Mechanics

Cycling

Cycling <cost>(<cost>, Discard this card: Draw a card.)

Our first mechanic preview is a beloved returning mechanic: Cycling! When a card is stuck in your hand don't you sometimes wish it were something else? Well, thanks to cycling you can pitch that boring card to get a new one! And sometimes you'll even get a neat bonus for cycling a card instead of using it!

Cycling represents Festenya's love of the temporary and fleeting. Something that is popular today might not be popular tomorrow, and keeping on top of trends can be difficult. Cycling is found in all colors, and it does the best it can at keeping you current!

Extort

Extort (Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay White/black mana symbol. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life.)

Let's face it, greed exists. Some people are drawn to money more than others, and some people use this lust for money as an excuse to nickel and dime others. Our second returning mechanic, extort, lets you do exactly that! Quite literally nickel and dime your way above the opponent as you grind life totals (heyo)!

Extort returns to its familiar home in both White mana symbol and Black mana symbol. New to Festenya is the ability to get added benefit from extorting spells! You might find that certain cards want you to extort through them, how exciting!

Affluent

Affluent (This creature gets +1/+1 and is affluent as long as you control an artifact.)

Affluent is Festenya's first new mechanic. To put it simply, it represents the affluent individuals in Festenya. Those who flaunt their physical artifacts obtain an affluent status in the community, and are respected as a result! This does not mean Festenya is an artifact set, oh no. While there are both creature and non-creature artifacts, a lot of Festenya's wealth comes from the constant exchange of gold!

Affluent is present in White mana symbol, Black mana symbol, and Red mana symbol. Your creatures are affluent as long as you are in control of a single artifact, either creature or noncreature. As soon as you lose control of your last artifact, affluent creatures lose their affluent status and +1/+1 increase.

Opulent

Opulent - As long as you have the most life or are tied for most life, <effect>.

Nothing better represents living in the moment than celebrating your good health! You might not live forever but you can come close, and while you're alive you might as well reap the benefits of living in luxury! You'll find that each color has a unique way to sustain your opulence, but there might be one or two ways to more effectively better yourself!

Opulent is present in all five colors! Get busy living, or die trying!

Trade

Trade for X (You may reveal the first card you draw each turn when you draw it. Whenever you reveal a X card this way, put a +1/+1 counter on ~.)

Your creatures themselves can profit as they barter and trade the resources on the top of your library. By trading, you can guarantee your army gets a little bit stronger each turn for the small price of information when they ask for it.

Trade for X is found in Blue mana symbol, Green mana symbol, and Red mana symbol. When trading, you are given the opportunity to reveal the first card you draw on either your turn or your opponent's after you draw it, similar to miracle. You may reveal a single card to any number of trade effects that card applies to. You may reveal a card you've drawn but does not meet any trade requirements, but none of your creatures with trade will benefit.

In a strange twist of events, I'm finding myself with less and less time to write and more and more desire to do it. So I'm going to compromise by just releasing Festenya in all its glory. We had a fun run, lads! Thanks to all who were a part of it!

Iunno, that kinda knight seems a bit suspicious :P

You may want to go with 'whenever you reveal an X card this way' then, kinda reads that it always triggers on reveals and also gives you a way to reveal. mayjustbeme.

Extort isn't featured too heavily in the set so that's one of the things I'm less worried about. Plus I like defining exactly what's getting extorted and which creatures are the ones extorting, since the mechanic can get a little messy

Cycling and Extort are returning, so I'll touch a bit on the new mechanics.

Affluent is a fun one, but I'd be careful about how easy it is to turn on. Wealthy Benefactor by itself is a 3/3 for 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbol that gives you a one-shot ramp, which is already pretty powerful. I'd expect much of affluent to not turn itself on at common, while saving the more exciting affluent cards for rare.
Opulent is a simple mechanic and looks like it could be interesting in colors other than white. I'd be interested to see how you do black Opulent, since a big subtheme of black recently is self-inflicted pain, which pretty much goes against Opulent in every way.
Trade shouldn't have a period at the end of it, since it's not an action keyword. With a keyword like this, I'd expect scry to be very limited in the set, or else it will be way too easy to turn on, and the payoff of a +1/+1 counter is very good. I'd love to see a Delver variant here! Perhaps a 1/1 blue dork with trade for instants (and/or sorceries?) that gains flying when it gets a +1/+1 counter. That'd be savage.

Overall, these mechanics aren't strange or splashy enough for me to fully assess them without seeing the way they're used in the set, which lines up well with the flavor you've built. As long as each card oozes with flavor, the keywords are going to exist mainly to just enhance gameplay, while taking a backseat to the world itself. Just try not to break any of them in the process, because keywords like trade have a lot of inherent power and could be abused quite easily if you're not careful.

I don't think I can add much more than what @marioware has put above, but IMO, so far so good. I like how the cards seen thus far don't use the keyword to carry them mechanically, rather they each build on that keyword in their own creative way. Personally, I'm really excited to see legendaries for this set, as if they go by the same rule as I've just mentioned, they would make for some pretty sweet commander decks.

I actually think Wealthy Benefactor is the only affluent card that turns herself on. Most affluent creatures at common get the keyword itself, and doing things with the keyword comes at higher rarities.

I'm glad you guys like what's been spoiled so far! I'm having a tough time finding time to sit down and dish out some story spoilers, but I'm working on it! Hang in there!

Of Three Sisters

Three sisters stood upon a barren rock;
they stood together hand in hand,
but their souls were oceans apart.

The first sister saw beauty in her loneliness,
and created a cultured and kind people;
she taught them the true song of life,
and gave them the world to live in.

The second sister saw law in her loneliness,
and created a tall and ordered people;
she taught them how to record and persevere,
and gave them the tools to grow.

But the third sister was consumed by jealousy,
unable to see past her sisters;
she created sprites of malice and mockery,
and used them to take from the rock.

She stole the leaves from the trees,
she stole the breath of the seas;
her power grew stronger,
and she took from the world as she pleased.

Some people fled to far away shores,
while others cowered in fear,
they both saw the world was falling apart,
and prayed that the sisters would hear.

The carefree sister, with pain in her heart,
silenced the sprite's language of spite;
the orderly sister, the justice upstart,
crafted a wall for all life to hide.

They found the third sister consumed by desire,
and struck a bargain between them:
all life was sacred and death broke their heart,
but a cycle of new life was needed.

They would teach her the beauty of creation,
and have her use the lives that she stole:
so the three sisters, with renewed understanding,
could shape a new world whole.

"Hello, boys. Did you miss me?"

Zevya felt a sense of twisted pleasure as guards crawled through the secret passage connecting her private room to the small pantry of her bar. The question bounced around their small minds as they took their places along the room's perimeter. Zevya had no idea they were coming, of course, but it was fun to make them think she did. A small, fierce woman was the last of the swarm to enter, and she held the painting that covered the entrance between crossed arms.

"The queen herself has left the hive! To what do I owe the pleasure?" Zevya mocked, uncrossing her legs and slouching into her reclining chair.

"Cut the crap. What have you been planning?"

"If I had any idea what you meant, dear deFleur, your men wouldn't have made it past the door." Zevya spat. The detective hadn't come tonight to mince words.

"Kingpins don't just vanish, Zevya," deFleur replied sternly, "I want to know where you've been sneaking off to." Festenya's head of police leaned the painting against the wall and pulled a warrant from her coat. "I came prepared this time."

Zevya slowly stood and smoothed her dress. Mrs. deFleur always acted outside the law, so having a warrant with her was serious. She brushed off one of her pillows and put together a plan before extending her hand to Mrs. deFleur. Hands across the room dove to their belts readying all manner of swords and Volta gadgets, but Lis deFleur simply dropped the warrant into Zevya's outstretched hand. Without a fuss, huh?[i] Zevya thought. [i]So she's a worker bee too. Not ideal.

She scanned the warrant quickly and hoped she wouldn't draw too much suspicion to herself. The paper made no mention of her at all, to Zevya's surprise. It also didn't mention any of her holdings overseas. Which meant the officers didn't have anything solid. Zevya was safe, for now.

"Fine," Zevya said, sliding the warrant down Mrs. deFleur's slightly open chestplate. The police chief blushed as she fumbled for the paper. "I was homesick. I miss the simple life across the lake and I could feel it missed me."

"Greengate and it's subsidiaries are still under open investigation. I trust none of their assets have been moved."

"With my word and Hybriea's blessing, your investigation has not been impeded." Zevya put one hand to her chest to solidify her angel's blessing.

"I trust an angel's blessing very little these days. Show me around the premises." Lis deFleur retorted.

Zevya rolled her eyes. This was the hard part in dealing with the police- no good gesture was good enough. "I'm afraid I have business to attend to north of here. I will have one of my girls show your merry band around." Zevya motioned for the swarm of police to follow her through the secret entrance. Once they were on the other side she held out her hand; this time she had a gift for Mrs. deFleur. A small rose uncurled from her fingertips before it shuddered and wilted into a black husk.

"A flower, for my Fleur," Zevya chuckled.

Zevya walked briskly through downtown Vitora. Clutched in her hand was a single sheet of paper, wadded into a ball no bigger than her fist. On the paper were two simple words:
They know.

I like your writing. I don't get bored trying to read it. Nice and succinct. Pretty well-written, too - a rough edge here and there, but nothing that ruins the story (and better than some novels I've read)!

As for the cards - Fraud Artist seems like a fine common. I'm not entirely sure I get the flavor behind Decider of Beauty having menace? She looks perfectly nice to me. The story paints (kek) her as more of an unsuspected villain, though the story and the card were made by two separate people, so I can forgive that. The effect is a very green effect (in fact, no colors have ever gotten it before) but since black can both sacrifice creatures and search libraries, I don't see a reason why it's out of pie. Looks like she could be a powerful engine in the right kind of deck, though not absurdly powerful since she doesn't put them into play (something that I do think would be out of pie).

Aces
"Hey"

The call cuts through the grandiose glamor and finds its way directly into your ears. No one else hears the invitation as you move your way through the swinging couples on the dance floor in search for the source. At the back of the club, away from the cascade of ribbons and confetti, a man sits at a round table. The woman draped over his arm watches him shuffle a deck of cards, his fingers dancing rhythmically with the cardboard. "You want to play Aces?" he asks.

"Aces?"

The woman pipes up. "Whassa matter? You ain't played no Aces before?"

"It's simple," the man explains, holding a hand up to silence the girl on his arm. "We each start at twenty-five points. I deal out five cards between the each of us, face down. Then we take turns flipping over cards, counting down from 25. Queens, kings, jacks, and jokers is worth ten points each. Go too low, and you lose it all." He rolls an ace of hearts between his fingers, studying the card. "You flip over the Ace... Then you win big fast."

The man deals you five cards, before spreading five cards in front of him. You take turns flipping the cards. On the third turn, you flip a card to find the same ace of hearts staring up at you. "Look at that," the man chuckles, "Beginner's luck." He collects the cards and reshuffles the deck.

"No fair! Old Donnie was just goin' easy on ya. Didn't want to hurt ya feelins," the woman squawks.

He finishes shuffling the deck again and spreads a new set of five cards in front of you. "How about we make this one interesting?"

The short, balding man stumbled through the back alleys of the slums, ankle-deep in grime and filth. Sweat was dripping profusely from his anxious brow, and he frantically peeked over his shoulder every few steps.

It's coming for me.

Weathered Accountant

The man's mind was filled with regret. He knew he was taking on some amount of risk coming to meet a client in the slums, but nothing could have prepared him for what happened today. For what he saw today, with his own two eyes. He shook his head. If he hadn't seen it, he never would have believed it.

Grime sloshed around his boots with every step. He had no destination, nor sense of direction. He just needed to keep moving. Maybe, somehow, he would be able to escape the fate that awaited him somewhere nearby.

Each passing thought stung as he calculated each and every mistake he had made. Fables had told of a creature deep within the slums that hunted down lawbreakers and consumed their very souls. But those were just that -- fables. Stories. Myths. No one ever believed them. They were just told to children to keep them on the straight path. Just stories. Nothing more.

The man stopped for a second, leaning up against a building to catch his breath. No one seemed to notice him as he made his way past them. Almost as if he was already dead... No. He shook his head and cleared his mind of the thought. I must keep moving.

He knew he was meeting with a less-than-savory gentleman today, but he didn't know the extent of his crimes. Racketeering, grand theft, arson, murder? And the man had seemed almost excited to tell him. Excited to divulge his horrifying accomplishments to a hostage ear. The stories seemed to go on for hours and the gentleman had shown no signs of stopping when... it came.

The creature descended from the shadows, slowly focusing on the criminal bragging about his illicit affairs. Slowly but surely, he stopped talking and began mumbling, his face growing paler and paler with each passing second. After a minute or two, the criminal had simply slumped to the ground, devoid of whatever life he had in the first place.

And I could do nothing but watch in horror, thought the man as he continued to lumber through the waste. He had stood there like a man caught at knifepoint, with nowhere to run. And once the creature had devoured the soul of the criminal, it turned ever so slightly and gazed directly into the man's soul.

And that's when he know the creature was coming for him.

As he thought, he paid no attention to the slowing of his pace. He barely noticed his mind becoming jumbled, as if something was in his brain, taking apart thoughts and smushing them into mutated, hideous forms of themselves. His left leg faltered, and his knee sunk into the ground. He tried to stand up, but he could no longer move. Through some force other than his own strength, his head swiveled around, and his eyes met with the eyes of the creature once again.

In the final moments before his brain stopped for good, he pieced together a final thought. I am not a lawbreaker. This beast is said to hunt down lawbreakers. Why did this thing come for, of all people, me?

And the creature still did hunt down lawbreakers. In fact, its primary goal was to hunt down the gentleman who was in the man's company today. The creature still did its job - but who ever said you couldn't do your job and also have a little fun on the side?

In a strange twist of events, I'm finding myself with less and less time to write and more and more desire to do it. So I'm going to compromise by just releasing Festenya in all its glory. We had a fun run, lads! Thanks to all who were a part of it!

Here's some things!

White:
- Glare of Dawn: Somehow this seems not rare. Maybe uncommon? When you cycle it it's 4 mana to exile a small creature.
- Maelo, Corrupt Official: Mom's been working out.
- Maelo's Decree: Wow. This design is really neat. Expecting a cycle.
- Night's Ring Student: War Priest of Thune says this can be a 2/2.
- Then There Were None: Not sure if The Abyss is in white, even though it exiles.

Keyword Note: Not sure that affluent needs to make the creature affluent. Usually state changes like this are used to restrict the creature [see: Monstrosity, Renown] and the few spells that mention affluent without having it are very limited even with it. The black spell that destroys target affluent creature can't touch anything blue or green, for example.

Blue:
Deny the Truth: Unless mill is a pretty big thing here, I don't think this is ever getting cast.
Discombobulate: You, uh.. you realize that this is just "Destroy target creature with power 3 or less" right? Two of those effects that shouldn't be on the same card.
Distracting Youth: "The closer you look, the less you see." Alternatively, "I take the most valuable gift you could give me, your attention, and turn it against you."
Grimoire Fae: I beg you a pardon? Equal to my what?
Inspiring Dream: Don't worry, didn't need the maximum hand size anyways. Doesn't matter until my own end step regardless.
Lose Track: Mind Rot, but specially to make the opponent feel bad. Discard is secondary in blue, so sure.
Pesky Meddlers: A few inconsistencies. Some Trade cards look for counters, some look for the trade. I'd just look for the trade on all of them for consistency reasons.
Psyclot: Given that Tome Scour is a single blue mana for mill 5, this could cost a lot less.
Retold Tales: Still don't know what X is equal to.
Singer of Solis: So, you get paid off for casting spells at instant speed? I was doing that anyways!
Stretch the Truth: I can't wait to Stretch the Truth into Stretch the Truth.
Sudden Dismissal: Yep, stifle is stifle. Cycle Stifle.
Swarm of Fae: I'm beginning to estimate that your wit is how confused you are at what wit is.
Sway of the Stars: This should probably be mythic, like Worldfire and The Great Aurora.

Black:
Calcermo, the Last Feather: Should probably say nonland.
Ishyn Fae: Compare to Basilica Screecher. This can cost 1B
Nighthallow Ritual: So you beat them down to, like, 10 and on turn 6 you just kill them with a 10 damage burn spell?
Study the Night: I really hope I'm not supposed to build a deck around this.

Red:
Boycott: See, I'd play this in Standard because it's Shatter. Artifact heavy sets should have worse removal, so cool.
In the Cards: I'll let you get away with this because the rest of the set seems slightly skewed to lifegain.
Lady Myriada: This ult will end up with a library on the battlefield. If you know this, she's fine.
Night's Ring Instructor: "this turn"
Rumour Reporter: Poke.
Weigh Information: So how do you play around your opponent's wit?

Green:
: This card needs a name. "Untap target creature you control. It gets +3/+3 until end of turn."
Ageless Watcher: Yep, green rares.
Free Market: "You may spend mana to activate abilities." Also, pretty sure that's a rare effect.
Ga-Roma's Decree: The only one of the cycle that doesn't actually exist in the set.
Landscape Scenery: I wonder if "for a land with a basic land type" would be easier to read.
Pinnacle of Vigor: This name sounds like an enchantment.
Purity of Nature: Oh, hey, Slice in Twain.
Wildspring Blessing: Alright, so wit is cards in hand? The only thing I can think of that makes sense. If that's the case, reminder text.

Multicolor:
Galvani and Volta: Oh, is this where these two are from?
Sakon, the Watcher: That ult is very underwhelming. Granted, it's 3 mana. But still.
Zevya of Rotted Woods: And the amount of times she's ever going to get to ult is 0.
Hearth-Sienal Express: Choo-choo!

End notes: Someone finally explained that wit is your hand size. Spoilers, I think labeling it that is pointless since you need to explain it on the cards anyways, otherwise this happens.

Some responses:

Glare of Dawn: I costed it absurdly high because it is a more difficult to counter exile spell. If it turns out too weak I can drop a White mana symbol from the cost
Night's Ring Student: True, but War Priest is an uncommon and decidedly more sexy
Then There Were None: It's basically the world's slowest boardwipe via Oblivion Ring effects.

Discombobulate: *shrug*
Distracting Youth: I like that first flavor text. Much more better wording lol
Lose Track: Wistful Thinking
Pesky Meddlers: The only trade card that cares about +1/+1 counters is Curtain Caller because I remembered I have proliferate in my standard format.
Sway of the Stars

Calcermo, the Last Feather: I'm ok with him finding lands, because he's 1) slow at it; 2) got no way to exile them himself.

Night's Ring Instructor: Ooops. Fixed

: Empower? I think we went with empower. Either way, it's empower
Ageless Watcher: Greenslayer Angel? Idk
Free Market: Worded funky to work with extort in limited.
Ga-Roma's Decree: Ga-Roma got a card in the lost tales. He was the only senator to get featured.
Landscape Scenery: Idk man I was just bootlegging Farseek

Galvani and Volta: Ye
Sakon: I mean, it's unconditional exile that's also a nifty bounce tool. Idk yo

Hearth-Sienal Express: I want to throw this out there that this card existed before Kaladesh. The trains are my own lol.

Exile, dies, and create are not explained on the cards they appear on but exist. It saves space and I'm ok with it A happy smile

The difference between exile and wit is that exile, dies, and create are things that happen. They get away with it partially for that and partially because it's very clear what they do at a moment's glance, like when it's across the table. I actually had no clue what wit was until, like, the fifth card.

Sway of the Stars was from before mythics. Printed now, it would be mythic. (Another example is Time Reversal, as well as Day's Undoing)
