give them credit or use the same ability name. I'll gladly update it if I do.

@amethyst-marie: First off, the ability cost is formatted incorrectly ("1 mana symbolRed mana symbol, Tap symbol:" as opposed to "Tap symbol1 mana symbolRed mana symbol:") and secondly, these cards are pretty strong. Remember, having a repeatable ability costs more than just the spell itself. It would be fine if you sacced the creature as part of the cost, as most Magi do, but to be able to just do it every turn, once a turn, for a low cost is quite strong. It might be balanced by the fairly high cost of the card, but it is something to consider. Do wanna say I really like your art though. I like how similar the characters look--you can definitely see the resemblance in the...chest...region...andfaceandhands... Winking smiley Very cool that you found such similar art from two different artists.

@bioplay - When missing the comma, MSE always put the Tap symbol first and I didn't know how to fix that. Comma was the key, thanks! I wasn't thinking that most magi sacced themselves, but the ones for non-permanent spells do so that makes sense. I'll adjust the cost/power toughness accordingly when I get a chance. The art was really why I went with that one over the batterskull, it's much more appealing for sure Smiling

KalvinHobbez
KalvinHobbez's picture

So first time doing a card of the week, so I hope I'm doing this right. I liked the idea behind this one, so I felt like throwing in some words I had on the design concept behind it.

Design Philosophy
So first things first, I want to say that I wanted to go for a realistic card. As in following patterns and design choices as if it were going to be a real card coming out in the next Commander set, perhaps. I'm not saying it's bad to not be accurate, as that can make for interesting ideas like some I've already seen, but I just wanted to try an accurate look at this.

Now with the original Magus there was a full cycle for Future Sight, Planar Chaos, and Time Spiral. One thing I found out that was pretty neat a while back was that each of these cycles reference a specific card type as well. Future Sight was Enchantments, Planar Chaos had Lands, and Time Spiral had Artifacts. Knowing this fact, the two existing Commander made Magus follow the same pattern...as they are both referencing Sorcery cards.

Though not true for every Magus, it seems true so far for the newest cycle developing, each referenced card is on the Reserve List. Meaning it won't and can't be reprinted from what I remember, so that lets something like the Magus cycles function as a remake and rebalancing of a mechanic we wouldn't see again elsewhere.

So with this knowledge, a logical card to come out in the future is a Magus referencing a powerful Sorcery from the Reserve List under the colors of Blue, Green, or White as those are the colors left of the cycle. Going through the Reserve list I picked out a card for each color and made a Magus for them...but for now I'll just show off the blue one. Sorry for the long stuff, I just enjoyed the idea behind this contest and felt like sharing the ideas. I'm possibly wrong or stupid about it but whatever, good thing I put this in a spoiler.

With that paragraph of information in mind, I decided on Timetwister. I have a white Magus and a green Magus as well, but I'm not sure if multiple entries from the same person is allowed?

@Curse of Swine: VERY nicely done. This is one of the Spikiest Johnny cards I've ever seen here. Now, this is just my inner Melvin, but you may wanna reduce the toughness by 1, as the number of 1/3s black has is more than double the number of its 1/4s. (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&color=+[B]&power=+=[1]&tough=+=[3] vs http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&power=+=[1]&tough=+=[4]&color=+[B]). You'd get my vote uncontested, were it not for the very next entry.

@KalvinHobbez: Welcome, dear poster. Welcome indeed. You keep providing such in-depth, logical rationales for your entries, not even the infamous 5lacker would be able to find major faults with your entries. In fact, I dare him to try! Be proud of such sound reasoning, bring it out of spoilers. Make it your thing!

As to the entry itself, if you look to Wheel of Fortune, Wheel of Fate, and Magus of the Wheel, you'll see, although it's subtle, that the manacost of the Magus matches the original card, while the cost to activate it matches the suspend cost of its successor. I'd suggest you do the same for your entry, looking to Timetwister and Time Reversal. This would also mean you'd hafta drop either a power, a power & a toughness, or a toughness, in order to match the manacost, but honestly, we'd never miss it. Also, you can lose the last Then, as it is superfluous.

It's a shame that we don't have more Magi that follow such a pattern of powerful card, card inspired by powerful card, Magus that pays homage to that entire legacy, as most Magi by necessity omit the middle card in the chain.

@grishnax: All printed Magi match their progenitor cards' manacosts. Suggest you do the same, and lower power to match as well. A 0/4 monoblue creature with abilities for cmc2 has a 5-1 precedent over a 1/4 monoblue creature with NO abilities for cmc2 (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&cmc=+=[2]&power=+=[0]&tough=+=[4]&color=+@(+[U]) vs http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=382328).
