375 card - 8 player Cube

The Homebrew Cube is a small, 8 man draft cube (or 4 person Sealed) entirely composed of custom cards.

The cards were designed based around Cube staple effects, nearing a powered cube's average power level. As such, the balancing was done on a far different scale than that of your average Magic set.

Each card has been uploaded on top of a card which shares as close a CMC and tag as could be. Of course, this is far from perfect, so expect the AI to not get everything right.

In any case, I hope anyone who drafts it enjoys themselves!

I do not own any artworks depicted within the cube. The artworks were taken from various websites and properly credited to the artists at the bottom of each card.

I do not have any financial interest in making this set and using these artworks should be seen as advertisement for the respective artists and their amazing work. However, if you own an artwork depicted here and don't want me to use it, notify me and I will remove it.

Ooh, you have my attention! Custom releases that aren't regular sets always intrigue me.
At this point, I'm taking Reckless Stormbringer, because, whoa, 4-power flyer for three. Death from above!

Some cards are clearly powerful. Those are all nice designs, though.
I know the cube is made to be powerful, so feel free to ignore my criticism as far as your power level goes.

Reckless Stormbringer - That ability is a very insignificant drawback. I suggest you make him 3/2.
Enlightened Artifice - Tinker was a broken card, so this one is broken as well. Darksteel Colossus, here I go!
Celestial Judgment - No. There's a card that costs 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbol and is like that but without the fateful hour and it just destroys instead of exiling. This is too powerful. White mana symbolWhite mana symbol or 2 mana symbolWhite mana symbol are the costs I recommend.
Mystical Hermit - Nope. 1 mana symbolBlue mana symbolRed mana symbol is what I would suggest. In a normal cube, I'd say to reduce its stats, but it might be okay here.
Cinder Duelist - I want this.
Price of Eons - Erm, off-color?
Realmwake Healer - Off-color too, but I think it's an acceptable bend. Maybe return a permanent card like Eternal Witness?
Shadowgrove Ambusher - Elf Rogue, yay! I would feel so tempted to just make him a 2/2, but considering Troll Ascetic it's probably good.
Reconsider - *Thumbs up*. Love this. It *may* need to be 1 mana symbol instead of 2 mana symbol, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, all of these cards are interesting in their own way. I'm loving this.
I'd choose, from a player's point of view, the Hermetic. Or the Artifice. Or Phytomorphosis. Or the Ambusher. Or the Strombringer. From a designer and Red mana symbol-lover's point of view, the Duelist.

Hey guys, thanks ever so much for checking this out.

A few things to note:

One, the entire cube is already done, you just need to click on THE LINK above to go there. IF you do draft it, please make an account so it saves the drafts in the decks section. This is a really important tool to see what's being picked and what isn't.

Two, and this for one's for Ude. The cards are all designed in a vacuum. They are built for the sole purpose of this cube so I balance based on the cube as a whole, not magic as a whole. Also, Price of Eons is on color as white gets to remove both of these (Kor Sanctifiers for example) as is Realmwake Healer (Genesis, Restore, Eternal Witness). Celestial Judgment is an upgraded Reciprocate which for the purpose of the cube is fine.

I'm glad you're all liking the cards here so far, some very different answers on P1P1. I have a lot of people on our FB page choosing the Dark Promises first. I'm glad to see some diversity!

Feel free to PM me or post below, and you can all look forward to a real life draft write up in the coming week or two as well as other articles detailing the individual cards.

Thanks for testing it out, we're at #15/30 on Top Cubes Drafted This Week on cubetutor which is really neat.

Are there any cards you really enjoy? Really dislike? Fixes?

Let me know!

Note: The reason you can pick up the cards is because the CPU's don't read the cards One of them is overlaying Snapcaster, for example, so it sees that card as Snapcaster.

Timespiraled's picture

Actually that's not how the AI works. It doesn't check the card, it checks: color, cmc, types and "tags". My cards are made to be the correct tags in relation to their underlaid card. So Arcanic Resonator works like Snapcaster, that's why it's overlaid on it.

Did you do any editing to the cards that are different?

Tue, 2015-09-15 06:07
Timespiraled's picture

As in? For example, I can manually adjust color, CMC and card type at will using cubetutor. Which I have done for quite a few. I cannot add or remove tags however, so there's always that.

It is by no means perfect, but the AI can and reliably will draft strong decks.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I do that sort of editing for Delve and X-cost spells, because otherwise CPU's see Treasure Cruise as an 8-mana card whereas it can reasonably be cast for 2-3 and probably only for 1.

Tue, 2015-09-15 15:00
Timespiraled's picture

I've set the X spells at 6 mana for the moment, which is where I'd expect them to reasonably be cast at.

I'm less concerned with the online Draft really since I'm really just using cubetutor as a convenient image gallery with an upside (Sealed and Draft).

It's a shame that there's no one in Canada besides me (as far as I know), would love to have a physical draft with some of you guys.

I'd love to do a physical draft too, but unfortunately, that isn't really viable thing. However, some people *cough*WindMasterArceus*cough* know how to draft using the program LackeyCCG, so that could be an option. I don't know much about it, but it may be worth looking into.

I imagine we could add these cards into MSE Modern. Not sure if the power level is too high, but we can always make a banlist if it comes to that.

I wouldn't recommend adding them into MSE Modern. There's some stuff in the cube which is significantly stronger than a Modern environment. If you look through, you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, the power level is... off the hook. I don't want Lady of the Shadows in this format (and that's a mild example, if you can call a super Bitterblossom on a stick "mild").

Though Exotic Smuggler might be the funniest card I've ever seen in a cube. The art on all these cards is stellar too.

Yeah, this'd be more like a legacy-legal set (consider Conspiracy)

Homebrew's a powered cube, so it's definitely in the legacy-vintage level of things.

It's finally all printed, cut and sleeved and ready for action. I will update with game results, decklists and etc very soon.

As for the set file, I'll be happy to release it after the initial period of playtest is over.

As for the art, I pride myself on having made sure that every card looks good. It makes for a hell of a draft.

Cheers all!

I do the same with my art. I refuse to even start spoiling a set until it's finished with complete artwork (tokens being the exception)

Same, I'm using actual mtg tokens. Hence my designs (beyond Everpond Frog) using preexisting tokens. Makes life a whole lot easier.

UPDATE: Added 15 additional cards to the cube so as to give both Exotic Smuggler something to do and fill a few holes.

September 20th 2015 Update

The Physical Playtest was a rousing success! On Friday we went through three different events: two back to back 1v1 Winston drafts, a 3-man draft and a full 4-man draft.

Subsequent to this, a few cards had to either be fixed in various terms: CMC changes, Ability changes, P/T changes and even complete re-writes in some instances.

For a complete list of changes, see the below spoiler.

Dauntless Armiger: Every game this creature has been dropped it has been almost unstoppable. For now we've changed the double strike to first strike and dropped the CMC to WW to compensate.
- Lladelai: Her ultimate has been buffered up to make it more effective.
- Eonic Hellkite has lost suspend.
- Incessant Madness is now a sorcery.
- Mesmerist Mastery changed to a Mind Control effect (and not a Treachery) with the option of moving it around as creatures enter the battlefield.
- Neverithian Ascendant's CMC dropped to UU.
- Reconsider now returns a spell unless its controller pays 1 (down from 2)
- Timecrafter Archmage needs a rehaul but I have not found what to do with it for now.
- Vestige of the Arcane now costs 3U (down from 4U)
- Deep Devourer now has deathtouch.
- Feast of the Fallen now triggers at end step.
- Haunting Necrologist now just gives creatures retrace.
- Souldraught Revenant's ability now encourages it to attacks, but has a better effect.
- Cinder Duelist now has a base P/T of 0/2 (up from 0/1)
- Dragonblood Shaman has been given a boost.
- Fiendfire now a 3/1 (up from 2/1)
- Forgeblood Reveler now a 3/2 and not a 2/2.
- Rapid Fire down to 2 damage (from 3)
- Reduce to Ashes is now changed to a better Lightning Strike.
- Skysea Smuggler now a 2/2, up from 2/1.
- Slagbreaker can now become bigger.
- Sparkdust Shower now costs 2R but only hits creatures you don't control.
- Ancestral Refuge now triggers at draw step.
- Fangwood Beastmaster now makes creature spells you cast cost 1 less and can't be countered. Up from 2/2 to 2/3.
- Loam Colossus now has Dredge 3 instead of Retrace.
- Loamdigger now has Dredge 2.
- Shadowgrove Ambusher was buffed.
- Surgevine now costs G and his ability no longer requires you to discard a card.
- Tashia is now named Taisha. Because.
- Primal Warchanter's ability now only costs X.
- Book of Parallel Worlds has been reworded to make more sense.
- Chronomatrix filters a maximum of 2 cards.
- Perilous Shrine now only requires you to have 2 or less cards, rather than one in your hand.
- Petrified Soul's last ability now makes it permanent.
- Static Serpent now a 2/1.
- Endless Labyrinth now costs 5 to activate.
- Expedition's End now costs 1 mana to activate.

Here's some feedback from the actual games:

I personally participated in this one against a friend. Because of the nature of Winston drafts, we both had to resort to being three color decks. In this instance we noted that Aggro decks did exceptionally well. Both in Draft #1 and Draft #2, the deck that put immediate pressure right from the start was the victor. It was fun, but as a cube that contains certain cards that rely on support from other ones, Winston may not be the best format.

I also participated in this draft and piloted a Sultai Dredge-type deck. However, I was unable to play a physical game due to me going on shift at my LGS. My two friends drafted an Azorius Control and a Mardu Aggro respectively. This time around, Azorius Control went undefeated. I had already foreseen White mana symbolBlue mana symbol as being the strongest control color pair and this was a step in proving this theory.

This draft took place during FNM and I was unable to watch most of it (being on shift). In a 4-man draft, the colors are separated even better meaning that two of the four players went 2-colors and two went 3-colors. There was no clear winner this time around, but Esper proved very strong once again.

I have scheduled tomorrow's draft with four friends, and I will act as Judge. During this time I will record decklists, draft picks and match play by play by video if possible. Hopefully I can upload them for your entertainment this time around.

I'm still aiming at adding an additional 90 cards, hopefully by this or next week to add variance or the option for an additional 1-2 players. I've had feedback as to missing pieces and am designing correspondingly.

For now, Black mana symbol, Red mana symbol and Green mana symbol should be getting some stronger cards while White mana symbol and Blue mana symbol will receive support that should keep their power level stable. The objective is for all five colors to be as effective.

Drafted this on the wobsite twice and I love it. Effervescent Axolotl is probably one of the coolest designed cards I've seen in a while (though I'm a sucker for novel effects and UG in general).
So far I haven't seen anything off the hook broken (in context of the other cards in the set), but I also haven't managed to find anyone to play with.

Hey glad to see some Homebrew Cube love! As you may have noticed on the cubetutor page, we're actively moving to our 360 version, so expect some cards to be "real" mtg cards until the layering is complete.

You wouldn't happen to be Alzorius or Eldaste by the way?
