Annexed, by isaac the awesome

Welcome to the first of hopefully many Addition threads, where we'll discuss the changes that need to be made for sets that will be added to a plugin. Some of these potential issues include scripting, inclusion of tokens, duplicate names, and power level concerns. Today we'll be discussing Annexed.

GENERAL NOTES:

Annexed is an interesting set-- a return to Innistrad that began some two years before Shadows Over Innistrad. It's also a fairly underwhelming set (a few anomalies aside), and frankly, I don't think it's fit for inclusion in the plugin in its current form. But we'll get to my reasoning in a little bit.

I should note that this set has double-faced cards in it, which means it will require quite a bit of scripting to function correctly. Lucky for us, isaac is (true to his name) awesome at Lackey scripting, and between him and Wind I can't see the set not functioning right.

MECHANICS:

This set has one new mechanic and multiple returning ones. You might be thinking, Jacqui, this set has TWO new mechanics-- relentless and soulsend! But does it really? Relentless is the Lone Wolf ability but as a keyword... which makes it functionally equivalent to ruthless from Preasti. I think this needs to change before we upload the set for consistency's sake.

Let's talk about the other returning mechanics. Many of the transform cards are underwhelming, but the mechanic itself is fine. Flashback looks similarly bad. Many of the payoff cards for running Flashback spells are awesome; Bladerunner Seraph could be the centerpiece of an awesome deck running Purify the Grave et al in actual modern. Unfortunately, I see very little reason to run any of these cards for their flashback costs. Consider the following flashback costs, seen on various white spells: 4 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol, 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolBlack mana symbol, 5 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol, 4 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol, 4 mana symbolRed mana symbolWhite mana symbol. The awesome effects you're getting off these cards include sorcery speed Withstand Evil and Purify the Grave for 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbol more for some reason. Only one of these cards is worth running, and it's the 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbolWhite mana symbol Utter End. (Which is a common, because... you stumped me.)

Stranger still is the dislocated common semi-cycle based on Increasing Devotion et al. (Incidentally, the set has a rare cycle that is literally Increasing Devotion et al.) Check out Necrolance, a 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbol common:

If Necrolance was cast for its flashback cost, change its text by replacing all instances of “or” with “and.”
Necrolance deals 2 damage to target creature or target player. You gain life equal to the amount lost this way.
Flashback 4 mana symbolBlack mana symbol

Wow, that's appropriate for common.

More confusing is Morbid, a mechanic that has literally no mechanical cohesion. The original Innistrad had Morbid give spells an extra effect if a creature died this turn; this new set of Morbid cards has no such basis. Half of them trigger off the original condition, and half seem to trigger of ANY creature dying.

Now that we've discussed the new stuff, it's time to talk about soulsend. Unfortunately, the mechanic kind of sucks. Like, a lot. Beyond having no built-in way to mark purity like undying did, the mechanic suffers from introducing half-baked tribal mechanics into the set. It's very, very bizarre from a flavor perspective and I have no idea what's going on here.

IMPACTFUL CARDS

Blessed Soldier looks interesting in both equipment decks and Bogles.
Call of the Parish could be neat in token decks.
Curse's Erasure is Utter End with flashback, AND in mono-white.
Blossoming Harvest looks like a very interesting ramp spell.
Follow the Path is awesome with Deja vu lands. Not that anyone runs them, but maybe they will now! Good ramp spell all around though.
Leyline Tracker looks awesome.
Progenitor Ooze enables some really, really interesting decks.
Bruna, Keeper of Truth is genuinely AWESOME. Easily the best card of the set.
Flameyearn Demon looks rad.
Helvault Dust is going to see a lot of play in MSE Commander.
Awesome dual cycle.

BAH-ROKEN CARDS

Aetherfire Channeler is... a 2/2 for Blue mana symbol with basically no drawbacks. An aggressive blue one-drop in the innistrad remake is to be expected, of course, but w/e.
Cursed Awakening isn't a crazy update of Assassinate so much as it is a TERRIFYINGLY GOOD CARD IN ANY CREATURE HEAVY STRATEGY.
Eleventh Hour is neat, but potentially crazy. Morbid Rebirth is awesome in jacqui-standard; this card costs more but is way more consistent with the zombie swarm.
Feast on the Feeble is basically a Wind Drake with Murder attached for 2 mana symbolBlack mana symbolBlack mana symbol.
Falkenrath Cutter is crazy good in RDW: Haste, relentless, and a Satyr Firedrinker self-buff ability? Woah.
Gryff Guide isn't BROKEN, but it gets +0/+1 and hexproof over Wind Drake. Bizarre choice.
Moonmad Alchemist is a curiously powerful engine.
Two Unyielding Ghoul and a sac engine goes infinite. Which would be fine, except it costs two mana and is incredibly, incredibly good in almost any context.
Increasing Firepower is kind of scary, and I wouldn't be surprised if it won games on its own.
Thraben Seraph + a sac engine gets infinite creature ETBs, not to mention it has a built-in anthem.
Wolfir Harbinger is a Bond Beetle with +1/+0... aka, a 2/2 for Green mana symbol. Eek?

Well?

Don't worry, I can handle double-faced cards. Guess what set was recently released that I had to script those in? (I mean, so can he apparently, so... )

I'm assuming Annexed is on the podium because it's the next released set and not because it's bad or anything?

Is there a way to get a separate subforum for these [Addition] threads? So we aren't calling someone out on the entire forum?

Wow. An entire review for the plug in. Sweet. I will add a link to this on the forum.

The set still needs some work. There are a lot of broken cards, typos, and general garbage. Still cleaning up. I do have the ambition to get this set into mse modern. The more critique I get, the sooner I can implement a finalized version.

Also this is has nothing to do with the compatibility of the set in mse. I have figured it out. I appreciated all the critique. Whether it is admiration of cards or honesty in pointing out flaws and errors. I would just prefer it be posted on the sets forum page rather than start a brand new page. I presume you made this page to discuss why you do not believe this set is ready for mse modern and I agree with you. Quality critique like this is exactly what I need to improve the set. I just wont be able to see it if it is on this rather than the sets actual page.

I'm going through the set file and leaving notes, right now actually! Mostly about wording changes, but balance notes and compliments too.

I really, really like this set! It's solid and looks fun. And you've got an amazing art selection

Something that might work is if Soulsend triggered off a Human entering the battlefield under your control?

Honestly it will be very difficult for sets made by one person and just shooed into the plug in to be balanced into the MSE format. You would need some type of panel to "accept" it. Or better yet a legit development team. But that is my high horse as I have made my point clear numerous times about using teams to make the best set A happy smile There is just so much involved in a set for one person to actually get the design and development right to the point it is playable. Up until a few months ago nobody even played with the cards in the sets they designed; it was just a new shiny cool thing. So this is pretty new to everyone.

Check out my updated set hub.

Yeah, that's also why I waited so long on SoR. To hopefully find things that are dumb by lonely-ily playtesting drafts and building for Windy Standard

Wolfir Harbinger Fix
Wolfir Harbinger G

Also another update:
Flashback has been removed from the set. I have found a new candidate returning mechanic. I will be implementing the champion mechanic due to its excellent interaction with morbid.

Many of the cards will change with the removal of flashback. Soulsend was less of a big deal.

I am testing mechanics. Planning on something tribal. Will get back on that in the next update.

Awww, Moonmad Alchemist was really good at 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol! My concern with it is that costs paid with mana always come before costs paid with other things, when dealing with abilities (It should be 2 mana symbolBlue mana symbol, Put a card from your hand...)

Champion and morbid work ok I guess? Champion exiles.

Champion seems like it'd be awesome with undying, though...

@ThisisSakon: You are correct. Thanks
@jacqui: Champion has you sacrifice the creature or champion. In addition a championed creature gives a creature replacement.

Nope. Boggart Mob:

Champion a Goblin (When this enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you exile another Goblin you control. When this leaves the battlefield, that card returns to the battlefield.)

Ooooooh man, Demons with Human offering sound awesome.

What I would push for personally is Human offering and Soulsend with the purifying requiring a Human. Because then the Human tribal (which was a weirdly big thing in Innistrad) is at the forefront but in, like, a fun way.
